Title: 2006 CBFL Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread
Post by StegRock on Jul 13th, 2006, 10:09pm
On this, the very first post of this thread, I will maintain position-by-position cheatsheets.  This will also act as the CBFL Draft commentary thread.  PLEASE do NOT put comments on the picks and administration/league discussion threads on the CBFL board!  Put comments on picks and how the draft is unfolding HERE!  Thank you! Like I stated earlier, in the incorrect thread, I think the top 3 could all have gone #1 overall (maybe a stretch for LT, but anyways...)

Portis and Barber were the for sure next 2 in my book...I just had a hard time choosing, especially since I am a Giants fan.

Larsen is right, the next few selections are going to be interesting to say the least...

Believe it or not,... I would have taken Edgerrin James at #4.  And, while the next handful of picks are, for sure, going to be "interesting" as Larsen suggests, I agree with your assessment that #4 is where there is an "early tier drop" (not :'( ... or maybe so ;)) and a tough pick to make... as is testified to, in some way, by my very post here.

I had debated if I would take Jordan or S Jax over Peyton if they both slid to the 1.10 pick but luckily I didn't have to make that call...

RBs who needs those guys anyway?

I was liking Rudi at the 5 hole :-/ after Portis, I was a little shocked seeing Tiki go, but yet very pleased.

I'm sitting here ready to go!!!! [smiley=nervous.gif]

I'm just stoked that I got Jordan (which I figured I would) but you never know with drafts.....

On to round 2!!

I was was just as happy to get Steven Jackson at number 9.

He could easiely produce like a number 8 pick  ;D

In my humble opinion i think Lamont Jordan was a bit of a reach.

Please dont take it personally. ;D

Well, in any format, L.J. is a first rounder.  And why not have him go to a die hard Raider fan ;D

i like the back to back starting running back picks by larsen89.  you have a tough drafting position in the early rounds and i think you made the best of it. reuniting the auburn backfield should be sweet!

Hey thanks!!!  I'm never thrilled about picking in the #11 - #12 holes, as I watched the day unfold yesterday, literally for hours :-/ , contemplating  [smiley=thinking.gif] what I am going to do, I was pleasantly surprised and happy seeing Barber go at #5, then when Manning went, then I started  [smiley=pray.gif] that "the dog" would pass on a RB !! [smiley=havinablast.gif]

I like my choices, they are both young and explosive, we'll see what happens.

i'm kind of in that spot with a mid pick in the second round coming up and then 1st in the 3rd.  do i try to land a 2nd starting running back or go for best available at another position.  that is the fun part.

i have always thought that the draft was the best part of the fantasy football season so this league is great!

I'm excited for KJ to do great things in a Martz system and Marinelli can't stop raving about him. Couple that with the end of 04 and I like his chances.... It was a tough decision between him and Westbrook but to be honest I fear Ryan Moats more than Brian Calhoun as far as another RB stealing touches.  I believe Westbrook will line up out at WR more this year but also figure he'll be keyed upon since he and LJ are the only major threats at this point. (I like Moats too, but he still needs to prove himself)  With Martz and all the WRs in Det... I think KJ is in for a big year. If this were Pts/rec I'da gone with Westy though.

Also a little surprised with the Dog going WR/WR in rds 1 and 2... Not sure off hand where his rd 3 pick is but he could be in a hurt when it comes to rbs....

But that's what makes it fun!

I am some what surprised w/the selection of Westbrook here, I wouldn't touch him personally, seems like he can't stay on the field for for the entire season, I don't know....  injuries really worry me with him, but hey!!!!  Happy to see him drafted!!! ;D

I was also surprised with the Westbrook pick.  I was actually planning on picking him  up in round  3.

obviously that 'aint happinin now.  But hey, still can't complain with Steve Smith :D

Steal of the draft!!! (IMO)  McGahee at #22???  [smiley=ohshit.gif] Definately should have went before Westbrook and Dom. Davis!!!!

Great pick getting him here.

I almost took him, but couldn't pull the trigger. Had to go with Moss as the top tiered WRs were all flying off the board.

I would disagree.  I was not even torn between McGahee and him.   But remember, Houston now has Kubiak as coach and he did not take Bush #1.  With Kubiak being committed to running game, I think Davis is in for a big year.

Yes, I remember, and actually living in Houston, I get to see and hear it all. :-/  Reggie Bush or no Reggie Bush, I'm not a Davis fan, so the passing on Reggie really never swayed my feelings towards Davis, I'm just not a fan and IMO, just like Westbrook, there is no way I'd touch Davis, with the likes of McGahee on the board.  But everyone has there own instincts!!!  Thanks,Im really not a huge McGahee fan but i had him ranked #16 overall on my player list and to get him at #22 was a GREAT DEAL.

I am a little concerned Buffalo"s offense but their was no way he was getting past me.

This 3.4 pick was agonizing.... I so would rather have had the straight serpentine draft format....  In the end I went with the surest thing and that was Boldin.  I had guys I liked more, and guys who have higher upside, but figured that Boldin was the safe choice....

Antonio Gates was a nice pick in this round.  He gives you WR stats in the TE position.  In this format that was a strong pick!!

I also think Antonio was a good pick.  I think you probably could have got carson in the next round, but you did intimidate Chump into picking his QB early IMO

is this a beginning of a run on QBs?  i was hoping to sneak gates onto my lineup in the 4th round.  i guess that was a bit too optimistic.

