Title: 2004 NFL Draft - Profile DISCUSSIONS
Post by Philly on Mar 11th, 2004, 6:02pm
Over the next few weeks, Barnaby Wilde and myself will be posting a number of profiles of players likely to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft.

For the sake of convenience and appearance of threads, please post all discussion regarding the posted profiles in this thread.  Feel free to provide more insight on players we've profiled or criticize our projections--it's all good.

If you would like us to post a profile of a particular player, please send an instant message to either of us and we will be more than happy to do so.

Alright... I've got three profiles up now.  Barnaby Wilde and I have split the list we have, so both of us will be contributing to every position.  They will be growing over the next month or so leading up to the draft.  Once again, we invite discussion about the players -- just please confine it to this thread and don't post in the others for appearance's sake.

More players are up.  Look for there to be at least one player from every position by tomorrow.  Again, if you have any special requests, please let BarnabyWilde or me know.

Also, if anyone can lend further insight into the players being profiled, go right ahead.

Really good stuff here Philly, I appreciate it!

About Will Smith, you noted that
Quote:
Smith is also criticized for being a non-emotional player.  He goes out and follows the game plan and does his job (effectively, I might add) without question.  He might be considered methodical and professional in his approach.  But if he played with a bit more emotion, he might be able tap into some previously undiscovered abilities and really be a beast on the field.
I'll reiterate what you said and add that when he did get aggressive, he was a total beast.  In a few key games, he would simply take over.  He never disappointed me (as an Ohio State fan), however I did find myself wishing he would show that fire more often.   Make no mistake though, Will Smith is not a "combine" guy, he is a pure football player and has shown, on occasion, that he can bring the entire package.

Thanks for the insight bgsg... I am still a little bit uncertain about his abilities translating to the NFL.  It is probably just a personal bias on my part to the big DE.  I prefer a Reggie White type of DE to a Charles Haley type.  Both were very effective at what they did, so both styles work in the NFL and Will Smith is getting bigger, so maybe he will have success.

The Virginia Tech Pro Day today (3/18) was a very important one.

First off, Kevin Jones did not look good.  He ran 3 forties, all in the 4.6 range.  Rumor had it that he was going to run in the 4.3 range.  His other drills were nothing to write home about.  It's very likely that he will no longer be regarded as the #1 RB in the draft - relinquishing that role to Steven Jackson.

Secondly, DeAngelo Hall may have assured himself of the #1 CB selection in the draft.  He didn't run the 40, choosing instead to stand on his 4.35 at the combine.  He did run the short shuttle in 3.68.  By comparison, Michael Boulware (Florida St.) received a lot of hype for being the first player to post a time in under 4 seconds at 3.98.  Hall also is reported to have looked very good in position drills.

While it would be irresponsible and naive to think that a player's NFL potential can be determined by running a 40 and a couple cone drills, it does sway teams quite a bit.  That's why Anquan Boldin dropped well into the second round last year after running a slow 40, but still proved to be the best rookie WR in 2003.

I for one don't put much stock in 40 times. I am a big Va Tech fan, so I watch them alot and saw KJ play often. The dude can  flat out run, especially when it comes to game day. He may be the second back taken, but he'll be a stud for somebody.

I have not yet chimed in here.  This area is not really my forte, as some of you may know, so specific commentary from me would be of little value.  But, in any event, I want to thank both of you, Jeff and Jim, for your efforts here.  You guys are doing a hell of a job and, as such, making a GREAT substantive contribution to the site! University of Texas WR Roy Williams ran the forty again at his pro day.

Some felt that his stock slipped when he measured in 2 inches shorter and about 15-20 pounds lighter than they expected at the combine.

Now he runs a 4.37 at his pro day and suddenly everyone is talking about him again.  (I guess I'm included.)

Winslow is the next great TE. He has some growing up to do...attitude wise. Perspective wise too i guess, but he will be one hell of a great TE. He must go to the right team though. He is the cream of the crop. I think/hope he goes to DET. He will be used properly there.
Daunte Hall is a great player too.
You guys have done a very good job of your assessments.

I read an interesting piece concerning Winslow.  He hasn't chosen an agent yet.  At the combine, his father (HoFer Kellen Winslow) told agents that they would have to pay a fee present their offers to him.  (The NFLPA said that the agents couldn't pay as this would be considered an inducement to service.)  Now he said he will wait until after the draft to decide on an agent.  The thinking here is that he wants to sign the Postons (who are the idiots behind the Lavar Arrington fiasco and the Orlando Pace negotiations and Ian Gold and Ty Law... etc.).  Anyway, the Redskins have NO desire to deal with the Postons any more, but Winslow would like to be drafted (#5 overall) by the Skins.  He feels that the Skins will pass on him if they know he is represented by Carl Poston.

If I was a team, I wouldn't be interested in drafting Kellen Winslow II.  If I was in dire need of a TE, I would trade down and grab Ben Troupe or Ben Watson (who will probably be available in the second round).  I'd be getting a very good TE without all the "issues" that Winslow will bring to the team.

This is really an impressive piece of work and I for one appreciate it.  If others are like me, the lack of comments are due to a lack of knowledge, not interest.  I have found the profiles for the players I do know to be right on the mark, and have used the profiles for others to get a small handle on them.

Thanks for the kind words.  It's a lot of work, but I enjoy it and think I will enjoy the draft even more having done all the work.

Stay tuned, there will be more profiles coming as we draw nearer to draft day.

OK boys and girls.  We've got two days until the draft and I think I'm done with the player profiles (unless there is someone you want to see - by all means, ask, and I'll be happy to get something up tomorrow or early Saturday morning).  [smiley=deal.gif]

89 players profiled in total.  [smiley=howtoput.gif]  We hope you enjoyed the work we did - we certainly enjoyed doing it and look to expand on it even more next year.

In fact, the reason you haven't seen BarnabyWilde around much is that he is in negotiations with ESPN to take over for Mel Kiper next season.  Apparently people find Mel's hair [smiley=elvis.gif] just TOO distracting, so they want to get someone with no distracting hair http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/images/JimODell.jpg at all.   ;)
