Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by DirkDiggler on Jul 27th, 2003, 6:49pm Well...not too surprising the first 3 picks were Tomlinson, Portis, and Williams. I think they are interchangable as far as ranking. I would of put Priest Holmes as #3, but questions regarding health and contract made me let him fall a little lower. |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by StegRock on Jul 27th, 2003, 8:26pm Well, "passing" on a RB, a QB taken in the top 10, a respite from the "RB run"! [smiley=zenmaster.gif] ;D I, for one, think that Vick will lead the league this year in fantasy points in most systems. That having been said, based on the "theory of relativity" (of everything in the world), the RB's who went before him should have. So far, so good! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Let's keep up the good work! Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by DOLFAN on Jul 28th, 2003, 12:01pm I'm not certain this list in going in the manner that Stegey intended it to. I'm refering to the top 100 idea i mean in regards to at which pick a guy should go at. Comon Brett Favre before Jeff Garcia?? Martin and Fred Taylor before Ahman Green? Who's next MIchael Bennett? Well at least i followed in the same train of thought. This is turning out to be a bit more of "where i hope/think" a player will produce. |

Jeff Garcia? You mean the guy whose back is so bad he needs an epidural just to practice part time? Ahman Green? I think through the first 1/3 of this draft, everyone is doing an excellent job of making picks. Yes, I was a bit surprised that Brett Favre was taken at pick #31 (mid-way through the 3rd round in a 12 team redraft). But I'd have trouble shooting down any argument explaining why he belongs there. |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by junkyardjake on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:02pm Hey Guys, I think the ranking is progressing well, even the TJ Duckett pick isn't really that outlandish if you think about it. He's second-string to midget Warrick Dunn, who can't possibly endure an entire season starting, and he will get easy TD plunges in what looks to be a fairly improved offense. As far as Ahman Green going after Curtis Martin, why not ? Green has had only a few good seasons, while Martin has been a stud for just about his entire career. Throw in the fact that they are about the same age, and it's not unreasonable to believe that Martin is due for a bounce-back season and Green will continue to underperform. Anyway, I think everyone's doing a good job, I agree this should not represent a carbon-copy of the same boiler-plate cheat-sheet you see everywhere. (So long as noone picks something crazy like Barry Sanders or Cris Carter, remember, those guys are playing shuffleboard now). JYJ :^) |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by Philly on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:14pm I have a question for ya Steg... We are using the CBFL scoring system for this Huddle, correct? Is it safe to assume, then, that NO defenses will be taken since even a solid defensive effort by a top Team D could result in negative scores? Just wondered if that was your intent for this Top 100 list... |

|
Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by Philly on Jul 28th, 2003, 2:16pm Also, the Duckett pick wasn't awful. I think we'll see much better numbers from TJ this season. Granted, he probably went a bit earlier than I would have taken him, but then again, what do I know... I just grabbed a platoon back (in Barlow) myself... |

I agree with the sentiment there 100%, but I have to make a correction on point #2 of yours, brother. Curtis Martin is 30; Ahman Green is only 26. That's a significant age difference. on 07/28/03 at 14:14:35, Philly wrote:
First, using the CBFL system is supposed to just be a "very loose" guideline. Point being, we are drafting according to a generic cumulative-points, performance scoring system. I kind of just meant to offer up the CBFL as an example of that. Regarding your query about defenses specifically, don't just compare total points generated across the positions. "It's ALL relative", right? You have to compare defenses to other defenses and consider the differential, not just merely compare them alongside other positions as if they were all scored similarly. Defenses are very valuable, but scored in such a totally different way than QB's, RB's, WR's, and TE's that you just can't merely compare them side-by-side. You have to look at the differentials/deviations. I, for one, can see at least one defense's points differential compared to other defenses meriting its being selected in the top 100. [smiley=shrug.gif] I do not see the same for kickers, though. The deviations are just too small and the category is just not worth that much. |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by junkyardjake on Jul 28th, 2003, 5:53pm Steg, That's a good point, I didn't realize that Curtis had reached the 30 year mark. But to put that into perspective, Priest Holmes and Marshall Faulk are both 30, Emmit Smith had 1,400 yards and 11 TD's in the season he turned 30 and Ahman Green played last year like he was 36. (And did you just pick 50 year old Jerry Rice ?) JYJ :^) |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by StegRock on Jul 28th, 2003, 7:34pm I don't disagree with you. I was just clarifying a fact. I will see ya in the Superbowl too. I agree that injuries are issues, but he still puts up the stats yr in and yr out. Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by junkyardjake on Jul 28th, 2003, 9:10pm Dolfan, I just mean 'underperforming' against his expectations, there is no doubt Green is a fine player, but his TD's have declined for the last three years. Plus, you have to wonder if Favre and his mediocre receivers can really keep defenses honest like the Packers teams of previous years. JYJ :^) |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by Bob_Oswego on Jul 28th, 2003, 9:47pm The problem with Ahman Green is that the pack do not have enough weapons therfore defences key on Green Believe it or not the Jets have more possession type of personell (Chrebet, Becht, Conway, Jordan etc) and with Penniongton a little more mobile than Favre, Martin will produce better numbers assuming both stay healthy |

