Title: Bengals - 1st Pick Speculation:  It's Palmer!
Post by StegRock on Apr 6th, 2003, 12:51pm
According to "The REAL Feed", QB Carson Palmer is the Bengals man.  However, corroboration of that on the rest of "the Gridiron Newsstand" is not that easy to find.  One piece definitely focuses on Palmer's being the guy they are going to take because the Bengals asking price for the pick is just too high and nobody is willing to "give it up."  However, in another piece, names like WR Charles Rogers, QB Byron Leftwich and CB Terence Newman are brought up.  Here are the pieces, respectively:

I posted this article in another thread yesterday, but i think it belongs here to. I found it while browsing all the NEW links on the NewsStand......

The article speculates that the Texans may trade their first round #3 pick and another draft pick to get the #1 overall pick.  They would then take Charles Rogers.  This makes sense cause Rogers is clearly the #1 WR in the draft.

The Bengals would have the third pick, and would still take a QB, most likely Palmer. ( Neither Houston or Detroit would take a QB.)   This makes A LOT of sense.  Bengals get an extra pick, get the QB they want, and can pay him less money since he is not the #1 over all pick.

Some how this trade seems like a no brainer.  It almost makes too much sense and I am trying to find a down side.  But there is NONE......  It would REALLY piss off Detroit.

Here is what I would do if I were running the Bengals:

Trade the pick to Houston so they can get their hands on Rogers. If Detroit then trade their pick away since Rogers is gone to a team who wants Palmer, then take Terence Newman (who I think they should take anyway).

The Bengals get their man, plus an extra pick. Then take a QB like Simms, Grossman, Ragone,  or even better, Boller if he should slip into the second round (highly unlikey). Newman can start right away, lending help to the Bengals defense, which will be improved anyway under Lewis.

I think the Bengals should take Newman IF they had the third spot too, BUT.............

I think Detroit would take Newman.  They are desperate for a solid corner.  It would be hard for them to pass Andre, but they need a corner as well as receiver......  tough decision.

Just a heads-up!  Check out the two items currently atop "The REAL Feed"!  Intriguing, in the least, and worth, at least, glancing over!

Well....it seems it is official.  ESPN reporting Carson Palmer has reached an agreement with the Bungles.

Well, here is how it reads right now (and as it has been reading for about 40 minutes now) atop "The REAL Feed":

"Bengals Reach Deal With Palmer - The Cincinnati Bengals reached a tentative contract agreement late yesterday with the representative for Carson Palmer, NFL sources said. The deal, barring any last-minute snags, will ensure that the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Southern California will be the first player selected in the NFL draft on Saturday."

And, here is a little corroboration brought to you by way of "the Gridiron Newsstand":

Can't get any better than hearin' it from Bengals.com from an article published at 12:15 a.m. (CST)! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Signs a 7 year 40 mill contract... I think there's an 80 mill bonus? Or maybe it's just late....

Maybe you meant a $10 million signing bonus??

Well, not that this really matters.  We all now know what the Bengals are going to do with their first pick overall and the most important thing for us to do as fantasy footballers now is adjust to/deal with that reality.  That having been said, I would be VERY interested in getting your guys' take on the following quote from "The REAL Feed":

"The Cincinnati Bengals are drafting the wrong quarterback. Carson Palmer, the USC kid with the Heisman Trophy, is certainly fine. He should be drafted high in the first round, and will probably be a good NFL quarterback. But the Bengals should have taken Byron Leftwich, who is big, has a big arm, and without a doubt can play hurt."

Is that the truth?  I mean as you guys know, college football is not really my forte.  As such, I would like to know the thoughts of our more expert members on the quote above...

Tough one.  Most people had Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning.  No one has a frigging clue.....

BUT, I can tell you that I think Palmer is a better QB.  He has much better timing than Leftwich.  He can throw the ball to where the recievers will be rather than where they are......  Just  my opinion.  But with that being said, he only thrived for ONE year.  If he would of come out early last year, he would of been a 6th rounder or so.

While I am making predictions, I am going to predict Andre Johnson will will be better than Charlie Rogers.....

I agree that Andre Johnson will be better than Charles Rogers IN HIS ROOKIE SEASON (I think Rogers will take an injury unfortunately)... BUT, the most successful rookie campaign will come with Kelley Washington I believe. Just an opinion, BUT STILL, for CAREER STATISTICS, Charles Rogers will blow them all away.  8)
