Title: Eagles Offseason Report
Post by Philly on Feb 26th, 2007, 12:46pm
A.J. Feeley signed a 3-year contract extension that takes him through the 2010 season. The Eagles really like Feeley and believe that he runs their offense well (as evidenced by his success in limited opportunities thus far).

This also ensures that Jeff Garcia will be heading to market to test out his prospects. If Garcia is unable to secure a starting position, then it will come down to how much money he can get as a #2. The situation in Philadelphia is ideal for him (McNabb possibly not able to start the season, and his recent injury history) and he'd definitely come back to Philadelphia if the money is close. However I don't think the Eagles would offer anything more than a one-year contract and at the veteran minimum with some bonus clauses.

IF McNabb can not start the season, do you think the Eagles plan on going with Feeley as the starter?

While the Eagles may be confident in that, I know as a fan I am going to be nervous as heck......

Also, Philly, do you know if any progress has been made in re-signing Buckhalter?  Are they going to just let him test the waters or is it there intent to keep in an Eagles uniform?

I think the Eagles are OK with Feeley as an interim starter if McNabb isn't ready to go. After all, he [i]has[/] had some success with the Eagles, albeit in a very limited role. Since they extended him, look for the Eagles to get a veteran (at the minimum) through FA as a #3. Conversely, and more likely, they'll add the #3 guy through the draft (later rounds).

As for Correll Buckhalter, there's no indication coming from the team that he'll be re-signed. I think they've run their course with him and, last season withstanding, he just can't stay healthy enough to be counted on. This draft has a number of very intriguing big backs including some real value guys on the second day. I'd expect them to go this direction.

The Eagles re-signed a couple of their free agents as the FA season opened. Back-up safety Quintin Mikell is solid as a backup for the Eagles, although he has no fantasy value. Defensive end, Juqua Thomas, is part of the DE rotation and was one of the few players who was really contributing from the line at the end of the season. This was a great move by the Eagles, although Thomas is nothing more than a bye-week fill-in type of guy for your IDPers out there.

The Eagles have been, as expected, very quiet about their intentions in free agency. The fact is that they have very little cap room to play with. They signed a number of young players (Mike Patterson, Trent Cole, Reggie Brown, etc.) to contract extensions during the 2006 season which left them in a bit of a bind with the salary cap this year. Look for a couple signings for depth, but nothing earth-shattering.

Interestingly, the story was leaked to the media, which is a punishable offense if the leak is determined. The beat writer (Bob Brookover of the Inky) was interviewed this morning and said, flat out, that it was NOT anyone in the Eagles organization that shared the information with him, although he won't tell who it was.

Also, once the story was broken, no one from Stallworth's camp (his agent is Drew Rosenhaus) refuted it. The thing that we have to remember, too, is that there are many things that can lead to a player being placed in the NFL's Substance Abuse program, including a failed test because of too much water in the player's system.

It is intriguing that there are now stories of the Eagles putting an offer on the table for Stallworth and several other teams beginning to sniff around as well. Stallworth was a model citizen for the Eagles last year (despite rumors that he was disruptive in New Orleans). The most troubling thing with Stallworth, in my opinion, is the fact that his hamstrings are strung so tight. Regardless, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him re-signed by the Eagles.

Johnson is a speedy wideout who has good return skills.....

Eagles sign WR Bethel Johnson

Posted: March 8, 2007

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Wide receiver and kick returner Bethel Johnson reached agreement on a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

In his career, Johnson has returned 147 kickoffs for 3,611 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 39 catches for 606 yards and four touchdowns.

Johnson, 28, was a second-round draft choice of New England in 2003. He was traded to New Orleans last year but released before the 2006 season and signed with the Minnesota Vikings in October.

Eagles sign LB Ryan Fowler to an offer sheet. Fowler is a big, physical LB who could push for Dhani Jones' SLB position or a backup position at MLB behind Trotter. The Cowboys have a week to match the Eagles offer, yet would not receive any compensation were they to lose him because Fowler went undrafted out of college.

In typical Eagles fashion, not long after the Eagles announced they had an offer sheet with Fowler, the Titans upped the ante and the Eagles are out of the picture. C'est la vie. At least we got Bethel Johnson - we needed a #6 receiver anyway. (And what does that say about the progress of Jeremy Bloom?)

Finally....

