Title: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by StegRock on Jul 12th, 2004, 1:47pm ...It's A Sequel! Leading up to the season, we are going to do these occasional "Don't Believe The Hype... It's A Sequel!" threads. Basically, these threads will be for conducting debates, stating cases for or AGAINST (the wave of opinion) and perhaps ultimately just taking polls on players who heretofore have not lived up to expectations, BUT for "some" reason are being hyped going into '04. Along the lines of this functioning as simply a poll of sorts, please do remember, especially if you explain away your position, to submit a "BOTTOM LINE" vote literally in the last line of your message. Moving right along,... This one is dedicated to the newly annointed "starting" tailback in Chicago, Thomas Jones. Mind you, in some of the readings I have done I have seen it written that they plan to use him in a "Priest Holmes" type of way. [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] This is erroneous to even just metaphorically or analogously allude to on SO MANY fronts: this is bad-weather Chicago we are talking about; this is "five-years-after-being-drafted" Thomas Jones we are talking about; what about Anthony Thomas?; Rex Grossman is their quarterback and their best receiver remains Marty Booker... I'm putting the fire out here... My "bottom line" vote on Thomas Jones for '04 - [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] ... Prepare yourself for disappointment lest you believe the hype!!! Next "batter" [smiley=waitinforu.gif] up... |

A classic Snap tune... sort of a jab at the more hardcore Public Enemy if I recall correctly. However, I'll try not to ride the fence on Thomas Jones, which is pretty much where I am right now. I'll climb off the fence and into the "Believe the Hype" field. I think Jones showed he had the ability last year when given the chance in Tampa. Now all he needs is a more committed chance in Chicago. If he gets the ball, I think good things can happen. If Lovie Smith wavers and goes RBBC with him and the Train, then nothing good will happen for either. I hear all the Priest Holmes comparisons and think they're definitely out of line. However, there is no denying that Jones is a back with great potential. He has speed, strength, quickness... I think he'll put it all to good use in 2004. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] "Believe the Hype... (sort of)" |

Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by captainpurple on Jul 21st, 2004, 11:45am I'm going with a big .... [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] Jones had his chances behind a somewhat decent line here in AZ, and blew it. Granted, it's the scarlet chickens, but still... Then in TB he showed some modest ability to be a Garner-style back. I like this comparison much more than the Priest one. But Chicago's o-line was abysmal last year. They added some much needed talent this year, but are also losing a couple guys. New coordinator + new QB + new o-line + RBBC = a mediocre to poor season for Jones. GO VIKES! |

Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by Cirrinone on Jul 26th, 2004, 10:59pm I know this is not for BELIEVING the hype, but since I'm half-way on it, I'll post here anyway. The kid is a tremendous talent, just has missed his opportunities. Plus, it's been noted his poor start to his career was due to lack of confidence and a poor atmosphere. There's a reason he was drafted #7 overall. I don't care what you say about busts like Leaf, Akili, etc... they all had talent. Thomas Jones has that talent also, and is in tremendous shape. Anyone seen this guy's arms? :o Let's just see if he can get that confidence, become a fan of Chicago atmosphere, then he'll produce. They have a massive O-line this year. |

Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by Cirrinone on Jul 27th, 2004, 5:28pm Bennett wouldn't fit into a Wannstedt offense. Latest word has Edgerrin James wanting to go to Miami, but Miami only contacting the Packers so far, for Najeh Davenport. I think Davenport could put up HUGE numbers as a starter. Levens, Robert Edwards, and James Allen have all asked for a tryout, also. |

Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by StegRock on Jul 27th, 2004, 5:44pm Guys, organization... Let's not turn this thread into something it is not. Ricky Williams and ALL the possible ramifications of his retirement are being THOROUGHLY discussed on the following (appropriate) threads: http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;action=display;num=1077408009; http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=55;action=display;num=1084583726. We surely don't need a third thread to further scatter the discussion here and there. That just makes our discussions less efficient and, thus, less effective and less productive (like at many other sites). Thank you for your understanding of our efforts here and future cooperation. Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by GOLF_FREAK on Sep 14th, 2004, 6:59am BELIEVE THE HYPE. BY NO MEANS IS JONES ANYWHERE NEAR PRIEST. NOBODY IS, HOWEVER WHEN YOUR OFFENSE HAS NOWHERE ELSE TO GO TO, YOU GO TO YOUR RB. HE DID HIS JOB AND DID IT WELL TO THE TUNE OF TWO TD'S. I AM A HOMER, BUT WHAT ELSE DID I HAVE TO ROOT FOR IN THAT GAME. THE DEF LOOKED GOOD, BUT THOSE DANG TO'S KILLED US. JONES IS A GREAT NUMBER 3 RB. GREAT!!!! |

Title: Re: Don't Believe The HYPE... Thomas Jones Post by muzz on Sep 20th, 2004, 9:28am Well even though I wasn't sold on him ( per my last post here), I had the chance to pick him up as my 3rd in the 5th Rd.. I did, and he's started for me both weeks and done well. They are doing what they said they would, giving him many touches, and not making him share duty with ATrain. I guess Shea and Lovie know what to look for in that kind of offense, and it SEEMS like they found what they were looking for. Now I have to go woof down some crow..... I kinda like crow... :D |
