Title: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by Philly on May 27th, 2004, 4:18pm
I'm starting a mock draft that includes 2004 NFL rookies only.

This will be a 6-round offensive rookie draft with 8 teams (assume it is a keeper league).

Each team will need 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB, WR, or TE).

Standard Performance Scoring is as follows:
1 pt. - WR or TE reception
1 pt. - 10 yards rushing or receiving
1 pt. - 20 yards passing
6 pts. - TD pass
6 pts. - TD run or catch
-2 pts. - INT or fumble lost

Drew Henson is available.
Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams are not available.

The draft order will be randomly selected (names pulled from a hat) and then proceed in a serpentine fashion until the end.  Each person will have a maximum of 24 hours to make a pick.  If they do not make their pick within 24 hours, a replacement owner will be assigned (based on immediate availability).  If necessary, we can suspend the draft on weekends.  (As always, proxy lists are encouraged if you are not going to be online.)

I will be taking part in the draft, so I need seven other owners.  Please indicate your interest in this thread.  The first nine to sign up are in and then we will begin.

Alright we've got four teams going so far:

Team Philly
Team KillerKingSting
Team BarnabyWilde
Team Tony_O

I've decided to reduce the number of teams from 10 to 8 because of the size of the rookie pool.  It will also get us started even earlier.

I am in.

I do have a clarifying question.....  is the rookie draft for keeper leagues or for 2004 season.  That affects where I draft them big time.

Thanks!

We'll assume that you'll have a chance to keep whoever you draft for as long as you desire.

If noone else steps up, I'll volunteer.  Sounds like a blast!

I am kind of worried about having computer problems, so that is why I am hesitant.  Therefore, if someone else wants the spot, take it... but if you want to get it going; I am here.

OK... we have eight.  If anyone else really wants to step up and take bgsgfan's place, go ahead and speak.  Or, if anyone would like to be considered as an alternate should anyone drop out or not be able to finish, let me know.

[smiley=ontheclock.gif] This is only 6 rounds (48 total players) so it shouldn't be too long.

Here is the draft order (pulled randomly from a hat):

1 sameoldsameold
2 DirkDiggler
3 BarnabyWilde
4 sexydexy
5 bgsgfan
6 Philly
7 KillerKingSting
8 Tony_O

Remember, each team consists of 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, and 1 Flex (RB or WR or TE).

We can begin at any time, however the 24-hour rule will not begin to take effect until Tuesday, June 1st, since we are starting on a holiday weekend.   [smiley=patriot.gif]

Make your draft picks in the other thread:  http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1085969792;start=0

Keep any discussion about the draft (or questions) in this thread.  Thanks!  Have fun!

S.Jackson went first. Nice pick. This is difficult to evaluate since, we dont have rosters to indicate what our needs are. How is everyone else evaluating this draft? Just the best player available? Keeper league but, whose to say if I reach for a Tatum Bell (or someone) that my RBs are ok right "now" and thats why I would take him at a certain spot.

Any feedback would help me out! Thanks!

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by Philly on May 31st, 2004, 9:31am
You have to assume that there are no players on your roster, so you're either taking the player you feel will be an immediate impact (if that is what you want), or a player who just has SO much potential you can't pass him up.

Obviously Steven Jackson will not be starting this year (unless Faulk gets hurt, but, really, what are the chances ::) ).  While there are other player who will make a more immediate impact.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by BarnabyWilde on May 31st, 2004, 6:54pm
I selected Jones due to the fact I believe he will make the biggest impact as a rookie. He will be handed the starting job in Detroit and barring and setbacks, he should put up decent stats this season.

All good picks so far... nothing too shocking.  I'll update the list tomorrow.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by bgsgfan on Jun 1st, 2004, 2:18am
Ben Roethlisberger was a homer pick, I guess.  I justify it by looking at the roster requirements, i.e. only 1 RB.  I am pretty sure I can snag a decent RB in round 2, while after the top 4 QBs there is a huge dropoff.  As far as Rivers vs Roeth, well Big Ben has a ton more talent around him.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by sexydexy on Jun 1st, 2004, 2:41am
Just as a note...Kevin Jones hasn't won the starting job yet.  Mariucci has been on record saying that he is high on Artose Pinner still.

