Title: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by Mossaholic on Apr 22nd, 2004, 2:33am Eli and father Archie don't want to see Eli on the Bolts [smiley=bawling.gif] they want him in New York. I think I would give Manning a big [smiley=flipa.gif] and work a trade down. Work a deal with the Browns and let him fall in Mr. Davis' hands [smiley=sinister.gif] http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft04/news/story?id=1787271 |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by StegRock on Apr 22nd, 2004, 6:58am Also, I'd be curious to here the takes of those of you with some insight on this as to why the Manning's are taking such an apparently firm stance on this. [smiley=shrug.gif] ??? |

Actually, I don't think that they are taking a firm stand. I don't even think Archie Manning wanted it to go public. He is not giving an ultimatum or anything. All he states is that it is the WISHES of the Mannings that he does NOT go to San Diego. |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by Philly on Apr 22nd, 2004, 9:13am If you were Archie Manning, who would you rather have your son throwing to, Amani Toomer and Jeremy Shockey or Kassim Osgood and Antonio Gates? As an owner/GM/head coach, I'd be very leery about drafting a player who has their daddy making all of their decisions for them (Eli Manning, Kellen Winslow, Kevin Jones). I'd prefer to have a player who can think for himself and make his own decisions. |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by DirkDiggler on Apr 22nd, 2004, 11:04pm Mort is reporting on the 11pm Sportscenter that Eli Manning is willing to sit out the whole year if drafted by the Chargers. IF Mort is right, than San Diego should cower in a corner and cry. Mort has been wrong on many things in the past, so who knows how true it is. |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by bakes781 on Apr 23rd, 2004, 9:52am After a very brief 1 day break from the "Gridiron" due to a tummy ache, I'm back. ;D Regarding this whole Eli Manning debacle. From spending almost the entire day listening to sports talk radio, (talk about [smiley=sick.gif]) my assumption is that this has more to do with the coaches than anything else. On one side you've got Tom Coughlin who just signed a 5 year deal in New York. And the other you've got Marty Schottenhiemer who could in all likelyhood be gone in a year or two. Also the drastic difference in markets has to play a role too. Either way I fear that Archie has unintentionally set up his son to fail. If I'm the Giants I had better be 100% sure that Eli is the best QB in this draft. Because if not & apparently some think Roethlisberger &/or Rivers is better, than they'd be wise not to move up to #1. |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by KillerKingSting on May 7th, 2004, 2:43pm IMO the Giants OLINE was/is much worse off than SD's OLINE is so, - Archie sure wasn't thinking of his son's blindside. Also, it wasn't very smart of the Chargers to go public w/ this since, they could have baited the Giants a bit more and so, instead of showing their hand - even though they received a great deal from the giants, they might have gotten even more had they not gone public w/ it. If the Chargers managed to get any more for a player who seemed to hold all the leverage over the team that drafted him, then the FBI would have had to start investigating the crime that happened when the Chargers robbed the Giants. Regardless of the childish attitudes of Eli and Archie, the Chargers made out wonderfully in the deal. They get a bona fide QB prospect in Rivers and picked up a lot of extra picks. |

Title: Re: Eli doesn't want to play for Chargers Post by KillerKingSting on May 7th, 2004, 3:10pm Yes Eli seemed to have the top hand leverage in that Deal. But the Giants were certainly a close 2nd IMO since they KNEW Eli didn't want to play for San D. via the Chargers going public with it. My point was that, if they (SD) would have kept their mouths shut on the whole deal, they might have been able to get more (yep they got a heck'o'deal as it is) - its speculative of course but, it also only makes more sense........................don't show your hand in poker. These guys lie and throw out miscalculated information throughout the whole "draft" ceremony as it is ........show your hand and it could give everyone else the edge. |
