After responding to and reviewing some of the feedback to Mossaholic's post titled "What would you do?", I decided to share a draft strategy that I employed for an upcoming auction draft this week. Since I already "froze" my roster I thought this may lead to some interesting discussion. I love being competitive but I thought this strategy would be an interesting experiment. Initially, I didn't try to go to the extreme as described below. Ultimately, the pieces came together and I thought "What the heck!" HAVE I GONE MAD????

Parameters:

10 team keeper league (Players are drafted with a three year contract. You can protect 1 player at each position plus three wildcards)

$30 salary cap.

Team composition: 3 QB, 5 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE, 2 K, 2 TEAM DEF

Start: 1 QB, 3 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 TEAM DEF

Scoring (Highlights - Won't bore you with every detail): 1 pt per 20 yds pass, 3 pts per pass TD. 1 pt per 10 yds rush/rec, 6 pts per rush/rec TD. 1 pt per reception.

I protected the following:

QB: Peyton Manning - $4.00
QB: Donovan McNabb - $4.60
RB: Stephen Davis - $3.80
WR: Randy Moss - $6.40
WR: Marvin Harrison - $7.10
WR: Torry Holt - $1.70
TE: Boo Williams - $0.10
K: Jeff Wilkins - $0.20
DEF: Carolina Panthers - $0.50

Total salary = $28.40. Leaves $1.60 to draft 10 players ($0.70 max bid)

I realize conventional wisdom says NEVER keep two QB's (an exception may be a cheap second QB) since you start only one. But I believe I can trade for a RB (I have already received a serious inquiry) at some point in the near future. If not, I was still willing to roll with this. Also, most of the quality QB's protected with the exception of Vick. He was thrown back because his salary of $6.10 was deemed to be too high. Since several teams need a starting QB, he may go for more than that.

I rolled the dice that I could draft junk RB's that would at least get a few carries a game (especially if they get goal line carries or catches) figuring my WR's and QB will throw up a ton of pts. I am also counting on finding a few diamonds in the rough in the FA pool early this year (Westbrook/Dom Davis/Rudi Johnson in 2003).

I have successfully employed this strategy in the past, but this is the first time I have taken the "Stud WR Theory" to this extreme.

Bottom line is my backs will stink and I will have no depth. But will the players I have compensate for this? Time will tell!

The 1pt/rec is a deceiving scoring attribute. I don't know that you can fully appreciate it until you've been in a league with it for a season. Guys like Harrison and Holt are somewhat consistent 10-12 pt producers. A RB has to have 50 yds + a TD to get that, which is a very nice game. Add return yds and a guy like Dante Hall is a 25 pointer for you 4-5 weeks a year!

So no, you aren't totally crazy.

I guess it might work in an auction league that awards one point per reception. However, in most leagues (that do not offer those points) it is a shaky strat. In my league, if I go after any of the top WRs, I will have NO chance to land even a decent FF RB because of the traditional serpentine draft format.

I'd still be worried with that roster of yours because of the inconsistency of the WRs. RBs are far more consistent. You can pretty much pencil in 20-30 touches for an Ahman Green or Priest Holmes, etc. How many touches does Randy Moss get? In 2003, Moss had two games where he only managed 4 catches for 20-something yards. If you're counting on him to carry your team, that hurts.

If I was you, I would have set Marvin and his GIGANTIC salary cap number free and used that money to grab a RB like Rudi Johnson or better. Then you'd have a lot more team balance. Moss and Holt would probably still be the best WR tandem by far in your league. Plus you'd also have a solid RB tandem with Rudi (or whoever) and SDavis.

Now you're going to have one solid RB when you need to start three. I don't like the prospect of starting SDavis, along with 2 scrubs that you'll have to settle for at $.70 or less.

Interesting theory, I think you can make it work; if you can sneak some receiving backs on your team cheap. Guys like Richie Anderson, Moe Williams, and Kevin Faulk.

Too bad its already frozen, Harrison does appear real pricey.
