The Eagles were 4-2 last season before losing TO (to suspension) and then McNabb (to injury).  They're only one year removed from a Super Bowl appearance (and suffered the seemingly unavoidable let-down the following year).

You say the rest of the division improved (and they did - for the most part).  The Giants improved their secondary in FA, but still have no interior D-line.  Their O-line is the same as last year and Eli Manning is still Eli Manning.  The Skins have a ton of WRs now, but it's still an old Mark Brunell or an inexperienced Jason Campbell throwing to them.  Dallas really did a lot in free agency, but had an average draft and still have OL questions (and a statue of a QB).  It also remains to be seen what kind of impact TO will have on the chemistry of the team.  You seemed to overlook the fact that the Eagles upgraded in the off-season too.  They lost next to nothing (other than TO, who wasn't going to help the team anyway) and had some important acquisitions.

First off, McNabb is 100% healthy again and isn't carrying the excess bulk that has slowed him down in the past.  The Eagles lost TO, but they have proven that they can have offensive success without a #1 WR.  They made it to NFC Championship games with Todd Pinkston and James Thrash for years.  Now they have Reggie Brown (promising rookie season) and Jabar Gaffney (probably a better player than he was able to show with Houston).  They lost ND Kalu and replaced him with Darren Howard (big upgrade!).  They lost Keith Adams (admittedly hurts special teams coverage) and replaced him with Shawn Barber (big upgrade defensively if he can stay healthy).  They lost Mike McMahon and replaced him with Jeff Garcia (another upgrade).  The Eagles also had one of the best drafts of any team this past April.

So I think you're being a bit hasty in your criticism of an analyst saying the Eagles are #9 in his power rankings.  There's no reason to believe that the Eagles 2005 season was anything but an aberration.

Well...now, you have no TO. I don't think you have good enough receivers to make it back to the SB. The fact that you have three other teams in your division that are just as tough this year if not tougher does not bode well for Philadelphia. Philly's time has come...and gone. #9 is too high, period.

WTF  does that mean? Eli is still Eli? Eli put up some very good numbers last year. Granted, he did fade down the stretch when it counted most, but now he has another full year experience under his belt, plus a new weapon in Moss. I think Manning's stats will be better the McNabbs at season's end, I can tell you that. Eli breaks out this year.  [smiley=yes.gif]

We don't have good receivers, but they are better than they were pre-Owens. Brian Westbrook is their best receiver and they use him in that role a lot and they also rely a lot on their TEs so I'm not overly concerned about their WR corps.  Sure, I'd like better, but I'm OK with them.

Faded down the stretch?  I guess that's one way to put it.  In December and January he threw 4 TDs and 10 INTs.  He managed just over 200 passing yards a game. He completed less than 54% of his passes and had a QB rating of about 60.  That's one ugly fade.  In fact, he only had 3 or 4 real solid games throughout the whole season (and all but one--a loss to Seattle--were against poor defenses.  Should I even mention the Minnesota game?  So, yes, Eli is still Eli in my mind. He has a new weapon, but we know how effective those rookie WRs are... especially those who didn't put up stellar numbers at the college level. And he does have another year of experience (most of it was a bad experience, but hopefully he learned from it). As for Manning vs. McNabb? If McNabb makes it through the whole season his numbers will be well ahead of Eli's in every category except INTs.  Eli still throws more of those than Donovan.

I think there are enough other Eagles and Giants fans here who would make such a thread one of EPIC proportions here on "the Gridiron".  It could go on FOREVER, and it could get nasty (but in a good "rivalry" type way).  I'm not going to start it for yous,... and I don't care if yous continue your "debate" here...  But, if one of yous wants to take the bull by the horns and get a "Giants-versus-Eagles Anger 'Management'" thread going,... Wow...  I've got to append this to the post immediately above.  Get a load of these two quotes from the Clayton piece and the FOXSports piece, respectively, regarding "Dayne versus Bell":

Clayton of ESPN writes:
"The most wide-open battle at running back is in the Mile High City.  Mike Shanahan is making Tatum Bell earn the starting job.  Remember, the Broncos traded away Clinton Portis and drafted Bell as the back of the future.  The future is now for Bell, who has impressive breakaway speed but needs to improve on his short-yardage and goal-line efforts.  Bell competes directly against Ron Dayne but indirectly against air."

FOXSports writes:
"Dayne gets the first crack at the starting tailback job, which has produced plenty of 1,000-yard rushers. The Broncos think Dayne fits the offense perfectly. Dayne ran in a similar zone-blocking system in college at Wisconsin, and he was Division I-A's all-time leading rusher and a Heisman Trophy winner. Dayne is big but has nimble feet. He can spot the hole, make one cut and get momentum downfield. The Broncos like that in their backs. Tatum Bell is talented but the Broncos have always been reluctant to give him too much responsibility. He needs to work on the little aspects of his game like receiving and blocking before he is the every-down back. But Bell gives Denver a shot at a big play every time he touches the ball because of his tremendous speed."