Looks like the safest RB pick was Jackson, who is the heir apparent to Faulk.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by KillerKingSting on Jun 1st, 2004, 4:29am
It'll BEE interesting to see how Mooch handles his RB situation. Always a RBBC in Frisco and with K.Jones being a rookie, not sure he'll get the rock on a full time basis w/out some signifigant cut in time from the other backs.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by Philly on Jun 1st, 2004, 6:31am
Well, unless Eddie George ends up in Dallas, I think I made the safest RB pick for the short-term.  Julius Jones is currently listed as the #1 RB in Dallas and there is no one on their roster right now who will beat him out.

While Mooch said that he is still high on Artose Pinner (as was I last season)... I imagine it will be very hard to keep KJ off the field in Detroit for very long.

Welp! Here I am at the 1.7, and , OH, hold on a sec , .....let me get my glass of coke,..........over there on the coffee table, reaching reaching,........well  LOOKIE here, right BEEside my ice cold glass of coke is a RB named Tatum, What luck & who would've thought it??,.............there aren't alot of great RBs left, and Bell has the most potential of the ones that are left.

Rivers is left but, I'll either get him or Henson on my way back so,.woop-dee-doo-winger stingers!

Mr. Shananigans better not let me down,...............is there another Portis in his pocket?

By the way, I thought I saw an add for "Stick'em" on sale, ...........now where was that? Surfing the Raiders web site...........lah dee dah........................

Bell may BEE a nice pick someday, Mr. Bumble, but I think Quentin Griffin earned a #1 spot in Denver with his performance at the end of the 2003 season.

Anyway, I really like Bell as a RB.  The guy can run and catch and has great speed.  But can he block?  That will be the biggest determinant of playing time in the NFL.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by KillerKingSting on Jun 1st, 2004, 11:37am
Not that Bell is huge or anything but, Griffin is SMALL and won't BEE able to handle the fulltime RB load of Denver's running attack and BEEsides, if Girffy really did win that job last year - why sign Hearst?
Bell has room to add mus-kels, but just the fact of the added weight of the football would slow Griffy down, he will BEE mush by mid-season - Hearst will have nagging injuries, and Tatum Tot Bell will step in and take it to the HOUSE babe-Beeeeeeeeeeeeee

yeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaw!

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!

My obscure pick of a TE at the 2.2 is BEEcause he is the BEST player available left at HIS position. He'll be like having a 3rd wr around that posts #1-2WR stats.

By the way, are we going to go back and evaluate these picks in 2-3 years to see how our teams are faring?

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!
Post by Philly on Jun 1st, 2004, 12:32pm
In two to three years???  I can barely remember what I did yesterday.

Anyway, my hope is that this mock will give some idea how each of the rookies is valued currently.  I know many of us play in keeper leagues and will have to be looking at and ranking the rookie players before too long, so hopefully this will help.

Winslow, if he gets into camp (the Postons will do everything possible to keep him out as long as possible; it's their M.O.)... could have stats that rival Gonzo's in his first year.  However, I think that he will miss enough of the training camp to be a step slow and not in synch with the rest of the offense.

thats fine, I draft the best player available dividing up the positions. In other words, I think T.Bell is the BEST RB in this draft. Fitz the best WR, etc etc. So, I won't reach for a #2 when I still feel there is a #1 on the board even though, not proven, I'll take a chance on upside.

Hey, I didn't even know that! Your right. I have to get into this VBD stuff sometime or another, it sounds like a lot of fun. And I am ever so curious to see how it would work out on a full scale of players.

I copied an article off some FF site a while back that explains VBD pretty well.  I know I saved it on my computer.  I'll email it to you if you want.  It was my introduction into VBD, which I do incorporate into my cheat-sheet building to a decent extent.

Two of the top six running backs were left for my 2.4 pick.  I had to get one of them now, or hope for Cobb later (was there an 8th RB drafted this year?  :P).  Its a really interesting group of 6 rookie RBs this year.

There were 16 RBs taken in the draft by my count... which is why I only required 1 RB per team and included the flex position to allow for an additional one if so desired.

I was lucky enough to grab one of those backs in Greg Jones.  Word out of Jacksonville is he will get the goal line carries this year and is the heir apparent to Fred Taylor.   Not a bad start with Eli Manning and Greg Jones.