Well,  :-/ I had two WR's in mind instead of Palmer in round 3, Wayne & Chambers, and there they went!!! [smiley=wavinbye.gif]

I debated  [smiley=thinking.gif] on the Palmer pick, but grabbing him last year in the 5th & 6th rds. wasn't going to cut it if I wanted him this year, guess I thought I'd roll the dice w/him instead of letting someone else. [smiley=fingerscrossed.gif]

Those of us who watch the E-A-G-L-E-S every week and follow them in the offseason know that #1 The Eagles plan to run the ball more than last year and #2 Their is really no one to throw the ball to except Westbrook.  He should be good for a combined 150 to 200 yards every week.

All RB's are an injury risk.  I'll take my chances on the Eagles number 1 offensive option.

I think BW got a steal at 3.10 in Chester Taylor..... Thought about him also at 3.4... Riskier but could easily do better than the rbs chosen in rd 2.....

This league, being what it is, makes it important to get the top players at any position......I think I landed what will be the top #1 WR, #2 WR, and TE.......now I guess I will work on Kicker and Defense since they have not been selected yet.

I really debated on taking him second for that reason, but I took a gamble on round 3 on my sheet and turns out it didn't really matter to me anyway since you snatched him before me  ;)

Which is why I took Steve Smith over Moss.  As you all know, uhmm, I like the raiders.  I don't think Jordan was much of a stretch at where I drafted him, but Moss unfortunately isn't really worth a number 17 overall draft pick.  BW drafted him pretty much where he belongs.  Keeping this real is what will really help us for next months drafts.

I think so far we are doing an OUTSTANDING job drafting (pre-ranking) our players.  I just can't wait for the mid rounds where the  [smiley=money.gif] is earned.

Well...

I now have my 4 RBs as I made my picks.

I wanted Chester Taylor, but he was swiped from me.

So, I went with Reuben Droughns who has been pretty solid in Cleveland and has really had no competition from any of the other backs.  There were other backsthat I was contemplating from other teams, but many of them  have competition or TD vultures.

And then, for my 4th pick I took an extremely high risk/high reward player.  My decision for this was because with this format I do not pick again until late into the 5th round.  While tempted by a few WR, Joseph Addai has the potential to put up some monster numbers with the Colts offense.

So far I am very happy with my picks. Portis in round 1, Moss in 2, Chester Taylor in 3 and now Reggie Bush in round 4. Now I have to wait, since I don't pick again until 5.08.

My favorite pick this year just went...  Last year I took Steve Smith earlier than most cuz he was my pick and I skipped Roy Williams for Boldin, hoping somehow he'd fall to me.... Alas... now I have to figure something out again....

I think Roy Williams is a good pick.  I think he is highly underrated and if healthy with an average QB, may be a force. Was hoping he would linger a while.

(Commentary as site admin) Cheatsheets in initial post have been updated through the latest pick. [smiley=builder.gif]

(Commentary as Steg) Two of the picks I just put up, consecutive ones,... [smiley=yikes.gif] I won't elaborate on my thoughts too much (more here than I already have throughout the boards), but, suffice it to say, two dudes can be had later that will very likely be as good IF NOT BETTER (WAY better in one case... by mid-season, at least) than these two.  Doesn't seem like the right m.o. for a league in which there are NO transactions... unless they..., but it's still too early have taken these two.  There is actually A LOT of risks being taken,... unnecessarily as I see it.  Again,... I don't want to "force any hands", so... [smiley=zipit.gif] But, I have A LOT to say...  Maybe I'll say it in the end with a little Draft recap and analysis (though I'm really not into that)... [smiley=whistle.gif] I do see one strategy that may just be being blindly walked into but that I see the beauty in and that, in this format, could work (if it's, in fact, a strategy that will be maintained throughout, and not just dumb luck or whatever).  In fact, it's a path those two aforementioned guys need to follow (though they've already made their mistakes as I see it).

Just say it already!!!!  This is the place for commentary, and yes, you too can comment.  Tell us what the bungled strategy is.

I can tell you that I am a high risk, high reward with my RBs.  I am either going to live by the RBs or get killed by them.  But heck, the scrubs I chose last year seem to do ok for me  ;)

Yea, I thought about taking him over C. Martin, but I don't think Houston has quite the taking over power that Bush will have.

That wasn't a kicker I just saw at the beginning of round six, was it?   [smiley=ohshit.gif]

And Neil Rackers no less? Have you looked at his career stats? It appears to me that 2005 was more an aberration than the norm. Prior to 2005 he was a career 69% field goal kicker. Last season he had 42 FG attempts -- a VERY high number that can easily be explained by the fact that the Cards couldn't run the ball into the endzone (2 rushing TDs on the year).  I'd like to think that they're going to be a bit better at it this year with Edge holding the ball instead of Marcel Shipp.

I would love to hear an explanation justifying that pick...

One of the best (value) picks of the draft was just made a pick ago by my homey, the novice [smiley=newbie.gif] of the group... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

And,... I'll add that The_Dog's picking Benson saved the day for him.  In fact, I'm thinking it was a very calculated move on his part to take Jones:  he thought he had to take Jones over Benson because Jones may be still being valued higher than Benson by most (fools) when, really, what he wanted to do was lock up the Bears backfield so as to capitalize on Benson... and, perhaps, a preseason or in-season trade of Jones (to a team like Indy, who is pressing for a championship, in which case he'd blow up). [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

All of the aforementioned should indicate clearlywhat the two back-to-back picks from earlier that I didn't like were.  Based on what I perceive to be The_Dog's strategy, I rescind my criticism of the Jones pick,... though I do think he was rolling some pretty big dice there.  But, hey, it paid off!

Good job, Dog, Chili!!! [smiley=twothumbsup.gif]

I agree that Gore was a good pick, however, I question your logic that Benson and Dayne are the best picks.  They are not necessarily bad picks mind you, however, I do not feel in any shape way or form that either is a steal.  Benson has to deal with Jones and Dayne is not even the starter yet is he?  Remember Tatum Bell?

what I hear is that Dayne will be the starter and Bell will work as a change of pace back.

Also the Bears run the ball 30 times a game with 20-25 carries going to one back and if I have both then I am assured of those carries to get me some solid points.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Dayne will never cut it, it's just my opinion, but they didn't invest a 2nd round pick in Bell, to give a (what i would call) a journey man RB the ball , but hey, that's just me.

Only 11 NFL teams scored FEWER rushing TDs than the Bears (.69 rushing TDs per game) last season.  Did their offense improve that much in the offseason? Their O-line just got older. They still have a shaky WR corps. They still don't have a TE threat. Really, the only thing that they did was add Brian Griese to be the #2 QB. Thomas Jones had 1335 yards 9 tds last year.......with no quarterback and everyone keying on the run. This year Rex is back with the very capable Griese backing him up, this is a major upgrade over last year.

Whoever is running the ball for Chicago will have another solid season. Chances are it will be Benson who showed some real signs of being able to break away and Chicago sportcasts are saying how hard he has been working......last year an injury and coming in late to camp hurt him

I got a lot to say, but not enough energy (right now) to do it...  Again, perhaps, at the conclusion of things, I'll do an analysis.  I just want to comment on one thing...  Comparing the Jones-Benson situation in Chicago with the Jones-Barber situation in Dallas with the analogies being drawn between Benson and Barber, on the one hand, and the Joneses, on the other, is flat-out erroneous and should not have been acted on as was here.  Barber doesn't really have a legit chance of starting over Jones barring injury, which, granted, Julius has shown a proclivity for, whereas, Benson, according to many like me, will probably start over Jones... sooner than later.  One other quickie,... if you think Bell will take over Anderson's role, you're the one drinking the Kool-Aid.  I'm not going to write my take again here on this thread.  I'm just going to refer you to my latest post (of about a week ago) on this thread, http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1057342002 and my FF-specific Broncos reports, http://www.ffpro.com/teamreports/broncos/broncos-footballinfoframes.htm.  Bottom line, if Chili just got the starting running back for the Broncos ala Mike Anderson in '05 or perhaps an upgrade therefrom here in the sixth round, he got a HUGE steal.  Meanwhile, an investment in Bell, who at least has just as much of a chance of NOT starting as Dayne, you MUST admit, was made 27 picks earlier.  To me, that's a steal... in VERY blunt, definable terms.

First of all, anyone has to admit Barber looked pretty damn good in Jones replacement last year, WHO I remind has NOT been healthy in two season, there for WHY would I let the owner of Julius have Barber as well, when I'm a fan of Barber, WHO I watched at the U of M and is VERY capable.  Thank you.

Secondly, the slam of me taking Bell 27 picks earlier, you seem to be a smart man Steg, but if YOU honestly think that a rumbling bumbling Dayne WHO couldn't cut it w/the Giants, and was pretty much buried in the depth chart WHO actually had what, one-two good games with Denver is going to be a starter???? Your dreaming.  Not me.  Sure, Bell and Dayne will split alot of carries, it's Bells time, besides you sure made alot of accusations without training camp even being broke yet.

Thirdly, you are right, Jones probably will start in Dallas, but for how long, as been the case.

I'm sure you'll reply with a long winded reply, that it'll get lost in translation, so keep your reply in small words so most of us here can understand!!!! ;)

Look, I realize that there are two (what I consider to be) sound arguments regarding the Broncos RB sitch and neither of them is grounded upon Dayne's performance in New York.  In fact, Bell's track-record with Shanahan in Denver and history of injuries, all of which is subpar, is more relevant than what Dayne did in a totally different context across the country in New York.  I digress...  Look no further than, one, Ed McCaffery - dud in New York, stud in Denver!  Anyway, there is an argument:  1) for Bell (and as a matter of fact against Dayne) and 2) for Dayne (and de facto against Bell).  The argument for Bell is founded on an extrapolation of the numbers he accumulated as a part-time back to those of a full-timer or, at least, Mike Anderson's of a year ago.  This is where ESPN's prediction is coming from.  I happen to think it is naive and, ultimately, wrong.  The argument for Dayne, which is whence PFW, FLF and I are coming, is predicated on who will best fill the specific shoes of the departed Mike Anderson with the belief that the answer to that question is Dayne while Bell continues in the role he filled spectacularly last year.  It just seems like Dayne for Anderson is the natural switch, the one that requires the least disruption of their offense.  Dayne, more than Bell, is surely the more similar back to Anderson.  He won't be nearly as good on the goal-line,... enter Cedric Cobbs,... but he should be an improvement everywhere else.  Why mess with a good thing, which is exactly what replacing Anderson with Bell would be doing?  ...  And, honestly, how the numbers bear out, who knows? [smiley=shrug.gif] You might have two 1,000-yard backs in Denver in '06 and three (add Cobbs) with seven to 10 touchdowns each (and don't rule out Cecil Sapp getting into the mix, as well).  BUT, barring injuries, I guarantee that Bell's numbers will NOT merely be a gaudy extrapolation from part-time to full-time and that it will be Dayne filling Anderson's shoes while Bell's role remains essentially the same, perhaps slightly increased.

Contrary to popular "opinion" (God, that's the second time I've used that horrible word,... and it's early), I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with "my feathers being ruffled".  I just ask that it be done astutely.  That's all.  Your copying-and-pasting of Dayne's numbers with the Giants is tantamount, to me, to talking at me...

ahhhh the great Ron Dayne debate......do you mind if I step in.

I was hoping Dayne would slip a couple of more picks because I wanted him. Dayne in college was in a one cut system for running, he was greatly successful and won the Heisman Trouphy. The Giants drafted him and tried to change him into a big bruising back....he is big, but not bruising.

Denver runs a on cut system.....Dayne while a disappointment his whole career is finally in the right situation. I saw this last year when I drafted him with my last pick in this draft (I actually got to use his numbers one week) I was a year off, but Shanahan must have seen the potential as well by letting Mike Anderson go. If you start in Denver you are a 1000 yard back, please refer to Anderson and Gary.......Dayne will be the steal of this draft and I wish I would have got him.

I was wondering how that would play out, and I must compliment you. Mason had 85 receptions a year ago, with Boller/Wright at the helm. I would think that we could expect (at the very least) a repeat of that performance in 2006.  Nicely done -- not sure I would have had the patience to wait so long for my first WR.

If Dayne can play like he did for old Edgewood HS, watch out. The kid was a monster in South Jersey as a prepster.

Although I'll predict that by the end of the year, there will be two Denver Bells with better stats than Dayne.

Mason was going to be my pick in the 8th round.  I guess I should have took him in the 7th, but hey, I can't complain picking up Rod Smith in the 7th round.

I've noticed this year more than others that the tried and true veterans of years past have REALLY fallen this year in the draft.

So I'm pretty much picking them all up and we'll see if it bites me in the ass or not.

Just one more thing I'd like to throw out there regarding my difference of "opinion" (YIKES! [smiley=yikes.gif] That's the third time I've used it today... :P) with T Lars,... you are taking part in a FantasyFootballer.com/StegRock production here,... and the "official-ish" take of this site, or at least its administrator and Broncos correspondent, is that Dayne's the man...  If this were a Fanball.com- or ESPN.com-run event, sites which "seem", at least, to be of the opposite "opinion" (OH! :-X There I go again... [smiley=no.gif]), and Dayne was taken well ahead of Bell, I'm SURE there would be no punches pulled.  I mean you're on their site going against their position, which, in and of itself, isn't bad or wrong or anything, BUT it seems to indicate that you don't use/consider "in-house" resources as your guide, which, to them, to me, kind of leaves a, maybe not "bad", but "awkward" taste in their... my mouth, especially when you are SO willing to argue the point,... on this very site, again, whose "official-ish" stance you are not in line with.  So, Chili's being a close personal friend of mine notwithstanding, where, logically, "commonsensically" do you think my rooting interests are going to lie?  With all due respect to Larsman's take on the Dayne-Bell sitch, as administrator and Broncos correspondent for this site, they're going to lie with the Chillster... [smiley=shrug.gif] I mean... just out of common sense, when you take part in these kinds of things, you should keep it, at least in the back of your mind, "where you are".  That does NOT mean you have to conform to their opinion.  It just means that you might want to be a little acquiescent and less bold about it if/when you do.  That's all...

Boy,... you uncorked it here today...  In VERY short, here's what I'm observing when I sit back and read what people have to say about Dayne versus Bell...

I find that the (good) arguments for Dayne are intriguing, forward-looking, sound and cogent.
I find that the (good) arguments for Bell are intriguing, forward-looking, sound and cogent.
I find that the (good) arguments against Bell are intriguing, forward-looking, sound and cogent.
BUT, I find that the arguments against Dayne are "same old, same old", backward-looking, unappealing to reason, riddled with trash-talk and, in any event, NOT (very) good.

And, I find that what has gone on on this thread is a case in point of that...  Setting my posts aside, the most well-thought-out post, whether you agree with it or not, regarding Dayne versus Bell is The_Dog's.  The guy who likes Bell over Dayne just goes and copies and pastes Dayne's past stats, which are primarily with the Giants, and the others have little to add to the "debate" except light-hearted trash-talk that includes comments about Kool-Aid and soon-to-be practice-squader Mike Bell.  If I were an onlooker, I would go with my and The_Dog's take if for no other reason than there's an argument there.  That's all...

As awesome as any Bronco RB may be when they (finally) get the starting nod....the sheer fact that you have to wait...and I mean wait (and worry)...on Shanahan's decisions week in and week out make me personally shy away from anyone in the Bronco RB stable! My heart just can't take the "what if's" and "who's it gonna be's" that Shanny throws out there. To me it is kinda' like the Suggs -vs- Green arguement of a couple years back (without the upside of a Denver running game though)! Tennessee is another place I just assume stay away from when talking about choosing an RB from their stable. Point is this...I'd rather get an RB that I know will be the man...point blank...no "if's", "and's" or "but's". If I had to pick one of the Denver RB's, it would be............neither!! I feel the exact way about ALL Bronco's players. you never know what Shanahan is going to do. A couple years ago I had Portis when he was a Bronco and I held my breath every week because you never knew when the "over" thinker, Shanahan, was going to pull Portis out. On more than one occasion, Portis would have 100 plus yards and a TD in the first half and then I would watch him get 3 carries in the second half. From then on I vowed never to have a player coached by Mr. Shanahan.

While I somewhat agree with the sentiments expressed here by MC and Tony (if you read my detailed analysis from that other thread and elsewhere, you'd know that I think that two watered-down 1,000-yard backs are surely a possibility in Denver this year; I actually think that may be what Shanny is going for for personal and on-the-field, strategic reasons), NEVER say NEVER!!!  Then, it becomes a (Fanball-esque) ball-and-chain bias...  Shying away is one thing.  Saying, "NEVER," is a whole nother...  If you were to draft, let's say for arguments sake, Marion Barber or Curtis Martin or Kevan Barlow over Tatum Bell or Ron Dayne, I'd have to call that foolish.  Furthermore, if you had an opportunity to assure yourself Dayne AND Bell (especially in this format), to me, that would be a far cry better than just, let's say, Warrick Dunn or DeShaun Foster or Frank Gore or Reggie Bush or Deuce McAllister, etc.

