Title: Philly's Mock NFL Draft, version 1.1
Post by Philly on Jan 27th, 2004, 12:39pm
[smiley=thumbsup.gif]Here's a newer, post-Senior Bowl version.  As always, thoughts and discussion are welcomed!

     #            TEAM            PLAYER            POS.            SCHOOL            COMMENTS
1            Chargers            Eli Manning            QB            Mississippi            This is the franchise QB that Leaf and Brees were not.
2            Raiders            Larry Fitzgerald            WR            Pittsburgh            Pairs with Jerry Porter to form a formidable WR corps.
3            Cardinals            Ben Roethlisberger            QB            Miami (OH)            Did he play for more fans in college than he will in AZ?
4            Giants            Robert Gallery            OT            Iowa            Gallery could be the best player in the NFL draft, period.
5            Redskins            Kellen Winslow, Jr.            TE            Miami            Gibbs begins his second tour with an outstanding TE.
6            Lions            Sean Taylor            S            Miami            Lions needed lots of help in the defensive secondary.
7            Falcons*            Chris Gamble            CB            Ohio St.            There's no risk with Gamble, he has great size and speed.
8            Browns*            Shawn Andrews            OT            Arkansas            Browns may also trade up to #2 to grab Roethlisberger.
9            Jaguars            Roy Williams            WR            Texas            Gives Leftwich a young WR to grow with.
10            Texans            Tommie Harris            DT            Oklahoma            Texans desperately need help on their defensive line.
11            Steelers            Stephen Jackson            RB            Oregon St.            Cowher grabs best overall RB in the draft.
12            Jets            Reggie Williams            WR            Wash. St.            Takes over for the disappointing Curtis Conway.
13            Bills            Kenechi Udeze            DE            USC            Big pass rusher improves an already-impressive defense.
14            Bears            Vince Wilfork            DT            Miami            Clogs the middle and makes Urlacher more effective.
15            Buccaneers            Kevin Jones            RB            Virginia Tech            Quality RB falls to the Bucs.
16            49ers            DeAngelo Hall            CB            Virginia Tech            Very fast, very aggressive, but smallish and a bit raw still.
17            Bengals            DJ Williams            LB            Miami            Puts the Bengals into the play-offs in 2004.
18            Saints            Derrick Strait            CB            Oklahoma            Tremendous CB fills a weak-spot for the Saints.
19            Vikings            Will Smith            DE            Ohio St.            Increased pass rush helps entire defense.
20            Dolphins            Philip Rivers            QB            NC State            Played himself into the #3 overall QB position.
21            Patriots**            Greg Jones            RB            Florida St.            Monster RB has climbed the charts recently.
22            Cowboys            Nat Dorsey            OT            Georgia Tech            Will open plenty of holes for a new Cowboys RB.
23            Seahawks            Antwan Odom            DE            Alabama            Big pass rush specialist fills big need for Seahawk D.
24            Broncos            Michael Clayton            WR            LSU            Broncos surprised he fell this far, grabs best player available.
25            Packers            JP Losman            QB            Tulane            Another strong-armed, mobile Bayou QB heads north.
26            Rams            Vernon Carey            OG            Miami            Versatile lineman adds strength to weakening offensive line.
27            Titans            Karlos Dansby            LB            Auburn            Fills an area of need for the Titans, who don't have many.
28            Eagles            Randy Starks            DT            Maryland            Eagles miss out on Dansby, but get a big plugger in the middle.
29            Colts            Darnell Dockett            DT            Florida St.            Athletic DT will join Freeney to form a very fast defensive line.
30            Chiefs            Rashaun Woods            WR            Oklahoma St.            Despite needs on defense, Chiefs can't pass him up.
31            Panthers***            Michael Jenkins            WR            Ohio St.            Big WR will be nice complement to Steve Smith.
32            Patriots***            Chris Snee            OG            BC            Local kid makes good.  Mean OG could start as a rookie.

Great job.  A few general thoughts:

First, I do not think the Redskins will takea TE.  They need way too much D-line help.
I see them taking Udeze or Tommie Harris.

Second, why do you have Stephen Jackson over Kevin Jones?  Every report I have seen has Jones going first.  I am especially surprised because I think Jones fits Pittsburghs style better.

Third, this draft looks good for keepers.  4 QBs, 3 RB, and lots of WR especially versus last year when the top RB taken wasn't even going to play and the other one was stuck behind Priest Holmes.

I honestly thought they would grab one of the RBs available, but word from the Senior Bowl indicated a ton of interest in Winslow.  I personally wouldn't do it, but apparently Gibbs wants a pass-catching TE (certainly a need).  And the draft is very deep with DTs (might be the best position along with WR), so they can get a stud in the second round.

Many people feel that Stephen Jackson is the better RB.  He is bigger and probably more durable over the long haul.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, JP Losman, and one more QB end up starting in the NFL in the next few years.  There are some seriously good WRs in this draft too.  Then you have 3-4 starting RBs in this draft as well, though it isn't really a position of strength this year.

Not a bad mock draft, about the same as all the others out there.

Some notes from myself.
1. Larry Fitzgerald won't be pairing with Joey Porter because Joey doesn't play WR, he's a OLB for the Steelers.

2. J.P. Losman probably won't be a first round pick and the same can be said for Phillip Rivers.

3. For some odd reason I think the Chargers are going to trade the #1 over all pick. I just have a feeling about that.

4. Norv Turner is going to pass on Fitzgerald and go for Roethlisberger, he like to develop young QB's

5. I think Winslow may end up with the Redskins because they can't stretch the middle of the field.

I too think the Chargers will trade the pick.  This is based on nothing but hunch.  Marty is a coach on a short leash.  I do not think he can stick around for a young QB to develop.  The likely trade canidate?  My guess is the Cards.  They will move up two spots to take Manning.

My bad... Jerry Porter.

One of the two will go in the first round.  They might not be the most appealing QBs around, but there are so many teams that need one.  I think the Dolphins are very high on Rivers, but chances are that he won't be around when they pick in round 2.

I didn't include any trades in the mock.  They're just too difficult to predict.  But the Bolts have a bunch of needs and could trade down.  It's very tough to predict the 1st pick this year because the Chargers (if they stay put) need a QB, a WR, some O-linemen, some more defense...

Here's a rumor for you... Oakland dumps Gannon next year (he is too expensive) and signs Mark Brunell.  Norv Turner was one of the proponents of the Brunell-to-Miami talk before he took the job in Oakland.

I think they have bigger needs than TE... If I was Joe Gibbs, I'd seriously look at Kenechi Udeze, one of the RBs, or even Sean Taylor.
