I really wish someone would give this guy a "legitimate" shot to make it.  I never though he looked that bad.  It was his team that was.  Unfortunately, going from the expansion Browns to the still "expanding" Texans probably isn't going to make that wish of mine come true.  And, if even if it did, it would be at the expense of another of my wishes, namely that David Carr be given a legit shot at making it. :-/

To me, it makes total sense. They have a good your RB in Dom Davis and a nice young QB in David Carr. What they need is someone to keep Carr upright, like D'Brickshaw Ferguson. Trade down a few spots and get an extra pick or 2, and a solid LT for years to come.

I think Cowart Will get the MLB spot and they will move greenwood to weakside leaving Wong on the strong side....nice pick up for them because they did not have a true MLB for a 4-3.....cowart will be a good fill in....Flanagan was gonna help any team he joined so that was a nice way to start fixing their line...

Continuing to import front seven players as they transition to a 4-3 alignment in 2006, the Houston Texans have reached agreement with unrestricted defensive end N.D. Kalu of the Philadelphia Eagles, who will sign a one-year contract with the club.

A nine-year veteran, Kalu becomes the second defensive end added by the Texans in free agency, joining former Baltimore Ravens starter Anthony Weaver, who signed in the first week of the signing period. Weaver already is penciled in as the starter at left end. Kalu likely will be a situational pass rusher.

The Texans played a 3-4 front under former coach Dom Capers for the first four seasons of their existence, but rookie coach Gary Kubiak prefers a 4-3 defense. That means several holdover players will be forced to switch positions, with some linebackers moving to defensive end and a few ends moving to tackle, and it also means an infusion of veterans more familiar with the 4-3 techniques.

In addition to Weaver and Kalu, the Texans last week signed veteran linebacker Sam Cowart, because he has played the middle spot in a traditional 4-3 front.

Kalu will provide an affordable insurance policy, probably at right end, as young linebackers Jason Babin and Antwan Peek move to end. Kalu, 30, was also sought by Atlanta, and visited with Falcons officials late last week, before deciding to sign with the Texans.

The move to the Texans will be a homecoming of sorts for Kalu, who played collegiately at Rice, and who still has ties to the community.

In 104 games, Kalu has 157 tackles, 26 sacks, four forced fumbles, four recoveries, one interception and eight passes defensed. Mostly known as an upfield rusher, he posted 13½ sacks in 2002-2003 while with the Eagles, but then suffered a season-ending knee injury in the summer of 2004. He returned for the '05 season, appeared in 15 games, and registered 30 tackles and two sacks.

Kalu began his career with Philadelphia in 1997, signed with Washington in 1998 for three seasons, then returned to the Eagles in 2001.

The deal for Moulds is now complete:

ESPN reports that the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans have worked out a trade that will send disgruntled receiver Eric Moulds to the Texans. Terms of the trade are unknown, but it is believed that the Bills will gain a second-day draft pick in 2005, and another second-day pick in 2006.

Moulds' contract has been renegotiated with the Texans. He will sign a four-year, $14 million deal that includes a $5 million signing bonus.

You know...  Maybe the Texans over-thought this one,... BUT maybe, just maybe, they didn't.  They got a great player,... moreover,... one in from the get-go.  No hold-out concerns here!  I, for one, am not going to be so closed-minded about their drafting Williams over Bush!  We pretty much all agreed that the Texans weren't the best fit for Bush and vice-versa.  We were saying that they should have traded the pick.  Instead, they went with Super Mario.  I could see some serious bloodied, bitten tongues when this all comes out in the wash...

There's NOTHING structurally wrong with the knee.  He just needs to get used to running with a sore-ish knee.  That's part of life as a MULTI-MILLION-$$$$$$ NFL starting tailback.  The question is,... "Will he?"  They didn't NOT draft Reggie Bush to have Davis crap out on them...

Convinced that his left knee would preclude him from being ready for the start of the season, and that he probably would not be a factor this year because of his continuing physical problems, the Houston Texans on Saturday placed tailback Domanick Davis on injured reserve.

By definition, the move ends Davis' 2006 season before it even began and means that coach Gary Kubiak will go into his debut campaign without the leading rusher in franchise history. The decision to place Davis on injured reserve, and allow him to rehabilitate for 2007, came after considerable deliberation and after much input from the team's medical staff.

Houston is now perilously inexperienced at tailback and the loss of Davis will lend further scrutiny to the Texans' decision to bypass Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and instead choose defensive end Mario Williams with the top overall selection in the 2006 draft. In defense of the Texans, team officials could not have envisioned at draft time that the seemingly innocuous injury that Davis suffered in the final month of last season would have sidelined him for such a prolonged period.

The starter for the Sept. 10 season opener will be rookie Wali Lundy, a sixth-round draft choice from the University of Virginia. The backup is second-year veteran Vernand Morency, a third-round pick in 2005 who logged only 46 carries in his rookie season.

Houston released veteran running back Antowain Smith on Friday and the Texans might be forced to scour the waiver wire this weekend in an attempt to add depth at the position.

There were rumors earlier this week, which Kubiak was forced to debunk, that the Texans were prepared to release Davis if his knee did not quickly respond to treatment. But because of the injury, Houston essentially could not have cut Davis and, had the team attempted to, it would almost certainly have faced a grievance.

After the reports, Kubiak acknowledged that Davis was likely destined for injured reserve. At the same time, Houston owner Bob McNair conceded that medical reports on Davis' knee were "not very positive."

Davis, 25, missed five games in 2005 and underwent December arthroscopic surgery to repair the lateral meniscus cartilage in his left knee. Since early in camp, Davis had been sidelined by a bruised left knee, but that condition was not related to the surgery of eight months ago.

Houston could not have placed Davis on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which would have sidelined him for at least the first six weeks of the season but also but some time for him to recover, because he passed the team physical at the outset of camp and actually participated in the first two days of practices. That left the Texans with two options: Keep Davis on the active roster and hope that he showed marked improvement, or place him on injured reserve, ending his 2006 season.

A fourth-round pick in the 2003 draft, Davis was projected mostly as a kickoff return specialist when the Texans selected him, but the former LSU standout claimed the starting tailback job near the middle of his rookie season and rushed for 1,031 yards in his debut campaign.

In three seasons, he has 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns on 770 carries, and only the knee injury in 2005 kept him from a third straight 1,000-yard season. Davis, who has made himself into a dependable receiver, also has 154 catches for 1,276 yards and five touchdowns.
