Well folks,

Here it is! The first official IDP league (I should point out that KilleKingSting's leauge is also an IDP league, but it was not started here on the Gridiron), and brand new Gridiron League! The Giants of the Gridiron League will begin it's inaugural season this year.

The league will consist of 10 teams (12 if there is enough interest). Rosters will consist of 26 players. Each week, lineups will include:

1 QB
2 RB
2 WR
1 TE
1 K
1 Flex (RB/WR/TE)
2 DL (Any defensive line position)
2 LB (Any linebacking position)
2 DB (Any seconday position)

Scoring is as follows:

1 pt per every: 10 yards rushing or receiving, 20 yards passing, PAT kicked, assist (on a tackle)
2 pts per every: PAT thrown, rushed, received, 1/2 sack, tackle
3 pts per every: field goal kicked, fumble recovery
4 pts per every: TD thrown, sack, interception, safety
6 pts per every: TD rushed/received, any defensive touchdown by any defensive player or special team TD
-1 pt for every: fumble, interception

Each team will be able to make 2 transactions per week in reverse order of standings (worst to first each round)

The draft will be a snake draft. Draft order and date TBA.

Just so there are no misunderstandings, this would be a "Gridiron League", not an "affiliated 'FFLA'" league.  So, this would not be indicated among your "league" titles.

A couple questions regarding the scoring...

A safety is worth the same amount of points as a mundane tackle?  Is this right?  As rare as safeties are, I would think they should be worth 4 or 5 points.

Also, a special teams TD would have to be scored by a player (a WR or DB for example) who also returns kicks/punts?  Right?  There is no separate special teams position since we aren't using a team defense.

Finally, a FG is a FG and is worth 3 points regardless of distance, right?

(Please pardon my ignorance - if it is ignorance... I haven't played IDP in a long time.)

I also would think that a half sack would be worth half of what a whole sack is worth(4), however the scoring chart currently lists a half sack as three. So a solution would be to increase the value of a whole sack to say 5 or decrease the value of a half sack to two. Just food for thought not criticism.

I did a little research on safeties... the Buffalo Bills recorded 3 of them in 2003.  Most teams had 0 or 1.  A handful of teams had 2... for the season.

So, as Tony said, food for thought, not criticism... either make them worth more points (even defensive TDs are more common than safeties) or don't bother counting them at all.

I tweaked the scoring a bit.

But, to answer your question Jeff,
say you have a DB who returns punts. He'll get points for a TD scored on a punt/kick return. Got it?

I'm not going to join, juts a question, why don't DEF players get pts for forced fumbles and passes defensed? Do you think they should?

Just on a  lighter note the NFL scores a sack as 1 tackle + 1 sack. That how they score boys, so keep that in mind.

Just a chime : if you guys did decide on an auction draft then, I have come across a lil keeper system that might be of interest along those lines of attaining players.

Auction draft - everyone gets a set amount of fake FF money - bid on players & fulfill your rosters; keep anyone you'd like at the end of the season BUT, in order to bid on other players (rookies, players not on rosters, players dropped from other's rosters etc etc) you must drop current players ffom your roster to free up money; the money you free up is the only amount you have to bid on new players; no player can be kept longer than 3-5 years (you pick the time frame on that though, with this type of system, 3 years works best).

I participate in two auction style drafts and I thoroughly enjoy them.  Adds another dimension.  ;D  However, they are best done in person.  I doubt this is a legitimate option for this one but just my two cents!   [smiley=laugh.gif]

I too like auction drafts I think it gives everyone an equal chance at all the players. In a 12 team league if you pick 12th there are 11 player you have no chance of drafting.

However, I agree with our freind Chumpzilla, that an auction needs to be done in person and not on-line.

Although I know JoJo meant well as he is now an avid fan of IDP, I really think Jim has done a wonderful job with this scoring system.
With only 7 starting IDPs out of 11 men on the field that can actually score for the defense; in contrast to the offense in which the offensive linemen do not contribute statistically speaking - that being 5 players that aren't scoring on the offensive side of the ball - yet most FF leagues start 6-7 players; - by not adding passes defensed anf forced fumbles and by keeping the worth of sacks down - you now have a starting lineup of IDPs that have value at depth.

Adding PDs would only make the CBs stronger and in this league's case, the safetys are the studs of the secondary - thats 2 per team -vs- 4 DBs per team with added value on CBs. But only starting 2 DBs now puts value at depth on his position w/out having to add PDs.

