Title: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Barnaby_Wilde on Nov 11th, 2002, 2:03am I am, after this dismal week, more than likely 2-8, unless Rod Smith walks on water and scores 4 td's... At this point, is it okay to tank games to finish lower in the overall standings, thus garnering a better draft pick? It is a 12 team IDP keeper league. If I am out of playoff contention, shouldn't I start, say, William Green over Ahman Green? Deion Branch over Eric Moulds? Brad Johnson over Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger or Kerry Collins? Or is that unethical? [smiley=Imwithstupid.gif] [smiley=firinback.gif] Please give opinions!! B.W. |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Philly on Nov 11th, 2002, 10:08am Sounds a bit unethical to me. I think that as part of a league, you have some responsibilities. One of which is to put your best (perceived) lineup on the field every week. I know you may be out of it, but there may be someone who is looking to make the playoffs and needs a big effort from you to knock someone else out of the mix. [smiley=coach.gif] If you were in my league and started intentionally tanking games, you wouldn't have to worry about draft order next year because we'd kick your ass [smiley=moon.gif] out of the league. Besides, you've tried legitimately all season (right??) and are 2-8. I think you're going to get an awesome draft slot next year anyway. I can't imagine that a team that is doing as poorly as yours is going to turn it around all of a sudden and win out. [smiley=bulls-eye.gif] Just my thoughts... |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Barnaby_Wilde on Nov 11th, 2002, 10:28am Yes, I have tried all season long. This year, I've pretty much been snake bitten, scoring the second highest points 3 weeks but played the guy who scored the most! It's fustrating!! But we give a monetary prize to the team with the most points at the end of the season, and I can still win that. In my 16 years of fantasy football, I have always put my best team forward. Even out of contention, like you said Philly, it's still satifying to knock someone out with a loss! ;D Guess I am just fustrated this year. 2-8 sucks. :-[ |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by ugley on Nov 11th, 2002, 3:56pm For what it is worth. I am 4-6 with the 3rd highest point total in the league. This team was 10-3 last year, but a combination of bad luck and nagging injuries have haunted me all year. While I have no intent of tanking any games I am looking at trades and waiver wire moves for next year. I do not see any problem with this as it is a dynasty league and I will put my best line up out week to week. [smiley=cheers.gif] |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by armchairlinebacker on Nov 13th, 2002, 1:11am I wouldn't, mostly because of pride. In fantasy football you want to win, even if it doesnt mean anything...i would hate to put a up a lineup that i knew had absolutely no chance of winning. i guess for some people its different but thats my take |

[smiley=no.gif] I want people to be (generally) courteous around here, but I don't want people to be afraid to just say it the way it is (yes, I purposefully avoided the "un-PC", metaphorically equivalent saying) with the use of whatever vocabulary they deem necessary (we all know when someone is being malevolent and when someone is just emphasizing his point with colorful language... case in fuckin' point). How about, instead, saying, "Just presentin' the facts..."? Hell, Philly, you even employed the [smiley=bulls-eye.gif] smiley to illustrate that "that is the way it is and you are bein' straight". I mean let's hammer that shit in [smiley=gettinhammered.gif] [smiley=doseofreality.gif] and not worry about qualifyin' what you say [smiley=hippy.gif] [smiley=chicken.gif] . Now, Barnaby, you da' man and all [smiley=spstan.gif] , but what you're proposing shouldn't even be entering your head, friend. :'( I concur with everybody else here and just like Philly said, you'd be gone from the GBRFL if you pulled that shit. Let's put this in "real-world" perspective. Would we tolerate such behavior out of our professional teams (even though it seems the Bengals do this year in and year out)? [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] Again, along the lines of what Philly said, how fair is it to the teams, two of which lost to you, that had to play you when you put up a fight? So, what, the rest of the teams on your schedule get a freebie? That ain't right! Hell, we've gotten rid of guys for just not playing "hard" toward the end/"playing it out," no less actively trying to lose. Ironically, though, half of the moves you noted you would make towards this end... towards the end would have backfired (thus far) and very well may continue to: Johnson over Warner... [smiley=thumbsup.gif] ... Bulger over Collins [smiley=thumbsup.gif] ... [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] [smiley=fumin.gif] [smiley=evil.gif] Okay, fellas, you may now resume your friendly discussion. |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Barnaby_Wilde on Nov 15th, 2002, 12:59pm Guys, I have been playing this game since 1987, and not once have I not played my best lineup. Even out of the playoffs, I can still beat somebody and play spoiler. Like I said, I was just throwing that out there. I would not tank a game (hell, I run the league and I wouldn't let anyone else in my league do it). The other 11 guys deserve to play vs. your best lineup. I'd love to spank someone and knock them out of a playoff spot. Makes it interesting for next year when them talk of a revenge meeting! [smiley=wagingwar.gif] Guess I was just a little fustrated. I am used to being in the playoff hunt and not sitting in the cellar waiting for the scraps to fall... Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Philly on Nov 15th, 2002, 7:33pm For a looooong time, the Eagles most hated enemy was the Cowboys. Didn't matter who was good or who was bad. Then I think Eagles fans realized that the Cowboys fans (the real ones in Texas, not those 1970s front-runners in the Philly area) couldn't give a hoot about the Eagles. True Cowboys fans are concerned with beating the Redskins. Now the general tenor around Philly is that Giants are #1 on the most wanted list. I think those 8 straight wins by the Giants helped to do that too. And I really don't have anything against you BW. I just don't like the Giants. (My best friend is a Giants fan.) |

Title: Re: Do you tank games if out of contention? Post by Barnaby_Wilde on Nov 15th, 2002, 8:24pm No offense taken!! :) And one of my good friends and member of my league is an Eagles fan, and my wife is a Redskins fan, and I have several loser friends who like the Dull-ass Cowboys, so the whole division is covered. (Glad the Cardinals left, didn't know anybody here that rooted for them! ) on 11/15/02 at 19:33:53, Philly wrote:
