I think those top 3 RBs are the easy leaders, but don't see much difference between them. Its this second group of RBs coming up that scares me - each one seems to have a big question mark. |

You think 3rd is tough. Try 8th when the top RB's are gone and you've gotta choose between guys with a lotta ?'s but big potential, consistent RB's with low ceilings, a QB, or Owens/Harrison. I personally believe 7th is the worst pick in the draft, followed closely by 8 because at least at 7th if someone grabs a QB you get one of the top RB's (IMO). |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jun 30th, 2003, 2:09pm I am ok with the quality of guys I am looking at in the first round. As a preference, I like to be close to the edges without being right on them - 3rd and 10th spots are ideal. When I am sitting in the middle I really can't expect a player to last through 12 more picks... and it looks like I am reaching more. I will say this, I'll take 7th over first and last any day. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jun 30th, 2003, 2:25pm Please don't get me wrong... I'm very happy with my pick of Portis at #3 and am also very happy with my draft position... all I'm saying that in my analysis, Portis and 3 other RBs still available are all just about interchangeable. I think LT2 and RW are on a tier of their own right now, with an excellent group of about 5 RBs right behind them. |

I've spent some time trolling several Chiefs message Boards and reading everything i can get my hands on related to Priest Holmes. I really like the situation he is in (compared to, say, Edge last year). I am not 100% sold, or I would see him as belonging with the top 3. I definitely do not agree with labeling Priest as a mediocre RB. I can remember several games versus the Steelers when he showed flashes of brilliace. Yes, he is the right type of back for that system, but i don't think there are more than 3 other backs in the league who would fit as well (Faulk, Edge, and LT). As far as Larry Johnson goes, he is the wrong back for the system. He will be a good complement to Priest, but will not excel in that offense by himself. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jun 30th, 2003, 3:04pm Speaking of the right back for the system, playing with this "best ball" format Alexander will be a stud! I will be able to capitalize on his monster games and (hopefully) have a decent replacement "ball" for his down games. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jun 30th, 2003, 4:45pm I had Portis, Alexander, and McAllister all rated pretty much the same at #3, with Faulk just behind those 3. I don't have Holmes on my draft board at all. He is just too much of a question mark for me to use a top pick on. I didn't take Deuce just because he has two receivers taking some scores away, plus his O-line is not as good as last year. I chose Portis over Alexander (just barely) because I think Denver will have to rely on the run just a bit more than the Seahawks, but it was a toss-up. |

If you re-read the article, I state in it "I don't think Johnson's that good either, but the fact KC spent their first rounder on a runningback does not bode well for Priest Holmes." I hyped him way too much I guess. Anyways, for my James pick. I don't like the pick much at all. He's not that much better than four other RB's on my board. My only hope is that he at least gets some of the TD's he was denied last year. If he gets pulled on the goalline again, I'm going to be relying on some sleeper RB's. As for why I picked James instead of the other four... well, I've got my eye on one of them and hope he falls to me. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DOLFAN on Jun 30th, 2003, 10:24pm I actually like both picks. T.O. is so close IMO to Harrison thats its almost a coin toss. He is also a F/A at years end. Vick is a QB and a 650/6-8 TD RB too. My only isses is if he can stay healthy. I respect that he WANTED Vick, so he went for him. He will either win big or not. He has too much upside not to like. BG i think you are forgetting that this league is a mistake free league. "Best Ball" format allows you to be a little bolder than normal. SO if your high pick is a bust, so fucking what. Plus the fact that we have an extra/flex player. In essence we all are starting 2 QBs, 4 RBs, 4 WRS and the like, so why not. I like your picks Stegey. Vick surely was early, but the upside of 2 pasing 3 passing tds and 1 rushing td 2-3 times a years works for me. The winners of this league and top guys will be the depth that they get late in the draft. I'm certain that the guys from last year realize that. Excluding Priest of course. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Jun 30th, 2003, 11:26pm Here is my take regarding really late picks, especially the LAST pick and especially in a decent-sized 12-team league... You guys are already ahead of me, way ahead of me in some cases, at one of the three main positions, running back. Why not I get ahead of, or at least get a jump on, you all at the other two, quarterback and wide receiver? The way I look at it, Vick is one of five or so QB's I would put in the "top" tier, and Owens is one of three "top-tier" wide receivers. I actually have Owens as my #1 going into '03; Vick, on the other hand, I would rank #3 or #4, but I just LOVE the guy's upside and the player himself more than the two or three guys I would rank above him, but still in the same class as him. So, in no way, shape or form, do I think that I picked "a tier below", so to speak. Bottom line, though, I would have gotten neither or these guys with my next two picks. I will say this... if Jamal Lewis would have fallen to me, I would have taken him, only because he is in my top 5/6 at RB. I was ultimately going to take Lewis, Vick or Owens, whichever two made it to me. SO, now, in hindsight, to REALLY get down to the nitty-gritty here, REALLY bad picks, for BW in particular as he picks right next to me, would have been like Harrison or Ahman Green as he could have gotten those guys no matter what. |
||||||
|
Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Razzak on Jul 1st, 2003, 1:56am I think Vick and Owens are #1 at their positions... but there's a serious lack of RB's after the top 15 so I wanted my second one now. As for Dillon over Taylor... They actually have about the same stats, while the bungles should be a little better this year with some consistency at QB and a more hopeful Dillon, the Jags are on the way out. Brunell can't make it 8 games, and while Leftwich will be a good qb he won't in his first year. It's all Jimmy. While you might think that would mean a big dose of Taylor, we all know what happens when Taylor gets a lotta touches. Taylor may very well have a blockbuster year, but I think Dillon is more likely to have a 1500/300 yard year. Suggestion: Steg can we make the kicker spot "team-kicker"? I'm sure nobody wants to lose because their kicker got injured. Just since we can't hit the waiver wire it might be a nice idea. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DOLFAN on Jul 1st, 2003, 2:03am Hmmm, [smiley=hmmmm.gif], I guess i misunderstood the rules then. If you read my post again you will see that i said "in essence" we are starting all of those guys because it is "best ball." We don't submit lineups on a weekly basis. "The Starters" are the guys that get you the most points from their position. So if Ron Dayne is on your team, as a backup to Tiki, and has 2 TDs and 42 rushing yds he will score more than Tiki Barber if Tiki gets 139 rushing yds, 0 TDs and 23 receiving yds. Most guys ina normal league would have started Tiki. Who had the better day?? Tiki of course, but in this league Dayne would be your starter based on the points he scored. [smiley=arguing.gif] So we toss 4 rbs out there every week and take the guys that get ya the most points. Thats all i was saying. Now if you would have drafted Owens and Harrison you wouldn't need to draft another WR until round 10. |

Nope! Remember, even though I run the stats for this for the season as a league of sorts, this is a mock draft (first and foremost). Our visitors may want to use this "mock draft" of ours as a resource. So, you have to choose an individual kicker. Now, you may ask, "Well, why can't I just have the kicker for whatever team the kicker I choose is on just in case the kicker I choose gets injured?" Simply put, I would not want the potential headache a 2000 version of Joe Nedney could create. Bottom line, the CBFL has done kickers this way for two years now and it has been just fine. Someone even had that guy who got injured and basically missed like ALL of last season. I think it was Todd Peterson. No complaints, though! It is just another dimension to the significant amount of luck involved in this very unorthodox league. |

Tony, everybody, make sure you know all the rules from the CBFL "Rules/Scoring" page! You are NOT permitted to select two kickers or two defenses. Your "swing" player MUST be a QB, RB, WR or TE. I considered extending the draft one round so as to include a second kicker, but a) that would really unnecessarily prolong this and, MOREOVER, b) it would TOTALLY water-down the position. I mean given this "best ball" format, if we were dipping from the stats of TWO kickers each week, who would lose? The whole position would be such a wash. It would be more like we should consider just abolishing the position. BUT, for the "mock" draft purposes here, we canNOT do that. So,... let's not make a mountain out of a molehill. :) |

I didn't think he was going to be around for my next pick and I will have to make up for my lack of a solid #2 RB somewhere. In fact, the guy I have ranked as the 5th best QB for this league should be available in the 6th-9th round. To show how focked up I am, I have Hines Ward ranked as my 3rd best WR this year. Maybe that is a homer bias (although I rank plenty of Pittsburgh players lower than consensus). By studying average drafts and other mock drafts, I felt he should and available at my 3.07 pick and passed him up at 2.06 even though he was the highest ranked player on my board. Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jul 2nd, 2003, 5:43pm I think I have been very lucky in the way players have come to me, and my team is shaping up nicely: 1.07 Shaun Alexander - I have never had him on my team, scared this season because of his inconsistency, this actually is a benefit in this league. 2.06 Charlie Garner - Very serviceable 2nd RB 3.07 Hines Ward - My favorite offensive player on my favorite team, this may be the first year he is being valued correctly IMHO 4.06 Torry Holt - I got lucky he dropped to me here, planned on Driver 5.07 Todd Heap - the last of the Big 3 TEs taken, I also got lucky here, I actually like him better than Gonzo or Shockey (I would have taken either of those guys at this spot too though) Lots of good QBs left, I might wait a few more rounds before grabbing one. ;D |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Razzak on Jul 2nd, 2003, 5:43pm Well.. so many teams refusing to take a QB has seriously hurt me at WR. I knew the QB pool would be deep, I just figured a couple teams would get scared the QB's wouldn't drop another 2 rounds and snatch'em up. Ah well. I grabbed Booker cuz he explodes every few weeks which is good for best ball IMO. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jul 2nd, 2003, 5:50pm Booker was the highest player on my board. Nice pick! |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DOLFAN on Jul 2nd, 2003, 6:01pm I do like Heap. DD called me to tell me that it was my pick. I told him i was torn between Heap and Favre. I think that Favre will have a slightly better year this year since Glenn is gone and those young WRs step up. He doesn't run much anymore, but i will take 27 TDs from my QB. Maybe i can hook him up with Chad Hutchinson and they can light it up every other week! NOT!!!!! I really wanted Garcia last round but am happy with Favre. I took the pussy way out. This guy has never missed a game...just like Eddie George. I like my roster so far. I don't regret not getting Heap, but with Robinson going there and Jamal looking better this year, maybe Heap will lose some yds and 1 TD. Never know. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Razzak on Jul 2nd, 2003, 8:25pm Hambrick's a good pick. You know Steg, unless he's lost it, won't take another QB in the next two picks, so Barnaby takes Hambrick in case Steg was eyeing him. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Jul 2nd, 2003, 9:29pm Of the players left at WR and RB after I made my last picks, I had Mason ranked sixth and Emmitt ranked second and still in the tiers that we were in for their respective positions: WR's 1. Tory Holt 2. Jerry Rice 3. Rod Smith 4. Peerless Price 5. Laveranues Coles 6. Derrick Mason 7. Donald Driver 8. Chad Johnson 9. Marty Booker 10. Jimmy Smith Remember Mase missed 3+ games last season! Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by BarnabyWilde on Jul 2nd, 2003, 9:30pm Brady was a guy I was hoping to get next round, but I figured maybe a run on Quarterbacks was coming, so I took the AFC leader in touchdowns from last year. I thought I might get toasted by the group for going "D" too early... [smiley=shrug.gif] Once again I was faced with a tough decision. Do I take my #2 RB from slim pickin's or go in a different direction and take the "sure thing" ([smiley=fingerscrossed.gif])? My lack of depth at RB has forced me to make up those points in other areas. McNabb, Shockey and Tampa (all of which were #1's on my list) should help me do that. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DocNiner52 on Jul 3rd, 2003, 9:21am I don't know BW. You can never have enough RB's ;) I kinda went away from the way I usually draft by taking 4 RB's in the first 5 rounds. Since this is a free league I wanted to try something a little different in my drafting strategy. I'm happy with Henry and A. Green as my 2 primary backs and I like Barlow and Dunn to do pretty well this year too. I may have pulled the trigger a tad early on Robinson but I see him as a top 10 receiver this year. Jerry Porter looks good as well for this season. I think he stands a good chance of double digit td's this year. I'll just have to wait and see how that 4 rb theory pans out. How long do I have to stay a Waterboy? If Vicki Valencourt :-*(spelling) comes along with it no need to move up. |

I agree with your assessment of his roster, although I do like the Stallworth pick. If he stays healthy, there's no reason he can't emulate Peerless Price of a year ago. But Clark will definitely steal some balls from Pollard. |

On the other hand, my RB's all of a sudden don't look so bad! I feel confident that Buckhalter will win the job over Staley and given what I have heard about Bettis's offseason workout regiment and Zereoue's lackluster performance last year (3.7 yards per carry... for that kind of back [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] ), I think Bettis will regain the starting job and run for 1,000 and be the goal-line guy as well. Overall, not as bad as I initially thought! [smiley=shrug.gif] |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jul 3rd, 2003, 8:52pm Steg - for your team I really love those 2 picks. As a Steelers homer, Bettis is the one offensive player I feel is significantly underrated this year. I would have grabbed him instead of A. Smith if I don't try to limit the Steelers on my teams (and I already had Ward). Look for Bettis to cement a Hall of Fame career this year and be far above Amos in final numbers. Buckhalter is a guy that could come on and put up very good numbers, especially with how Staley is acting with a holdout. BW - 2 decent picks, however I liked your alternate better for each one (you know what I mean). |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Walker Boh on Jul 3rd, 2003, 9:06pm Thanks DD! :) I'm very happy with my core of WR's (Toomer, Jimmy Smith and Conway), they may not be the biggest names out there, but all three of them are solid #1 guys for their team and I should get good production from the group. Couple that with McNabb at QB, Barber at RB, Shockey at TE and the Tampa D and my team doesn't look that bad... now if Barlow would only join the Army... [smiley=commander.gif]. I'm very aware of the fact that my team is "Giant" heavy, and I'm sure that will cost me. Let's hope they play like they did in the second half of that SF playoff game last year! (Sorry, BW... Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by bgsgfan on Jul 3rd, 2003, 9:35pm Plummer is the one player I think is being the most undervalued this season. I currently have him projected as the 5th or 6th best QB! I can't believe how lucky I have been with this draft, in having "my guys" fall to me. PS - I am a Plummer convert. When he initially went to the Broncos I wasn't sold whatsoever. The more I thought about it - the weapons and coaching he has now at Denver, the style of QB he is vs Griese, the higher I get on this guy. Rod Smith is still in the height of his career, Lelie is improving, McCaffrey is back this year, Portis is a bona fide stud... with all this talent and the rat genius Shannahan as a coach, Plummer is going to rock! |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 3rd, 2003, 9:35pm Dolfans selection of Larry Johnson forced my hand to take another RB. I was planning on settling on Johnson in round 9 or 10. However, since he snagged him from me, I felt I needed to take someone else now. I took Allstot casuse the situation in Tampa is so screwed up. Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Jul 3rd, 2003, 10:15pm You guys must be like REALLY crazy about Warner, Mack and Stallworth and even Burress for that matter. With all due respect, 420's team does little for me, besides Williams and Moulds. Burress, though great, I think is a little overrated, as I think is Stallworth, especially given what else was on the board at that time, and Mack is just plain shit on a shit team with NO o-line. Who dubbed this guy Barry Sanders? And, even though I was in Korea, wasn't Kurt Warner like the worst QB ever last season? What did he have like 3 TD's to 13 INT's and 0 wins or something like that? Why does he get such a free pass with the typical "what have you done for me lately" fantasy football crowd? I, for one, do NOT think this Rams team will EVER be a shadow of what they were in '99. They are slowly, but surely gettin' old. Even if Warner does pick it back up in the beginning, he is like one shot to his hand away from packing it in with a capable guy right behind him and there are NO trades or free-agents in the CBFL. And, then Pollard! ??? [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] Anyway, I do not want to pick on FourTwoOh personally. It is just funny how perceptions can be SO VASTLY different. I mean, ultimately, I think it is fairly even across the board as bgsgfan says, but, to split hairs, I actually thought 420's team was one of the bottom teams. Just strange! Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jul 3rd, 2003, 11:01pm Wow... you guys are leaving me some great players. Rod Gardner is definitely underrated. He was 1000+ yards last year, and had 5 or 6 of his 8 TDs in the 2nd half of the season when he started to develop a rapport with Ramsey. Troy Brown played injured the entire season last year and still grabbed 97 balls. Now that he is healthy, look for him to get about 2-3 more yards per catch and find the endzone more often too. You guys can talk about who has a solid roster and who doesn't all you want, but I love my team so far. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Jetdoc on Jul 3rd, 2003, 11:36pm At Steg's request, some brief commentary to put everyone on the defensive (even myself): 420 - Very strong WR contingent, very weak at the 2nd RB slot. Needs RB depth in a hurry, but all of the RB talent is now dried up. Should've taken either a backup QB or backup RB with his 7th round pick. Tony O - VERY weak at WR with only Coles and Rogers. Very deep RB corp with quality starters and backups and solid QB makes up for this...a couple of late round WR steals and this is a hard team to compete with. Philly - Two very good QB's. Too bad both can't start each week. Great #1 RB, but #2 RB is a little shaky. Lack of RB depth really hurts this team given questions about #2 RB, especially with the lack of quality RB's left this late. WR's are deep but average. Jetdoc - My team is average all around. Faulk/Davis aren't stellar, and my backups are more insurance than starters. QB's are nice rotisserie tandem, but neither is a superstar. WR's are above average, but lacks depth - I need to address this soon. Overall, a team that will compete week in, week out, but won't blow away the league. Dirk - Went stud RB all the way, which left his WR's a little weak and scary (a WR that switched teams and an old WR with a new QB), without any WR depth to back those up. QB is good, but needs a solid backup to handcuff. The top three RB trio may be the best in the league, which will mean solid rotisserie points for this duo. If WR and QB depth is achieved, this team could be very good. DOLFAN - This team has the best set of WR's in the draft thus far in Moss/Driver/Bruce. Add to that a capable RB duo and a pretty good QB, and you're looking at a special team. Lack of RB depth hurts a bit given George's health, but Johnson may pay off. Lots of potential with this team, and even has a good D. bsgsfan - Very good RB's, very good WR's, very good TE, TERRIBLE QB's. If either Hasslebeck or Plummer pan out, his team is the team to beat. Having these two, even platooning at QB, would make me uncomfortable. I'll post the remainder of the teams in another post. |

Some of the recent WR picks have been steals - I looked at them, but had to pass because of my QB situation. Rod Gardner - While Coles is getting all the attention, Gardner has become a steal. Quincy Morgan - He is the one WR that has cemented a starting spot for the Browns. Troy Brown - Reports are looking good for Brown out of the spring camps. If anyone is in a league that awards for receptions, this guy could be a steal. |

However, I don't like any of the other QB's on the board and if someone, like Walker, grabbed him I'd be very disappointed. I think Ramsey has big game potential which will really help in best ball. I just couldn't see the value in going any other position at this round.. not at the potential cost of losing the guy I wanted. |

Sharpe is hardly a dropoff from the rest picked. I see one big top tier at TE that includes about 7 or 8 guys, Sharpe one of them. So, considering he was the 7th TE picked in our draft, I am VERY happy. As for the Galloway pick, if Captain Lou had joined in with us, he would have had my head. [smiley=annoyed.gif] I scolded him for taking Galloway last year, saying he wasn't being "forward-thinking" in picking that "proven loser". Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Walker Boh on Jul 4th, 2003, 7:06pm I was VERY close to taking both Peterson and Sharpe with my last pick, but ultimately, I had to go with my strategy of picking up the "#1" guys a bit early in hopes of making up the points I'm sure to lose with my lack of depth at key positions. Shannon Sharpe is a good pick at this point, as was Pinkston (whom I wanted). *Sidenote, I decide between "who" and "whom" by thinking to myself, "who is whom." For some reason that didn't work in this case - perhaps The English Master can help me out. Anyhow, I debated a while this morning before picking Travis Taylor. he was easily the highest ranked WR on my board, but his bye week was the same as one of my other WRs. This will leave me with only 2 WRs in my pool on week 5, and one of them will be my 4th WR. |

