Title: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by pezzuti66 on Jan 17th, 2004, 4:22am I am a member of a long-running league (14 years) and I recently became co-Commissioner. The league has historically paid a rather generous fee to the Commissioners, and a portion of the league has never liked this. I have been looking for info on various leagues and if they pay the commish and if so how much. If as many of you as possible can simply tell me how your league handles this I would appreciate it. If it was my league I would end the fee but I don't have the power yet. Thanks The Rookies |

Title: Re: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by Walker Boh on Jan 17th, 2004, 11:52am Most fantasy leagues on the net charge fees, so it would make sense that private league commissioners receive funding as well. I helped do the scoring in the GBRFL2 league here at the Gridiron this past season, and although I did enjoy it, I considered it "work" (and the scoring was just a small part of what our commisssioner, StegRock, had to do to keep the league running smoothly). You will soon find out just how tough being commissioner can be (especially if there's money involved) and you might change your tune with a little "hands on" experience. Some people, like BarnabyWilde (above) and StegRock, enjoy the work and do it for free, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to be paid for their time and effort. I consider myself extremely lucky to play in a top-notch fantasy league for free, and I would gladly pay to play. My advice to you would be, try things out before rushing to judgement... you may want some cash after all! Good luck and welcome to the Gridiron. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] |

Title: Re: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by StegRock on Mar 22nd, 2004, 6:28pm It really depends on how much effort your commissioner puts into it and what the specific context is. In the GBRFL, the awards are VERY NICE plaques, not cash prizes, for "1st Place", "2nd Place" and "3rd Place" (no playoffs) and "Coach/GM of the Year", and I do A LOT. I charge $40 per team to cover the various expenses, which range from the plaques to the boards that I make for draft day, including all the printer ink I use up, to a consideration for the long-distance phone calling I make throughout the year to all that goes into the web site, time, effort and cash, to etc., etc. Whatever I can save on any of the costs the guys do not question (which isn't that much, but it is usually a little scratch for me) and they typically do not ask me to pay for a thing during our big "Summer Meeting & Draft" day, which we do at a sports bar and after which we usually head out for the night to a place like Dave & Buster's. Hundreds of dollars are spent that night, but they cover me. Thanks, fellow GBRFLers! [smiley=bow.gif] That kind of "informal" give-and-take seems to me to be the best way of going about it if that's possible. In a vacuum, where a league commissioner just does the "basics", I would say that about 10 bucks per player is about right. |

Title: Re: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by pezzuti66 on Mar 28th, 2004, 2:09am Well, it's a big $$$ league. The total pot at the end of the year is usually over 8k. We spend a couple hundred and have a mid-year party, pay the commissioner, and the rest goes to the winners and the high scorer each week. The rule used to be that the commish got 10%, but we capped it at 6 bills a few years back. I am now going to be one of the two commissioners and I am pushing to go online with the league. Since I totally engross myself in football I don't care if I get paid. I just think that the commissioners have always been way way way overpaid. |

Title: Re: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by Philly on Mar 28th, 2004, 9:30am Just get a subscription to RTSports or another league hosting service (for much much less than 6 bills)... then there will be more prize money at the end of the year. Or take the extra money and distribute it another way... a certain amount for highest one-week team score, highest one-week player score, best year for a rookie player, etc.... something to get more people involved. |

Those are dollar amounts I am not accustomed to. If he was calculating ALL the games by himself by hand, that is A LOT of painstaking work. But, on the other hand, all things considered, given the technology of the day, yes, 600 to 800 bucks for someone who does not even provide a unique web site for your league sounds like TOO MUCH! |

Title: Re: Need info on Commissioners Fees Post by bgsgfan on Mar 28th, 2004, 12:06pm Every situation is different, however I feel $600 is way too much in general. I'd look to lighten the commish's work-load by using an on-line service and also lighten up the payday as well. Personally, I have never been part of a league that paid the commishioner more than the cost of on-line hosting. On the other hand, I have never been part of a league that aproached that kind of $$$ ($150 per team is the largest I have ever been involved in), so what do I know? |
