Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 14th, 2004, 8:24am Eli Manning is going to go first in the draft. The question is which team wants him bad enough to trade up. I see the Giants moving up to take this pick. (On I side note, I think the chargers will then in turn trade out of the 4th spot too.) In my opinion, he is the elite QB of the draft. A lot of people have other quarterbacks high in the draft, but I think he will be the man when all is said and done. He almost single handly turned around Ole Miss against some tough competition. I think he can do the same for a professional franchise. He is good enough to start his rookie year. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 14th, 2004, 10:25am Washington Redskins get the man they wanted. They get Sean Taylor, best Defensive player on the board. He is a perfect fit for Gregg Williams defensive scheme. The Skins are throwing up smoke signals that they want Gallery, but I don't think a trade will get done. I think they just want to force the Giants hand. |

You've got 10 days. I'd love to see this thing go for FOUR or so rounds! [smiley=yes.gif] ... [smiley=lickinmychops.gif] Also, since I'm not going to be participating (unless I am really inspired at a particular moment and feel adequately capable/knowledgeable to make a particular pick), I thought I would maintain the comprehensive list of picks for you all. It is in the first post of this thread as you can see. I will just update it from time to time. Also on a related note, PLEASE maintain the standard format, at least as a favor to me. It makes maintaining the comprehensive list MUCH easier on me when I go to cut and paste the picks from the other thread. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation! [smiley=bow.gif] |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by bakes781 on Apr 14th, 2004, 3:15pm I think if the first 5 picks happen to go down as we have projected, the Lions would look to definitely trade down (most likely with the Pats). Sean Taylor is the guy many "experts" believe the Lions have their eye on. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 15th, 2004, 10:06am Wow. Couple of surprises in our mock draft already. Sean Taylor to the Redskins is one. Tommie Harris slipping to the Titans is another. The biggest surprise in my mind was the pick made by Philly. Pittsburgh not taking Phillip Rivers shocked me. It makes the pick for the Bills pretty easy.....Phillip Rivers. I have the Jets taking Wilfork. Going with best player on the board strategy. Not a need, but I see the Jets trading out if it stands like this. Cause the depth at corner in this draft is HUGE. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by bakes781 on Apr 15th, 2004, 10:17am Oops sorry I guess I don't have Rivers ranked as highly as you Dirk. If there are any surprises I'd say not having a RB taken by now is the biggest. With the loss of Winfield, I felt Gamble was the perfect fit. Vincent's best years are behind him & the Bills seem to have a fondness for Buckeye CBs. Besides I'm not so sure the Bill's front office is ready to admit to their fans that they made a mistake with Bledsoe. |

Rivers is an option, and I considered him, but I thought that DeAngelo Hall was just too good to pass up at #11. The Steelers certainly need a stud CB, and Hall is the highest rated one. I could see the Steelers possibly moving up to grab Roethlisberger (who I don't think will go to Arizona) or moving down to select Rivers later in the round. Quote:
Again, a nice possibility for the Bills. Quote:
Wilfork is a stud, but they traded up to get a DT last year, so they might be more interested in grabbing a CB here. Remember that Coach Herm Edwards is a former DB himself and is rumored to really like Chris Gamble (plus Dunta Robinson is climbing the boards quickly too)... |

Well when making the selection for an NFL team I'm trying to look at it through their eyes. They've invested a boat load of money in the idea that Drew is their franchise QB. My theory is that things seem to always happen in 3s. So I am thinking they wanna give it one more year before they decide whether or not they have to rethink that idea. on 04/15/04 at 12:18:41, StegRock wrote:
Actually I'm in the minority on Bledsoe. I liked him while he was here. On the other hand, it is painfully clear that Drew & QBs of his type are not made to last in this era of football. So perhaps I did contradict myself. I just feel Buffalo has invested far too much to be willing to throw it all away after only 2 seasons. |

