Title: Toughest Year In Recent Memory!?!?
Post by StegRock on Jul 30th, 2006, 1:59am
This has been my "feeling" heretofore this offseason, but over the last couple days I've been working on my rankings, and it's been firmly confirmed...  This is one of the roughest offseasons in recent years, and this is my 18th, to get a bead on the how players should be ranked/valued (at least at QB, RB and WR).  I guess it's all the key offseason moves, the rookie class and the teams they respectively went to, the coaching changes, injuries, the glut at running back, etc., etc.  Has anybody else found it particularly difficult this year coming up with rankings you are comfortable with?  ...  After MUCH thought I have come up with some decent rankings, I think.  So, secondarily, just out of curiosity, would anybody be interested in having access to them?

This has been an interesting off season, with the draft and player movement.

And sure, I'll take a look at your rankings. :)

I respect your knowledge of fantasy football and would be thrilled to see the rankings.....even if you think my team sucks.

I agree that this year is much tougher to rank guys after the top 5-7 players at each position. There were sooooo many injuries last year to formerly or (soon to be elite) players to start with...Mcnabb, Ahman Green, Duece, Daunte, Fred Taylor, Palmer, Braylon Edwards...just to name a few, then the T.O thing, Edge, Daunte...again, Bettis retiring, Jimmy Smith-same.

My list is like most, after the top guys, more on hope/crystal ball, than substance and past history. The f/a moves were great for teams, but it makes it much harder for us.

I'm still going through, team by team, and making my projections. I project total yards, scoring, etc. for each player (fantasy relevant) on every team independently. Then those independent evaluations are converted into a fantasy cheatsheet. I find this way is more efficient and lends itself to less personal bias (at least a little bit less) then just making a list of the top 25 QBs, etc.

It does seem a bit more difficult in getting a read on who is going to be starting for each team -- more so than in past years.

Are these people readin' my stuff or what?  Or, maybe it's just that I have my finger pretty darn well on the pulse of the hobby... [smiley=whistle.gif] From "The REAL Feed":

Well,... it's time to let the cat out of the bag...

...

I came to three hard realizations this offseason.  One, that to really take this venture to the next level and get this thing moving toward the company I envision, the magazine and the unique distribution idea I have for it NEEDS to get off the ground.  Two, there is NO way I'm going to be making 100+ cold calls to companies for funding any spring soon, in terms of time, effort that could go for naught, and money.  I didn't realize how much of a Superman effort it was going to take.  And, in any event, it's just an inefficient way to go about it.  It will ONLY take us about $1,500 to $2,000 bucks (over and above overhead costs and what I would call a fair amount of "breathing room" for me, which I value at around $1,000) to make this thing happen the first year, according to my plan that is.  THEN, once we have a quality product in hand, contacting companies for sponsorship will be a MUCH smoother road.

Regarding generating revenue, I was inspired by the TWO-WEEK run of donations we had, but,... the third realization,... donations and my pitching the "CO-OP" mindset are just not going to get us there anytime soon (that does NOT mean I am abandoning the "cooperative" idea in the long-run; it just needs to be augmented if we want to get to the "promised land" before we are all VERY long in the tooth).  And, while spending hours running this FREE (and virtually ad-FREE (and, guys, only a couple of you know, I HAVE turned down NUMEROUS gambling sites, who have been bangin' on my door over the last year, including ones who are willing to just pay a flat rate; but, it's against my principles and it's not how I want to "make it" or my money; I don't want you all's losses to be even a small part of my gains, not after what so many of you have done for me and this site)) forum, running free leagues, doing Broncos reports, producing 9,750+ Steggie-style looooong-winded posts, conducting insightful and deep arguments (and not just about fantasy football), and,... well,... writing pages of CBFL analysis, for God's sake, is all well and good, we're at the point where it ain't gettin' the job done.

So, out of this, and after a second year of competing with the "experts" in JYJ's draft just fine, is born StegsList.com (http://www.stegslist.com)!  You will see that this is a typical Steggie-style effort.  It's about fantasy football fun, for sure,... but it's about "more".  I have structured this so that there is even OPPORTUNITY for YOU guys.  You'll be seeing it all soon,... in about an hour I'd say, around which time I will be making another important post...

Over and Audi,... for now,
Steg [smiley=builder.gif]