Taylor was the best player on the board IMO. So I had to revisit my pick... I ended up taking the best TE on the board. Jolley emerged last year as a solid TE and I see that continuing this year. He gets the occasional TD, which is really all i can ask for. Dolfan selected Thomas Jones. THREE running backs from the Bucs have now been taken. Scarey!! I don't feel my team has what it takes to win and none of the other players at that time were going to put me "over the top". I'm just trying to get an exemption for next year. Here's how I see it: 1. Gramatica kicked the most FG's last year 2. Tampa has a great D and will give the Tampa O plenty of chances 3. Tampa is not a powerhouse on offense and will have to settle for a lot of FG's Antsports may not have Gramatica at #1, but more then half the sites I visited do. In all likelihood, he will split time with Barlow. The same goes for Pittman, who when even playing full time won't dazzle you with his numbers. [smiley=monkey.gif] ... [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] In any case, your example of "Who is whom" is a dangerous one, actually. It could be "Who is who" in some instances and even within some sentences "whom to be whom". Bottom line, "who" is for subjects or subject complements and "whom" is an object pronoun although anymore we often use "who" even for objects, especially objects of the preposition when the preposition is put at the end, e.g. "Who is the bicycle under the Christmas tree for?" or "For whom is the bicycle under the Christmas tree?" Now, in your sentence, ask yourself, "How is 'the word' functioning?" ... There, it is functioning as a "Direct Object" relative pronoun of an adjective clause. If you took the clause for itself and made a simple sentence out of it, it would read, "I wanted Todd Pinkston." Todd Pinkston is the "Direct Object", so, strictly speaking, Todd Pinkston should = "whom" in the adjective clause of your sentence: Shannon Sharpe is a good pick at this point, as was Pinkston, whom I wanted (comma somewhat optional, but I prefer it in this instance). However, this kind of sentence is all too often mistakenly spoken and even written as: Shannon Sharpe is a good pick at this point, as was Pinkston, who I wanted. This mistake is becoming so commonplace that it is almost evolving out of American English as an error. I hope that helped! [smiley=bow.gif] And, if you found that helpful and you want to give me a hand in a substantive way, get on over to and get the word out about theEnglishMaster.com. Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Jetdoc on Jul 5th, 2003, 11:11pm The rest of my team-by-team analysis, as promised: Razzak - Went stud RB in the first three rounds, but his RB's aren't as solid as you would expect with that strategy. The area of his sacrifice was WR, but the tandem of Booker/Jackson/Chambers should pay some nice, but not spectacular dividends. This team is like mine - boring, but should be competitive week in, week out. DocNiner - Four RB's in his first five picks gives him the best RB corp depth in the league. That leaves him with a shuttle QB duo in Collins/Johnson, which is serviceable, and a VERY young WR corp in Robinson/Porter/Pinkston. If any of those WR's don't live up to their billing, Doc may be in for a world of hurt because his QB's won't be able to pick up the slack. Walker - Spit it the face of conventional wisdom and didn't take his 2nd RB until the 7th round. That leaves him with very good specialty positions (TE/K/D) and a great QB, but average but deepWR's and a pitiful RB corp. If Hearst loses his starting job, Walker's gonna have to hope that his specialty advantage outpaces other teams' workhorse RB/WR tandems. Barnaby - Strong at RB (unless the Bears RBBC) and WR, Barnaby left himself a little vulnerable at QB. Otherwise, a very strong team with good depth. Not much to complain about here...could be at the top of the standings. Steg - Awesome QB's and pitiful RB's are obvious. Three older RB's that will split time, at best, is scary, but may pay off in a platooning situation. Owens and Mason really need to carry this team week in, week out. If Duce Staley gets hurt, Steg's team could make a run at it. |

I have to chime in here as I took Galloway over Taylor in a somewhat close call. Yes, Taylor had an excellent close to the 2002 season... with QB Jeff Blake. He SUCKED while Redman, who will likely be under center for the start of '03, was under center. Also, I think it will be interesting to see what kind of impact M. Rob, Sanders and Ron Johnson have. Galloway, on the other hand, in a horrendous offense, actually had a GREAT season, relatively speaking, 871 yards and 6 touchdowns going into December. All the constituent parts are the same, but now he is playing under a GREAT coach/motivator, who will bring MUCH MORE stability to the team. Parcells must see "something" in Hutch as he did not bring in ANY veteran competition and is apparently willing to go forward with him. This also seems to stand for RB Troy Hambrick. What I am getting at is that I think Dallas's offense, with another year of experience and more certainty at the all-important positions of QB and RB coupled with their not having "lost" much (of what little they stood to lose), stand to improve this year, even if only marginally, which should equate to an easy 1,050 yards and 7 TD's from Galloway, numbers that I firmly believe are not as easily penciled in for Taylor this year. |

I have set this precedent many times here on "the Gridiron", at FFToday taking him in last year's mock draft and defending his seemingly "lackluster" performance even though he was on a CBFL team that was going down the tubes, and in the GBRFL where he is currently still on my roster. I think he will rebound in Dallas back under the tutelage of Parcells. ALL of that having been said, I took Galloway and would definitely rank him quite a bit higher than Glenn. I am not telling you guys this as much to "justify" my pick as I am to give you guys something to go away with. I agree. I think in this league if you don't have 3 solid backs you're gonna be in trouble. You can make up for poor WR's with depth. There's plenty of QB's to go around. But RB's.. those teams with borderline #3 RB's are already putting themselves at 30 point disadavantages just for the bye weeks, let alone how much having a 3rd RB will help out the slumping one. The only way to counter that is with the top D's and TE's, and there's only a couple of those out there ;). P.S. This isn't specific to any team, just in general. |

Some good news for you - Akers took some practice kicks on the Eagles new playing surface and loved it. He even connected on a few 55+ yarders during the practice. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 7th, 2003, 10:35am I went with best player on my board for this pick. AND, I took a look at the other rosters decided I would take my EXTRA player at this point. Drew Brees is going to be a solid player. Not stellar, but solid. And with the addition of Boston, I only see him posting better numbers. I knew all along I wanted a QB as my extra player. This is as much a defensive pick as a good pick for me. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DocNiner52 on Jul 7th, 2003, 11:18am I could quite easily be mistaken but I thought we approved option #1 which was to add a 16th round with the extra player being a PK. Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 7th, 2003, 11:29am From the rules on CBFL home page: Quote:
YOU STILL GET ONE SWING PLAYER..... I see how you got confused. When it was talked about adding a 16th round, it states adding a flex player. We decided to add a kicker. HOWEVER, it was to a vote whether to have TWO swing players or ONE swing player and a kicker. We voted on a kicker. I went back and read the post on the voting. I see how it was confusing. It appears we eliminated the swing player and added a kicker. But we were just voting on what the 16th round should be. A kicker or swing player. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 7th, 2003, 11:38am Well, I see bgsgfan took his 3rd QB as well. And Dolfan made his pick of Couch. I see I have set a run on QB's. I see this trend continuing....... I am interested in seeing what others are going to do with their swing player. I was torn between RB and QB. I figured having a 3rd QB will really help since QB's can be so inconsistant and in best ball format it would be advantagous to get that 3rd scorer in the mix. IN addition, I will have two players to chose from during bye weeks. This was my logic..... (however flawed it may be) |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 7th, 2003, 2:31pm DocNiners pick is an interesting one. If Kitna can produce like the second half of last year he will be a steal this late. That is a BIG "if". Will Kitna be crappy as in years past and have Palmer thrown into the mix? I know they say that they will wait a year for Palmer, but when a team is 2-7 I see the possibility of Palmer playing. So many questions around Kitna that I was afraid of him on my team. Personally, I am rooting for Cinncinatti. I like Lewis as coach and hope he has a great coaching year. Plus I like rooting for the underdogs. |

