Title: 2005 Total Post-season Contest on "the Gridiron"
Post by StegRock on Jan 5th, 2005, 12:23am
We're lookin' to kick off a great new tradition here on "the Gridiron", a one-of-a-kind post-season fantasy football contest to knock your socks off, one that uniquely takes you through ALL 5 WEEKS of the post-season!

Here are the simple rules and guidelines:

1) Lineups - Each week your lineup will consist of three players, 1 QB, 1 RB and 1 RC (WR or TE).  COMPLETE lineups are due by kickoff of the first game of the weekend!!!

2) Scoring - Simple... 1 point per yard, 60 points per touchdown.

3) Schedule - From Wildcard Weekend through the Pro Bowl...
    Wildcard Weekend - Saturday/Sunday, January 8th & 9th
    Divisional Playoffs - Saturday/Sunday, January 15th & 16th
    Conference Championships - Sunday, January 23rd
    Super Bowl XXXIX - Sunday, February 6th
    AFC-NFC Pro Bowl - Sunday, February 13th

4) The HITCH - You can only use a player once, i.e., once you have used a particular player, that player is unavailable to you again, i.e., you canNOT use any one player twice!!!  If you do so, you will get ZERO points for that player for that week.

Here is how it the contest will be administrated:

1) Weekly Lineup Submission - You are to submit your lineups either to our member BarnabyWilde a.k.a. Jim O'Dell by instant message here on "the Gridiron":
(Direct Link) http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?action=imsend;to=Barnaby_Wilde;

or via the following thread:
http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=56;action=display;num=1105039199.

IT IS UP TO YOU TO AVOID USING A PLAYER TWICE as per the rules.  Contacting you to tell you you made a mistake is NOT Jim's job.  And, do NOT submit your lineups late, please!  COMPLETE lineups are due by the kickoff of the first game of the weekend!

2) Score Tallying and Reporting - Our member bgsgfan a.k.a. Jeremy Miller will tabulate everybody's scores on a spreadsheet and we will report everybody's scores and the standings every week.  A message will be appended to THIS thread with a link to the spreadsheet every week.

You can check things out on the web:
in HTML format at -
http://www.ffplayers.com/postseasoncontest/postseason.htm;
and in Excel format at -

I will be in charge of the lineups and getting them over to Jeremy. I'd like for everyone to submit me their 3 person lineup via private messages here on the Gridiron. PLEASE, NO EMAILS!. Or, if you'd like, you can post them on the lineup thread, if you don't mind others seeing your choices before game time. Once games start, I'll post everyone's lineups for all to see.

The initial message on this thread has been updated with 1) IMPORTANT clarifications and further eludicidations and explanations of the rules and guidelines of the contest and 2) IMPORTANT administrative information, such as a direct link to IM BarnabyWilde by way of and to the lineup submission thread!  I HIGHLY suggest your perusing it thoroughly (even if you have already read it)!  Thank you. I hear what you are saying.

If you download the Excel version you can sort to your heart's content (as long as you know what you are doing in Excel). The caveat is that I only input stats for the players that were used (i.e. no matter how many times you sort the "WC Stats" Reggie Wayne will not appear).

Hey guys!  I must apologize.  When I start something I definitely like to see it through.  Unfortunately, I did not get my line-up in this week.   [smiley=downthetubes.gif]  I lost power to my home  this weekend and unfortunately, my line-up was the last thing on my mind (great timing... no heat for our 1st real cold spell in Central Pennsylvania in 2005).  I will submit a line-up going forward but just wanted to let you guys know (especially BW) that I didn't just blow this off.  I appreciate the time that is being put into contest!!!

hi guys -

okay I have a question!!! <<raising my hand>> --
what do we do if we historically have picked players that end up winning the S.B. ticket.  We wont be able to pick those players again.

i.e. someone who's already picked mcnabb and then this week picks brady... and the eagles (heaven help us) and the Pats go to the bowl... how are we solving that pesky qb issue... ?

(or am i missing something - which is quite likely these days) -  [smiley=dancin.gif]

Who will be left for the Superbowl and who plays in the Pro Bowl is all part of the strategy.  That's why people were playing lesser QBs to save others for later. [smiley=goodrevil.gif]

If you missed the talk about the Pro Bowl rosters, you can find them on nfl.com.

Like Callie said, it is all part of the strategy. It is real simple who you should pick at QB this week if you  REALLY think about it.

I would just like to offer my  [smiley=twocents.gif] regarding the order of finish thus far, particularly speaking of my last place stance in the ranking amongst the participants who have turned in a lineup every week.

I think it would BEE better to separate the participants who have turned in a lineup every week from the ones who haven't. Only BEEcause I don't feel as if I should BEE ahead of anyone in the rankings regardless of their situation (submitting a lineup or not).

I am in last place and should BEE portrayed that way regardless of my excuses (ooooh I have many too - my underwear was way to tight [smiley=sumo.gif] when making my picks due to it over-drying during a "sunbathing my royal Bee-Hivey" session [smiley=secret.gif] (in january mind you [smiley=whistle.gif])  in ever-so hot hot hot the florida sun, ahem.

