Title: The "real" value of "mock" drafts!?!?
Post by StegRock on May 13th, 2003, 12:48pm
Mock Draft!  (You read the word "Mock" as if it were an adjective.)

(Now, read it like a verb!)  Mock Draft! [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] [smiley=LMFAO.gif] [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] (Hey, it's the "Comedy Club Gang"!)

This has been a play on words on fantasy footballers for years! ;)

Anyway, really, I think their "real" value is overrated.  I think doing a couple can be helpful, but, ultimately, you have to "tackle" the guys in your respective league, know their propensities and so forth.  Mocking against outsiders, so to speak, makes you learn and adjust to those guys' tendencies, which actually may be counterproductive to your goal of adjusting to the tendencies of the specific set of guys in your league.  Now, that recognized, if you are doing them for the fun of it, then have at it.  They are fun; drafting is fun; I would just turn a slightly weary eye towards the "real" value of mock drafts.  They are also good for newbies [smiley=newbie.gif] to do before they take the real plunge.  But, generally, I think time is better spent on the horn getting to know the guys in your league and their thoughts on players... in a natural way.  We have one guy in the GBRFL, who came by way of the internet, and he is just TOO obvious in his "feeling you out... and up so he can bend you over"!  Point is, you gotta' be sincere or people are going to have you pegged sooner rather than later!  Ultimately, expending your fantasy football energies sincerely in this manner is VERY productive.

On that note, as my Korean EFL students used to ALWAYS say, "And you?"

When I do a mock, I allready know what the teams in my leagues tendency's are. Plus, I have a pretty good idea of what a few of the teams allready have planned, because I hang out with them on a weekly basis. I also get inside info on a few of the other teams from another person in our league who hangs out with some of the other guys in the league. The ultimate value of the mock is not to figure out who is taking who, it is to see what players are going to be available when you pick. I do this by taking teams reserves and just plug the best available player on my board, at the postion they need, into their draft slot. Since I use my board, this gives me a worst case scenario of who is going to be available when I draft. I also take into consideration how many players at each postion where taking every round for the last four years. My mocks don't always get right what players go to what teams, but they are very accurate a predicting who will be available when I pick. I then use this info to set up my draft strategy.
Plus, I just love to mock! [smiley=crystalball.gif]

ZAGS, the kind of mock drafting you are talking about (if I am reading this correctly) sounds VERY useful!  And, your use of this smiley, [smiley=crystalball.gif] , to exemplify what you are doing is right [smiley=bullseye.gif] !  Yours is a good ididdle! [smiley=bow.gif]

I use the same method to do "mocks" as the Zags do, in fact, most of the time we do them together to get more input. To say doing mock drafts is for newbies is way off base. This is my 8th year of fantasy football(not a newbie) and I will continue to "mock" for as long as I participate in fantasy football. In fact, the more "mocks" I do, the better and more accurate they get(because I am not a newbie). Long live the "mocks" and the "newbies".

I love it when people do all kinds of hard work preparing their mocks, then turn around and tell everyone and their brother what they've found.  It makes for a very well balanced league. [smiley=soapboxer.gif]

Personally, I am not a big mocker! I only do 1 or 2 and I do them the day before the draft when it is useful. I honestly see no point in doing a mock draft 2 1/2 months before training camp starts. Unless, of course as Steg said, you are doing it simply for fun. Way to many things can change between now and the draft!

All humor aside, I agree with the Zags and DW about the value of mock drafts.  Is there a whole lot of value in a mock at this point in the off season?  Probably not, but I think they do them because they love football and will take any fantasy action they can get.

I can't stand doing a live draft... let alone a "mock" draft that has no value at all other then having a "guess" at what players a certain person would be take.

If people were smart though, they'd make some bullshit picks that they wouldn't normally make so people don't "catch on to their tendencies."

I hate drafting simply because they're boring. I doubt you'll see me doing a mock any time soon....  ::)

I hope you meant you hate mock drafts. How could you hate the draft? It is truly one of the greatest days of the year.  [smiley=ragin.gif] If your draft is boring, maybe you should try to find a new league!

I hear you PA! Draft day is the best day of the year! Our league has over $200 in it's budget just for food and beer on draft day. There also is no time to get bored at our draft becasue you only have one minute to make your pick or you have to pass. I get so fired up for our draft, I actually have trouble sleeping the night before.

Mock drafts are fun and you can learn a lot from them. For me, it's more about finding "sleepers" [smiley=sleepers.gif], or players I may have overlooked in my preparation. If I can see that a particular player continues to be drafted, I'll take a closer look at him and try to figure out where these people are coming from.

Plus, I love the rush I get from the live drafts... the clock is ticking and the player you want is still on the board... your turn is 2 picks away... will he still be there? What if he isn't? What are you going to do? One of my most hated things is when the guy you want gets drafted right in front of you... you think it's all coming together , and then...  :o SHIT, MOTHER FUCKER! My heart is beating faster just thinking of draft day.  I can just hear it now.  "Duzerdogz, you're now on the clock."  "Shit, Morris was this guy taken??"  "Yes", I said.  "How about that guy?"  "No", I replied.  "The Duzerdogz select Koren Robinson".  "Great Pick!", a voice yells from across the draftroom.  I think to myself, how in the hell did this guy win the SuperBowl?? [smiley=doseofreality.gif]