Adding forced fumbles &/or increasing sack points adds more value to the DL guys. Theres 4 of them that can actually score when taking into account the DTs as well as the DEs.
Keeping the DL guys at mimimun scoring oppurtunies makes the LBs - 3 to 4 per NFL team, now the main focus of the proposed starting lineup (along with safetys - good ones!).

This scoring system is right in line with his starting lineup requirements.

Besides that, the Insane League already has PDs, FFs and in 2005, 16 starting IDPs. Having a different type of IDP league on the Great Grid is something of value in and of itself.

Thats not to say adding PDs & FFs or increasing the sack worth would be out of line but, as you have it Jim, you've done a wonderful job. Just my opinion and rationale to go along with - also I am excited that IDPs are starting to get going on this site.

Props to Jim for taking on the responsibility of getting this all together and making it happen!

Heya BW... I was just checking out the Yahoo league site and they don't seem to list LB as a separate position?  Maybe I was just reading it wrong, but the league settings showed us starting 2 DL, 2 DB, and 2 D(???).  When I went in to sort the players, there was no separate LB listing.

You are corect Philly, they do not list LB's seperate. So, in those 2 spots marked "D", put your LBs. Yahoo has seemed to group all the DL and DL together...  [smiley=shrug.gif]

Are we going with Yahoo's classification of Willie McGinnest as a DL?  I see him as DL someplaces and LB others.

Last time I looked, all of the linebackers were classified as DL. I don't know if Yahoo plans on fixing that or not.

Well, my question still stands, for our purposes is he a LB or DL?  I have seen him listed both ways (I am trying to get my lists together and doing some homework).

He is a "tweener", much like Terrell Suggs. But I always have him listed as a lineman in the QFL.

So are you saying he can be drafted at either position?  I just don't want anyone drafting Ray Lewis as a DL because he sometimes lines up on the LOS and blitzes.

We all know Lewis is a Linebacker. I have no idea why Yahoo lists all NFL linebackers as "DL" and not "LB".

All they have are "DL" and "DB" on yahoo. For league purposes, we will have  6 starting defensemen. 2 DL, 2 DB and 2 D. In the spots marked D, we will have to put our Linebackers. I think we all know who plays Linebacker and Defensive Line in the NFL. If there are any gray area players you think need to be addressed (like Suggs and McGinest) please let me know here.

As long as they have all the players available.  I know in previous years rookies that hadn't signed yet and one or 2 key players were not available (Lavar Arrington???).  It had something to do with the stats they use going through the NFLPA, I think.

Anyhow, how do we address those players that aren't available through Yahoo (if any)?

Also, I feel stupid but I want to be sure, Suggs and McGinnest are both going to be considered DL for our league?

Is our draft a "live" draft or do we need to submit our rankings and yahoo will allocate players based on our rankings? [smiley=lost.gif]

If it is live is there anything special we need to do and is there a time limit on each pick?  I have never used Yahoo for fantasy football before.

Why not get them early so you don't have to worry about them... first round perhaps?

HOW IS EVERYBODY FEELING ABOUT THEIR TEAMS AFTER THE DRAFT?

I PERSONALLY COULD USE ANOTHER STARTING RB IF ANYBODY WANTS TO TRADE?

I THINK I DID PRETTY WELL AT DEFENSE AND I LOVED GETTING GREEN AT 5( I HAD HIM GOING AT 3) SO THAT WAS SWEET, BUT I CAN'T FAULT THE PICKS THAT OTHER PEOPLE MADE.  I LOVED THOSE PLAYERS TOO.  

I ACTUALLY DID NOT KNOW IT WAS A KEEPER LEAGUE UNTIL SOMEBODY MENTIONED IT DURING THE DRAFT.  

IT SAYS 4 KEEPERS.  I HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A KEEPER LEAGUE BEFORE.  DOES THIS MEAN AT THE END OF THE YEAR I GET 4 GUYS FOR MY TEAM FOR NEXT YEAR(ANY GUYS)?

THE DRAFT WAS A GREAT TIME AND I LEARNED A TON OF NEW NAMES OF PLAYERS.  TILL THE SEASON BEGINS FELLAS.

Yeah to tell you the truth I missed that part as well, but it is written on this first post on this thread. I like the idea of keeping four anyways. good luck to all. I'm looking for a running back if anybody is interested.

Well, with the "automatic move notice", there shouldn't be a problem with that.

If you are going to move it, why wait 24 hours, though?  On the other hand, there are reasons to leave it here.  I actually would prefer you do, but ultimately don't care.  Anyway, would you like me to do it now for you?  Whatever. :)
