Title: Chiefs Offseason Report
Post by Tony_O on Mar 14th, 2006, 12:30pm
Heres a team doing the right thing....

All-Pro Shields should retire a Chief with new dealAssociated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Right guard Will Shields, an 11-time All-Pro, has agreed to a four-year contract that will ensure his career ends with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 34-year-old Shields has started 207 games for the Chiefs, who drafted him in the third round out of Nebraska in 1993.

Shields contemplated retirement for over a year because of chronic back pain. The team had been working on a reworked deal that would make his contract more cap-friendly, but negotiations were slowed by uncertainty over the collective bargaining agreement.

Agent Joe Linta said the reworked deal would let Shields retire after this coming season without forcing him to pay back part of his bonus.

Shields is one of the Chiefs' most honored players and has been active in charitable affairs in the community. He also helped anchor an offensive line which has paved the way for one of the NFL's most productive offenses the past five seasons.

Shields was due a salary in 2006 of $5.1 million.

Chiefs pick intra-division rival's pocket to (attempt to) bolster their secondary...  From "The REAL Feed":

Chiefs sign Walls to one-year, $1.75M deal (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2393507&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
ESPN: NFL (01.04.2006 23:15)
It's been a tall order trying to fix the Chiefs secondary over the past two years, but the Chiefs made a big move Saturday by reaching a one-year, $1.75 million deal with former Denver Bronco Lenny Walls.

With the "addition" of Lenny, I think the Chiefs will be finding it rather "toasty" [smiley=warminup.gif] in their secondary... [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif]

The worst thing that can happen to an NFL general manager is a loss of nerve, which creates the inability to pull the trigger on personnel decisions. Seventeen years of chasing your tail in one place can certainly lead to personnel impotence. I'm starting to believe Carl Peterson is suffering fr...

The deal's done...  Kyle Turley is back,... but it appears he's given up on his attempt to come back as a tight-end, which he was doing when he originally was trying out for the Dolphins a couple months back.  From "The REAL Feed":

I think this indicates the team's legitimate concern about the negative effect this, coupled with the loss of their right tackle earlier this offseason, will have on their offense and, as concerns us fantasy footballers, Trent Green and Larry Johnson.  Make NO mistakes, boyz, this is NOT good news for Green and Johnson.  Make sure to jot that down in your notebooks!

By Joe Posnanski McClatchy Newspapers (MCT) RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Fantasy football is not my thing. People often ask: "What running back do you think I should take in the 12th round?" or "Who do you think will end up with more tackles, Lance Briggs or Gibril Wilson?" I know nothing about it.

But, anyway, I digress...  Shouldn't that title have read "and"!?!? :-/

Larry Johnson (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6363/news)
Yahoo Sports (08/20/06)
The Chiefs' offensive line, already besieged with questions since left tackle Willie Roaf's surprise retirement, suffered another recent setback with 11-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields nursing a high ankle sprain and wearing a protective boot, the Kansas City Star reports.

...keep in mind that high ankle sprains can linger.
