Title: Cardinals In-season Report
Post by StegRock on Sep 24th, 2007, 8:04pm
Leinart and Warner... to "split time"... [smiley=idontknow.gif] sort of,... well,... not really, but... [smiley=stilldunno.gif] here's the sitch as per "The REAL Feed":

Leinart still starter, with Warner ready to run Cardinals' no-huddle offense again (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/09/24/2020.ap.fbn.cardinals.quarterbacks.0816/index.html)

I'd like to give yous my take on this Leinart-Warner platoon situation...  Warner is old and can't be considered a franchise quarterback.  He's good for maybe at best two or three seasons.  Ultimately, Leinart's the young guy who they've paid A LOT of money to,... but he may just not have an NFL-caliber arm.  Warner, if nothing else, surely does.  But, here's the real key to the situation. [smiley=key.gif] Their new head coach Ken Whisenhunt comes from Pittsburgh [smiley=towelwave.gif] where he, as we all know, really gelled with Ben Roethlisberger, and, frankly speaking, I see a lot of similarities in the style of play between Warner and Ben. [smiley=builder.gif] I think deep-down Whisenhunt, with all the turn-of-the-century-Rams-esque [smiley=ram.gif] components in place in Arizona, wants to go with Warner, but, for the reasons outlined above, he's kind of stuck.  But, bottom line, I think he really prefers Warner('s style of play as it reminds him of Big Ben).

Interestingly, however, the Whisenhunt offense in Pittsburgh was known for it's smash-mouth running game and quietly efficient passing game. Big Ben was good for about 200 yards and a TD or two. Nice consistency, but that puts you in the bottom half of the top ten for fantasy QB scoring each week. Now that Whisenhunt is gone and Bruce Arians is running the Pittsburgh offense, the offense has opened up a bit more and--injuries to Hines Ward notwithstanding--the offense is much more attractive from a fantasy standpoint.

Do you think, perhaps, that we're looking at a changing philosophy in Arizona... one that will make Edge a better fantasy play again while failing to really exploit the advantages of a stellar WR corps?

The Cards had better change thier approach. The Steelers dont present that formatible of a pass rush and they practically beat Warner and Leinart to death. I mean they took some shots. The old guy isnt going to be able to do that very long.

Leinart, this time, doesn't fall victim to the "platoon", but rather to injury...  From "The REAL Feed":

Leinart leaves with injured collarbone (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/10/07/2020.ap.fbn.cardinals.leinart.hurt.0106/index.html)

This is actually a relief!   I don't have to worry about the frickin platoon!

however, now that defenses know the ultra-immobile Warner is back there, and with Boldin still hobbled, the Cards can expect a ton of blitzes.    That means less for Edge too.

Well, Warner's going to get a second chance,... probably his last...  As I think many of us expected,... currently atop "The REAL Feed":

Leinart out for the season; Cards sign Rattay as backup to Warner (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/wires/10/09/2020.ap.fbn.cardinals.leinart.1st.ld.writethru.0226/index.html)

The good news is it was his non-throwing arm.  The bad news is that it looked HORRIBLE.
