Title: Lewis out of jail until the offseason-now the NFL
Post by Callie on Oct 7th, 2004, 9:40pm
If the NFL suspends him any games, I will be surprised, since this offense happened before he signed an NFL contract.  Am I right about this?  (Edit--Whoa - look at the edit!)

Here are some things I copied and pasted only.  No links yet.  Sorry.

KFFL Breaking News
Ravens' Jamal Lewis Pleads Guilty

Bloomberg.com reports Baltimore Ravens RB Jamal Lewis pleaded guilty Thursday, Oct. 7, to a federal charge of using a cell phone to aid a friend's drug transaction. Lewis was charged in February with conspiring to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute. He agreed to plead to a lesser offense and cooperate in the case against his friend. Lewis's lawyers expect him to be sentenced to jail. Sentencing was set for Jan. 26, 2005, said Edward Garland, a lawyer for Lewis. "I made a mistake four years ago," Lewis said in a statement outside the courthouse. "I'm willing to suffer the consequences." Lewis's lawyers said the running back might be sentenced to four months in a minimum-security prison and two months in a halfway house.

And Rotowire:

Under the plea agreement with prosecutors, Lewis will serve his sentence during the NFL offseason. By reaching a plea agreement, Lewis will not have to submit to a scheduled trial in November, which could have resulted in a career-ending sentence of at least 10 years if he was convicted. Lewis is still subject to NFL discipline for the drug-related violation. "We will review the court documents and announce a decision on league discipline as soon as possible," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. We'll let you know as soon as possible how this will affect Lewis' fantasy availability, but by now hopefully his owners have already made provisions for being without him for anywhere from two to four games.

Suspension Coming Soon for RB Jamal Lewis

Jay Glazer, of Fox Sports, reports on Foxsports.com that Baltimore Ravens RB Jamal Lewis will be suspended two-games and receive an additional two-week fine. The only holdup on the final decision will come from NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who needs to sign off on the decision. He could push the suspension to four games Friday, Oct. 8.

End of quote.

Nothing is set until Friday, and the sources may not be getting everything on target.  But in the meantime, Taylor and Smith could benefit.  This week they play, Washington.  The Redskins lead the NFL in run defense.

I think it happened after he was drafted though.   Don't know if he'd signed a contract, or if simply being drafted shackles you to the NFL's CBA.
