Title: 49ers In-season Report
Post by StegRock on Oct 12th, 2005, 7:12pm
[smiley=injury.gif] - For you IDPers, according to sources on "The REAL Feed", Ulbrich's season is, alas, finally been declared over:

Niners LB Ulbrich out for season with arm injury (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/nfl/wires/10/12/2020.ap.fbn.49ers.ulbrich.0539/index.html)

Looks like rookie QB Alex Smith may get a(n unexpected, but much needed) breather (from standing in behind that woeful "offensive" line)...  From "The REAL Feed":

Niners QB Smith limping on sprained knee (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2202814&CMP=OTC-DT9705204233)

UPDATE on Smith... as if anyone in fantasyland was actually contemplating starting him... from "The REAL Feed":

Niners' Dorsey expected to start for limping Smith

That's it...  It's official... as if it matters ::) (to us fantasy footballers)...  Currently from atop "The REAL Feed":

49ers to start Ken Dorsey at QB (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/news/ABN3986578.htm)

And, the quarterback carousel continues to go round-and-round...  From "The REAL Feed":

Pickett likely to be 49ers' next starting QB (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/nfl/wires/10/31/2020.ap.fbn.49ers.pickett.1st.ld.writethru.0680/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (31.10.2005 21:45)

Thinkin' about pickin' Pickett up...  Don't bother... [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] I just threw that sentence in for alliteration affect. [smiley=awwgee.gif]

49ers sign Giant QB Jesse Palmer

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/11/02/SPG3NFHGBE1.DTL

"Signing Palmer could be a canny move by the 49ers, because Palmer knows the Giants' offense well. Between Palmer and defensive coordinator Billy Davis, who coached linebackers in New York last season, the 49ers should have the Giants (5-2) completely cased."

Looks like Cody may have to fight for the start.

Though of questionable value at best from a fantasy perspective,... currently from atop "The REAL Feed":

RB Kevin Barlow (knee) is now a gametime decison!  Back-up Maurice Hicks has been looking good when he gets a chance, and Gore is also out.  Looks like Hicks is a nice sneaky sleeper against ARI's run D this week.  He has speed and gets some very nice big plays.

See the 9er Team Report put up before this news!

In my 49er team report, I reported that RB Frank Gore would be out and that Kevin Barlow would start.

New news, guys & gals - Although an MRI on Barlow's knee showed no structural damage, it looks like he may not play today.  On the other hand, Gore is looking like he will play after all, backing up Mo Hicks, who looks like he will get the bulk of the touches.  This is a 4:00 (ET) game, so it might be tough to catch something definitive in time for lineups, but keep your eyes and ears open.  Hicks could be one terrific sleeper this week, if you need him.

Here's the corroboration on Barlow's being OUT this week, Cheryl, all, from "The REAL Feed":

Barlow out for 'Niners, Young set to return (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nfl/news/ABN3994320.htm)
The Sports Network: NFL (16.12.2005 20:43)

Not that any tailback running the ball for the 49ers this week against Jacksonville is a good play, at any rate, however.

Rhetoric aside,... Barlow... DONE!  From "The REAL Feed":

The rumors were right!  Former Raiders head coach Norv Turner hired by the 9ers as their new offensive coordinator:

Singletary staying with the 9ers!

"Assistant head coach Mike Singletary will stay with the 49ers after he was removed from the list of candidates for the Detroit Lions' head coaching job, San Francisco coach Mike Nolan said Tuesday."

http://www.49erswebzone.com/cgi-bin/news/news.cgi?action=display&num=4466

"The 49ers expect to lose just two assistants from Nolan's first coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy was hired as the Green Bay Packers' head coach last week, and offensive quality control assistant Ben McAdoo will follow him to become the Packers' tight ends coach, Nolan said."

Let the building continue....

"West Coast on the way out?  Norv Turner might have grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Martinez, but he does not consider himself a West Coast guy when categorizing his offensive philosophy. Now that Turner is the 49ers' new offensive coordinator, the days of the organization's so-called West Coast offense have officially come to an end."

http://49ers.scout.com/2/490766.html

"As for his offensive philosophy, Turner outlined his thoughts of using a power running game and making big plays in the passing game."

Everything I've heard says that we're looking at an RBBC in San Francisco in 2006, and that we need to watch QB Alex Smith's progress.  The TE spot should be back to good in terms of fantasy.  If Smith or someone else can do it, the WRs should also be worth watching for your FF drafts.  The question is, when....