Agreed Steg.  [smiley=hellyeafunny.gif] Let's just say this. You would be fortunate to have any Denver RB that Shanny decided to stick with as his #1back. Other than that, if you stress over coaching decisions, (as I do)  [smiley=gonecrazy.gif] then owning a Denver RB on gameday is just not worth it.

For the 95% of fantasy leagues in the civilized world, Mordecai's sentiment, (along with Tony_O and Larson, and probably others if I am forgetting anyone) is correct.

If you need to pick 2 starting RB's each week, then it is best to stay away from the Denver RB situation.  Hey, they are a great team, probably will contend for the playoffs again, and Shanahan is just trying to win.  However, the platoon BS is not worth trying to figure out for fantasy purposes. I had Anderson and Bell last season on one team, and it was just plain annoying trying to pick a starter. (only to watch the guy on your bench usually score more points).

I hope all the Denver RBs gain 1,000 yards this year, including Cecil, Cedric and the whole gang.   [smiley=ragin.gif] In fact, it would be awesome if Javon Walker ran a 62 yard end-around every game, this way he will have 1,000 yards too.  However, if you are interested in trying to figure out which RB Shanahan will play most each week, here's a secret:

He doesn't know either  [smiley=secret.gif]

As far as the argument that Dayne will fill the 'Mike Anderson' role, that may turn out to be true, but the first question is, why not just have kept Mike Anderson to fill the 'Mike Anderson' role?

Also note that Dayne has never been an accomplished goalline runner, like the The_Dog said, he's a good fit for the Denver system, but that doesn't mean he can work the goalline like Mike Anderson, Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis or even Tatum Bell.

Also consider that if Shanahan was enamored with Dayne all that much, he wouldn't have tried to trade for Jamal Lewis and Ricky Williams this past off-season.

Dayne had 270 yards for Denver last year, 55 of them on one inspired carry, and one TD, he still has a long way to go if he is going to dispel his well-deserved reputation as a 1st round bust.

But hey, Thomas Jones did it, Dayne couldbe next.

But blind speculation aside, for a #3 RB, in a conventional 'pick your starter' system, Tatum Bell is probably the safe choice.  (And then only if he happens to fall into your lap in like the 6-7th round of your draft, IMO).   It probably comes down to who will be used at the goalline, and right now, that could be Bell.

Phil, that's my whole point...  Except from you, our college and NFL Draft guru, [smiley=bow.gif] I haven't heard hide nor hair of the guy.  With all due respect, I think you get over-enamored with rookies... because of your bent.  From a fantasy perspective, this guy's not even a blip on the radar, at least not mine. [smiley=radar.gif] Quality play in college doesn't equate to stardom in the NFL.  Isn't Ron Dayne, who many of you still want to jeer now, proof in the pudding of that? ?.?.? Isn't Samkon Gado, who many of you still want to cheer now, proof in the pudding of that, vice-versa?  Bottom line, this guy Mike Bell has an uphill battle on a tailback-loaded team.  Why not Cecil Sapp, Phil?  He too seems to fit the Broncos rushing system and is a home-grown "college standout" out of Colorado State.  I guess he's not "rookie enough" anymore, though...???  Mind you,... I'm not saying Mike Bell can't or won't make it.  I'm just saying qua fantasy footballer to put too much thought into him now is wasted motion.

I'd hardly say I get over-enamored with rookies. I just happen to be more aware of them than most others here.  The only two RB rookies that I've even mentioned as having a real shot to be successful in the short term are Joseph Addai (through PMs with another member here) who I believe is an ideal fit for the system he's in, and Mike Bell (who I think can be successful given some breaks, but am not sold on 100% - hence my questions in the other thread).

Honestly, Bell wasn't a star in college. He only ran for 950 yards last season on a bad team. Heck, he wasn't even drafted (a la Samkon Gado).

Obviously he'll have to get past Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne on the depth chart. He'll also have to get past Cedric Cobbs (who is absolutely surmountable) and Cecil Sapp is a fullback who is more useful as a lead blocker and short yardage guy.

I just see an opportunity for Mike Bell, given Denver's history with bringing backs out of nowhere to carry the load.

My reply to that is... you could say that about just about anybody then.  When you put it that way, it's more a function of Denver's rushing system than the player.  And, now we're back around full-circle,... he's got four guys ahead of him.  As for Cecil Sapp, the Broncos list him and, I believe, sincerely consider him to be a FB/TB... like a fella named Mike Anderson once was.  While I don't know college ball and rookies the way you do (which you like to make all too clear with questions like, "Have you even seen him play?", to which you know the answer; hell, I've barely seen Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush play,... but I do just fine in fantasy football), I DO know the NFL, fantasy football and my Broncos, and I've seen NOTHING coming from Broncoland about this guy.  Now, I too could further spell this out by way of a daggery rhetorical question, but I'll refrain... :-/

Well, we shall see how my trio of Vick-Big Ben-Favre at QB does this year: I sure hope better than last years dud trio of Palmer-Pennington-Grossman...which turned into just Palmer. I think I have a nice combo of Potential in Vick, steadiness in Roethlisberger, and savvy leadership (not to mention he'll be throwing alot this year) in Favre to make it work.

I doubt you are really agreeing with my previous statement here, but that's probably because I really didn't make it clear exactly what my point was. [smiley=clown.gif]

My point is :  There is no such thing as a 'Mike Anderson' role.  When you look at the role that Anderson had in the platoon with Bell last year, it was essentially 'I'll start the game with Mike Anderson, and go with him until I feel like putting Tatum Bell in there'.

It was totally unpredictable, and not a function of any predefined 'role' or player assignment, but really a function of how well Anderson was doing at the particular moment.  You know what I mean ?  For example, some teams use a primary back on 1st and 2nd down, and then somebody else on 3rd for example, the Mike Anderson/ Tatum Bell platoon was nothing like a clearly delineated design.

Which brings us to this year, if last year's history is any guideline, Ron Dayne will be granted no specified expectation of playing time.  He will probably play only as long as he is effective.  If he starts the game, and gets stuffed on the first 3 plays, you may not see him again until the next week.

Similiarly, if he shows he can't punch it in from the 2 yard line, he won't be used at the goalline.

So, you may be right about Dayne, but it really comes down to how much faith you have that he will get the job done.  The Broncos running game is not like Detroit was last year, for example, where Kevin Jones could suck all year and still stay in the game.  In Denver, under Shanahan, if you are having a bad day, you will be pulled so that you can continue having your bad day on the sidelines.  If you have consecutive bad days, you may not play again for a while.

Does that make sense ?

There is no doubt you are correct about splitting time with Dayne/Bell.......the only answer is to have both, and in this leagues format if Dayne gives you 20 yards one week with no tds it doesn't hurt you because he was not a top 4 round draft pick so he is your 3rd back and his points only count if he has a good week.

Dayne is a great pick in this format, and I think he will be a steal in any format by week 5.

You do realize that basically any TE at this point is a crap shoot right?  Pope has has good as a chance as anyone.    All you can ask from a TE now is to have 1 or 2 blow up games of catching two TDs.....

Awwww,... bluck... :P Any little detail, ESPECIALLY in this league where there are NO transactions, can be the difference.  I don't disagree that it's a crap shoot, but there are AT LEAST four tight-ends (OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, and I don't even know tight-ends that well because of the GBRFL set-up) who SHOULD (have) be(en) drafted that I'd place my bets on before Pope and Lewis...  Come on!  If Chili and/or kc end up "Pink-Slip Recipients" by 10 or 20 points or less or miss out on a championship by such a margin and a better pick at #2 tight-end could have made the difference, not an impossible scenario, what do we say then?  ...  Look, I'm all for havin' fun and making some "creative" picks, and if there is ANY position at which you are able to do that MOST "creatively", #2 tight-end is surely it.  BUT, those two picks are way too "creative" for my liking (based on who's still on the board).

Leonard Pope is a pretty good pick, he was considered by many to be the 2nd best TE prospect this year (after obviously Vernon Davis).  Remember Heath Miller last year ?  He was actually fairly solid.

Steg has a point that he went slightly early.  There are probably 2 other TEs that should have went before Pope, but like Dirk said, will those two guys actually do that much better?

Title: Re: 2006 CBFL Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread
Post by Oakland4life on Jul 20th, 2006, 8:59pm
My personal take on the value of TE's is pretty simple really.  Most of them (not the top 5) ARE pretty much the same.

What is going to make the difference is the quality of their wide receivers.  If the team doesn't have a quality receiving core, the TE will at a very least get more touches on the ball then a team with great WR's.

So my take on Pope, (which is on a team with GREAT receivers) is he might just be a good, or even great TE.  BUT, he will be very limited in touches on the ball every game.  So I wouldn't expect to much from him this year, UNLESS Boldin's knee goes out again  [smiley=shrug.gif]

That's a good point, I've heard a theory that Jason Witten's numbers might actually go down slightly this year because Terrell Owens likes to operate in the middle of the field.

Having no decent complimentary receivers is probably a bad thing too.  (Although then again, I think the Gates, Heap and Gonzalez situations support your point, as the Chargers, Ravens and Chiefs receivers are pretty below average).

Following up on O4l's post,... the Cardinals had like 400 yards and 2 touchdowns (2 TD's,... isn't that what DD noted would be the "game" or two you're hoping for out of your #2 tight-end?) to tight-ends IN TOTAL last year,... and now they have a FANTASTIC pass-receiving tailback in Edge to go along with a receiving corps of Fitzgerald, Boldin and even Johnson for that matter.  You can't bank on this guy for anything more than 200 and 1.  Come on...  It's a TERRIBLE pick... as is the Lewis pick!

Adam Bergen and Eric Edwards pretty much suck, so you have attribute some of the problem there.  (btw, you are forgetting about Teyo Johnsons 30 yards).

Bryant Johnson would have been a terrible pick, but seriously, look at the TEs left, there are only two that could arguably be considered a better value than Pope (and Bubba Franks is not on that list).

No comment on the Lewis pick, I don't like him as much.

Leonard Pope has an excellent chance to be the #1 TE for the Cards this year. He's a decent blocker (which will be needed considering the O-line) so he'll be on the field quite a bit. He's also a dangerous red-zone threat because of his size. He'll easily beat out Eric Edwards and should also beat out Adam Bergen.

Marcedes Lewis was widely recognized as the top TE prospect heading into the fall of 2005 when he was a senior at UCLA.  A freakish display of athleticism by Vernon Davis at the Combine is the only thing that kept him from being the first TE selected in the draft. Lewis will likely be the #2 TE behind Kyle Brady (although I would not be surprised to see him emerge as the #1 since Brady's best days are well behind him). The Jags are desperate for pass-catchers with the retirement of Jimmy Smith, and Lewis can catch passes (much better than he blocks).

I don't see either of them being bad picks as TEs, although there are a couple other TEs that I would've selected before them.

Allright gents, we are in the home stretch!!  I look forward to the analysis of the teams when this thing is over.

