Title: 49ers Offseason Report
Post by Callie on Mar 6th, 2006, 7:59pm
49ers Re-Sign LB Smith!!!

http://www.sf49ers.com/newsroom/DisplayNews.asp?newsid=3187

"We are excited about retaining Derek as member of the 49ers team," Nolan said. "We were diligent in our efforts to retain Derek as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and we are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that reflects his value to the team while addressing future needs of the club."

This is very, very big news for 9er fans!

Niners trade disgruntled WR to Redskins

The San Francisco 49ers traded leading receiver Brandon Lloyd to Washington on Saturday for the Redskins' third-round pick this year and their fourth-round selection in 2007.

http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/sports/football/14076795.htm

San Francisco signed Lloyd to an offer sheet earlier in the month, but Lloyd seemed eager to leave town - and Washington seems enamored with his highlight-reel skills. He was scheduled to visit the Redskins' training complex Sunday.

49ers:  Bryant optimistic
The News

The 49ers' top offensive coaches met for several hours Sunday with free-agent receiver Antonio Bryant, who left optimistic the two sides would agree to a deal, reports the Sacramento Bee. "It's looking up, and everything seems to be heading in the right direction," said Bryant.
Our View

The Niners are thin at wideout, having lost Bradon Lloyd and Johnnie Morton in recent weeks. There have been many questions surrounding Bryant's maturity, but there's no question about his talent. His is coming off his best season, a 1,009-yard receiving effort for the Browns. However, those numbers could be a flash in the pan if he lands in San Francisco and quarterback Alex Smith fails to improve

I guess Bryant had reason to be optimistic: Signed, sealed, and delivered, some help for Alex Smith:

Eh...  It'll ultimately be Arnaz Battle's job to lose...  This is actually bigger news from the Brownies' [smiley=dog.gif] perspective... (continued on Browns thread...)

The San Francisco Air Force adds another piece!!

Packers agree to send Javon Walker to San Francisco
(http://www.49erswebzone.com/content/news/tmp/view.php?id=4990)

The 49ers will receive an instant starter to compliment Antonio Bryant, a recently signed free agent. The Packers will receive San Francisco's 2nd round pick (37th overall) in April's draft. The 49ers were willing to offer more than other interested teams including the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles.

Get outta here!  I said that you had me going for like five minutes...  I wasn't lying!  Clicking on the article was actually the straw that broke the camel's back in my figuring it out!  It's such an obviously bogus page.  Furthermore, there is NO corroboration of this by ANY "reputable" source,... neither big media nor local dailies covering the 49ers or Packers... [smiley=tonguin.gif] And, it's April 1st!!! ;) Come on, now...  I ain't takin' TWO courses in logic for nothin'! [smiley=nerd.gif] ... ;)

The draft day trade lover in me smells a trade up into the top 5 cooking with this move.  Possibly as high as #2 overall to draft the highly coveted Mario Williams.  However in doing so that would take all of what's left of SF's 1st day picks.

This is a re-sign that 9er fans were waiting for big time!

49ers make the smart move in re-signing Adams (http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/mike-adams-49ers250406.php)
RealFootball365 (04/25/06)

What's interesting is that Adams was actually offered a qualifying one-year tender back in early March, but I guess the San Francisco 49ers felt that it would be a good idea to lock him up to an exclusive right contract. Not a bad idea for a guy that tallied 72 tackles and a sack in addition to his impressive interception total.

"Deep thoughts", though not by Jack Handy, [smiley=joker.gif] but courtesy of "The REAL Feed (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)", regarding Alex Smith's outlook for '06:

Smith should have plenty of options in '06 (http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/2006/07/alex-smith-49ers050706.html)
NFL News: RealFootball365.com (05.07.2006 06:05)
In 2005, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith struggled for a number of reasons. For one, Smith was a rookie, adjusting to a new offense and the speed of the NFL. Also, Smith lacked an offensive line that could provide him more than two seconds of protection. And then of course was the ...

I think this is a decent piece... with a creative intro segueing into the main content...  Well written and pretty good insight...  More substance and less Fanball-esque trash-talk writing...  Can't ask for much more.

8-) I been keeping my eye on this team.  Nolan has now listed E. Johnson as starter over V. Davis...That said he is also talking about three TE sets...not sure I've ever really heard much about this being done elsewhere...could be significant action for both Davis and Johnson if this come to fruition.

Anyone else out there keeping up with what's going on in the offensive scheme?  ?.?.?

Title: Re: 49ers Offseason Report
Post by Callie on Sep 2nd, 2006, 5:19pm
Whenever Nolan is asked who the starting TE is, he always says that he has two TE1's.  Also, in the preseason Vernon Davis has played with the first unit, and Eric Johnson has played with the second unit most of the time.  In other words, they were treating Davis as the starter.

Further, Eric Johnson is in a contract year, and the 9ers have so far made no effort to extend his contract.  And Nolan has previously made it clear that he believes that the best time to extend a contract is two years before the contract is up.

Johnson has been injury prone, and the 9ers now have Delaney Walker, who is a huge up-and-comer rookie.  Walker, like Johnson, is a converted WR.

Bajema is a stellar blocking TE, and while he has not proven to be a very good receiver so far, he will likely stick around for his ability to open up the run.  Nolan has already said that this year the 9ers plan to be 60% run.  Davis is obviously a very good receiving TE, and so are Walker and Johnson.
