I've become less and less enchanted with the SI.com writers. This one explained that Dayne might be valuable in short yardage situations...? I guess he's never seen him play. He's anything BUT a short-yardage back.

In all fairness to CNN/SI, this is what a lot of sources are (I agree with you) ERRONEOUSLY reporting... [smiley=no.gif] They just don't seem to get it... He's more likely to become their go-to tailback than their short-yardage "big" back. Furthermore, this is Denver "south" with Kubiak, who knows Dayne's strengths and weaknesses, at the helm.

[offtopic]Talk about unprofessionalism... How about the following, the second sentence of an article titled "Texans ink Ron Dayne" up at HoustonTexans.com???

The Texans added depth and expierience Sunday to a Houston backfield that needed both. After cutting rookie running back Chris Taylor earlier in the day, Houston inked six-year veteran Ron Dayne to compliment rookie Wali Lundy and second-year veteran Vernand Morency.

It's good that they brought him in to "compliment" the two kids and make sure they feel good about themselves, and not to "complement" them. [smiley=no.gif][/offtopic]

I wouldn't accept this kind of quality either with respect to content or English in my thread posts! :-/

It's seeming more and more as though Dayne's turf toe is pretty bad. I still think Kubiak has "plans" for Dayne, but until that toe is healed up, which, it's looking like, may not be this season, those "plans" will be on hold, and like anything in the NFL if someone else steps up, those "plans" will change. Gado is intriguing.

Believe it or not, Kubiak might actually be protecting Dayne this week, in all honesty. Their run game is going to get hammered, perhaps worse than last week, by Jacksonville this week. Showing that NO one can get the job done against such teams behind their current o-line will go a long way to shutting up all the haters who probably want Ron's head on a platter. They play Tennessee next week. If my theory is even just partially true, I see Ron's being activated next week after taking a week off and watching his fellows take the brunt of the blows for a week.

Here are Gado's stats on the season...
16 rushes for 43 yards for a 2.7 average per rush and 0 touchdowns (note 2 for -7 of that was with the Packers)

Here are Dayne's stats on the season...
57 rushes for 167 yards for a 2.9 average per rush and 0 touchdowns

And, Dayne has put up the only basically legit rushing game of the season for the Texans...

Granted, Gado hasn't had a chance to be "the" guy and rack up the carries. BUT, a) Dayne really hasn't either; he's only had the one game with 22 carries, and b) I don't think that would necessarily have "improved" the yields... or will.

Look, I too like Gado... and Dayne as we all know all too well. But, I really believe that Dayne is the deep-down favorite of the one person who matters the most, head coach Gary Kubiak. That said, it seems like it doesn't matter who runs the ball down in Houston right now, he's in trouble.

Well, it looks like the Texans finally got their second legit RB performance of the season, and this one was "really" legit, Wali Lundy's 19 rushes for 93 yards and a touchdown. He also had 4 catches for 15 yards. Very good work! Not quite sure if the smallish Lundy is what Kubiak wants, but production is production. As far as the guy who is the main challenger to Dayne in terms of style of play and stature, Samkon Gado laid an... [smiley=egghead.gif] to the tune of 10 rushes for 27 yards to go with 3 catches for 15 yards. As per my post right above, Gado was right... [smiley=bullseye.gif] in terms of his yards-per-rush on the season. It was 2.7 going in. It was 2.7 yesterday. I think in Tennessee it will be Lundy and Dayne, probably splitting the carries 65-35. We'll see, though.

All I'm trying to get at here is that I think I've been painting, with not a few swipes at my brush while doing so, a fairly accurate picture of this situation and, for that matter, Dayne's history in the league generally speaking all along. I think that quote of Gary Kubiak in bold (and italics) above (perhaps coupled with the "Kubiak enthralled with Dayne" link) is about as much of a precise restatement of the position I was forwarding as one could expect.
