With all the running back talent out there, I am not sure I totally understand this.  Foster will get average of top ten salaries OR 120% of his 2005 salary, which ever is greater.  Ultimately, as the transition player, the Panthers have right of first refusal if another team comes a calling.  BUT, with all the injuries he has had, I thought they would of gone another direction.  Edge, Alexander, and so many other good backs are available.

?.?.? ?.?.?

I'm glad I'm not a betting man!   >:(  I was convinced they were going after Edge.  Now there's one less team in the sweepstakes? ?.?.?

Read my lips... :-* It's ALL about their belief in ERIC SHELTON!!!  This guy's going to be a MONSTER!!! [smiley=tough.gif] That's why they don't want one of the even MORE expensive blue-chippers like Edge.  But, in that case, with Davis on the way out, they need to keep a proven and, moreover, COMPLEMENTARY, albeit fragile, talent like Foster around, at least for one more year.  Foster, though he will, all things equal, be being paid probably more than he is worth, comes cheaper than, e.g., Edge, and they'll only be married to him for one year, as opposed to one of the big-ticket guys, again, like Edge, who is going to want a multi-year deal.  A Shelton-Foster one-two punch is ACTUALLY PERFECT.  As Shelton is built in the mold of Davis, it just allows the Panthers to perpetuate the kind of huge success they had with the Davis-Foster backfield.  Except, as we all know, Foster isn't likely to last a whole season.  So, just like Davis was typically the better guy (to have for fantasy football purposes) of the two, although he too couldn't last a whole season, mind you, Shelton will be, as well, i.e., Shelton will be the next Davis, but, hopefully he won't develop the kind of injury history that Davis did, which would, again, make for MONSTER numbers and a MONSTER career... with or/and then without Foster around.

WSOCTV.com reports that the Carolina Panthers have released running backs Stephen Davis and Rod Smart.

Davis is a former starter who struggled to come back from microfracture surgery in 2005. Smart is a former XFL star that has been a solid special teams performer.

This puts just a bit of crimp in my Shelton predictions...  From "The REAL Feed":

Foster agrees to 3-year deal with Panthers (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/nfl/wires/03/11/2020.ap.fbn.panthers.foster.2nd.ld.writethru.0677/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (12.03.2006 09:40)

But, still, his wages aren't "over the top".  They do love that big back-slasher back (Davis-Foster) one-two punch configuration, and Davis, the bigger back, was typically the "greater" beneficiary of it.  Furthermore and ultimately, the greater concern with Foster is his apparent proneness to injury.  If or WHEN Foster goes down, expect Shelton to step in in a BIG way.

Panthers sign another DT

Panthers | D. Lewis agrees to terms

(KFFL) Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports the Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with free agent DT Damione Lewis (Rams) on an undisclosed deal.

They also signed Maake Kemoeatu-DT to a 5 year 27.5 million deal i cant find it now...means big numbers for Morgan this year?

The Panthers announce a big signing.  MeShawn is going to Carolina.  I wonder how he will get along with Coach Fox?

This is great news for Panther fans.  They now have a true #2 WR to go along with Smith.  This will not be much different than in Dallas.  MeShawn will handle the short stuff and Smith will handle the deep routes.

This is a great signing for the Panthers.

I thought the Eagles might step up but I guess they are overloaded at WR with Pinkston, Gaffney, and Lewis ::)

Don't worry yourself with the Eagles.  They'll be ready to step up immediately when the Skins take out the "Thrash."

RB Shelton On Verge Of Being Cut
Charles CHanlder, Charlotte Observer

Carolina Panthers RB Eric Shelton, a second-round pick in 2005, hasn't looked very good in camp and looks almost certain to be among the team's final cuts. OC Dan Henning gave a candid analysis of Shelton's status. "He does not show the types of abilities, and hasn't since he's been here, to be that back who can be an every-down back or even a third-down back," said Henning. "We go by what we see and you have to give the opportunity to the people you think are going to be playing." Shelton has only six rushing attempts this preseason.