In my quick glance, I will tell you that I like Rickgpin's and Barnaby's team.  They both have what you are looking for in this league, a home run hitter.  The guy who is not mr consistant, but the guys who will put a few games with multiple TDs.  Of course, I like my team too, BUT, I am either going to kick butt in this league  or fall flat on my face with my running backs......

further analysis should be done, but off the top of my head, there are a number of teams that appear real close and injuries and playing above expectation will separate them from the pack.  i like chumpzilla with a premieir rb duo, te, pk, and defense.  i also like primetime's team with tom brady, steven jackson, and chicago's defense.

should be a good season! [smiley=booya.gif]

Steg......Use your head buddy.....

If Warner and Brooks go down my chances of winning are slim to none. I don't think the likes of Rex Grossman are going to save me when he hasn't played a whole season either. There are no other starting QBs out there that have a safe job or that are any good. So my best play was Brooks back up. If it turns out to be Wright then it is a bad move, but I don't see that happening.

I don't think any of these teams will win if they are using the stats of the 3rd QB they selected.

Yes, it's true, I'm only entering my 9th year of fantasy football, so you've certainly trumped me in terms of experience. But I also understand Occam's Razor (and how to spell it correctly :-* ;)). Unfortunately, the simplest theory isn't always the preferable one. Sure, it's very easy to assume that rookie TEs don't frequently make a big impact in the NFL, let alone fantasy football, but sometimes there are situations where the opportunity to do so presents itself. I believe that Jacksonville, with Marcedes Lewis, is one of them. There are a number of mitigating factors that lead me to believe this. Of course there are also factors that weigh heavily against Lewis being a quick fantasy contributor too. I think that Leonard Pope also has some circumstances working in his favor, probably less than Lewis, but also has some big obstacles in his way.

That being said, Lewis and Pope were selected as the 17th and 18th TEs in this draft. I assume both were selected as the #2 FF TE for their respective teams (just an assumption - I didn't check rosters to verify). In that case, there's really nothing wrong with either selection. They could both be busts, but in this type of fantasy league that uses a "best ball" scoring methodology, a boom or bust player fits right in.

Not according to Frederick Copelston, S.J., author of one of the best histories of philosophy in existence.  (People spell it both ways.  I prefer it with the "k" because I have read much of Copelston's work.  It seems like people like to use the "c" these days.  Aesthetically, I think it looks ugly.)

Ockam's razor is not necessarily about the simplist notion.  It's about the one that "cuts to the chase".  It's about being most economical when things are uncertain.  There's a subtle, but not unimportant difference.  ...  But, in any event, we just disagree here.

Quote:

That's the whole thing,... I don't think Lewis and Pope are "BOOM or bust".  I think, VERY by and large, that they are "do satisfactorily or not".  They're rookies.  Not too many rookies outside of the tailback position "boom or bust", or should even be expected to, year one.  Point being, I don't even think "boom or bust" terminology should really even be used for rookie tight-ends, including in years past the likes of Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez, Heath Miller, Jeremy Shockey and so on, no less these two.  And, if one does boom, or should I say, "bust onto the scene" his rookie year, ala Antonio Gates, it's for the most part from out of nowhere...  Who's kiddin' who?  Because even if one of those big-namers came onto the scene like that, we'd still all be VERY impressed and a bit surprised.

Alright it over! :P  I got to say I know football and I know player personnel about as well as most, but this draft was unique.  I mean that in a very good way, very challenging and the stategy very difficult to figure out.  I was a rookie and may have made a couple of rookie mistakes.

That said, I believe to win the thing when you are not in a position to select a top three in key positions, i.e. RB,WR,QB you have to select elite in non key areas and get the best avaliable in key areas.  You can argue all you want, but at this point only the top tier players are sure things and then only if they don't get hurt.

The only truly bad pick in the entire draft, in my opinion, was Tuiasosopo.  Unless Brooks gets hurt real early, like pre-season, I don't think the guy is even close to a lock at #2 in Oakland.   Even if that happens, the guys no good.

There are those who did not like the Tiki Barber pick at #5, but I've made money with Tiki and Steve Smith when no one wanted in the past and I'll do OK with TIKI this time as well...Rakers?  I may pay for that one and chalk it up to experience, but trust me, he will produce at the K position with or without Edge getting them closer to scoring in the red zone.

I don't see a really bad team in the bunch...even going as deep in the draft as we went, some really interesting picks that could pay off.

You have to be kidding me......you call out my 15th round selection when you pick Rackers in the friggen 6th round!!!!! [smiley=Imwithstupid.gif]

The next kicker was taken in the 12th round, and a kicker equal to Rackers was......well......not even selected in the draft.

You also picked Leinhart as your 3rd QB, isn't that picking a back up as well, but you don't even have the starter in front of Leinhart, I picked Tuiasosopo not because I thought he would start, just to protect my investment.

Enjoy watching from the back of the pack, you are eligble to come back in 2 years.

A worse pick than a kicker in the 6th round......

you all are nuts, it is my 15th round pick?????? How can a 15th round pick be the worse pick in the draft?

Please take one giant step back from the crack pipe and look again.

Well, if you makes you feel any better, I thought BOTH picks were pretty worthless,  :o   Kicker in the 6th  :-/ ??

Tuiasosopo, well.... pretty much 99% worthless.  Not when you could have picked starters such as Alex Smith, Charlie Frye, I know those are not much to speak of right now for starters, but they ARE STARTING and that's the key here, IMO of course.

I'm not sure without looking, but assuming Marques was your 3rd QB???  Why wouldn't you have gone after a different position for your flex position??? Just curious, instead of taking the Raiders QB, which one doesn't even know if he will be the back up, probably will though, but you knows? :-/

While I will agree with you, Rackers went WAY, WAY to early, at least he will see the field and score each and every week.

