Title: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by StegRock on Apr 2nd, 2004, 3:46pm Fellas, Thinkin' we might want to give one of our trademark "Huddle Up" style mock drafts a try here soon. The "Gridiron Huddle" style goes as follows, in short: "Someone will make the first pick. Someone ELSE follows. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GO TWICE IN A ROW. It would be preferable if you waited for, perhaps, at least TWO GUYS to go before going again." Another peripheral goal of our "Huddles", as has been mentioned in the past, is: "That it is a group activity which provides us with a fun opportunity to get to know one another better AND maybe bring a few more people in the fold in the process; so, spread the word." Here is a link to the last one of these we did around this time last year: http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1049266443. So, who's up for it? Put your name down here! Consider this the (preliminary) sign-up sheet. I look forward to having fun with this with you all! [smiley=havinablast.gif] ... Title: Re: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by StegRock on Apr 9th, 2004, 12:29am I'm lookin' to get this thing kicked off next Wednesday, April 14th, exactly 10 days before the actual NFL Draft! I think that would be a great time to start it, strategically. How does that sound to you guys? |

Title: Re: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by Philly on Apr 9th, 2004, 2:23am Fine by me. I think this year's draft is one of the more complex and difficult ones to predict. I anticipate a LOT of trading of pics throughout the first round. There are a ton of quality players available and teams may want to trade down and stockpile a few early picks or trade up to grab a specific targeted player. |

Hmmmm... [smiley=hmmmm.gif] Do you think, in "the Gridiron" spirit of innovation and daring to be different, there is any way of our incorporating that in our mock? If so, how? |

Title: Re: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by Philly on Apr 9th, 2004, 11:59am I know there is a way to do it, but I'm not a big fan of doing it. The problem is that we don't necessarily know what is proper compensation for trades. What does it take to move up three spots in the first round? Certainly it is a lot more if you are trying to move up at the top of the round than it is at the bottom. Is it worth the addition of a third round pick? A second? Who knows. The Giants are rumored to be interested in moving up from #4 overall to #1 overall. Most people believe that it is an effort to grab Eli Manning. However I've read speculation that the Giants really want Gallery and fear he won't fall to them at #4. How desperate are the Giants to move up? How desperate are the Chargers to move down? Who knows outside of Ernie Accorsi (Giants GM) and A.J. Smith (Chargers GM)??? I think it is better just to stick with the draft order and not use trades - I think it takes away some of the credibility from the mock. |

Title: Re: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by StegRock on Apr 9th, 2004, 12:20pm Ultimately, no matter how eager we are at the outset, realistically, we know we are going to be lucky the get through the first two rounds (with any "real" energy at least) and maybe only through the first. So, after the second round, who cares (about how the picks are stacked up... we in all likelihood won't even be dealing with it and few care, anyway)? Couldn't we (you/those who can do so intelligently, i.e., not me, I am willing to admit) just make a couple "educated" guesses beforehand as to how the first (and maybe the second round) is going to shake out and go by that list? That does not seem to take away any "credibility" from the mock. It's just a different, more aggressive spin. Hell, if we nail a couple of the trades, good for us. We'd be unique and have something to really hang our hats on. I mean we are going to do this no matter what. On the other hand, does the football world really need yet another mock of the same kind that is probably, hell, should (if it's going to be credible), come up with very similar results? Absolutely not! But, again, whatever! Just doing it in our "huddle up" style is a bit unique in and of itself, so... [smiley=shrug.gif] I'm just trying to push the creative envelope here. That's all. |

We wouldn't be unique if we included trades in a mock draft. There are plenty of them out there that try to predict trades in their mocks. The thing is that most of them do it so poorly that it makes their mocks irrelevant. (And before you say, but we are a more intelligent crowd and could do it better, take a look at the huddle-mock - 2nd one - that was done on this site last year. Bennie Joppru was selected #7 overall? Kelley Washington, a third-round pick, climbed into the top 10, and Talman Gardner, who almost went undrafted, was penciled in at #14 overall?) I'm in, regardless of how it is done. I just want to warn people that I will be much more critical of bad picks this year. ::) |

A certain admittedly under-astute (regarding the draft) member of ours was solely responsible for two of those three horrific picks. GOOD! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] For all I care, if those avidly participating deem a pick to be just too WHACK, I say you implement a voting system where the pick can be removed and re-made. |

Title: Re: Annual NFL Mock Drafts on "the Gridiron"! Post by bakes781 on Apr 13th, 2004, 3:33pm I'm in. However, I know there isn't much time to plan this out, but can't we assign some kind of order? For example; we could give Philly the picks of those in the NFC East or u could make it more random but include the Eagles in his group. The Pats in mine. Even if we can't do that, I think if we place sum kind of time limit (say 30 minutes) we can avoid having people make double picks. Not to tell u how to do things but I've done sum mock drafts in the past. If for instance we just have the 5 of us tomorrow we could each have 6 picks. The 2 leftover can be determined as a group or whatever. No matter how u wanna do it I am here ALL day til 5pm. |

Last year it worked pretty well. There was enough traffic that we didn't have a lot of time between picks. We also tended to defer to the "resident expert" for each team unless it took too long for them to show up. They only problems that I recall were that some people (one person in particular who claimed to have inside info) made some weird picks (addressed earlier) and after the first round we had a lot fewer people interested in making picks. |

Reading is fundamental... [smiley=RIF.gif] As per what the quote below of my initial post of this thread says, we use our distinctive "Huddle Up" method for these kinds of things. That in and of itself takes care of at least a lot of the concerns you express above. As Philly suggests, we've done a few mock drafts and mock NFL drafts here and with our using the "Huddle Up" method it usually works out great, except for the eventual fizzle-out, which is impossible to avoid. on 04/02/04 at 15:46:46, StegRock wrote:
