Title: 49ers Offseason Report
Post by Callie on Feb 22nd, 2005, 8:46pm
Don't know if I should start this, but it's good!

The 9ers have franchised LB J. Peterson again.  This gives them the chance to focus on changes very much needed in SF.

In 2004 a guy in one of my leagues (with just one IDP position) grabbed him and scored HUGE points for it.  If Peterson can stay healthy this year.....

Wow.  The 49ers have done at least one smart thing this year!  They had to keep Peterson.  Without him, they would have no presence in the middle.  Everything I have read said that Nolan needed Peterson to make the defense formation changes he wanted.

9ers sign LT Jonas Jennings:

Maybe Rattay will survive after all ;D

Nolan impressed by QB Smith & still plan to visit w/ David Boston.

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/03/17/SPGQ8BQMM51.DTL

"Boston has played his best football under current 49ers wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan. The two were paired in Arizona where Boston became a rising star in the NFL. Under Sullivan's guidance, Boston led the NFL with 1,598 receiving yards on 98 receptions in 2001 and was selected to the first Pro Bowl of his career."

Boston to the '9ers seeming increasingly likely...  From "The REAL Feed (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)":

Niners Contemplating Move For Boston, But Not Rivers (http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/sports/040105ap_sp_49ers.html)
KGO: Sports (02.04.2005 08:59)
David Boston is much more likely to end up in a San Francisco uniform than Philip Rivers, although 49ers rookie coach Mike Nolan isn't ruling out any move leading to the NFL draft.

Do you guys think he would be a good fit there?  I'm kind of thinking yes, he could be.

Big talk from Alex Smith according to "The REAL Feed":

49ers notes: Smith boasts he has lead on Rodgers (http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/12718414p-13570654c.html)
The Sacramento Bee: Sports (13.04.2005 09:19)
SANTA CLARA - On the field, Utah's Alex Smith figures he's one up on Cal's Aaron Rodgers. But it remains to be seen if that means anything to the 49ers, who could take one of the highly rated quarterbacks with the first pick in the NFL draft.

What do you all think... Jeffrey, [smiley=crystalball.gif] our draft guru?

I think right now that Aaron Rodgers is the better QB of the two and will be selected first overall.  Down the road, I think Alex Smith has more upside because of his athleticism and his coachability.

"For the third straight season the 49ers will face a grueling travel schedule. With opponents from the NFC East, AFC South and a contest in Mexico City, the 49ers will rank at the top of the league in terms of travel miles. The team will log 30,506 miles in the regular season."

Just what the 9ers needed.   ::)

C Jeremy Newberry's repaired knee is acting up:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/05/19/SPGF4CR6991.DTL

The 9ers have been doing  lot of revamping on their O line this off-season, with plans for a finally healthy Newberry as anchor.  If Newberry spends another season mostly riding the pine due to injury it could have major implications for 49er skill players fantasy-wise.

Niners sign ex-Chiefs' WR Morton:

"Morton could be an immediate starter for the lowly 49ers, who parted ways with Cedrick Wilson and Curtis Conway after going 2-14 last season. Morton joins Brandon Lloyd, Arnaz Battle and tight end Eric Johnson as the top targets for Tim Rattay and No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith.

Morton said he could serve as almost a secondary coach because of his experience in the league and with Sullivan."

And, now Smith's ready to take the next step... up!  From "The REAL Feed":

I guess we must read a bit more.  ;D

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9054809/

Rattay is the starter after a short preseason look at Smith (He didn't look so good in the stuff I saw).  But how long will this last? (Meaning how long till Smith works up his chops and can take over at QB1.)  And for that matter, how long until the needful 9er O line gets them BOTH on IR? :-X

Mike Nolan indicated that Tim Rattay was the starter for the whole season, barring injury.  Of course Rattay can't bar injury and I would imagine that poor play or poor record would dictate that Alex Smith get time anyway.

That's the rational man's response and the correct assessment at present. [smiley=bow.gif]
