Title: Heath Miller??????

Heath Miller
:o ?.?.?           [smiley=band.gif]
Can anyone tell me WHY he wouldn't or shouldn't be a stud TE? I can't figure him out. I want to start him because I've heard some stuff about him but he didn't do anything this preseason. (at least they didn't show us anything)

I guess I should start him cause my only other option is Franks!  Any ideas about this anyone??

Started Miller and WON my game by 2 points!!!! Franks would have been the losing choice this time. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The concern for Miller is that he plays on a team that historically has not made much use of their TE as a receiver, and the system right now continues that long tradition.  In Steelerland, a TE is more of a sixth lineman.  So, for the most part, that is where the concerns begin and end.  The question being,... how much will the Steelers adapt their offense to a premier TE that could be a dominant receiving force.  ...  By the way, there is also the secondary "little" concern regarding how f'n bad Roethlisberger and their receiving game looked this preseason.  If they don't break out of their funk, ain't nobody gonna amount to much in that offense.  (Now read the disclaimer below.)

[offtopic]Disclaimer:  The GBRFL does NOT incorporate TE's as a position.  They are brought in through the RC position.  Point being, I am not the most knowledgeable TE guy.  I know enough to know that I only want to play in a league where the best of the best, Gonzalez, Gate, Crumpler, and the like, are being counted.  I don't want to have to sift through the likes of guys for whom a 600-yard, 2-TD year is a good year.[/offtopic]

So, of these two likely 400- to 550-yard, 3- to 5-TD (on average) fantasy factors, I say go with Miller just for the FUN of it.  Playing Franks would be passe.  Who will get the touchdown is probably a coin flip?  It'll probably be Franks, actually.  He had a monstrous seven last season.  They'll both end up with around a whopping 27 yards.  So, on the other hand, if you want to go with the "logical" (as if) choice here, I guess you gotta go with Franks.  But, if you want to go with the "fun" choice, go with Miller.  Good luck! losing is no fun...i love the CONCEPT of a heath miller hookin' up w/ the young qb to be a dynamic duo - but until it happens - it hasn't happened - and like steg said there's no precident for it in pittsburgh...bubba just signed on for a good deal - which bret chimed in on - so they are more batman and robin [smiley=batman.gif] for now...if you need the points, stay w/ franks... ;D food luck,
prm...

Woe to you of short memory.

Has it been that long since Eric Green's Steel tenure?

The Steelers are looking to work the tight end into their passing offense, an option (they felt, even though Mark Bruener was perfectly serviceble) they haven't had since Eric Green's unfortunate cocaine conviction.

Yes, the young quarterback needs a safety valve for thrid downs and check-offs. His backs are old though, and they don't do very much in terms of breaking open-field tackles. Pittsburg needs to play a heavily grinding, clock controlling, mashing and smashing style of football. As such, second-and-short will likely be a running play, and they won't run the athletic on the fades, posts, and deep-ins that give Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, and even Randy McMicheal and Eric Johnson their yardage. That being said, don't count out the possibility of a few red-zone plays being drawn up just for him this year.

In future years this will be an invaluable connection for the Steelers. As the big-butted, hard-nosed backs fade away, the passing offense will open up according to Rothlisberger's maturity. He'll know where his tight end is then.

Oh, LH, thank you for enlightening us.  You mean this Eric Green:

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/GreeEr00.htm.

His numbers are staggering (one really good season)... [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] I can't believe I forgot him, as he is obviously representative of the Steelers tradition at the position. ::)

That said, Heath Miller does exhibit bright potential as a receiver and I do believe that Cowher will evolve his offense in reasonable accordance with his talent.  But, you cannot say that the team's history points in that direction and, moreover, base that argument on Eric Green and then in the process disparage the previous posters, proclaiming short-sightedness on their parts (and not expect a comeback?).

I heard he was struggling to run block. That is scary on so many levels!

Heath Miller was heralded as having one of the BEST pair of hands - if not the BEST pair of hands in this year's rookie draft.

PITT didn't draft him just to block.

Nor did they Draft Roethlisberger just to hand off.

In time, this will BEEcome a very productive pass/catch duo.

::)...all that being said...again, i love the concept of that happening in steeltown - but the question was for THIS weekend - spit into one hand & wish into the other -   [smiley=shrug.gif] which one fills up first??? bret & bubba have been doin' this for awhile - ben & heath haven't YET... so for this weekend, i wouldn't just HOPE my very excellent young new te would score big for me, i'd take whatever bubba gets... ;)

the ORIGINAL QUESTION was :

Can anyone tell me WHY he wouldn't or shouldn't be a stud TE?

My answer was geared towards that particular question and was valid.

On another note :

gamble a bit? take Heath.

play it safe : take Franks.

Wow... someone here is really down on Eric Green.  Eric Green was an outstanding TE for the Steelers.  Sure, he only had one season where he approached 1000 receiving yards, but he had some very nice TD totals for a TE (especially given the QBs he had throwing to him--O'Donnell, Tomczak, Brister).  He was a player that absolutely had to be accounted for in the game plan in light of the many awful WRs that shared the field with him during those years.

I'm not denying his "NFL" impact,... but we're talkin' "fantasy" here.  And, in that light, he had a "decent" career, nothing spectacular at all (again, fantasy-wise) like as was being portrayed/asserted in the argument above.

You see, this is why you need smilies sometimes.

I was being sarcastic earlier, backing up your point that you'd have to go all the way back to Eric Green to find a reliable tight end in the Burgh. Sarcasm is always difficult to establish in print.

Ahhhh...  So, we have found a "substantive" purpose for using smilies, LH, huh??? [smiley=hmmmm.gif] ... ;)
