Title: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by StegRock on Dec 27th, 2004, 2:14am This is for the dedicated and enthusiastic Gridironer who seeks opportunity and wants to bring a little something to "the Gridiron" for its betterment... A couple years ago our esteemed member FourTwoOh, before he hit the road as an interstate truck driver, hosted an AWESOME post-season fantasy contest here "between the 20's". It was a TON of fun [smiley=havinablast.gif] and brought in some new blood to boot. I wasn't sure if he'd step up again last year, so I left it to the last minute. He wasn't able to do it and it was too late to pursue. :( Not that it would be that huge of a job, but to do it right, which is the way it should be done on and, moreover, for "the Gridiron", it would probably be about 2 hours a week. I just cannot take it on. SO, is there anyone or any group of dudes out there who would like to bring this fun (and beneficial) event back to "the Gridiron"? If the participation just gets too overwhelming (unlikely, I think), I could probably pitch in and run some of the stats or collect and organize the lineups or something. As for some logistics and a significant caveat... Like FourTwoOh did it, doing it on a spreadsheet would be the way to go both for organization purposes and to make it easy. So, spreadsheet savviness would be a plus. If you know how to make a web page, all the better! If you would like to make a cool web page up for the contest and send it to me each week, I will gladly post and link to it (perhaps as a feature here) along with the spreadsheet. That would be bonus, though. As long as the spreadsheet is neat, I can easily turn that into a basic web page. As to the caveat, as I suggested to FourTwoOh two years ago, I would really like to do a post-season contest that goes not just through the playoffs, but the Pro Bowl also! THAT would be "uniquely ours"! I've NEVER seen anything fantasy-wise that brings the Pro Bowl into "play". It would be so cool to do so. So, it would be a five-week contest, the wildcard games, the divisional playoffs, the conference championships, the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl, all under the same rules. Come on! How cool would this be? And, think of it! It could become YOUR [smiley=newbie.gif] BABY on "the Gridiron"! A big contribution to the site and a great way to make your mark on it! Moreover, you can make it a lasting mark: I would like to see it become (what was originally intended) an annual tradition on "the Gridiron". It could be YOUR five weeks to shine on! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Who knows what it could grow into someday as FantasyFootballer.com grows? And, you'd be the head of it! See the bigger picture that's going on around here... Don't be afraid to think big! Well, on to the mundane,... to familiarize yourself with the set-up, here is a link to the thread by way of which FourTwoOh ran the contest in 2003: http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1040672956. Here's to hoping at least one good man here decides to step up to the plate and take advantage of this cool opportunity to help the site AND add his creativity to and put his stamp square [smiley=square.gif] on it... Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by StegRock on Dec 28th, 2004, 2:22am Guys, this is an IMPORTANT one and, moreover, a great opportunity (for the right person)! Not a huge job, but something that can become a real tradition on "the Gridiron". For a lousy five or so weeks of two hours or so a week of work, you'd really be making your mark AND have a fantasy-football baby to toy with and use your (web page) creativity on and yet not be committed to anything all too time-consuming or that would take away from your "regular season" fantasy involvements. This is a "down-time" type of event. ... No volunteers out there!?!? |

Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by StegRock on Dec 28th, 2004, 1:25pm Great, Jim! Thank you! I must ask... To what degree do you plan on running it, i.e. with respect to spreadsheeting and web page development? And to further the discussion, are there any other volunteers out there who would like to assist Jim if/when he needs it and/or in any of the technical/developmental areas? |

Well, to be honest, I am not much of a technical/spreadsheet kind of person. I usually do all of my stats by hand with the help of the internet (USA today is what I go by) How did 420 do it last time? |

Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by bgsgfan on Dec 30th, 2004, 8:46am This definitely piques my interest. I can set it up and do the first week as far as spreadsheets go. After that, I'd rather hand it over to someone else. Web page stuff I know NOTHING about, however I could probably get some help with that from a friend or maybe someone else can handle that end. |

Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by StegRock on Dec 30th, 2004, 1:21pm Well, guys, frankly speaking, spreadsheeting is key for this. That is how FourTwoOh had done it. Not only does it expedite the work and organize the presentation, I can easily convert it into a web page, which addresses Jeremy's comment. It seems to me that a good way to proceed here will be for Jeremy to set up the spreadsheet and do Wildcard Weekend as he suggests. Then, pass it on to Jim. As for the web page end of it, let's not assume anything and add unnecessary cooks. You guys just send me the sheets and I'll convert 'em. I just brought up the web page development end of things just in case there was some one of our "Gridironers" out there who is committed to this site and is a novice web developer who has some free time and would like a small project to practice with and wanted to make this a pet project of sorts to tinker around with and learn from. We don't need to bring in (potentially disinterested) third parties. Until that "right" person comes along, my converting the spreadsheets will suffice. So, you guys a go with this plan? ALSO, DO REMEMBER I WANT TO TAKE THIS THING THROUGH THE PRO BOWL!!! |

Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by StegRock on Jan 1st, 2005, 1:47pm So, Jim, Jer, is this how we are going to proceed? Or,...? I will help get things started the first week as school is out until the 10th. I would like the rules to be laid out very clearly, as a clearly enumerated list/in easy-to-follow outline format. I will look back at FourTwoOh's stuff and get on that and then start up a registration thread. From there, the ball is in you all's court with respect to running the stats and getting that stuff to me and such. |

Title: Re: Post-season fantasy contest opportunity!!! Post by bgsgfan on Jan 2nd, 2005, 1:50am I am definitely in! Already have spreadsheet mostly ready according to the rules 4-2-0 used and have players input (based loosely on fomat previously used) for teams that are definitely in playoffs (and NYJ - they seem to be a good bet). Mainly looking for the rules we will use this year and the players that will be available for use. Curious to see how the Pro Bowl will fit in with respect to only being able to use a player once. Also curious as to the reasoning behind limiting the available players per NFL team. |

EXCELLENT! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Quote:
Just add it on... KISS... You can't use a guy twice still... It might seem a bit herky-jerky to the guy unable to think outside the box, [smiley=inthebox.gif] but, really, it should work just fine. Quote:
Yea, that was something FourTwoOh did that I did not like. Unless I hear something persuasive as to why it should be done that way, I say scrap it! Not to mention, it seems to just be additional work. |
