A few weeks ago there were plenty of us who would have thought the Saints were going to be offensive powerhouses.  The weapons are undeniable in McAlister, Horn, Stallworth, and Brooks.  

However it appears the loss of FB Terrell Smith has hampered the running game so far this pre season and on top of that the quad injury to Brooks has caused some concern.  The Saints are claiming the injury is not serious, but i would be willing to bet that Brooks misses 2-4 games because of it.  im sure we all remember the end of the 2002 season when Haslett kept an injured Brooks on the field when he was throwing the ball at the recievers feet, and thats when he had Delhomme to step in.

This year if you grab Brooks, which i hope is not before round 5,  you better keep an eye on who wins the battle to be his backup between Todd Bouman and JT O'Sullivan.

As for McAlister,  he will have a long season with a healthy Brooks,  now imagine his season when defenses no longer have to fear the passing game.

First off, FANTASTIC write-up, guruhugh! [smiley=bow.gif] Way to "think it through"...  Great insight! [smiley=threed.gif] I concur with your position.

Secondly, [smiley=welcome.gif] to "the Gridiron".  You sure seem like the kind of "thinking" man we want around this joint.  I hope to see a lot of you from now on.

Lastly, for attention-getting and organizational purposes, I gave your thread a more hip message icon, "Holier than thou", which we use for denoting the Saints here on "the Gridiron".

I know the Saints drafted Mike Karney this year.  How has he looked?  He was one of the top blocking FBs available in this year's draft.

Any idea who has the inside track here?  O'Sullivan had a nice NFLEL year and has looked good in pre-season, however Bouman had the more impressive stats in the most recent pre-season game.

Thanks for the insight.  I have read that going to the one back set in N.O. has not gone too well and that even when they use the fullbacks they are not performing.    I don't understand why teams lose good fullbacks.  Year after year different teams make this same mistake.

On a side note, can I tell you how happy I was to read this post.  As the owner of the entire Saints offense in GBRFL (Brooks, McAllister, Stallworth, AND Horn it just made my day.   >:(   (yes, the truth hurts!)

Karney has looked good, especially against the last preseason game against the Bears where he stuffed a couple LB's.

It's really close, but i think Bouman will get the nod initially, but if he struggles im sure Haslett will let JT move up.  It appears JT shines when its gametime so he has been dubbed a 'gamer'...which JT does not like.
