Title: 2003 NFL Draft
Post by StegRock on Feb 13th, 2003, 1:38pm
Well, CNN/SI has done the first 2003 NFL mock draft.  Here is a link:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2003/draft/news/2003/02/09/mock_draft/.

I thought you guys would like to check this out given all of BW's hard work here "between the 20's" previewing many of the players and with OUR OWN "Huddle Up" style NFL Mock Draft to be done right here "between the 20's" right around the corner as stated on "the Sidelines" at:
http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1042955464. [smiley=havinablast.gif]

Edited to adjust the Topic!

Well, it seems like "between the 20's" has evolved into our "Total Draft Center", NFL or otherwise, which is fine by me.  It seems to follow the "Draft" (as this is where we will conduct fantasy Drafts and Mock Drafts) and "non-NFL" (as these rooks have not yet been dubbed NFL players, strictly speaking) themes of "between the 20's".  So, I decided to post these combine notes here "between the 20's" and in the process expand the scope of this thread a little bit.  It would be great if you all could all keep this thread in mind if/when you want to post combine notes of your own or link to other NFL mock drafts.  Thanks! [smiley=bow.gif] Anyway, without further ado, here are some of the first combine notes I have found out there:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2003/draft/news/2003/02/19/combine_wed/.

I hope you all enjoy them!

Here's another mock draft.  Interesting selections, though I can't say I agree with them...

Thanks for the links BW.  It's interesting to see how different they all are.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

BTW: The last link (about.com) didn't seem to work for me - brought up an almost empty page.   ???

Here are some QB-focused combine notes:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1513355.html;

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/don_banks/news/2003/02/23/combine_sider/.

I like the second piece in particular as it contains a lot of direct quotes from scouts, GM's and coaches.

More juicy "2003 Combine & Draft" notes:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/don_banks/news/2003/02/24/banks_newman_insider/;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1513564.html;

http://espn.go.com/nfl/nfldraft03.html.
(This last piece contains nice and tidy links to all of ESPN's draft and combine coverage.) [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

QB Kyle Boller and RB Justin Fargas are viewed as two of the biggest winners of the combine. [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

Just a really nice resource I wanted to pass on to my buds over here, especially those who are draft-addicted:

Len from ESPN is reporting how dramatically things have changed in the draft.  With the lack of star quarterbacks this past free agency, and the apparent incredible draft work outs, QB's are going to be in demand on April 26th.  Here is the latest:

Signals point to QB-heavy first round: Only two weeks ago we opined in this spot that there might not be as many quarterbacks chosen in the first round as some folks anticipated. Oops. Things might have changed in the past fortnight. The continuing rapid ascent of Boller, and some possible juggling in the order at the top of the first round, where both Houston (No. 3 overall pick) and the Bears (No. 4) are trying to trade back, could certainly change that. While the Cincinnati Bengals are not 100 percent sold yet on Carson Palmer, they could still take him with the top overall pick, since it appears they have no tradeoff options.

The Baltimore Ravens are said to be very interested in Byron Leftwich. And let's say, for the sake of discussion, the Bears deal back to the middle of the round and select Boller. That could force a team in the second half of the round, perhaps Green Bay (also said to like Boller), to grab Rex Grossman. The former University of Florida star had a great campus workout on Wednesday, far better than his combine performance, and really impressed scouts. He threw with a better sense of timing at the campus workout, clearly getting into a rhythm, and two personnel directors in attendance used the term "outstanding" in the audition.

QB-focused pieces worth reading:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/don_banks/news/2003/03/21/banks_insider/;

http://espn.go.com/chrismortensen/s/2003/0318/1525546.html.

Keep a tab on the second one by Chris Mortensen as it is to be the first of two. [smiley=lickinmychops.gif]

Here is an interesting article on what Cincinnati is likely to do with their first pick overall of this year's draft; definitely worth the read:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/don_banks/news/2003/03/25/bengals_lewis/.

It does appear that they are leaning toward QB Carson Palmer.  Perhaps that is posturing!  What do you guys think?

Yet another interesting piece...  This time specifically regarding the impact of seemingly innocuous compensatory picks:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/pasquarelli_len/1529607.html.

Worth checking out!  A few notable guys taken with compensatory picks in the past:  RB Amos Zereoue, QB Tom Brady, S Pat Tillman.

LB Shelton Quarles can be added to that list, and Tampa Bay gets the same EXACT pick they used to draft Quarles...

I think the Giants got robbed on these picks. Only 2 six and 2 seventh rounders. Ron Stone made the Pro bowl for San Francisco, and the Giants should of at least got a 4th rounder for him...

Nice to see something actually go in the Eagles favor this offseason.  They got the first overall compensatory pick for losing Jeremiah Trotter and Mike Caldwell last year.  Just wait until next year - they might receive the first overall pick in the draft based on their horrendous offseason.

Great article on what may happen in the draft.  All experts agree that no one has a fucking clue.  Rumor is now that Houston may leap frog Detroit to get Rogers.  Bengals would get the third spot and take a QB.  Makes sense.   They get the QB they want and get him cheaper!!!  Pretty smart.....

Here is the article.  A good read:
