Title: Representin' "the Gridiron" against the "experts"
Post by StegRock on Sep 8th, 2005, 4:46pm
Everybody,

This is for that JunkyardJake.com/FantasyFootballXtreme.com league in which I am representin' FantasyFootballer.com against other web sites and their owners.  As such, I'll give you, my esteemed colleagues here on "the Gridiron", [smiley=bow.gif] some input.  I am in a quandary as to who to start at RB, WR and TE.

RB choices (select 2):
Tiki vs. Arizona
Edge @ Baltimore
Willie P. vs. Tennessee
Freddie T. vs. Seattle

WR choices (select 3):
Braylon vs. Cincinnati
Horn vs. Carolina
J. Smith vs. Seattle
Ward vs. Tennessee
M. Williams vs. Green Bay

(Why can't I start 3 RB's, right?)

TE choices (select 1):
R. McMichael vs. Denver
L. J. Smith @ Atlanta

Okay, fellow Gridironers, HAVE AT IT!!!  This is the first league of this kind I am participating in.  Got to do well! [smiley=yes.gif]

1st off, nice team!   You represented us well already via the draft man!   [smiley=bow.gif]

I am not a Tiki fan, but if you get rec. pts, he deserves a look.   And I hate to bench Edge, but I would.   I say it's the Willie and Freddie show, unless we get rec. pts, then I'd go Tiki over Freddie.

Gotta start Ward & Horn.   Don't really like Joe Horn's matchup, but he's a must start IMO.   As much as I'd like to take a chance on MWilliams due to his GB matchup, I think we need to stick with ole Jimmy.  I'd say Ward, Horn & Smith.

TE, I'd take Smith.  Ferrotte was never much of a TE guy in Minny.

Good Luck!

RB...

Tiki: Tiki's gonna go nuts, gotta go w/Tiki.
Edge: Even v. Ravens, Edge is a mainstay, he'll get his.

WR...
Horn: Gotta go w/ Joe every week.
J. Smith: A sneaky feeling that one is going to be high scoring.
Ward: absolutely.

TE: L.J., no brainer.

Conventional picks all, but it's the beginning of the season. That's what I do. Adjust as the season progresses

...for what it's worth (my opinion)..
tiki - because hes the man - even w/ my boy bj in the fold...
willie - tn. offense better - defense NOT...
horn - naturally - and he has some intangible motivation
smith - i think he's gonna be scary good this year - (wish i had him)...
ward - he's gonna get whatever they get (i think), which'll be good...
toss-up on te - but i'm diggin' lj smith... [smiley=cheers.gif]...good luck, mate...

Okay,... Week 2!  A little late here, I know. :-[ I only have one question this week...

Which three receivers should I go with?

Joe Horn
Hines Ward
Jimmy Smith
Braylon Edwards
Mike Williams
(or Free-agent Frisman Jackson)

Come on now, fellas...  Let's get it up [smiley=dick.jpg] for "the Gridiron"! [smiley=joker.gif]

Horn/Ward/Smith =  gotta go with those three pretty much everyweek until Mike Williams or Edwards really proves they can put up decent numbers for more than one week.

Okay,... since the voting was SO decisively one-sided, I've gone (and come to my senses, I suppose... hope) and went with the receivers ALL of you agreed upon and, thus, with the SAME EXACT lineup as last week.  To be honest, what I was thinking was to give Edwards the start in place of J. Smith this week based on 1) matchup, 2) the fact that good old Jimmy is famous for being an up-and-down type of receiver, and 3) wanting to make some kind of change because of the old "cycles" theory, i.e., the fact that this crew put up the HIGHEST [smiley=awwgee.gif] score in the league last week means that I could be in for a rough week this week unless I make some changes.  ...  It was only ONE change, anyway, so... [smiley=idontknow.gif] Any other LAST-MINUTE thoughts???

Well Steg, you know how that works.
Edwards in most cases would NOT have outdone Jimmy
He just happened to be on the receiving end of an 80 yd td.
He still only had 3 catches, and last week he only had 2, so I think they are working him in slowly.

How do you think I feel, I started Bryant over him....
With Dilfer chucking the rock for me!!

Arrrrrrrrrgh!!

I made the safer choice, but it didn't work out for me either.

I got and agree with your point about making the choice, muzz (unexpected shit, like 80-yard TD catches, happens), but, regarding scope...  I'm not just representing myself here.  I am... we are "representin'" the site in this league.  We want to do our best to get the "good word" about "the Gridiron" out and this is one of those conduits.

...

In any event, our allegiances tonight for "the Gridiron"...

We are rooting FOR Tiki Barber, Joe Horn and the Redskins Defense & Special Teams. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

We are rooting AGAINST Drew Bledsoe, Donte Stallworth and Jason Whitten. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

[smiley=fingerscrossed.gif]

The game is tight.  He's got the edge right now.  All you guys, give ALL your "energy"! [smiley=zenmaster.gif] You guys will be watching the games live.  I'll be getting them tape-delayed. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Thanks for the kudos, lumberman! [smiley=bow.gif] We're lookin' good... [smiley=fingerscrossed.gif]

...

I gotta question...  Right now we are in our "first come, first serve" free-agency period.  David Akers was just dropped tonight.  I know he is injured and all, but isn't he worth swooping up right now.  I've got Josh Brown.  It's not like he's lighting it up and if it looks like Akers can't go on Sunday (which I personally don't think will be the case; I think they'll just protect him now on kickoffs and stuff), in that case I can always drop him last-minute and pick up one from the litter.  Should I go and grab him???  I'm thinking I should...

Title: Re: Who to start... for "the Gridiron"?
Post by lumber2121 on Sep 22nd, 2005, 9:18am
Who would you dump to pick up Akers?  Would you roll the dice that he is ready to go Sunday and dump Brown.  That would be pretty risky.  It is a tough call.

Akers has missed 3 or 4 attempts this year, if my memory serves me correctly.  While they have all been from over 40 yards, he still needs to start hitting some of these to be valuable.  Kicking seems to be a very streaky profession.

Brown hit 92% of his kicks last year and the offense seems to be doing pretty well so far.

Due to the risk involved with Akers having a strained hamstring and his recent inaccuracy, I would probably stick with Brown.

Again, this is a tough call.

Fellas,

Who do I go with this week at WR?  I really have no inkling one way or the other.

Bryant, Antonio CLE WR at Ravens
Horn, Joe NOS WR vs Falcons (Questionable)
Smith, Jimmy JAC WR at Steelers Sun (Probable)
Taylor, Travis MIN WR at Bears
Ward, Hines PIT WR vs Jaguars (Questionable)

Rather than just provide me lists, I'd like to hear your arguments.  That's what will make the difference.  I'm really torn this week.

Thanks! [smiley=bow.gif]

Title: Re: Representin' "the Gridiron" against the "exper

Horn and Ward are the two best receivers.  However, they are both questionable with hamstring injuries.  I would only start one of the two in order to mitigate your risk of losing a receiver to re-injury during the game.

Horn has been able to practice this week.  If he practices hard today, I would go with him.

Ward has not practiced all week and may be a game time decision.  Cowher said if Ward can go, he will play.  Ward has NEVER missed a game in his professional career.  That streak is bound to end some time and it could be this week.  Plus, Batch may start.  This cannot help Ward's value.

Jimmy Smith is the most logical other choice.  He is more solid than Taylor or Bryant.  Bryant is going against the Ravens and Taylor is going against the Bears.  Granted Smith is playing the Steelers.  My point is that Bryant or Taylor would have to have a more favorable matchup than Smith in order to bench Smith.

Go with Smith and either Horn or Ward, whoever appears more healthy.

I'd give a slight edge to Horn because even though Brooks sucks...at least he has report with Horn. Batch to Ward???? How many times have you heard that? Dare I say ......NEVER!! [smiley=fireman.gif]

If you find yourself needing to start Taylor or Bryant...go with Bryant  I say this only because of his newfound success with Dilfer. But...and this is a pretty big BUT...the Ravens (ranked 4th)are a tad bit more stingy with their pass "D" than the Bears (ranked 7th)! BTW, they are both on the road!

