Title: Chiefs Offseason Report
Post by StegRock on Apr 22nd, 2005, 5:41pm
From "The REAL Feed":

Chiefs acquire Surtain from Dolphins (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/news/ABN3859430.htm)
The Sports Network: NFL (22.04.2005 14:45)

KC workin' on shapin' up that secondary.  Surtain (alternate pronunciation) will be a boost, for certain (typical pronunciation). ;)

BIG news currently atop "The REAL Feed":

Chiefs cut Morton (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/news/ABN3926093.htm)
The Sports Network: NFL (02.06.2005 19:14)

Eddie Kennison looked good last year.  He's just got to stay healthy.  His fantasy value goes up!

I think this will also help Gonzo post better numbers than last year since they will be more reliant upon him again.  Does this help Dante Hall or will Marc Boerigter?  Or does one of the young guys (Samie Parker, Crap Thorpe, Jeris McIntyre) step up?

Ask, and ye shall receive... (or, maybe the lesson is look for the answer before you ask...?)

Anyway, this little tidbit appeared on KFFL.  I have not gone to the source to confirm.

Chiefs | Parker may Take Over - from www.KFFL.com

The Capital Journal reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Samie Parker has been working with the first team offense in practice. He is expected to take over for WR Johnnie Morton as the team's No. 2 wide receiver.

I ultimately see Kennison as the greatest beneficiary of this from the perspective of us fantasy footballers (Parker, surely, from an NFL and career point of view).

Here's some more:

"It didn't take long for the Kansas City Chiefs to find a replacement for Johnnie Morton."

"This move gives the Chiefs some insurance if players like Parker, Thorpe and Smith don't get the chance to develop their game this season. They won't have the pressure to play above their capabilities and won't be thrown into the fire before their ready; that might not be a bad thing for this team. With Hakim on the roster, they'll be able to take time to develop their game and if they become better players with a veteran ahead of them, then it's a win-win situation for the Chiefs."

Priest's value goes down, in my opinion.

Building the passing game means the Chiefs don't have to rely so heavily on the running game.  Slowly but surely, the Chiefs will see more WRs getting more touches.

Callie,  Maybe the primary threat to Holme's value in 2005 is 1) his age, wear and tear and 2) the amount of playing time he will lose to Larry Johnson this season.

In terms of the passing game improvement, couldn't you make the argument that it could go either way?  For example, with Johnnie Morton playing opposite Eddie Kennison, defenses could really just focus on Kennison and Gonzalez and the running game.  With a viable third receiver, it forces the defense to respect the additional threat and helps the running game.

If anything, I think adding Hakim might hurt Kennison's value, but I wouldn't expect the running game to be diminished that much.

Actually, if the Chiefs defensive improvements materialize, they could run even more than usual this season.

Your argument makes sense, but the AFC West is changing.  And they play each other twice.  Everyone is concerned about the possibility of high scoring games and the need to outscore an opponent.  The Chiefs have a great QB and a great OL and can exploit that for any WR, TE or RB scoring they can accomplish.  Ball control won't be enough, and Priest will be too RBBC to grab so many passes.  By the same argument as you make, boxing up an RB can allow a WR to get down the field.  Green can throw it to him, and I think he will.  More options at WR, more passes possible.  Priest keeps dropping down my board.

Here's the news now... from "The REAL Feed":

Chiefs' Peterson not expecting Vermeil back for 2006 (http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/12600401.htm?source=rss&channel=charlotte_football)
Sports: NFL / Football -- Charlotte.com (09.09.2005 16:46)
When the 2006 NFL season gets under way in 12 months, Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson fully expects his head coach and longtime friend, Dick Vermeil, to be observing it from the porch of his home in Chadds Ford, Chester County, Pa., rather than on the sideline of Arrowhead Stadium.