I don't think you contradicted yourself. I understood your thinking.(scarey) With that being said, I see Rivers as the QB of the future in Buffalo. He can sit behind Bledsoe for a year, year and half getting ready to be the main man. To be honest, I really hate my pick of Wilfork by the Jets. I don't think they would take him. However, I don't the Jets staying where they are given the way our draft played out. IMO they would trade down since there is not much difference between Hall, Gamble, Smith, etc at the cornerback position. So, going by best player on the board, it is actually a good VALUE pick. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by StegRock on Apr 15th, 2004, 1:11pm ...And, thus, you don't have them selecting a quarterback! Gotchya, bakes! That implicit possibility was not made explicit enough for me to follow. It went by me too fast. [smiley=doh.gif] No flaw or contradiction at all in your logic, in any case, bakes. Maybe a bit over-concise in your initial explanation, a bit of a leap in logic perhaps, leaving too much between the lines for us under-informed to have to read, but your ultimate reasoning, at least, is solid. Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Philly on Apr 15th, 2004, 1:42pm Number 14 to the Bears was a tough one. Wilfork was their #1 choice, but he went earleir than they expected. So, the question was to go best player available (Will Smith?) or draft for need. Since they missed out on Wilfork, they could consider trading down a few spots to a team interested in a DE or even Philip Rivers at QB. But Randy Starks is a very solid DT and it is a position of definite need. Brian Urlacher is a great MLB, but only when he has blockers in front of him. He's too small to work off of blocks and needs open space to make plays (like he did when he had Ted Washington and Keith Traylor in front of him in 2001). |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 16th, 2004, 8:26am THe 49ers pick was a tough one. They were targeting Reggie Williams but he went to the Bucs. THey really need a receiver, but it was too early to take any of the receivers left. Dunta Robinson does fill a need at cornerback. However, with all this being said, the 49ers have openly stated they want to move out of this spot. They have many many holes to fill and they want more picks. I see a team like New England moving up to this spot to jump ahead of the Broncos to take a DE or Steven Jackson who is still on the board. ( It is rumored the Broncos may take a running back) |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by bakes781 on Apr 16th, 2004, 11:02am Sorry for stepping in but I'd really like to get to the Pats pick at 21 before 5 o'clock today. Especially seeing as how I won't likely have access to the net over the weekend. As the 2 previously posted, Steven Jackson makes sense here. Although with BIG Will Smith still looming the temptation was there. Also I wouldn't be shocked if it was the Broncos who grabbed Rivers. Denver has a long history of success with backs that weren't highly regarded coming out of college, so drafting a RB this early is out of character for them. However, in the end Jackson is the best value at this point of the draft & he fills a glaring need with the trade of Portis. |

Shawn Andrews of Arkansas is the consenus number two offensive lineman in the draft behind Gallery and ahead of Jacob Rogers. Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Philly on Apr 17th, 2004, 8:51am Cowboys have many areas of need - RB, OL, CB... but the one that makes the most sense at this position is OL. Vernon Carey is a versatile player who can play anywhere on the OL and would be solid at tackle. It's still too early to grab one of the second tier RBs and there are plenty of solid CBs left for their picks later in the draft. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by bakes781 on Apr 19th, 2004, 9:01am Thanks guys. After a weekend of reflecting & studying, I gave a lot of thought to the possibility of selecting Vilma over Kevin Jones. However with everybody raving about his explosiveness as an outside runner, Kevin was the better choice in my opinion. I'd be happy with either player at 21. If we do go a different direction than RB at 21 then I would target another Jones, no not Greg, but Julius in the 3rd round. Incidently my 1st choice was Andrews but of course our hated rivals down in Miami had the same idea. On the Titans selection. Washington appears to be climbing up everybodies board. Could he be another "combine caper"? Or will his outstanding work on the track translate to great things on the field? [smiley=shrug.gif] |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Philly on Apr 19th, 2004, 11:41am The thing with Donnell Washington, I think, is that he was a dominant DT as a junior this past year. However, he was regarded as a bit undisciplined and lazy - a player who relied purely on his talent to succeed. However, following the season he really dedicated himself to getting in better shape and dropped a good deal of weight. I think teams have talked to him and gotten a good feel from him. Incidentally, his combine numbers were good, but nothing amazing. In fact, Igor Olshansky and Isaac Sopoaga both had much better overall numbers at the combine--and helped their causes immensely--however neither will go ahead of Donnell Washington. |

