Title: who to start at RB?!
Post by geojon on Dec 16th, 2004, 10:12am
Hi.

In the p-offs this week. Here's my staff:

Edge at home v. Baltimore
Davis away v. Chicago
Jones away v. Philly
Portis away v. S.F.

1 pt/yd 50pts/td

I'm leaning toward Edge and Davis, but the others are better match-ups. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Edge and Davis are good picks.  This is similar to someone else's RB dilemma.  Portis could have a good game against the 49ers.  He has been inconsitent and it is tough to gamble in the playoffs.  Go with Edge and Davis.

With ALL DUE RESPECT to lumberman, I say you gotta go matchup here, on the Portis front at least.  Personally, I would go with Julius Jones against the "don't break, BUT bend" Eagles" over Edge and Davis, as well.  Sorry to muddle things here!  But, I seriously would go with Portis and Jones.  Between Edge and Davis, I would go with Davis, again, based on matchup.  Edge has little to no chance of scoring this week.  The few opportunities they do get, they are going to try to get it in through the air.  Good luck, with this hard decision! I agree with Steg about starting Jones.  Philly can be run on.  However, I don't like Portis... even if it is against S.F.  Instead, I would definitely go with Davis this week.  I also agree with Steg's assessment on Edge.  8-)

Chumpzilla and Stegrock both raise very valid points.  That said, Edge has been very consistent and he usually gets his points one way or another.  However, J. Jones could be a safe pick as well.   This is a very tough call.

Of the players listed, I like Portis best.  He has run well recently and the SF defense offers little to no resistance.  The Washington offense should be able to control the game and will look to run the clock down in the 2nd half.

Of the other players, I'd probably go with Edge next.  He has the worst matchup of those listed, but the defense has to respect (and pay a lot of attention to) the Colt passing game.  Edge has been very consistent this year so I'd give him a shot.

I like Dom Davis because of his versatility, but the Chicago defense has played reasonably well when Urlacher has been on the field.  DD's not a bad choice, but this could be a low-scoring affair and he might not find the endzone despite his recent success of doing so.

I like Julius Jones' output recently, but the Eagles can shut down a RB when they want to.  They've only allowed 2 RBs to rush for 100 yards against them this year (I thought they were soft???).  Since the Eagles have put Jeremiah Trotter back in the middle they've been very stout against the run.  I'd avoid JJ this week.

This one is a toughie for sure. I'm pretty much set on playing Portis. The match-up is overwhelming and Gibbs is featuring the run in his offense. The RB is more problematic. Here is the way I see it:

JJones: injury depleted Philly defense+Parcells penchant for running the ball=potential big game for JJ

DDavis: he rocked last week and this week he goes to the frigid north to play the Urlacher-less Bears. Possible second big game for this back

Edge: playing at home against a playoff-fired up Ravens D.  But he runs, he catches passes, just can't leave him out of the line-up.

Am I missing something here?

Right now, I'm leaning toward Edge.

Anybody talk me out of it?

Tks.

Wow, that's an impressive crop of runningbacks.

Edge at home v. Baltimore
Davis away v. Chicago
Jones away v. Philly
Portis away v. S.F.

I would actually go with Dominick Davis, and Clinton Portis.

Davis has essentially comprised the Texan offense since he shook the injury bug over the last few weeks, and the Bears are definitely without Urlacher.

Also Portis because this years Redskins are all about defense and trying to run the ball.    There is virtually no way San Francisco, even at home, are going to create a need for Washington to have to play catchup.  What is more likely is that the Redskins control the game from the start, and attempt to run Portis all day.

It's a tough decision to bench Julius Jones and Edgerrin James, but like Philly pointed out, the Eagles run defense has been quite strong over the last month or so, and the strength of the Ravens very solid defense is stopping the run.

One thing to consider may be the outcome of the Carolina/Atlanta game.  If Atlanta wins, then Philadelphia still needs a win to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.  This would maybe make benching Julius Jones an easier decision.

how can we be doubting portis? are you reading the redskin reports? come on now! portis will get you 100 yards and a TD at least this week....dont sit portis! as for edge and dom davis i would play dom......but this week i think julius jones is the best second play you have....and make sure to read the fantasy reports!  so start portis and jones....reap the benefits brother!

and note to philly! the run defense is soft! they jus get so far ahead of teams have to get away from the run...they can be run on!
