Title: Lions In-season Report
Post by Callie on Oct 3rd, 2005, 7:01pm
"Detroit Lions receiver Charles Rogers has been notified that he is being suspended for four games because he is in violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy, sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen."

http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/ESPNSports/story?id=1180792

He can still appeal.

I know the Lions O and Joey have been REEEEEAL crappy this season.  So, how much does this cause an increase in Mike Williams's fantasy value?  I realize that this question may just amount to:  is he now worthy of having on a (non-keeper league) fantasy football roster?

Title: Re: Lions In-season Report

I think that ANY Lion has a chance to do better down the road due to their schedule.  The Lions have the toughest part of their schedule on the front end this year and have two more tough games, then the schedule gets easier.  The suspension is for 4 weeks.  Detroit had their bye in Week 3, so that's over.  Williams is currently listed as Rogers' backup.  So for a couple of weeks, probably after the next couple of weeks, who knows.  Depends on your depth at WR and what you get at QB.  I hold off on WRs until they've been around for awhile and show me something.  If you have room on the roster though, it could be a nice risk/reward.

Reports off "the Gridiron Newsstand" from LOCAL sources regarding the Lions' beat-up wideout situation...

"Lions thin on healthy WRs (http://www.freep.com/sports/lions/lions11e_20051011.htm)"

"Lions are short-handed (http://www.detnews.com/2005/lions/0510/12/D03-344805.htm)"

"Once overloaded at WR, Lions now short-handed (http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1129025416191160.xml&coll=1)"

Looks like the time might be right to pick up WR Mike Williams if he's available.  The other Williams, Roy, may be out this week and maybe for a bit longer...  Mike could assume the #1 role...  Stay tuned...

...

Also,... my own speculation,... might Jerry Rice find himself a Detroit Lion before the season's out!?!?!?

Talk about a sneaky-good pick-up now or sometime very soon if he's available in your league...  From LOCAL sources on "the Gridiron Newsstand":

"Garcia finally works in full pads (http://www.detnews.com/2005/lions/0510/16/D07-348446.htm)"

"Lions' Garcia could return for Browns (http://www.freep.com/sports/lions/nfl13e_20051013.htm)"

The saga continues... for a little longer...  From "The REAL Feed":

Lions still undecided on starting QB (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/nfl/wires/10/20/2020.ap.fbn.lions.qbs.0391/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (20.10.2005 18:13)

Mariucci may still be undecided... for "right" now, BUT I'M NOT!!!  In the GBRFL at my #2 QB spot, I plan to start Garcia over Alex Smith.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!! [smiley=pimpin.gif]

Something more to smoke - the Lions' schedule is now into the MUCH better phase for the rest of the season.  Just get the receivers healthy.

Jeffy looked perty good for being just 70% and with a depleted receiving corps.  He and Mike Williams seemed to really be in rhythm.  Cleveland's defense is not a total slouch.  Garcia's performance today portends good things for the future, me thinks... In injury news,... from "The REAL Feed":

I suppose this is non-news really...  KJ wasn't doing much of anything... and he had a chance to with R. Williams and Rogers both out.

This will only last as long as Garcia is gimpy (which could still be a bit, mind you).  I'd keep an eye on rookie QB Dan Orlovsky.

Mooch gets the boot.  I'm thinking that the love affair between Garcia and Mooch went too far.  Joey was clearly not at fault when he was pulled.  Good luck in Green Bay :D

Yea, this very well spells the (bitter) end to Garcia's career.  ...  Did you hear Millen during the press conference say, "We haven't done a good job of developing our young players..."?  I think that was a direct swipe at the Moochster and Jeffy.  Anyway, what a contrast that is to all the media talk about six weeks ago about Harrington's badly needing a change of scenery.  ...  So, who is the starting QB in Detroit... this week... down the line???  Might we be seeing Matt Leinart throwing to Mike Williams again??? [smiley=hmmmm.gif]  ...  In all sincerity, I REALLY think it is Matt Millen that NEEDS to go!!!

The only possible "positive" for the Lions that I've heard in this whole mess is that Kevin Jones may get a little more love with Mooch out.  Anyone have thoughts on that one?

Does Matt Millen actually think that endorsing an already historically legitimized, legendary NFL head coach by saying he'd like to woo him to MoTown somehow legitimizes his tenure as GM? [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] Do you know how ridiculous that is and in how many ways it is?  Parcells is a "bring in his guys" type of guy, not a "develop the youth he's dealt" kind of coach.  Isn't the latter the direction Millen had said they wanted to go in when he fired Mariucci?  And, why in God's name would Parcells, at his age, want to up and leave the Cowboys,... no less for the losing Lions?  Millen is such a... Matt Millen knows what he wants for Christmas. And while Lions fans would say Matt hasn't been a good boy this year, our NFL Czar says the Detroit GM would love to wake up on Dec. 25 and find Bill Parcells in his stocking. Well, not literally.

Would someone just relieve this guy of his duty already,... PLEEEEEASE?!?!

Well, the quarterback carousel continues to spin...  Harrington is back in as starter, which, despite my having Garcia in the GBRFL, I must admit is probably the right thing for them to do in the spirit of "developing their youth".  This is assuming, on the other hand, that it doesn't just cause both them and Harrington to jump back into the quagmire.  Even though I don't think Joey is as bad as he has been with the Lions, they were kind of at a good point to both make a break and move in a new direction with a new quarterback and give him a break and let him try to revitalize his career elsewhere.  A good couple of games here at the "bitter end" of '05 could force them to prolong this (ill-fated) marriage.  From "The REAL Feed":
