Well, I kept "Grogan's Heros" for 2 seasons.  I then had a few pretty gay team names before going back to ones that included names of the players on my roster.  "Omegamen" was one of them as I was in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.  In 1993, with the popularity of the show "Beavis & Butthead" and my having Marion Butts, I became...

No, not Butt-sheds ::) (though that is pretty funny, too), like the people [smiley=smileytrash.gif] at the company who hosted our league used to say in their telephone-accessible weekly results.  It was Butts-heads!  And, "me" and the Butts-heads won ourselves a Super Bowl that season, but, in truth, the Super Bowl was not the coveted crown of the league.

I was Philz Mom for a while, and I have a reputation of always going stud-RB.  Wrote a news article:

As you all know, Philz Mom loves to get a bunch of studs to fill her backfield.  One just isn't enough, two, three, or even four are mandatory.  I don't know how many young studs her backfield can hold, but I'm sure she'll reach and surpass her limit.

With this team, I began a four-year run of bridesmaids' finishes, 2nd Place that is!  The value of those solid finishes was punctuated by two bookend Championships.  Point being, it was a good six-year run for the Stegger [smiley=smileytrash.gif] ! ;D

Prime Time
Even used him and got a win with him the week he actually had a solid 80-yard game. ;D And, yes, loyal to my team's name, I held on to him for the WHOLE season.

A guy in one of my dynasty leagues had a team name I liked...... Wallstreet Lungbutter

A couple of the team names I use are:
Trauma Tacklers- I use this most of the time because I work in a hospital operating room and we see a lot of trauma at night.

South Florida Dreadlocks Driving Association- I started using this team name when last year Ricky Williams and Edgerrin James had some traffic violations while driving in So. Fla. Must have been their dreadlocks causing the problems,lol.

After remaining the
BLACKSmiths
for two seasons through the 2000 season, I then came up with a REALLY convoluted, surreal and unreal team name for my 2001 team...

"Ahman Jimmy Johnson Robinson Griese Dick; Garner Holmes Brown Rod!"

I did change after a mid-season trade and "namely" free-agent pick-up to...

"Ahman Jimmy Johnson Robinson Gay Dick!  Davis Holmes Griese Brown Rod."

And, yes, I had ALL the according players and the coach on my fantasy team's roster:  Ahman Green, Jimmy Smith, Marcus Robinson, Brian Griese, Dick Vermeil, Charlie Garner, Priest Holmes, Tim Brown, Rod Smith, (and then) Ben Gay and Terrell Davis!  And, yes, one of my arch-rivals in the GBRFL is named Dave, who is now known as "Holmes Griese Brown Rod". Not a big fan of naming teams after players! I'm old school, players come and go, but teams have identities that need to be forged! Especially with some, players come and go on a weekly basis. What would you do, change your name every other week?

I tend to pick a theme and stick with it.

I played on some intramural teams in college that were called the Fighting Amish...

So, when I first put a FF team together, there was a news story about drug use in the Amish community... my first team was the Amish Drugdealers.

Last year, my Amish Gangbangers made it to the Super Bowl and lost the game without the Priest.

We use cnnsi.com for our league host and they allow you to post news articles and such there.  So I'd often get a picture of one of my players doctor it up with an Amish beard, hat, and suspenders, and use it as the accompanying picture for the story.

This year's team will be the Amish Jihad.

I couldn't agree more PA. Players come and go, especialy on DW's team. Not only via trade, but injuries end carriers all the time. Maybe DW should call his team The Mirage. Every year after the draft it looks good, only to usually fall apart. [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif]

It's a nice idea, but it needs work. The "logos" are more like characters from a bad line of Hallmark cards and the team names are a bit much. People should come up with their own names and then be able to choose from a customizable group of symbols to create their own logo.

Again, I think it's a great idea, but as is, I wouldn't be using the serivce.

Now, a question...  I am just curious.  Who gets the double entendre of the team name the "Plummer Snakes"?  I ask because I was talking to a friend of mine who plays in the GBRFL and asked him, and as it turns out, he played the whole '02 season without really getting it!  I was shocked! Well for those of you that have seen the movie, Old School, I have a team named, "Anthony.....Ear Muffs!", this year. The reason is I have a 3 year old son named, Anthony, and it seems like all I do is curse during the games on Sunday.

I took the name to mean that NFL players aren't ALL known for their benevolence and kindness...  Of course maybe Dolphindan beats his wife - as he hasn't addressed it, we'll never know...