Jerry Porter? :-/ Eh, he's being overrated. His real breakout season will probably be next year. Still, his continued progress this year will probably just open up the field more for Rice. Jake, Phil, I appreciate whence you guys are coming. Here's what I don't like about the T. J. When I make my picks, I consider, all things equal, whether or not I would trade the guy I am about to pick for other guys who would/should be ranked around that given area. I just look at T. J. Duckett and think I would NOT trade him "straight-up" and all things equal for the guy I just chose with the 73rd pick, Brad Johnson. Would you... all things equal? I can see Duckett's going ahead of Warrick Dunn, but, ultimately, Duckett should have gone around the area Dunn went, i.e., they should be in the same tier. His going 37th puts him into a higher tier he really does not belong in. |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by junkyardjake on Jul 29th, 2003, 3:39pm Steg, I agree that Duckett went too high, although it could turn out that he is completely worth a pick at 37. That said, I wouldn't have picked either Duckett or Johnson that high. Obviously, one of the keys to successful drafting is having an idea about where a player is valued before the season. If this was a real draft, and you liked Duckett, you could have waited till probably the 6th or 7th round to grab him. This would free up a spot for a more coveted player and leave you with a stronger team. In the case of Johnson, I agree he never gets an even break. Every year there is reason to let him drop into the late rounds, and every year he turns out to be a value pick. However, I just hate spending early picks on QB's, because after McNabb, Manning, Culpepper, Brooks and, this years darling, Vick, there are like 10 guys who will perform about the same. So getting Johnson at 73 is good deal, but drafting him at 37 probably isn't the best choice either, IMO. JYJ :^) |

As I pointed out in my message, I wouldn't have taken Duckett that early - probably around 45-50ish or so would be more appropriate (as you pointed out with Dunn - but I wouldn't take Dunn at 52 either). But you really can't compare it to taking a QB - they're apples and oranges. Duckett has a much bigger upside than Warrick Dunn for even this year. The Falcon offense should be improved and the addition of Price on the outside could open up more running lanes for the younger, better Duckett. |

Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by StegRock on Jul 30th, 2003, 1:04pm Ya's know... I was thinkin' 'bout that David Akers pick again. After much deliberation, I personally have come to the conclusion that it's actually not that bad of a pick at all, AND it also showed me that my evaluation of picks like the one I made for the pick of Duckett based on "trade value all things equal" as I said in my critique before was flawed, or at least incomplete. I still don't like Duckett that high, but what I presented should not be the one and only deciding factor, which is how I presented it. It's like Philly said, in reply to that critique of mine, about not comparing dudes across positions like that, which I too have even intimated, but from a different angle. Let's take a further look at that pick of Akers in that light. I would very seldom if ever make a trade for a kicker or even one with a kicker involved even as just a throw-in or something. So, Akers' trade value, in this respect, is nil. HOWEVER, looking at our list, there is a VERY good chance I would take him in a draft over guys like Kennison and Moe Williams (in a GBRFL-type set-up), and even some of the others in your more "typical" set-up. So, again, all-in-all, an EXCELLENT JOB,... all, and THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping out! [smiley=bow.gif] IMPORTANT... One final note, is there any consideration to take this further, say on to a Top 150? Or, do we just (count our blessings for the avid participation we had and) let this rest where it is now, at a nice and tidy Top 100 finished in a quick three days, basically (actually less than 72 hours), and prepare ourselves for the "commencement announcement" of the GBRFL2 (the next big event on the plate), which will, alas, be comin' at ya's later today or tomorrow? ;D |

|
Title: Re: "Huddle Top 100" Commentary Thread Post by Philly on Jul 30th, 2003, 9:21pm I think 100 is enough. If we try to go to 150 we'll start making some really ugly picks. As far as Akers is concerned, using the CBFL scoring and last year's stats, Akers scored more points than a lot of the other players picked ahead of him. So if you're looking at it strictly from a total points perspective, there might have been more PKs picked. |