Greg Jones could step right into the role that Stacey Mack occupied in Jax a few years ago.  He vultured so many of those TDs away from Fred Taylor.  I can very easily see Jones scoring close to double-digit TDs as a rookie (although he won't be much in the yardage category).

My third pick was actually a little difficult to decide on.  I decided on Ben Watson, TE.

For straight value, there were obviously better receivers on the board.  However, the difference between the 3rd and 4th best TE available was HUGE.  Had to go with that because IMO the difference between the 5th best receiver and the 12th best receiver is not too much.  Recievers are a crap shoot at this point.

If Josh Reed doesn't show improvement soon, Lee Evans will be catching some long bombs from Drew Bledsoe as early as this season.

Lee Evans should be the #2 in that offense as Reed is more suited to the slot. Good pick!

Mike Williams used to put fear into people when he came out of the tunnel before a game. But it was Colbert who put fear into defenses when the game started.

He's always been a #2 WR possesion type of guy - and a very successful one. Thats the plan in Carolina where he is not going to be asked to be #1 even though, as a possesion guy - you could see #1 WR Numbers from this guy. Hes in the perfect system for his talent w/ Steve Smith as the burner.

Henson - well, from the QBs left and seemingly that 2 other owners besides myself has yet to NAB a QB - he was the BEST and w/ least amount of draw back that was left on the board.

Rb at this point is a crap shoot.

I think I agree with your assessment DD.  However, I like my roster too.  Every one of my players will contribute this year (except for QB).  KKS has a nice roster too.  Looks like the 4-6 spots have been the best locations to be.

Thanks guys.  I was a little worried that compared to the rest of you I wouldn't be as knowledgeable about the rookies; so, to be totally honest, I went with a pure "homer" theory  :-X.  I would never let myself be this much of a homer in a real draft, but i could have fun with this.  Out of 6 players I have 3 Buckeyes, 1 Steeler, and (in Chris Perry) a player I developed respect for while watching him play the Buckeyes.  Derrick Hamilton is the only player I don't know much about.

Title: Re: Mock Rookie Draft - Discussion!

I sound like a recording, but I think KKS and I have the most balanced and talented teams.  Philly has probably the best RB and 2 of the top WR's, so even without a great QB its 3rd best IMO.  The other teams may end up being better, but have more holes and/or less talent.  No clear winners or losers, good job!

Was the format OK?  Let me know if you think we went a round or two too long.  I know we were scraping for talent near the end.

Of course the real draft will really dictate the mock.  There weren't many RBs available this season, however next season looks to be a huge one for quality RBs, but the WR corps will be much less impressive than this year's.

A mock rookie draft like this...well, doesn't make much sense. :-P

At least the starting requirements, that is.  What would be best is a real mock rookie draft where you just take the best available player.

And I can't believe nobody likes Fitzgerald/Woods/Darling as a WR corps.

Shocking actually.  I thought I had the best WR corps.

:o

Thanks for the tips.  I'll be sure to take that under consideration for next year.  I was trying to put it in some sort of framework (I like structure), but I guess it might work better without any restrictions.

I'd say you probably do have the best WR corps, however, I think we were looking at the teams as a whole.  You won't get any immediate production from your QB (or for quite some time if Vick stays healthy).  Plus your RB has "issues," although he is playing behind another RB with "issues."

Well since we are on the subject here of suggesting ideas, I think since 6 of the 8 members of this Mock play in IDP leagues that we ought to include IDPs in it next seasoning.
As far as the structure goes, I can go either way - either best player draft OR structured as the way you had it Jeff.
But I think only you & Jeremy are the only ones (to my knowledge) that at this point in time, are not in an IDP league and by the way - I would like to remedy that by extending to both of you - in a year or 2 - an invitation to our IDP league and well, that'll fix the problem of not bEEing in an IDPer! ;)

Or if any of the gridironers are interested in joining our ranks in future time then, please let me know - we do plan to expand to 10 teams shortly though, not sure how many year(s) down the road that will be and even so - perhaps 12 teams.

Ah, I dont want to rob this thread of it's original intentions, so I'll quit advertising my more membranes at this point.

All in all, I believe we all drafted very well. I WILL keep up with this for 3 year period so, it'll BEE fun to go back on it and see what the dealie BEE.

But honestly, might as well BOW to me & bgsg now, we just might take it easy on yah sooner than later :D