EXCELLENT observation. You are RIGHT [smiley=bullseye.gif] ! As for Shipp, I will tell you this much, BW. I was NOT going to take him. There is NO way I was going to get any further sucked into the Cardinals backfield. Though I REALLY like Shipp's future, this is not a keeper league and I see Shipp, at best, doing what Hambrick did last year. :P Smith will be the workhorse there in '03 and he NEVER gets injured or asks to be taken out. I was TOTALLY going for Jamel White. He was one of only four RB's on my list at this point worth a damn, but he was, by quite a bit, the best of the group. Shipp was not one of them, by the way. White is like a tier (if such a term can rightfully be used at this point) above those other three in that he is a guy 1) whom you can pencil in for about 750 combined yards and 4 combined touchdowns, AND 2) who serves both as his teams 3rd-down, change-of-pace back AND immediate backup, moreover, to a starter whom I too still have reservations about. He was the last RB who brought to the table both some level of consistency that can be expected AND some really effable ;) upswing. In the other (three) cases, I only see, at best, one of those two aforementioned factors in place, but not both like for White. :D As for Smith, I agree. I think he has a little more upside based on his performance last year than the other two or so that I am thinking of. The guy I was REALLY targeting, though, was Tai Streets. Smith was my second choice. |

I'm going out for a few hours and don't want to keep you guys waiting again. I'll take Chad Pennington. I'm surprised he fell this far in the draft, beyond guys like Brees, Kitna, and Kordell. The post-Pennington QB crop will be truly hideous. At this point, I think Chad will help me by about 20-30 points at the end of the year where taking a WR or RB probably wouldn't help me at all. That is, if that dipstick Paul Hackett doesn't screw him up. I planned to take 5 WR's at the beginning of the draft, but the truly meager selection of WR's and RB's out there right now leaves me with the alternative of taking the last modest QB. |

Conventional wisdom seems to be that he is just going to step aside for Porter. Yeah right! Last year his FF production dropped off because of his TD total (only 2), but he still had 939 yards. In the past 3 rounds there has not been a WR drafted that you can count on as much as Tim Brown (some have a better upside, granted). Most of the WRs drafted recently haven't had a season that approaches Brown's season last year (which was the worst of his previous 5 if not more). I'm not sure I agree with most of these as steals... Garcia in the middle of the 4th round is a steal? There were still many other quality QBs - who will likely have better stats - still available. Derrick Mason is injury prone, has a weaker supporting cast this year, and struggled to score 5 TDs last year, and he's a steal in round 5? Antowain Smith has had one good season in his career. Kerry Collins and Keyshawn were certainly very good picks in round 7. But steals? Rod Gardner had almost the same numbers as KJ, but 3 more TDs and went 12 picks later. Quincy Morgan and Joey Galloway, who each had about 20 less receptions, but a better yards-per-catch average and more TD receptions went in the 9th and 10th rounds respectively. Kerry Collins can't throw TD passes, although he does rack up the yards. The left side of his O-line is gone, so there is no reason to think he'll do better this season... Just my two cents... Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Tony_O on Jul 8th, 2003, 1:40pm Let me clarify myself.............I meant the steal of the NFL DRAFT. This first round talent slipped to the 4th round. I was not speaking of our mock draft we have going here. This draft is about drafting players were they SHOULD be drafted, not finding a steal. There are too many knowledgeable participants in this draft to get a "steal". If you think you got a certain player who was a steal, most likely it was that nobody else wanted him or had him ranked high enough to grab him. Just my 2 cents. |

With Gramatica and Janikowski, I figure I've got 2 of the top 5 kickers, and more importantly, I'm keeping a top 5 kicker away from someone else. The Raiders' offense will have to slow down eventually (hopefully this year) and that will equate to more FG opps. for Janikowski. I've got about 20 guys left on my depth chart and I think most of them will still be around with my next few picks. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Jul 8th, 2003, 3:06pm Well, I finally had to make an absolutely carefree [smiley=dancin.gif] [smiley=havinablast.gif] FUN [smiley=havinablast.gif] [smiley=dancin.gif] pick! And, if you are going to do so, #2 TE in the 14th round would be the way to spend such a pick, [smiley=yes.gif] and rookie TE Dallas Clark it is! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] The only other league I play in is NOT TE-mandatory, so I had to have Clark in the CBFL! You think former "Boilermaker" FB Mike Alstott is a LOAD :-/ , and RB "A-Train" Anthony Thomas [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] ! Well, then Clark is the B, C, D, E and F trains! This guy is the REAL FULL PayLOAD! From the clips I saw [smiley=threed.gif] of this guy from his college days back in Iowa, I fell in love [smiley=smitten.gif] with him right down to his tough [smiley=MrT.gif] , cool 8) , "maverick-type" [smiley=cowboy.gif] name, "Dallas Clark". I also do not think that he is that bad of a pick. What I am looking/hoping for is what Ken Dilger used to do back in the day when he used to put up [smiley=jammaster.gif] PHAT [smiley=pimpin.gif] stats opposite Pollard. [smiley=yes.gif] And, Pollard does in fact have somewhat of a history of injuries. [smiley=sick.gif] If he sustained a significant injury (which is NOT what I hope for [smiley=nono.gif] ), causing him to lose playing time, Clark would end up being a great pick-up. They typically start two TE's, anyway, in Indy, so Dallas is a "starter", in any event, and, ultimately, I am looking more at that aforementioned Ken Dilger aspect. Anyway, it was my FUN pick! [smiley=shrug.gif] ... Also, as of my pick, since everybody except two of us had already taken his defense and there were like TWO defenses I REALLY liked left, I knew I was assured of getting one of them. They actually both made it past DocNiner's choice of the Titans, so I can tell you right now they are the Colts and Jaguars. I will be flipping a coin to choose one. ;D |

He is former BIG WR that started with the chargers. He acually had a decent year last while only playing 14 games. He ranked 21st amoung TE's in yards and had 3 TD's. I would expect those numbers to increase with a more experienced Harrington and the new west coast offense. I would have taken him as my back-up if BW hadn't chosen him. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jul 8th, 2003, 8:45pm Mikhael Ricks has tons of potential. He is big but has the ability to get open deep. I thought he and Harrington would connect more than they did last year, but with more weapons (read: Charles Rogers) it should open things up for him. He's definitely not one of the top three, but he is in the next tier and I would have taken him ahead of Pollard and Stevens. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Tony_O on Jul 9th, 2003, 1:11am Thats what makes a draft interesting (perception)! I dont need to take another decent TE, I have Tony Gonzalez, a great TE. I know there are others out there better, but I like ,you(STEG), am taking a flyer on somebody. The raiders didnt take him in the second round because they dont want him to see the field. This was a good college WR, who is built like a TE. He very similar to Gonzalez, a two sport star(PF in basketball just like Tony). Being close to Oakland, I have heard a lot of good things about him. I agree that I don't think Roland Williams will play for the raiders again. That means that Teyo will line-up as the 2nd TE. Gannon loves to go to TE's in the red zone and the raiders have the most efficient passing attack in the league, so he is bound to catch some balls. When you look at ESPN's fantasy rankings, they actually have Teyo ranked as the most fantasy appealing rookie TE. I actually believe the cowboys drafted the best TE in the draft Whitten, but I dont like the QB's or the fact that they have 4 TE's on the roster right now. Either way I made a fun pick as well. Who knows I could always have a TE as my swing player? |

Even though Itula Mili was my 2nd TE, I still like him. He was 7th in total receiving yards last season, and that was with the same offense he is in this year. The Seattle offense was the best in the league over the last 1/3 of the season in 2002, so there is plenty of opportunity for him. I believe the Seahawks are getting frustrated with Jerramy Stevens (who may miss games because of league suspension anyway) and his off-field shenanigans. They like Mili's work ethic and attitude. At that juncture, there were only 3 TEs available that I believe an argument could be made for being better than Mili. One of them I had ranked almost the same as Mili, but is in a less prodigious, more one-dimensional offense, and the other two are on new teams. If you're questioning FourTwoOh's pick of Christian Fauria (from another 2 TE team), keep in mind he had 7 TDs last season and Daniel Graham did nothing to distinguish himself. The only one I would question is Teyo Johnson. I think Jolley has firmly implanted himself in the starter's role and I'm not sure how much time Teyo will get, but then again, I haven't been following him or reading about him at all. Maybe Tony_O has the inside scoop... |

He is still a quality TE, but is not as dangerous as he was even two years ago. -Same O-line. No argument. The Titans have a decent O-line and there shouldn't be much change this year. -Same set of WRs minus Dyson. That's where the issue is. Dyson was never a stud, but was a legitimate threat opposite Mason. Despite playing in far fewer games than Mason last year, Dyson had only one less TD reception. Calico probably has more talent than Mason himself, but he won't be the #2 right away (Drew Bennett will) and isn't going to take any defenders away from Mason. Bennett is a decent receiver, but he is better suited as a #3 and while he is starting, you can count on Mason still getting all the defensive attention. Now back to my original argument. Mason is not a steal in the 5th round. He is a solid receiver, sure, but I think calling him a steal is a bit over the top. |

Title: Razz's Post-Draft Rankings Post by Razzak on Jul 9th, 2003, 3:02pm Let's be clear on what I define a "winning" team. 1) Solid all around 2) A top 5 RB (or at least top 5 potential) 3) 3 Deep at RB 4) Depth at WR 5) Decent D/K/TE So I'll go through the teams IMO. 420: Started off great with Ricky, but dropped the ball on QB's. After Warner he *really* should have gotten a decent second QB. As it is, both his QB's could be riding the pine in week 5. Tony: A good all around team, but nothing that says "I will win a championship". Manning is good, but Harrington isn't much of a complement. Tomlinson's super, but Bennett is iffy and I'm not sold on Zereoue. Coles could be great, and I like Morgan, but Rodgers/Wayne don't do anything for me. Gonzo's good, but he overpaid for Akers. Philly: Great QB's, but Portis and Green won't both pan out, and having Duckett as a 3rd RB could be costly if he doesn't step up. The WR's are average at best as I think Gardner will drop off this year. Crumpler and Mili should be ok, although I hope Mili bombs for Jeremy's sake. The Fins are *always* overrated as a defense. Jetdoc: I like this team. McNair/Green should be a great tandem at QB. Green might be a top 7 qb at year's end. Faulk has #1 RB potential and Davis should be ok. Staley is a poor option at #3, but if he holds onto at least 60% of the touches Jetdoc could make a run. Franks/Jones looks good, as jones could rebound this year. DD: I wish this was my team. Holmes/Taylor/Martin should carry him to a championship, provided holmes is healthy. If Holmes sees less touches for some reason DD should still be in the mix. Price is a great pick along with Smith. I think his other WR's are weak but that's his only weakness IMO. If Price/Smith end up in the top 10 this is undoubtedly your champion. Dolfan: Favre/Couch is ok, so is McAllister/George. Taking Moss early hurt his RB depth, but Moss might be able to make up for that throughout the season. Getting Moss and McAllister allowed Dolfan to grab other needs with Philly and McMichael early. A good team that could win it but lacks some RB depth. bgsgfan: Another team that could win it with Alexander, but Garner and Smith have ???'s around them. For some reason I just feel an injury coming for Garner. I don't see the need for Stewart with Hasselbeck and Plummer. WR's look OK. I think they'll all perform lower than their projections but bgsg has enough of them he should be fine. Heap is great and the Ravens are ok. Razzak: I'm pretty disappointed in my RB's picking out of the 8th spot. All the top RB's were gone and I couldn't even get a solid RB with the 3rd slot, settling on Trung. James and Dillon both have top 5 potential, but the odds of either are slimmer than the top 7 RB's drafted. Garcia was a steal and underrated this year and Ramsey/Brunell make this one of the top 3 QB lineups. Brunell only fell so low because of the threat of Leftwich. As my 3rd qb, as long as Brunell contributes one or two weeks he'll be worth it for the round I drafted him in. The WR's are better than I expected and Jackson just might outpace Robinson this year. Even if he doesn't, he'll be close enough that he was very good value considering the round separation between the two. I was happy to get the Panthers where they fell to, as that defense is young and studly. If your draft goes heavy RB, I think #8/9 is the worst spot you can draft from. #10 through 12 aren't much better but do get an earlier pick in the second round. If I had the draft to do over again, there's not much I would change except consider taking Tony G. Even then I'm not sure I would have made the move when I had serious needs elsewhere. DocNiner: Henry/Green looks great with Barlow/Dunn able to pick up the slack on bye weeks. Collins/Johnson/Kitna has something to be desired. Although Johnson should do well, I think Collins and Kitna stink :P. K-Rob might be top 5, or might be the same as previous years. I liked the Pinkston pick, but think people are overvaluing Porter this year. Billy Miller was great. Overall a good team but I am not sure if it can win big, as there's nothing that distinguishes him from the rest. Walker: McNugget is great, but other than that I'm a little disappointed in the roster. Shockey was picked too early, especially considering he gets basically zero red-zone looks. Buccs were a good pick, but Grammatica and Janikowski were a waste. Even if kickers turn out as you project them, it's still only a 30 point difference in best ball, which will probably be about a 10-15 point difference at the end of the year. In best ball, the positions capable of putting up 30 point weeks are more valuable. I like Tiki, but Hearst and Pittman won't be much of a #2. Toomer was way too early although I think McCaffrey was a steal. I was hoping McCaffrey would fall further :). I think Walker had a good idea of locking up a good TE and DEF, but taking Shockey over Gonzo as well as taking the kickers soo early might prove fatal. That, and lack of RB depth. Barnaby: QB's are weak, although I like picking up Hambrick and Shipp as the #3 RB's. I think this team might fall victim to everyone producing at RB, but no one producing well. Harrison/Boston/Keyshawn is probably the best trio in the league, but I think being 4 or 5 deep at WR can make up some of that. Still, not much you can make up for with Harrison. A good team but not one that can win it, IMO. Steg: An interesting "fuck RB's" strategy that I think was ill-advised. Yes, picking out of the 12 spot is rough but when you consider Dillon/Taylor were on the board and he could have come back and got Gannon and Mason anyways, I'm not sure the benefit of Vick/Owens will outweigh the penalty of Stewart/Smith. I think the only true mistake of Steg's draft was selecting Gannon when there were still some good RB's left on the board. Nonetheless, if Bettis has a good year and holds the job or Buckhalter takes 100% of philly's carries, Steg should be competitve and have a chance at a crown. My Pick: DD's team. He needs the least injuries or position battles won of any team and only lacks at WR and DEF. Pennington and Brees are overrated, but being 3 deep at QB with Bledsoe anchoring it should make it just fine. If his WR's step up, look out. Of course, this all rests on Priest having a good preseason (and thus year). If Priest for some reason doesn't play or doesn't get the touches, it's all up in the air. So, to recap, my team excluded from the rankings: 1) DD 2) Jetdoc 3) bgsg |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 9th, 2003, 7:25pm With my final pick of the draft I took Brian Finneran. This gives me both starting WR's for the Falcons. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I figured in best ball format it would probably be a good thing. Overall, I am very happy with my team. I expect to finish in the top 5 based on my RB corp and QB play. Bledsoe, Pennington, and Brees are a solid QB tamdem. All above average QB;s who in best ball format I expect one to step up every week. Curtis Martin, Priest Holmes, Fred Taylor, and Mike Allstott are very good RB corp. All injury prone, but I took the gamble. Allstott could be a great pick up with that pathetic RB corp in Tampa. If nothing else, I should get some TD's. Definitely one of the top two RB corps in the league. My WR corp leaves something to be desired, but they are decent enough. Price, Rod Smith, Josh Reed, and Brian Finneran. The last two could have decent years. In addition, I have both of the Falcons WR's. In best ball, it should work out. TE-- Jolley and Wycheck. About the same as everyone else who doesn't have Heap, Gonzalez, or Shockey. K- Mike Hollis and Rian Lindell. They are kickers, who the hell cares. D-- Patriots. This may be a stretch pick. But I am trusting in their rookies and in Bill Bellicheck.(sp) |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jul 9th, 2003, 10:42pm All-in-all... a good draft. It went fairly quickly, although I can't count the times where I was waiting for someone to make a pick - I could see they were online and I kept refreshing the page because I just knew the next time the pick would appear... Only a couple mild surprises in the whole thing. I thought for sure LaMont Jordan would be grabbed. I chose Williams just because of the TDs (and now an injury to Bennett can only help) otherwise Jordan was right there for me. I also thought someone would grab the Cowboys defense, although I had them ranked 9th overall, so they were borderline. And I thought Javon Walker would get taken too... If I have some time at work tomorrow I'll do a team-by-team analysis too so anyone I've been critical of will have an opportunity to rip me. [smiley=coach.gif] |

