Title: Raiders In-season Report
Post by Callie on Sep 7th, 2007, 8:33pm
Raiders, Russell could be near deal
SOURCE: QB EXPECTS TO SIGN BY SATURDAY

http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_6825110

If Russell doesn't sign in time, he won't get paid for Week 1.

Also:

Russell stands to lose one-seventeenth of whatever his salary would be for each week he misses once the season begins.

The Raiders are obligated to pay Daunte Culpepper $3.2 million if he is on the roster as of Saturday night. They owe Culpepper only $750,000 if he is released before then.

The $3.2 million isn't a lot to pay a starting quarterback, if that were Culpepper's role. However, it's a huge salary for someone who failed to beat out journeyman Josh McCown and now is a backup. Also, the $2.45 million net savings could be used to bridge the gap between what Russell is seeking in guaranteed money and what the Raiders are offering.

Culpepper owners should watch this one.

McCown's status for this week uncertain... according to "The REAL Feed":

The Oakland Raiders once again aren't saying who their starting quarterback will be. This time the issue is Josh McCown's health, not an attempt at a competitive advantage.

McCown could really be down... and OUT this time...  He was today...  From "The REAL Feed":

I got this game here...  This didn't look good. :-/

I didn't get the game, but I was watching on TVU.  It looked awful.  The Raiders have a bye in Week 5, so not hearing anything yet may be good news.  Two weeks off and treatment may be enough to do the trick.

This could be a re-aggrevation of his same old back problems, though.  At the very least, Jordan may come back in more of an RBBC than expected.  Rhodes will be back in Week 5, Fargas showed that he can run very well in the new blocking scheme and with the improved O-line, and the Raiders may keep some of the load off Jordan to avoid further injury problems for him.

Hey Callie... In my money league I own Jordan (via trade) and Dominic Rhodes (via draft, with an eye for the middle to end of the season).

For Week 6, who do you see getting the opportunity? Should I grab Fargas? I have other needs too, so I kinda need to make this week's FA acquisitions count.

I know you asked Callie, but IMHO I feel that Rhodes and Fargas will split the load, with Rhodes getting a majority of the touches.

Fargas is fast, but he just can't take a hit.  Kiffin took him out of the game after a "so called" big hit.  Which would be any normal tackle for a descent sized RB.  Fargas had a good game, yes.  BUT, he just isn't built to be a feature back for any length of time.  After the bye, if Jordan is still out, Rhodes will be getting the nod with Fargas as the change-of-pace.

Look at this article:

Logjam exists in backfield
X-rays on Jordan are negative; Rhodes will be back after suspension

Contra Costa Times
Contra Costa Times
Article Launched:10/02/2007 03:02:59 AM PDT

ALAMEDA -- The X-rays taken on running back LaMont Jordan's injured back after Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins were negative, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Monday.
That bodes well for Jordan and his potential return for Oakland's next game, Oct. 14 against the San Diego Chargers. However, the Raiders have the luxury of not rushing back Jordan too soon.

That much became evident when backup running back Justin Fargas rushed for 172 of his 179 yards after Jordan sustained his back injury on Sunday. Also, Dominic Rhodes' four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy ended Sunday.

"Our plan all along was to have (several) guys carrying the ball, not just one guy carrying the ball all the time," Kiffin said at his weekly news conference Monday. "Fargas stepped up and played great, exactly what we talked about, the next guy stepping up when somebody goes down.

"And now we'll add Dominic this week to the competition and let it play out. In two weeks, we get a chance to take a look at Michael Bush. So, it's a pretty good situation to be in. Someone may call it a problem. I don't see it as a problem at all."

Michael Bush? That's right, the player the Raiders selected with the first pick of the fourth round of the NFL draft in April. He has yet to participate in a full-squad practice while he rehabilitates from a broken right leg he sustained more than a year ago in college.

http://www.contracostatimes.com/raiders/ci_7060832?nclick_check=1

The Raiders have said so far that they don't see either Rhodes or Fargas able to carry the whole load, but so far - for a long time - Fargas has been fill-in-backup or worse for fantasy.  His nice game was against Miami, BTW.

If Jordan has more problems than expected though (and he has a way of looking strong and then getting hurt), Rhodes should get most of the action in my opinion.  Back-up on your roster for a wait-and-see.  I'd be dicey about using Jordan as a depend-upon starter in a 2 or 3 RB fantasy league down the road.

Culpepper to start Week 6, Jordan a question mark, Burgess should be back.

http://www.mercurynews.com/collegesports/ci_7124861

Two things to watch - what will happen at RB, and the fact that just one season later and coaching changes, same players, has the Raider O-line playing well.   Also watch what happens at QB, since Kiff won't say what will happen after McCown gets healthy.  No guarantees.  Feels like Arizona.....

Raider RBs.  Be careful here:

LaMont Jordan didn't want to get too specific, but he said enough Thursday that it's clear his back problems won't be going away any time soon.

"This is something that I've been dealing with, but this is the worst it's been in years," Jordan told reporters in the locker room following practice. "I really can't remember it feeling that bad as it did in the Miami game, but it's getting better . . . it's just a matter of how things go (Friday) and if the coaches feel comfortable with me getting out there."

Jordan and Burgess doubtful Week 6:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-raidersinjuries&prov=ap&type=lgns

Also, the Raiders re-signed Cooper for special teams - much needed help there.  Cooper burned off his 'roids suspension while away, but he won't play this week.

I'd stay away from LaMont this week.  It's likely that Rhodes and Fargas will do most of the work.

Another casuality of sorts of Maurice Clarett...  Williams apparently just lost it during that year he lost. :-/

I expect the Raiders to protect their investment and hold back Russell until the O-line is ready.  Why throw a rookie into that mess?  This isn't about one season.

If Russell plays this year, it means that he only needs a little humbling and some field experience.  His development will be organized.  They saw what happens when a stud like that gets hurt when they lost Bo Jackson.

JaMarcus Russell debut on Sunday?

No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell could make his NFL debut Sunday, not by climbing the depth chart so much as climbing over a pile of injured quarterbacks.

Raiders quarterback Daunte Culpepper was limited in practice Thursday by a thigh injury. He said it was precautionary move, and there's no telling yet if he'll be able to start Sunday against the visiting Broncos.

His backup, former starter Josh McCown, showed up on the locker room with his left hand wrapped in ice. He dislocated two joints in his left pinkie during practice Wednesday.

If Culpepper and McCown can't go, Russell would be next in line for starting duty, though Andrew Walter remains an outside possibility. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin declined to speculate, saying the Raiders have one more day of practice to see how everyone feels.

In the least, Russell could move into the No. 2 position -- the next step in his progression toward playing, Kiffin has said.

If Russell does play Sunday, it will be in front a full house at The Coliseum. Team officials confirmed the game has sold out and will be televised locally.

Watch what happens, but don't expect to know any answers before Sunday.

Another interesting week full of intrigue, this time in the Tundra:

http://www.ibabuzz.com/raidersblog/2007/12/05/tundra-talk/

JaMarcus Russell said he has never played a game in severe weather either in high school or at LSU.

If Culpepper is inactive, don't rule out the possibility of Andrew Walter backing up McCown. Walter stayed after practice and was throwing extra passes Wednesday, something he has rarely done in recent weeks since being buried at No. 4 on the depth chart.
