Title: Will the new rules change the drafting statigies
Post by steelkings on Aug 4th, 2004, 8:29am
Im in a strictly scoring league. The no contact after 5 yards for db's is going to be strictly enforced. NFL officials are meeting with each team to explain the rules and to make sure teams know that its going to be inforced. The other thing the officials said they are not going to allow is hand contact with a reciever during a route. That too will be inforced. With this said, does someone like Randy Moss or Terrell Owens become a lot more valuble? Would you consider them as the top pick in a draft? Does this beg you to draft a qb earlier in the draft? RB's always score lots more than recievers. Does this change anything?

From what I have seen, it hasn't changed any drafts or projections that I have seen.  Because of the predominance of VBD, the key factor in determining draft order is how each position in total compares to the other positions - and this rule change tends to impact all of the players within each position pretty much the same.

If you see advantages to certain players because of this rule (or actually the enforcement of it), you should have an advantage over most other people.

My advice is to adjust your rankings/projections within each position, but don't change the way you draft each position (stay with your draft theory - VBD, RB heavy, seat of the pants, etc.).  Also I'd advise against adjusting too much - even though the NFL says they will do this, it remains to be seen; and any effects remain to be seen as well - it could lead to more emphasis on pass coverage and the rushing stats end up getting the benefit.

I think it will benefit QBs and WRs a bit this year.  However, everyone is still going to draft RB early and often, and if you don't you're still screwed.

Like bgsg said, it will affect most of the WRs fairly equally.  In 2003 there were 2 QBs who threw for 4000+ yards.  In 2004 that number could grow to 4 or 5.  The same thing will happen with the receivers.  Look for their overall numbers to increase slightly.

If its obvious that it will have a positive affect on the WRs. But also.........WHICH TYPE OF WR is a question to ponder because, the BIGGER ones LIKE the advantage of contact after 5 yards because thats how they get separation!
Its the lil tiny speedy guys that will benefit the most from this.

Can't leave my BEEloved IDPs out there w/out adding to their worth as well.............it should also affect the DBs tackle #s in a positive way though, Passes defensed might take a drop because a lot more of them might get called for penaltys however, w/ more and more passes being thrown because of the new advantage, expect to see MORE INTs as well as there will BEE more oppurtunities to nab em!

I bid you all farewell  [smiley=sultan.gif]
