The specific situation regarding Clinton Portis and his sore knee is sliding under the radar...  Here's what I turned up digging [smiley=shovel.gif] through the LOCAL sources available on "the Gridiron Newsstand (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/newsstand.htm)":

Portis is damaged goods right now, and with Betts lurking in the wings, waiting out his next opportunity to SHINE, this is NOT a situation to be ignorant of!  Portis is not a "given" this season...

Portis has tendonitis.  It is not a torn ACL, seperated shoulder, or broken leg.  They are just being EXTREMELY cautious with him.  He is practicing again and already starting to do cutting drills.

Remember what happened to him last preseason.  He made a hell of a tackle and wham....out for a good portion of the season.  

(Besides, Ladell Betts is injured too.  He is dealing with a neck stinger.  )

Bottom line.....this is not a major injury and since it is preseason he is taking it easy.

Here is a quote from Gibbs in the Washington Post following the scrimmage against the Ravens last Saturday,

BALTIMORE, Aug. 4 -- Coach Joe Gibbs said that a recent MRI exam of tailback Clinton Portis's right knee showed only the previously diagnosed tendinitis, and that he could have played Saturday had the Redskins been involved in a regular season game. Portis will continue to focus on strengthening and conditioning his knee this week -- there is no set timetable for his return to full practice -- but Gibbs said he feels good about Portis's progress.

"I have every confidence that had that been a game today, he would have played," Gibbs said after the scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. "And I think he feels that way. But at the same time if there's a chance for us to get that calmed down, we're going to do that."

That's optimistic coach-speak...  Tendinitis in his KNEE...  I, rightly or wrongly, am having visions of Domanick Davis last offseason. [smiley=scared.gif] In any event, though, I'm just telling fantasy footballers, "Buyer beware!"  This is a KNEE we're talking about.  This IS a "situation" that merits attention.  He needs to be acquired, i.e. drafted or traded for, with the "whole picture" in view.  To acquire him without knowing about this situation would be foolish (and make for potentially bad feelings between "friends").  At the end of the day, you can weigh the evidence [smiley=options.gif] for yourself and draw your own conclusions.  Bottom line, if you are being offered Portis in what looks to be a deal that is too good to be true,... it probably is, and the "whole" story as stated above is probably not being disclosed to you by the fella trying to trade Portis to you.

There is nothing to disclose.  This is not a major injury.....  Hell, you could go on and on this time of year with injuries to players that are not playing.  It is friggin preseason and means nothing.  (thus why the starters only play 3 plays)  

You are acting like you made a major discovery.  This news regarding the tendonitis is no secret.  Google Portis's name and you will see articles about it.  If the injury were serious, do you think that Portis would continue to be taken in the second round of almost every fantasy draft?  Do you think he would continue to be listed as the 12th-16th RB in almost every preseason ranking?  Even ESPN and Sportsline acknowledge the injury yet continue to keep him ranked that high.

Read the quote from Gibbs....  "He would play if this were a regular season game."  

So yes, to your point, you do need to be aware of any injuries.  But on the same token, you need to put it in perspective of the preseason.

[offtopic]In case you haven't figured it out by now, I am the one that made the Portis offer.   I did not think the deal was "too good to be true".  It benefitted both of us by allowing me to get essentially 2 quality WR and allowed you a good running back.  

And Steg is correct, it is critical you do your research before making any deal, less you end up with a QB who is not even guaranteed to start.   ;)[/offtopic]

Redskins: Portis is 'on the right track'  
Clinton Portis - RB - WAS - Aug. 12 - 10:08 am et  
Dr. James Andrews and the Redskins medical staff say Clinton Portis (knee) "is on the right track ... to where (the swelling) will calm down and go away."

Who are you trying to convince here, bradda?  Us or yourself???  Bottom line, "Buyer beware" has to rule the day here if one is going to be a savvy fantasy footballer about this.  I mean what you quote above sounds eerily similar to the "optimistic" diagnoses the doctors were giving Domanick Davis last year this time ("oh, it's nothing").  To be honest, that report is a bunch of general yadda-yadda that could be spun in either direction.  There's nothing to really sink your teeth into there and assess.

Bottom line, the guy's young, and I don't think his career is in jeopardy here.  Tendinitus needs time, though, and his '07 campaign does stand to possibly be compromised, and there is more to the picture than just this sore knee of his.  There's the perception, and I think a correct one, that Portis is not a "Gibb's guy".  Then, there is Ladell Betts waiting in the wings who looked awesome last year when he got in and does seem to fit Gibbs's system better, i.e. be cut in the Ernest Byner mold and run the Ernest Byner way.  And, whether or not Betts is dinged up in any significant way as you made it a point to claim above, he did play yesterday.

I just wonder, in any event,... if you'd be making these posts if you didn't have him in the GBRFL (and weren't in a position to try to be trading him).  I mean I may not be, either, BUT I definitely would have made that first post yesterday had I known.  The board "the Red Zone" is for giving sound, unbiased advice to the general fantasy footballer dropping by "the Gridiron", not for the exposition of GBRFL modus operandi.

OK I'm confused... tendentious and tendonitis look too similar to be used repeatedly in those posts.  [smiley=stars.gif]


For what it's worth, in my money league (a 12-team redraft league with experienced owners -- I would have said savvy owners, but a couple of them don't fit the definition) Portis lasted until pick 4.12. I wasn't willing to take a chance on him even that early -- partially because of injuries (past and present... and future?) and also because of character. His dogfighting comments rubbed me the wrong way and it wouldn't surprise me to see him making poor decisions about his own actions.

All that being said, since I own Ladell Betts in the GBRFL2, I'd be more than happy if the Portis owner wanted to give him to me so I could handcuff him with Betts. ;)

I bet that owner would trade him for Adrian Peterson and whatever else you needed to make the deal.  You should ask him!   ;D

I'm not sure how much work Adrian Peterson is going to get behind Cedric Benson this year, but I'll be happy to pick him up as a FA and trade him straight up for Portis.   ;)