Okay, first let me preface that I hope Jeremy is well and not in any trouble, health-wise or otherwise.  However, this thing is beginning to lose its steam here.  By the same token, this thing is hitting the stages that are easiest to process:  Conference Championships and, moreover, Super Bowl Sunday should be a snap to process compared to Wild Card Weekend and the Divisional Playoff games,... more games, more possible permutations of lineups.  Has ANYBODY heard from Jeremy?  I have sent him two e-mails now (one to his @Yahoo.com address and one to his @FantasyFootballer.com address) and have not seen hide nor hair of him!  Again, I hope he is okay.  On the other hand, I hope the [smiley=footballsmiley.gif] is not being dropped here.  Can anybody else try to make contact with him?  I'll try to give him a phone call tonight, but I won't get home until quite late (perhaps too late for it to be appropriate to call him).  Another more proactive option,... if any one of you is Excel-savvy enough and have 45 or so minutes to spare, you could download the ".xls" version of the workbook (the link is in the initial post of this thread) and give a whack at processing the Conference Championships.  If you succeed, just send the sheet to me by e-mail.  I don't think I am going to have the time to do this, at least not until Friday afternoon/evening.  PLEASE RESPOND!!!  Thank you.

It doesn't take a lot of Excel knowledge, but it does take two other things.

One is the rosters of the people who PM'd them in.  They won't show up on the thread.  Also, I'm ashamed to admit it, but in the usual places I go for the game stats, the game stats for CC weekend are not up anymore.

If you can guide me to the info I would need, I'll do it tomorrow if you still need me to do it.  And let us know about how Jeremy is! ?.?.?

Fellas, I'm heading home for the weekend.  Probably will not be back on the internet until Monday.  I have not yet received the spreadsheet from Jeremy.  He must be very busy.  So, Jim's scoring list above is what we are going to have to go by at least for the time being.  Sorry, guys. :-[

I'm sorry I bugged out. I don't really have an excuse, or logical reason. If I tried to explain it would sound bizarre or whiny.

If anyone would like me to email them the file before Steggie is able to set it up, leave me a pm.

Here are the scores I calculated. The bolded items relate to discrepancies between Jim's computations and mine. Most are just a point or 2, however Walker Boh's and KKS's are relatively significant - if someone could doublecheck those I'd appreciate it (it'll be easier to check next week after Steggie posts the charts - or I can email the file).

Jim posts these on the lineup thread soon after kickoff. I generally doublecheck them against what the individuals posted, and or any contact they made with me and ask him to verify any discrepancies. There were no diffences for the last set of games.

Also, I'm ashamed to admit it, but in the usual places I go for the game stats, the game stats for CC weekend are not up anymore.

I always use NFL.com, here is the link for the Philly/Atl game. http://www.superbowl.com/gamecenter/live/NFL_20050123_ATL@PHI The NE/Pit debacle is linked from that page (and vice/versa). From the NFL's home page, you can get to any "GameCenter" by clicking on the "Scores" link near the top of the page.

It will be late tomorrow nite or possibly tuesday nite before I wrap this up. Other than the following, it is ready to go:

1. I didn't see lineups from 4 regulars.
2. Pigskin Jo used Marvin Harrison as her receiver, according to her post, but I believe she already used him.
3. I gave Tony_O Chad (the lower-scoring, and more frequently used of the Johnson receivers)

Guys... and gals, I just want to say, "Mission accomplished!"  Speaking for myself here (and hopefully others), though the game did not go my way with respect to this and it really wasn't a very good game especially vis-a-vis last year's scoring fest, I TOTALLY enjoyed the Pro Bowl last night in a way that I never could have imagined.  Bringing fantasy football, at least in this light kind of way, on through the whole post-season including the Pro Bowl, was a total treat.  It gave some reasonable modicum of meaning to an otherwise meaningless game.  Even though it was basically the beginning and end of my night fantasy-wise, I was jumping up and down and cheering like a little kid in his feetsy pajamas when Harrison caught that long touchdown in the first quarter.  In contrast, if it wasn't for our little contest here, I may not have even been watching the game.  This year, thanks to fantasy football and all of YOU all's participation in our contest here, I can say for the first time ever that I enjoyed ALL 22 weeks of the NFL season.  AWESOME!!!  Again, thank you all for joining in!!! [smiley=bow.gif] I look forward to getting the final results and awarding the victor by putting his or her name in lights on the front page of our, in its first year, "TOTAL Post-season Contest" web site.

[smiley=trophy.gif]Yeah Baby! [smiley=trophy.gif]

That was close! Literally a last second decision to change my receiver from Johnson to Harrison won it for me... [smiley=options.gif]  (that and a monster performance from Manning in week one of the playoffs against a team that escapes me at this time... [smiley=uh.gif] [smiley=shrug.gif] [smiley=whistle.gif])

Thanks to bgsgfan, BarnabyWilde and Steg for running the show... you guys did a great job!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
