Title: New 2004 Stuff
Post by junkyardjake on Jul 26th, 2004, 10:56am
Hey guys,

Been working on a new format for stats pages, how do you think this looks ?

http://www.junkyardjake.com/samples/Matchup/DefVsOff/season1/qb.htm

I'll post some other new stuff later, I'm interested in your expert opinions.

Oh, if anyone has like one of those especially huge, drive-in movie monitors, could you let me know if everything on that page lines up ?

I have a 17" monitor at work and am running it at 1024x768 and all the numbers line up in the columns.

The chart, however, is centered in the screen with a LOT of empty space on each side, while your logo header is left-justified at the top.  Looks a bit odd that way.

Just out of curiosity... how do you come up with the match-up rating?  Or is that a proprietary algorithm?

Thanks Philly, that's what I thought.  Do you think it would look alright with the table left justified ?

The matchup rating  is essentially a z-score ((value-mean)/standard deviation) that represents how positively or negatively a team varies from the overall league average.   The z-score is then rescaled to a value between 0 and 100.

Thanks for checking the page out, could you give me your comments when I repost it tonight ?

If you left-justify the table, that will leave a lot of empty space at the right for anyone who is running anything above 800x600.  Of course you could use that space and put a big banner for the Gridiron Forums there... I doubt Steg would have a problem with that. ;)

Anyway, I'll give it a look-see and get back to you.

Maybe a montage background featuring the Gridiron cheerleaders ?

Actually, the thing that would really make the Gridiron a household name would be a special Halftime performance by Steg at the 2004 Super Bowl.  I think he should do a Ricky Martin song with Jennifer Lopez.  Of course they will probably crack down on blouse ripping this year, but maybe if he knocks her hat off or something that would provide amazing publicity !  [smiley=fish.gif]   (I've been wanting to use the fish,  noone ever uses the fish) [smiley=MrT.gif]  (Mr. T deserves some props too).

Thanks for your help, talk to you later,
JYJ :^)

...

JYJ,

I'm workin' on an oversized 20" monitor.  Your page looks fine in both 1024 X 768 and 800 X 600 resolutions.  I do agree with Philster, though, that having the header and footer stuff left-justified while having the table center-justified looks weird.  I think it would look best all center-justified.

Keep in touch on it all, RC.

Over and Out,
Steg [smiley=smileytrash.gif]

The Gridiron Cheerleaders!  I guess that would be me!!

The Gridironette! (No Smurfette smiley?)

There should be more of us along the way, after I get the gals in my Ladies of Football league chatting about our threads.  They're just getting started up with sporadic comments, and they sound hungry for some football talk!

Hey guys (and Callie), thanks again for the helpful suggestions and comments.   I center-justified and created a background for the new pages, I think they look better.  (Steg, I also added a line to the football field motif, I have no idea how you noticed that there were only four lines).

I have some other stuff that I will post separately, if you could test the pages out and let me know what you think that would be awesome.

[smiley=stoogelarry.gif]  Alright talking about misunderstood and underused smiley's, this one is supposed to be Curly from the Three Stooges ?  I think it looks more like Screech from 'Saved by the Bell'.

Average Draft Analysis

Hey guys, this page is an average draft analysis compiled from a bunch of mock drafts (Yahoo! and AntSports).  What'dya think ?

Offensive Team Impact Report

This took a long time figuring out how to automate it, but I think it's interesting.  It attempts to rank teams by their fantasy point production; in the last two columns at right, you can invoke charts that show the teams highest point producers and also the percent of total team points that they account for.

Useful, inane, ridiculous ?

Thanks for your help,

[smiley=wiseman.gif]  I think I know this guy, he wanders around the streets of Charlotte talking to himself and collecting bird poop.

That looks good.  I like it all centered on the page.

(Oh, and that is Larry [smiley=stoogelarry.gif]... this is Curly [smiley=stoogecurly.gif]... but I don't understand why Curly has a little hair above his ears.  I remember him being completely bald.)

Looks great.  I tried using VBD a lot last year, but ignored ADP.  This year I'm using both.  I also use the numbers from xpertleagues.com in addition to AntSports.

I like most of it.  I think the pie charts are a bit over the top.  I can't imagine why I'd need them.  The only other thing I might want on that page is (on the bar graph where you have the player totals) BOTH the total points to date and a points-per-game number too.

Thanks for the insights Philly.  Yeah, I agree that second chart is probably redundant, hopefully I'll have time to  incorporate average points point per game or something that supplements the first chart in a more useful way.

Thanks for your help !

Care (in both senses of the words), my friend, and resultant attention to detail.

Today's useless bit of trivia...Curly wasn't bald at all, he had a full head of hair, it was just cut VERY short ( not shaved ) to make his appearance more comical. I guess he was just "a victim of coicumstance."

I will gladly preview the pictures and offer my opinion.

I originally thought of shaving my legs and offerring my own picture, but that would drive people away in droves.

I've actually got my picture up on this site, so I've already driven those with weak stomachs away.   :-/

Aw, Philly.  I think your picture is just fine.  But to join the Gridironettes, bgsg is right.  You have to post a picture of your legs.  (Before you guys start, as founder of the Gridironettes I do not have to submit to my own rules.)

[offtopic]Heya Steg... how about a page dedicated to self-submitted pictures of the Gridironers, male or female?  I like to have an image of the people I'm talking to...[/offtopic]

[offtopic]I'd be for it.  I just don't think it would fly,... at least not yet (we're not quite big enough yet).  Also, as I remain scanner-less, the option of people's just sending me their pic by regular mail doesn't exist.  It would have to already have been scanned in or be digital.  Most probably would, but options would be less.  I say we see where we are in a year or so and revisit this then.[/offtopic]