Now since we began this mock draft prior to the Pat's deal (#56 for Corey Dillon) I think it's only fair that we stick with the order in which we started. Obviously the Pats won't likely take a RB in the 1st round now, but we can't go back & change that. 33. Arizona Cardinals - Derrick Strait, CB, Oklahoma 34. New York Giants - 35. Right now, Pinner, is a question mark and Byrson and Gary proved last year that "they" were not the answer to the Lions running back problems. Why did I go on about how Buffalo doesn't need to draft a QB on day 1 & then go on to select Losman with their 2nd pick? Well 1st & most glaring reason, is lack of talent left at DE, their position of greatest need. 2nd Gamble could potentially fill a need at WR. Finally, for the simple fact that there are many who think QB is of immediate need & J.P. is a great value at this point. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Tony_O on Apr 21st, 2004, 1:22pm Would you have selected someone else with the Vikings 2nd rounder. The only other person I was really thinking of was Sean Jones S, Georgia, but both of the Vikings Safties performed well last year. I guess they could always try and find a #2 wideout again? |

I would have drafted the same for the Vikings [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. If I changed anything it might have been drafting Lehman instead of Bouleware but both are good picks and the Vikes would be very happy with either. The WR is no longer a priorty since they signed Robinson for the #2 spot and hopefully Burleson will be able to have a good second year in the #3 spot with Campell being #4. |

Boulware will probably end up playing safety in the NFL. He is too small and too weak to take on TEs and OLs as a LB. Teddy Lehman will probably be gone by the time the Vikes pick in round 2. Other possibilities would be Dontarrious Thomas (if still around), Daryl Smith, and Courtney Watson. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Philly on Apr 21st, 2004, 4:57pm Great pick, Mossaholic, for the Titans. Lehman is an underrated LB and I actually thought he was already selected in this mock. (Maybe I should pay attention.) Eagles get a LB that can back up inside and outside positions initially and will probably step in and be starting before the year is done. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Mossaholic on Apr 21st, 2004, 5:35pm The Titans have really worked on their D adding DT Washington, DE Hill, and LB Lehman. Some O-Line probably would have filled a bigger need but Lehman was just to appealing at the end of the second round. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by bakes781 on Apr 23rd, 2004, 10:31am Well from the time we started this thread up until now we've seen 2 players get denied entry, the Pats address their biggest need via a trade & the latest talk is that the consensus #1 is threatening to boycott his first season. [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] With that said at #65 the NY Giants select QB Matt Schaub. Hey it could happen. Yeah right [smiley=whatever.gif] |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by Philly on Apr 23rd, 2004, 1:28pm The Browns, after choosing Kellen Winslow and Jacob Rogers, really needed to start looking at the defensive side of the ball, but Jake Grove, a potential early second round pick was just too good of value at a position of need to pass up. |

Title: Re: 2004 NFL Mock Draft on "the Gridiron" - Commen Post by StegRock on Apr 24th, 2004, 1:21am Well, what amounts probably to the final update is up in the initial post of this thread. We got through pick #69! PERFECT! Maybe that should become "the Gridiron" tradition. We do it through 69! [smiley=yes.gif] ... [smiley=lickinmychops.gif] Just a thought. In any event, it's an insidiously clever stopping point. [smiley=wiseguy.gif] And, it came so naturally (for us). [smiley=pimpin.gif] ... ;) |
