Steelers hang on to CB TownsendBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Steelers fought off the New England Patriots in order to keep cornerback Deshea Townsend.

Townsend agreed Friday to a four-year deal for $8 million that could be worth an additional $400,000 a year with incentives. Though the signing bonus numbers weren't available, Townsend will make $3 million in the first year of the contract.

The Patriots started talking about Townsend in the middle of the week, but the Steelers felt it was important to re-sign him. Though they are grooming Bryant McFadden to be a starting cornerback and they think he will be a good one, they didn't want to lose the reality of Townsend, and they wanted to keep him around until McFadden was ready and beyond.

The 30-year-old has been with the Steelers eight years. He was a fourth-round pick in 1998 and has been a starter for the past two-and-a-half seasons.

The Patriots had spots open in the secondary after the releases of cornerbacks Tyrone Poole and Duane Starks.

Haynes agrees to terms, will return to SteelersBy Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Unrestricted free agent tailback Verron Haynes, an unheralded but important component to the Pittsburgh Steelers' championship run in 2005, has agreed to return to the Super Bowl champions.

Haynes, 27, will sign a two-year, $1.6 million contract, team officials confirmed.

The four-year veteran spent the first two weeks of free agent sampling the unrestricted market. While there was some interest from other teams, his preference was to stay in Pittsburgh, and Steelers officials said at the outset of the free agency period they wanted him back.

The former Georgia standout has never started a game. In 53 appearances, he has just 660 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 159 attempts. Haynes also has 39 receptions for 322 yards and two touchdowns. But he is a player whose significance is not measured by the Steelers in numbers.

It's worth noting that when the Steelers deactivated Haynes for two games in the second half of last season and handed his third-down chores to Duce Staley, the Steelers lost both contests. Haynes was then returned to his third-down role and Pittsburgh won eight straight games, including Super Bowl XL.

A fifth-round choice in the 2002 draft, Haynes is a dependable receiver. More importantly, he has developed into an excellent blocker in pass protection. He is also a standout special teams performer.

In staying with the Steelers, the hard-working Haynes almost certainly will have the same role he has held down for the last two seasons.

Willie Parker, whose record 75-yard touchdown sprint on the second play of the second half helped propel the Steelers to their fifth Super Bowl title, will go to camp as the starter. Staley recently restructured his contract to stay with the Steelers and is projected as the replacement to the retired Jerome Bettis as the short-yardage and goal-line specialist, and change-of-pace tailback.

Either way, what an idiot.  He has been repeatedly warned to wear a helmet.  Many players have told him to give up riding  until after he retires.  I just don't get it.

The good news is that he is OK and will live.

Now on to a fantasy perspective, what the heck do the Steelers do for a QB if he is hurt and out for a while?   Holcomb or Losman?  Schaub?  Jeff Garcia from Eagles?  or heaven forbid, stay with Batch?  Maybe either Pennington or Ramsey since they have Clemmons now?

Roethlisberger out of bed, could go home as early as Thursday (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-roethlisbergeraccident&prov=ap&type=lgns)
Yahoo Sports (06/14/06)

Because Roethlisberger's multiple facial fractures, broken nose and broken upper and lower jaw are being held in place by screws and 2-inch titanium plates, he can eat soft foods -- and not be restricted to liquids -- during an estimated six to eight week recovery period.

"We take a titanium plate, bend it and adapt it to the contours of the facial bones and then secure it in place with screws," surgeon Daniel Pituch said. "This kind of state-of-the-art technology allowed us to successfully treat Mr. Roethlisberger's facial fractures."

As a result, the 240-pound Roethlisberger probably won't lose as much weight as he would have on an all-liquid diet. The Steelers have not given a timetable for his return, but they are optimistic he will be ready for their Sept. 7 opener against Miami.

Who would know that anyway? Roeslisburger barley says anything about anything. Do you think he came out and said "Hey guys guess what, Holmes didnt call me back. Could you print that please." Give me a break.

       Or maybe

The government is tapping phones trying to keep an eye on that terrorist Santonio Holmes and is suprised that he has not called Ben yet. Give me a break.