MordCourage

I agree that IF Horn and Ward cannot go, Bryant is a better call than Taylor.  The difference between the 4th and 7th ranked pass defense is not huge so I would go with the more solid performer (i.e. Bryant over Taylor)

1) J. Smith
2) Horn or Ward
3) Bryant
4) Taylor

Title: Re: Representin' "the Gridiron" against the "exper
Post by rickgpin on Oct 14th, 2005, 1:32pm
1) smith at steelers
with running game at risk with injuries and steelers challenging the jags to pass, smith is the go to guy.
2) ward vs jaguars
may be a game time decision. having a good year, only 4 tds last year.
3) horn vs falcons
may be a game time decision,  if he plays you have to start him.
4) bryant at ravens
injuries key here but to suggs and edwards. odds are bryant will see the ball.
5) taylor at bears
too tired from party on lake minnetonka to be effective.

good luck!

This is tough.

Ward was questionable last week and he was still effective.  His stats would have been better had they not called back his TD (on an erroneous call IMO).

This guy is like CMart... if he can walk, he can play.  So, I would play Hines unless there is a definitive report saying he is out. The fact that the Steelers are playing the JAGS and Big Ben is out would disuade me more that the injury.  In the end, however, I would still go with Ward.

oh.  then I would go with Smith, Ward and Taylor.

Travis looked good two games ago.  I was monitoring the last game (2 weeks ago) over the internet and he had all of his catches in garbage time on one drive.  I think Dante looks for Taylor (although I have him and am playing Muhsin over him for no particular reason).

I am seeing reports that Ward is stretching/warming up.  I still don't think he will play.  Everything he has said this week points to him not playing.  Lots of people/places saying that Maddox will be the starter at QB.  I still wouldn't be surprised if Big Ben gets that nod though... I have more faith in what Ward says than reports of Roeth (who seems to play with / lie to the media).

On the other hand the main thing I have seen regarding Horn is that he said he will play.

Everything I've read is that Akers has looked good in practice (end of practice week) and will be very much up to the FG attempts that may be necessary with the Eagles' various problems.

In other words, I think you're OK with Akers.

Okay,... we're still sittin' pretty atop our division by THREE games!  Got a few "situations" I'd like to run by yous...

At #2 RB; pick one...
Greg Jones @ Tennessee
Heath Evans vs. New Orleans
Willie Parker @ Baltimore
Ricky Williams @ Cleveland
Tiki Barber vs. Philadelphia

At WR; pick THREE of the following four...
Antonio Bryant vs. Miami
Joe Horn @ New England
Jimmy Smith @ Tennessee
Hines Ward @ Baltimore

At TE...
L. J. Smith @ New York Giants
OR
Randy McMichael @ Cleveland

Title: Re: Representin' "the Gridiron" against the "exper
Post by Callie on Nov 19th, 2005, 9:52pm
Ya gotta play Tiki at RB2, no matter what else you've got.  He is always good against the Eagles.

I'd play Joe Horn against the NE secondary.  Jimmy Smith or Hines Ward is a tough call.  Smith plays a bad secondary, but he's still not 100%.  Still, with the QB problem this week in Pittsburgh, I would expect the Steelers to go to the run.  So I'd have to say Horn and Smith at WR.

Sorry about the modify.  I forgot to pick a TE.

I'd play LJ Smith over McMichael.  Cleveland does well against the TE position, and McMichael has his issues.

Thanks, Callie!

BUT, everybody, NOTE the edit to my post above.  The first time around I typed "TWO".  That was a MISTAKE! [smiley=doh.gif] I meant to type "pick THREE of the follow four" wide receivers...  (Based on your response, I can pretty much gather who your third choice would be, Callie.)

Okay,... commence the assist... [smiley=bow.gif]

I agree but I kinda like Bryant over Smith. Jimmy has fallen off the face of the earth lately...He is one of those guys I was counting on who has continually crushed me.

Im good with Call- Girls (ouch!) WR selections. I would however play Greg Jones over Tiki Time. Philly's Defense knows its all on them now. I think they will respond.

Plus I think the fantasy god (Pigskinisis) really likes to F@#* with Tom Coughlin.

Well, I ended up going more along the lines of what MC and sk suggested...

Week 11 Starting Lineup
QB Jake Plummer
RB's Edgerrin James and Greg Jones
WR's Hines Ward, Joe Horn and Antonio Bryant
TE L. J. Smith
PK Jason Elam
D/ST New York Giants