Title: [hr]Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Jul 10th, 2003, 1:06pm I decided to do a "BEST OF"/"WORST OF" list instead of rating each team. Feel free to comment positively (or negatively if you really have to, although my analysis should prove irrefutable). BEST QBs: 1. StegRock - Vick and Gannon have every aspect of QB scoring covered. BEST RBs: 1. DirkDiggler - Solid top to bottom. DD's #4 RB (Alstott) will be better than many #2 RBs on other teams. BEST WRs: 1. FourTwoOh - Two of the top 5 overall in Moulds & Burress. Lots of solid depth. BEST TEs: 1. Walker Boh - Shockey has to score more than 2x this year and Conwell will be the #1 option for a team that uses its TEs. BEST D/ST: 1. StegRock - Jacksonville. Not the best D by far... but they were the best value of all the Ds taken. BEST PKs: 1. Walker Boh - Gramatica is among the tops every year and Janko will have some very big weeks (and some very small ones, but he is #2 on the team). WORST QBs: 1. FourTwoOh - There is a good chance that he will be getting zero points at QB for a good amount of the season. WORST RBs: 1. Walker Boh - Only has one sure starter on the team in Tiki. WORST WRs: 1. (Tie) Tony_O & DirkDiggler - Tony_O has some nice depth, but Coles is an unknown in Washington and Morgan has only had once decent year and could get caught in a numbers game and QB controversy. DirkDiggler is banking on Price picking up where he left off last year, although handcuffing Finneran helps some. WORST TEs: 1. Razzak - Jerramy Stevens may miss games due to league suspension or jail time. Kyle Brady has to worry when the Jags bring back Johnnie Mitchell to challenge him. WORST D/ST: 1. BarnabyWilde - The Raiders will get a ton of turnovers which will help, but they'll most likely give up more yardage and points than last year which will kill in this scoring system. WORST PKs: 1. DirkDiggler - Tough to determine the worst, but when your #1 K isn't even assured a spot on the team (he's battling with Matt Bryant). BEST TEAM: 1. DirkDiggler - RBs win FF Championships, and he's got the best group, especially after hearing reports of good health for Priest. While weak at WR and PK, he's got the rest of the horses he needs. 2. DocNiner52 - Only true hole on his roster is WR after K-Rob. Watch out for him if any of the other 3 WRs make good. WORST TEAM: 1. FourTwoOh - It's tough to pick first or last... The QB situation is deadly and only one sure thing at RB, with very, very questionable #3 and #4 RBs will put FourTwoOh in the cellar. 2. StegRock - Like I mentioned earlier, RBs win the titles, and Steg won't have enough points to compete. |

Once again, generally speaking, I concur that my running back strategy was probably ill-advised. But, I have pithily explained on this thread my rationale. Point being, picking out of the 12-hole is BRUTAL and the MOST significant factor here. You're kind of destined to have more of an "average" positional lineup, moreover, if you go RB with the first two picks, rather than a "studs-and-upswingers" lineup, which is what's better in "crystal ball, best ball". I tried my best to achieve the latter out of a "hole" that is not conducive to that. As a result, my RB corps (apparently) suffered. If I went RB over Owens or Vick, I would have had a "run-of-the-mill" top guy (oxymoron intended). The unexpected bone thrown in this was that Gannon fell as far as he did. Ultimately, though, I have my reservations about Gannon this year, as others evidently do too based on his falling the way he did, and I REALLY wanted Vick, who I think will be this year's TOP point-getter, hands down. But, I digress from this opening digression. I have a question, to be taken as open or rhetorical. I have to ask it because I perceived that the Mason pick through the Jamel White pick was where I "saved" my team. You (reasonably) state, Razz, "I think the only true mistake of Steg's draft was selecting Gannon when there were still some good RB's left on the board." Don't get me wrong here! This is a reasonable assertion on face value that I think many of you have/had. My question is... After Stewart, what other running back was taken before my next selections that was that much better, if better at all, than Emmitt... or Bettis for that matter? A-Little Train that could for one season, Done, Staley, Stacey [smiley=hooters.gif] ? [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] Perhaps, Barlow and Hambrick,... but not by much! But, hey, that's the beautiful thing about the CBFL! I mean keep up the fantastic opining because it makes for good reading (I mean that sincerely [smiley=yes.gif] ). I can't wait to see Jetdoc's and anyone else's. I may even have my hand at it. But, all these editorial write-ups right now are just that, opining editorials that is. This sucker will be played out without ANY other factors coming into play. Whereas, in other "regular" leagues, these types of write-ups may have "more value" as teams potentially change dramatically throughout the season, so perceptions that you walk away from draft day with may tend to stick in your head a little more seemingly substantively. I personally loved this draft because everyone(well, almost everyone) seemed to know what the hell they were doing and had a strategy. Walker Boh had a good strategy of getting the best players at the most positions. My strategy was to screw others as much as possible by taking running backs quickly and taking my 3rd QB before some people had 2. Others went with best player on the board, and yet others went with positional needs. It was a great mix and great draft. As Philly stated, no one really slipped in the cracks. The guys I was hoping to snag in later rounds were taken by others right before me. I look foward to watching this thing unfold. And I dread the day that all my running backs are declared out for the season. I was interested to see all the late round players. What I am talking about is the "substantive predictive" value of these write-ups. The predictions become moot as this sucker gets played out "as is". That having been said, they're FUN to read! Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by FourTwoOh on Aug 9th, 2003, 1:35pm While I may have taken the Cyrstal Bong, err, Ball part of it a bit too much to heart, I remain quite confident in my team. It's always the strong silent types you need to watch out for. :P ;D |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Tony_O on Aug 9th, 2003, 1:41pm Well I keep putting up posts because the individuals who talked all the shit about me selecting him havn't had the balls to respond with "maybe I spoke too soon" or "maybe it wasn't such a bad pick" :D ;D [smiley=crystalball.gif] [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] |