The Eagles sign WR Kevin Curtis to a six-year deal.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AicWBPquszQNSKigHdg5sEM5nYcB?slug=jc-curtis031507&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

He'll compete for the #1 WR role with Reggie Brown. I like that the Eagles did something, but signing a career #3 WR to that big a deal while neglecting their real problems (defense) doesn't excite me too much.

Philly, what do you think the Eagles have in mind for the draft at D?

It's my understanding that this is a very good draft for defensive positions.

Eagles Resign Buckhalter

Unable to sign Ron Dayne, the Eagles manage to resign Buckhalter:

I think they'll look to the defensive secondary in the first round (CB or S). They'll also have to consider adding some linebacking help. Trotter is slowing down quickly, Dhani Jones is wasted space on the field, Chris Gocong has never played an NFL down (and is playing a new position), Matt McCoy is still small, and Shawn Barber is likely gone. Another deep area in the draft is DE. The Eagles have Kearse (injuries), Cole (not an every down player), Thomas (nice pass rusher, but not much against the run), and Howard (disappearing act in 2006).

Ideally, I'd like to see them go:

1-CB (Chris Houston, Marcus McCauley, Aaron Ross)
2-LB (Jon Beason, David Harris)
3-FS (Sabby Piscitelli, Josh Gattis, Will Gulley)
4-no pick (Stallworth)
5-RB (Nate Ilaoa, Dwayne Wright, Jon Cornish)
6-SS (Chad Nkang, Daren Stone, Melvin Bullitt)
7-OT (Robert Kraay, Jason Capizzi, Jermon Bushrod)

The Buffalo Bills traded former Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb to the Philadelphia Eagles for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a 2008 late-round pick.

Nice move by the Eagles. Spikes is certainly on the downside of his career (which makes the signing a bit of a head-scratcher [smiley=uh.gif]), but he's able to play any of the 4-3 LB positions, meaning he can spell Trotter when needed, he can replace Dhani Jones if Chris Gocong isn't able to, and he could take over for Matt McCoy and allow Omar Gaither to move back to the middle.

The signing of Holcomb gives the Eagles 3 experienced QBs on their roster -- leading me to believe that McNabb might not be progressing as quickly as expected.

The Eagles have signed their QB of the future and their surprise first pick in this years draft Kevin Kolb. (note: Kolb was a second round draft choice since the Eagles traded away their 1st rounder)

Smart move to get him in to camp.  I sure this deal was made easier by the Dolphins signing 2nd round selection QB John Beck yesterday.

Eagles have poor showing in 29-3 preseason opener and lose some depth in the process.

Eagles lose more than a game (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/recap;_ylt=AsQ4fsVyyUSk5FmJJvLHoYdDubYF?gid=20070813033&prov=ap)
Yahoo! Sports (8/13/2007 11:22 PM)

The Eagles backup RB Ryan Moats broke an ankle and is likely done for the season. I don't see this as a big issue as I didn't think he was going to make the team anyway. Look for the Eagles to help him rehab and then waive him as soon as he's cleared medically.

Also hurt in the game were DE Jerome McDougle (strained triceps) and DT LeJuan Ramsey (high ankle sprain). Both of those players were battling for roster spots on a deep defensive line.

DEVASTATING NEWS!!!!

The Eagles All-Pro Offensive guard may be out for the season (if not longer).  The inuendos are there from Andrews himself in the quotes.  As an Eagles fan, I am crushed.  This is REALLY bad news.

From a fantasy perspective, Westbrook owners and McNabb owners have reason to be concerned.

I don't know...  Andrews sounds pretty tongue-in-cheek in that report...  I wish him the best if he's serious,... but I will more so applaud him if he's screwing with the media... and us.  In any event, all I could dig up on this myself, aside from the article DD is referencing, was this blog report:

OK... I heard an interview with Andy Reid on WIP Sports Radio this morning. The host (Angelo Cataldi) asked Reid about Shawn Andrews's status in light of his recent comments (from the Courier Post story above). Reid said that there were no career-ending issues and that the ankle continues to progress nicely and Andrews is improving. He didn't sound worried about his long-term prognosis at all. When asked about the "tear-jerker" comments by Andrews, Reid said that Andrews was just concerned because his sprained ankle is the same one that was surgically repaired a couple years ago.

I don't get the feeling that there's any long-term issue here.

This would be good.  I had heard on the radio that the Eagles lost 3 players for the season.  Moats, McDougle, and Andrews.   I started looking on the net and could only found that article about what Andrews said.  I did not know he was a practical joker.  And reading the comments based on what I heard on the radio, I was concerned as an Eagles fan!!
