Title: GBRFL LIVE On-line Draft Discussion Thread Post by StegRock on Jul 21st, 2005, 11:10pm The GBRFL plans to maintain a running list of the picks for their annual nine-round re-stocking draft from beginning to end here "between the 20's" on "the Gridiron". Besides the entertainment value and the value as a resource for everybody of doing this, it was a practical league purpose that inspired the idea. It allows the two GBRFLers that will be remotely participating to follow the draft pick-by-pick as it unfolds and be able to make their picks right on the thread instead of having to call them in. They also can increase their participation by making use of "the Gridiron Chatroom". In any event, we look forward to doing our thang here and invite all of our esteemed Gridironers to look on and join in the discussion. Our meeting is scheduled to start at HIGH NOON (EST) on Sunday. We'll probably commence drafting sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 after our pre-draft activities like our awards ceremony and rules discussion, the latter of which will be huge this year. So, please, drop on by and join in on the GBRFL fun this Sunday! |

[smiley=woohoo.gif] As for participating in discussion, in general, I don't know how that's going to manifest. Of those of us who will be in attendance, only one us, at least at one time, probably me, will be logged in. As far as the "awards 'ceremony'", an inflated term mind you (even though the plaques, in fact, are PHAT as hell), goes, it doesn't lend itself to much of a cyber manifestation. Hell, the third place guy is not even accepting his plaque; I don't mean just that he's not attending (he's down in Miami); I mean he doesn't want his plaque. [smiley=annoyed.gif] Saves me a few bucks, but I still don't like it... [smiley=no.gif] Anyway, it's going to go like this... [smiley=podium.gif] 1 - Champ - Yours Truly, Steg [smiley=palmtree.gif] 2 - Gonzo [smiley=texan.gif] 3 - Plaqueless dickhead [smiley=dick.jpg] Not much else to say except... On the other hand, with respect to the rules discussion, especially that hot one regarding incorporating the post-season (all the way through the Pro Bowl), the GBRFL2ers' getting on in the chatroom (or the related thread on the GBRFL board) and discussing it yourselves a bit or making well-thought-out posts (of course, only after mindfully perusing the thread on the GBRFL board and getting yourselves up to speed on this complicated issue) is something we would look at and could even affect our decision-making process. ... How I ultimately envisioned this when I was thinking it through and made the post above was that there would be a pick thread and a discussion thread (probably this one). You guys, including the two remotely located GBRFLers, could comment on or discuss the picks as the draft is going on. Those of us at the draft would participate as best as possible in the discussion, probably limitedly, on the day of the draft, but, of course, could add to the discussion later on. |

Will the rules changes be implemented into the deuce league or will they merely provide a model for possible changes should the owners in the GBRFL2 decide to effect them? I don't ask because it will have some influence over whether I participate or not - I likely won't be able to check in at all because of work and family activities already scheduled. One more of our GBRFLers, DOLFAN a.k.a. Joe Parsons, as it turns out, will not be in attendance. He will, however, be participating on-line. So, now, those of you Gridironers who will be around here on Sunday for remote participation in the GBRFL festivities will have THREE GBRFLers to hang out with on-line. Enjoy! ... By the way, another possible treat,... you (GBRFL2ers in particular) are aware who actually has early draft picks to work with for once, right? [smiley=whistle.gif] Yours truly, whose m.o. is typically to jettison early draft picks, has gone about collecting a whopping EIGHT picks of the first 17!!! [smiley=ohshit.gif] It did cause me to dismantle my squad, especially my RB corps, and cost me Priest Holmes, Jamal Lewis, Brian Westbrook, Brian Griese, Jimmy Smith and Rod Smith, though. ... Anyway, I'm trying to remember [smiley=thinking.gif] if I even know how to draft in the first round, where I have three picks, one lottery pick third in the pecking order and the numbers six and seven picks. I also have three lottery picks in the second round, numbers one, two and three in the pecking order. I was saved from falling... no jumping headstrong into a HUGE pitfall... Here are all the bump-ups I got... 1) By way of how the lottery went, I got a stroke of luck [smiley=shamrock.gif] and with it Cedric Benson at 1.01 instead of getting the pick I was "slated" to get 1.03 with which I would have taken J.J. Arrington. Benson, contract sitch aside, is the safest pick of this year's rookie running back class, who also brings some huge upside potential to the DEEP keeper-league fantasy round-table. 2) At 1.06 I got Alex Smith rather than Maurice Clarett, who I stupidly [smiley=dunce.gif] had my heart set on taking there, being the "i'rash'ional" (= "rash" + "irrational") Donkos [smiley=broncofan.gif] fan that I am. I (was) snapped back to reality, [smiley=doseofreality.gif] thank God. [smiley=pray.gif] Smith is a WAY safer bet and MAJOR upgrade, moreover, in the GBRFL format and given my team's needs. 3) At 2.01 and 2.02 I had myself slated to get Mark Clayton and Ciatrick Fason. Instead, I got Troy Williamson and Mike Williams, both of whom I had slated to go in the top eight. And, yet,... 4) At 2.06 and 2.07, where I had myself reaching for Matt Jones and Adrian McPherson, I got the aforementioned Ciatrick Fason and Mark Clayton, the latter of whom rounds out my getting ALL FOUR top receiver prospects from this rookie class: Edwards, Williams, Williamson and Clayton. (Add on Reggie Brown in the 8th round and you might be inclined to say the top five.) At least two of these guys will pan out, I'm sure. Overall, I think Steggie's future looks bright and, contrary to popular opinion, the old Stegger here may still make some noise in '05. [smiley=hmmmm.gif] ... I had Arrington a distant 4th on my list because of his size, even though he has a good shot to have the best rookie year. I had Ronnie Brown at 2. I admit to not even hearing of Williams or Brown because they were drafted so everything I know is from FF books, etc. Nevertheless, I felt very fortunate to get Williams at 2 after getting screwed in the lottery once again. Had I not known that Stegeman was going to take Benson, I would have considered trading up as I did last year, although I would not have given more than a mid round pick given the toss up between 1 and 3 on my list. I don't think you can question Steg taking the receivers in the second round. Those were the best players available at that point. You can question his getting of that many 2nd round picks, but him having the picks forced him to take these RCs when all the good rookie QBs and RBs were gone. On the other hand, he is playing the odds hoping for 2 studs, which is very possible 2-3 years from now! With his 4 rings, however, I hope he (and his players) suck for those 2-3 years. |