Well, it is finally time for Steggie here to announce his GBRFL team name for 2003.  I actually made a last-minute change from what I was going to go with.  I'll just save that other team name, which is predicated on a very young player, for another future season.  This name, I must admit, did not come from my loins.  It came from the cavernous mind of a close college and fraternity buddy, Mark, known on "the Gridiron" as Sckus Redef 2.

So, without further ado, inspired by teams with truly singular team names, like the Stanford Cardinal and the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Phoenix, which are not even collective nouns, a particular set of controversial current events that just won't seem to go away, and one GREAT player that led me to a championship in '02, I bring to you and the GBRFL table this season the

Amish Thug Posse (Cool name, bad team from last season...Philly and I think alike, that's probably scary)

I like that one... I'll have to remember it.  As you saw, I'm going with the Amish Jihad this year.  I've had the Amish Gangbangers, Amish Drug Dealaz, Fighting Amish, and the Amish Porn Stars.  The one year I wasn't Amish ("100 Yards of Hell") was the year I finished dead last in my league.

Philly, with your affinity for things Amish , you need to check out a comedy/rock group called The Electric Amish. They've got 2 or 3 cd's out that I know of. Basically a classic rock cover band that re-writes said classic rock songs with lyrics that have a poke fun of the Amish slant. A couple of examples: Give me Three Pigs set to Skynyrd's Give Me Three Steps, Come Together (Build A Barn) to Beatle's Come Together (Over Me). Good stuff.

Okay, guys, I've got a bit of a dilemma this year regarding my GBRFL team name and I want you guys' help...

As some of you may know (from this very thread), I (typically) change my team name every year to somehow creatively reflect a player or players on my (new) roster.  See the rest of this thread for examples of this.  This year I am kind of torn between two great team names, on both of which the window of opportunity is pretty small [smiley=ontheclock.gif] (though the reasons for this are different for each).

1) I have both Jake Plummer and Jake Delhomme, and my first idea was to go with... [smiley=drummer.gif] "The Two Jakes".  Besides honoring my two quarterbacking Jakes, it would allow me to pay some tribute to my favorite actor Jack Nicholson.  Obviously, this team name requires me to have two Jakes, i.e., with the way I like to trade, I don't see myself keeping both Jakes for the next two years, so this might have to be the year.

2) But, after a recent trade, another, perhaps even more clever and uniquely creative team name came to mind, the... [smiley=drummer.gif] "Rodsmiths".  This team name would surely satisfy my urges for gay humor (or just my gay urges ;) ), which those of you I have become close with and spoken with on the phone know all too well.  This team name might have a wider window of opportunity because it only requires holding on to one player, but ultimately Rod Smith's illustrous career is coming to a close and I just don't know how much longer he will be a truly viable candidate to commit to for a whole season and name my team after.

What do you think?  You guys' votes here may determine my decision...

Uh-oh!  With a recent trade I just made, we've got a late nominee for Steggie's team name for this year.  I cannot take credit for it.  It came from the loins of the guy with whom I made the trade.  The name revolves around my receiving Isaac Bruce in the trade and already having Rod Smith, Jimmy Smith and Steve Smith on my roster and my old, famed team name the "BLACKSmiths":

How about the "Black and Bruce Smiths"?  Quite creative!  Also, as I mentioned in the post I kicked this voting off in above, the window of opportunity to name my team this is not a very wide one.  It's almost now or never, even more so than the "Rodsmiths" or "The Two Jakes".

So, now, what's your vote?  Do you cast your vote for 1) the "Rodsmiths", 2) "The Two Jakes" or 3) the "Black and Bruce Smiths"?

I prefer something more witty or a play on words.

Especially when you have a limited amount of characters, like in a yahoo league.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tony.  We need another "Pudknockers" or "Boatsmen of Beaverville" like we need more "holes in heads". A person couldn't put MORE effort into integrating his team name with his roster, playing on words and with phrases, and trying to be clever, witty and meaningful with his team name. :-/ "My" "team" name always ties back in to my "team" and/or "my" life.

That is good stuff Tony.....but, I do enjoy the stupid names as well. I always get a chuckle  [smiley=LMFAO.gif] out of what people will come up with. To me it doesn't all have to be brilliant. Zany and stupid names still tell a story about who their creators are!!

And, yes, I had each and every one of the "according" players and held on to them for the entire season:  Emmitt Smith, Robert Smith, Antowain Smith, Rod Smith, Jimmy Smith and Akili Smith (I picked up Maurice Smith and had him for a bit, but couldn't justify keeping him).  Now, my friends, that is "team-name dedication," in every possible sense of the term! ;D


I found it STEG .... I forgot about Antowain!!! I had him too. I think he sat the second half of my playoff game and cost me the pennant if I remember correctly!! [smiley=dejected.gif]
