Title: Last minute help for Monday Night
Post by lumber2121 on Nov 29th, 2004, 8:20am
Here is the situation.  I am currently losing (101 to 79) to the team with whom I am tied for the division lead.  The team that is two games back just won this week.  One of the three of us will win the division.  One of the three of us will likely get the wild card.  You guessed it, one of the three of us will not make the playoffs.

The team I am playing has no one playing tonight.  I have M. Faulk and R. Longwell.  My one question is this; should I start N. Davenport over Faulk?  Green Bay gives up an average of 111 rushing yards per game and has allowed 7 rushing touchdowns.  Meanwhile, the St. Louis defense has averaged 137 rushing allowed and has given up a total of 9 rushing touchdowns this year.

It appears that A. Green is not going to play tonight.  Davenport has a tender hamstring, but practiced this week.

I think I should go with Faulk, but I just wanted to get some feedback.

I'm hearing A. Green MIGHT play tonight.  Take no chances, start Faulk; that's what I would do.

Play it safe and go with Marshall Faulk.  I wouldn't want my season to hinge upon Najeh Davenport...

Thanks for the input.  Faulk will remain as my starter.  Wish me luck.

Who would have guessed that Davenport would explode the way he did last night?  I certainly did not.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that Faulk will retire after this season.  I have heard that he admired Robert Smith for going out on top and Faulk has said he would like to do the same.  Despite his poor outings the last couple of weeks, Faulk has had a pretty good year.  However you can see that he does not have the burst that he used to.

Okay, I am going to ask a "between the 20's" question here (the thread's begun, so it's cool)...

lumberman, in this league you are permitted to make changes in your lineup right up until Monday night.  I am sure that you can only make changes that ONLY involve players in the Monday night game, right?  Do you do the same with all of the start times?  Most pointedly, can you adjust things before the second set of games?  Still, though, isn't it both a headache administratively and a sketchy practice philosophically?  When putting in a lineup for the week, you (may) often (want to) tailor it to your opponent's roster (not lineup, surely; you shouldn't know that) while making educated guesses about what his starting lineup might be.  The more information you have about that, the better you can do that, so isn't this way of doing lineups a disadvantage to the team that has more earlier games?  Not to mention, you have more information about what your guys did to adjust to.

Your points are all very valid.  However, my league run on the CBS Sportline site and I think that is just how they do things.  I actually had a conversation about this topic last night over poker with some buddies who are in my league.  It does seem very odd and unfair that I could have changed my lineup on Monday when some other guys had to set their lineups some much earlier.  I wonder if we can change the rules on CBS Sportsline.  If I could set up the league so that the lineups all had to e in and complete before the first games.

I'll chime in here just because I am a member of cbs and have been faced with the same exact situation as have others in my league.

I personally don't think it as that much of an advantage to be able to change out players in a later game.

The rules as is in my league are : player lineups have to be in 5 minutes before each game.

Thats fair for everyone since, everyone has to be under the torque of that rule.

If you want to have a so called "advantage" of choosing players in later games then, you do that at the risk of losing out on players that could've blown up in earlier games just because of a "quesitonable" advantage you thought you may have had by playing late-game players.

However, in my league we start ALOT of players each game. Pretty much on a weekly basis, almost EVERY owner has a chance to play late-game players or not.

So it pretty much evens out one way or another in regards to an advantage or disadvantage.

Last thing : it can also be a disadvantage.

This week inparticular, I had a decision to make between Holt and Ash to start at my #3 wr spot.

Ash played on sunday night and Holt on monday night.

I originally before the 1:00 est games placed Ash in my starting lineup.

After thinking about it some more, with Holt going up against GB's 2ndary, right before the sunday night game (5 minutes before is the rule cbs follows) I changed my pick to Holt.

I won the game anyhow but, Holt cost me 2.2 points less than what Ash produced and in a close FF game - which is exactly what it was for me - I could've easily lost my match by using the "advantage" of being able to flex my lineup in later games.

In this case, it was a disadvantage. And almost a game.
