Title: Panthers In-season Report
Post by StegRock on Sep 23rd, 2007, 8:02pm
Delhomme leaves today's game with freak throwing arm injury... according to "The REAL Feed":

Carolina QB Jake Delhomme hurts arm throwing pass (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/09/23/2020.ap.fbn.panthers.delhomme.injured.0132/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (23.09.2007 19:10)

Carr looked great in limited action.  This could be his BIG shot behind a real o-line.  He should now be front and center on your radar... [smiley=radar.gif] If Delhomme's injury is at all extensive, this is an injury to the elbow of his THROWING ARM,... Carr will start flying up the value rankings. [smiley=yes.gif]

Update on Delhomme... from "The REAL Feed":

Delhomme won't need surgery on injured elbow (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3034246&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
ESPN: NFL (24.09.2007 13:52)
Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme will not need surgery on his injured right elbow and will be day-to-day leading up to Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

But, "official" status aside, how long can an NFL quarterback really go with a hurt elbow to his throwing arm?  To me, he hasn't looked that great so far, and it is just a matter of time before Carr takes over,... especially now.

Yikes... talk about lofty expectations. He's been great, fantasy-wise, so far this season. He's got 8 TDs and only 1 INT. He's got a 111 QB rating, which is darn good. Only 2 QBs have thrown for more TDs (Tom Brady and Carson Palmer). I'm not sure why there would be a rush to get David Carr in there, unless the injury really limits Delhomme's capabilities.

Yes, at the end of the day, numbers are numbers and that is what drives fantasy football.  But, I contend that his numbers or, at least, play this season is deceiving...  First off, the Panthers have played 2 O-and-3 teams with poor pass defenses, one of whom has a poor defense overall.  Week 1 he had a legitimately good game, though not great yardage-wise, but he didn't need to to win that one.  Then, the next game, a home loss to the mighty Texans, he threw two early TD strikes, but his yardage numbers were modest, and he SLUMPED BIG time in the middle of the game, which I think was largely what cost them the game.  All of his numbers were accrued (somewhat like the great Joey Harrington this past week against the Panthers) in chuck-it-up, desperation comeback mode.  Then, there is this past week against the mighty Falcons, a game in which he, at one point, was 6 for 12 for like 80-some yards before going out in the second half of the third quarter with a stat line of 10 for 18 for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Yes, he didn't get the full game in, so who knows what he would have done...?  But, I take it to be the case that his lack of (again, mid-game) productivity was what was largely responsible for their having a tough time with the Falcons.  Yes, he hasn't thrown interceptions.  And, fantasy-wise, he's had one GREAT week, one VERY GOOD week, and one decent week, i.e. no BAD weeks, but I think there is a "between the lines" to read on him, not the least of which involves the fact that they brought Carr in to "back him up".  That's my take. Delhomme still being held out of practice... is what currently tops "The REAL Feed":

How about this nugget from a LOCAL source buried deep on "the Gridiron Newsstand"???  It appears there is a chance Delhomme could be done for the season...

Panthers to continue ridin' in the Carr... [smiley=cruisin.gif] Delhomme done for season... according to "The REAL Feed":

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme to have season-ending elbow surgery (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/10/08/2020.ap.fbn.panthers.delhomme.out.4th.ld.writethru.0772/index.html)
SI.com: NFL (08.10.2007 19:31)

Although, it must be noted that that "Carr" has a banged-up rear fender...  His status for this week is actually uncertain.  That guy who came in and threw a 43-yarder, Matt Moore, is next on the totem pole.

Boy, did I read this guy wrong...  Carr out as starting QB indefinitely and Vinny in!  From "The REAL Feed":

Fox makes it clear: Testaverde is Panthers starter over Carr (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/11/21/2020.ap.fbn.panthers.testaverde.0366/index.html)

Well,... it looks like Fox is going to have to rethink his QB situation on short notice... according to "The REAL Feed":

Stiff back could sideline Testaverde vs. Saints (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3125511&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
ESPN: NFL (24.11.2007 13:31)
Quarterback Vinny Testaverde was listed as questionable for the Panthers' game Sunday against the Saints after he showed up for practice Saturday with a stiff back.

I know Carr hasn't looked good, but, with all due respect to Fox and Vinny, this is what you get when you opt to go with a 44-year-old [smiley=wiseman.gif] rent-a-QB who was out of the game until about a month ago. :-/
