This is a pretty radical departure for the birthplace of the West Coast Offense. What do you guys think it means for the skill position players? My take...

QB... While a Martz-run offense basically guarantees a certain minimum level of production out of the QB position that makes its quarterback, at least, a fantasy factor, all this "radical" change in offensive schemes is probably going to be too much to handle for the youngster, Alex Smith, who is coming off a miserable, confidence-destroying season. If he makes it through this grinder, he could be back on track, moreover, in a big way. My guess, though, is that someone else is at the helm as the 49ers come out of the gate in '08.

RB Frank Gore should be just fine. He is a serious talent, and he can catch the ball. Yes, Martz isn't typically known to be what the doctor called for for tailbacks. But, don't be too jaded by what happened in Detroit. This was the OC for Marshall Faulk in his prime. I see Gore, though in a bit of a different stylistic light than Faulk, as more of a Faulk than a Kevin Jones, et al.

WR... This will be an interesting area. The vision of the receivers they have, Darrell Jackson and Arnaz Battle, in a Martz-run offense is about as appetizing as seeing Steg slinking up and down a stripper pole in his g-string undies... [smiley=moon.gif] ... [smiley=LMFAO.gif] Actually, Ashley Lelie could emerge if he can hang on in Frisco. He's more of a Martz-type receiver. Between Jackson and Battle, I think Battle would win the battle in Martz's system.

TE Vernon Davis likely suffers with Martz as OC. The only hope for him is that that aforementioned wide receiver sitch doesn't get disabused, no new blood at wide out is brought in, and Martz doesn't have a choice but to include Davis, i.e. make a wideout out of him. If that happens, then Davis could be pretty huge. BUT, tight-ends have never reaped the harvest in a Martz-run offense, and I won't believe it will happen in San Fran until I see it. Seeing is believing in this case.

Any more thoughts??? Let hash this one out...

Now was Lelie's lack of interest in learning the previous offense a matter of him realizing he was the square peg? The fact that he's never lived up to the fanfare that accompanied him into the league leads me to believe that there might not be much of a change upcoming. I don't know how bullish I'd be about Lelie right now.

There are a number of intriguing WRs in the draft, but the Niners recent history of drafting WRs (or, perhaps, developing young receivers--Jason Hill, Rashaun Woods, Brandon Williams, Derrick Hamilton) is pathetic, to say the least. The free agent market doesn't offer too much, however I could see Bernard Berrian fitting into Martz's system nicely.

I think that Martz will conform to the personel around him. The 9ers can nither pass protect nor can they run block. So what difference does it make what WR or RB or for that matter QB they have behind that O line. Martz is the next contestant on the game show " Can you fix this team with an new scheme. It aint gonna happen.

Until somebody in the front office of the 49ers, The Raiders, the Texans, the Bengals...Ect..Ect..Ect...Figure out that the 10 most important members of the team. The 10 guys that will take a team to a championship, as well as make skilled position guys fantasy beasts, reside and make their living on the line of scrimmage.
