ESPNews reports Arizona Cardinals RB Emmitt Smith, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, will retire from the NFL.

A bit of a surprise. I really thought Emmitt looked to have gotten a second wind this past season.

So, Emmitt's done it. I must admit, after this season, I don't think he need have had to. To me it looked like he had a decent amount gas left in the tank and he was on a team that maybe, just maybe is on the upswing going into '05. They are in a WEAK division; they've got solid weapons on offense, and I think Denny Green will get it together down there soon. All of that said, he is going out with class and not completely spent. We didn't have to watch a former legend become washed-up before our eyes.

As a life-long DALLAS COWBOYS fan, all I can really say is: Thank You Emmitt, for all the thrills and memories and for displaying class on and off the field!!!

Sad to see emmit go :'(. Its not like he still couldn't play because he was just short of 1000 yards this season. He can still produce and help out the team. it wasn't unexpected but still sad...