Two words (of wisdom) for you, Tony, "preseason"... [smiley=tired.gif] and "rookie"... [smiley=newbie.gif] During the regular season, this guy's going to be competing for balls with Rice, Porter, Brown, Garner, Jolley and even Wheatley and Fargas. [smiley=ohshit.gif] I suppose if Jolley gets injured, he will be a factor. If Gannon gets injured, Marques Tuiasosopo will be too. Can't predict or depend on that kind of stuff, though. From an NFL/"real" football perspective, Teyo's evidently a great pick. But, from a "fantasy" football perspective,... well, we'll see, but the guy will be lucky to catch for 250, and any touchdowns are just unpredictable gravy. [smiley=shrug.gif] Now, I'll hand the baton off to Philly... |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Tony_O on Aug 9th, 2003, 4:46pm I appreciate your response.............I just wanted to get some fantasy conversation going..........We will see how he procduces on the field during the regular season, but if your eyes havn't opened enough to see his potential for this season, then you should keep watching. I'm not saying he is going to be a top 10 TE, but I think you guys have under estimated him. He was the only player the raiders coach mentioned at halftime. He will produce more numbers than some of other TE's drafted. I agree that his yards might not get up more than 200, but I would be willing to bet that he scores atleast 1 TD this year. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Aug 9th, 2003, 6:26pm First, Tony, thanks for trying to inspire discussion, especially on a bit of a slow day. [smiley=bow.gif] I REALLY appreciate that! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] As for Teyo, I will grant you this. What the coaches are saying about him is VERY reminiscent of the way we ALL speak of Tony Gonzalez. It appears that he brings a similar set of tools to the table. |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Philly on Aug 10th, 2003, 11:56am I was wondering where I had said anything disparaging about Teyo Johnson, Tony_O, because you really seem to be offended by whatever it was I said to be bringing it back up at this point. Well, I dug around in this thread and here is what I said. on 07/09/03 at 08:29:57, Philly wrote:
I'm sorry it cut you so deeply. I'll have to take back all of those scathing, offensive things I said as he is clearly going to put up the best numbers a rookie TE, hell, rookie player, has ever done - at least based on the fact that the coaches said something nice about him. It's hard to believe that I was so critical and unfair in my assessment of Teyo. Unfortunately I still have not been able to see any Raiders games to see his immense talent for myself. I can listen to coach-speak all day long and still not know anything definitive (case in point, the Eagles coaches would like you to believe that Freddie Mitchell is setting the world on fire with his training camp practices...). I still don't think the Raiders are going to run many 2-TE sets, and if they don't, then I still believe that Doug Jolley will be out there a majority of the time... but then again, as a wise man once said, I haven't been following him or reading about him at all. Maybe Tony_O has the inside scoop... [smiley=bow.gif] [smiley=bow.gif] [smiley=bow.gif] on 08/09/03 at 16:46:18, Tony_O wrote:
I'd be very surprised if his numbers even put him in the top 5 of Rookie TEs this year. I know the Eagles' #2 TE, LJ Smith, will have much better numbers than Teyo... [smiley=boxer.gif] |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by Tony_O on Aug 10th, 2003, 12:45pm First of all Philly............offend I never was......Just trying to stir the pot.....and with a chance to involve two of the best members of our fine forum....Steg and Philly.....How could I pass it up? You can see that Steg tries to do the same thing with his Running Back updates for the CBFL. As far as Teyo is concerned.........Your right about Smith, THIS YEAR, he will have more opportunities, they cant wait to send Lewis packing and give this kid all the reps. However, I believe that Teyo could be better in the long term. It wasn't just his coach talking about him either.....every NFL insider that has visited training camp has raved about Teyo's ability. You can see from the posts Fanball, ESPN, etc. Don't forget that Jolley wasn't a highly drafted or ranked TE, he just made the most out of the TE injuries the Raiders had last season. He was once BEHIND Roland Williams(enough said). |

Not a problem Tony_O... ;) ... I was just stirring your already-stirred pot a bit more. Quote:
The only "they" that wants to send Chad Lewis packing are Eagles' fans. Andy Reid and Brad Childress love this guy, regardless of his diminishing ability. The Eagles did see how the Bucs last year completely disrupted the Eagles defense by playing a 2-TE set almost exclusively in the Championship game. The Eagles would like to be able to do that this year as well. Quote:
The point is that Jolley took advantage of those opportunities and made the most of them. And he will continue to do so unless (as Steg mentioned) he is injured. I was pretty intrigued by Teyo at draft time (http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1044060055) and was hoping the Eagles would take him in the 2nd round (this is when the word coming from the Eagles was that LJ Smith was going to be their #1 choice if they stayed at their original position). |

Title: Re: Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread for the CBFL Post by StegRock on Aug 14th, 2003, 9:29pm Ya' know I got to thinkin'... Since Tony is SO confident about Teyo, we could make it... [smiley=boxer.gif] The "Dallas Clark - Vishante Shiancoe - Teyo Johnson" Showdown [smiley=boxer.gif] Same basic rules... Last place is OUT of the CBFL next year. Moreover, if the winner of our "challenge" here finishes in the bottom 3 in the CBFL and the loser of our "challenge" finishes in the top 9, the winner gets the loser's spot in the CBFL. If the winner of our "challenge" does not need that benefit, it becomes available to the guy who came in second in our "challenge". So, whatchya's think? Are you down with it, BW? Are you "game", Mr. O? [smiley=cantcatch.gif] |