Stop mixing your medication.

That's exactly what I was thinkin', BW...  Dog, I would put my money on Tuiasosopo's NOT scoring a single point for your team, and if he gets forced into action and he potentially does, it'll be ugly and the numbers won't be quality,... likely much worse than other quarterbacks' (or other position players') who were available to you at that pick, namely BILLY VOLEK'S.  But, more to come in my eventual analysis of all the teams...

Title: Re: 2006 CBFL Cheatsheets/Commentary Thread
Post by The_Dog on Jul 26th, 2006, 6:25pm
The starters who were left I had no interest in......some were injury risk and others just sucked and could lose their jobs shortly.

The big deal with this league is that you have to have a full starting line up the whole year and protect against injuries. I have Kurt Warner and Aaron Brooks at QB.....with Warners injury history I needed some protection at that position to assure that I have a starter all year, what better way then to pick up Brooks and his backup to assure a starting QB. I have no fear of him being a number 3 and if he is will then I wasted a 15TH ROUND pick.

There is no way even if I picked Ricky Williams with my 15th round pick that it is the worse pick in the draft. Down here is where you find sleepers and you could care less about a bust.

Your rational baffles me.........a 15th round 3rd QB is the worse pick.....HA

Well,... it was not me who said it was the worst pick of the draft.  Pending complete analysis, the Rackers pick probably is.  I just said that it's bad,... and it REALLY (in both senses) is.  And, frankly speaking, your incessantly defending it just because it's a 15th-round pick is both erroneous and, well, condescending.  By and large, you are playing with seasoned veterans here.  One (needless) retort that comes to mind is that if you had planned out your picks differently (better), knowing that Brooks is a bit risky of a guy to have to be depending on, you could/should have been just taking kickers, #2 tight-ends or #4 and #5 receivers at this point in the draft (like most others).  In any event, you shouldn't be leaning on that weak argument.  Quite the contrary to what you're arguing, it's easier to waste a late pick in a normal league because you can drop the player and pick up another one.  In fact, in this league it is important to maximize value at every pick because you are stuck with the guy.  And, if you think Tuiasosopo is a better pick than Volek,... well,... then there is no adequately "responding" to you, man.  Granted, a bad 15th-round pick probably won't "break" your team, but it could "make" your team if you're lucky.  But, I fear you didn't position yourself to receive such luck with this pick. Please stop throwing this up in our,... my face, man...  It makes you look like an ingrate (which I don't think you are).  I can't even believe I'm wasting this much good thought and analysis on this pick of yours, which isn't even being appreciated by you and, yet, is fairly unanymously agreed upon by everybody else here (all of which isn't appreciated by you).  I mean... you can still appreciate someone else's (well-developed) view while disagreeing with it. :-/ I get, we all get your "handcuff" strategy and, furthermore, that 15th-round picks are not a big deal.  I addressed the latter with specificity (that, again, you don't seem to appreciate (in both senses of the word)) in my last post.  The former I will include in my thorough analysis.  Anyway, I like you, man,... but you don't hang out on the site that much, and your donation, while generous, was not for that much for you to be constantly pointing your "imminent 'Top 66%' finish and subsequent return" out.  For one,... it's ultimately up to me,... at least in the sense that the very existence of the site depends on me, my running it and the league, my (thin) wallet, and my wife's generous nature, not you.  Two,... it's not a big deal to be "confident" in finishing in the top 66%, which is all you need to do to be "invited" back.  In your ONE year in this league, you finished sixth, enough to keep your seat warm for your return, but hardly enough to be talkin' like a former or the defending Champion (which is how you're coming off here).  Sixth actually puts you closer to being out than champion.  Again, if sixth for the next 20 years floats your boat, whatever...  I'd take one Championship and out the next year over that. Just because everyone says it is a bad pick doesn't mean it is......Just because I don't agree that my pick was the worse pick in the draft and I try to defend it isn't by anymeans an attack on you, this site, the others on this site, or their opinons.

My pick was blasted and I choose to defend it.....It is not something I should regret nor do I. I am a bit confused as to why you are getting so heated about my defense of my opinon......who knows? I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again.

As for the comment that I don't play to win????? How do any of my comments lead you to believe that I don't want to win? Why play if you don't want to win?

Relax Steg......I am by no means trying to insult anyone, just arguing a point, If everyone agreed with everyone else then you couldn't have a good debate.

Again, just for the record, I did NOT say it was the worst pick (though it may be the second- or third-worst; I wonder how those guys are going to react :o).

BUT, more importantly, if this is not shining through my post above,... it is NOT that you are defending it, Doggy; it is how (I perceive) you are defending it.  First off, I believe not well.  But, that (subjective judgment) aside, I believe with an "unwelcomed edge" in your touting your "imminent return", which implies NOTHING more than a "Top 66%" finish, which really isn't squat, and, mind you, I don't want to have to go diggin', lookin' for all the guys who have made that claim in the past and are now on the outside looking in.

Since I was the one who made the comment in the first place, I will chime in here. I do not agree with the Dog in his rationale that taking a back up to one of his own starters was a better pick than taking, say, Charlie Frye, or Rex Grossman, or JP Losman.I do agree the Rackers pick was a bad one, just not as bad as the Tuiasosopo pick. But, the Dog has made his arguement, and I respect him for that.

By the way, I have finished 8th, 1st, and 8th in the 3 years I have been in the league. Guess who's winning it this year guys? ;D

Alright, people you think Rakers may have been a bad pick at 6th.  I agree, it may have been, but time will tell and he will get points every week.  He had a career year and won't slow down much this year...top three kicker...Obviously I think #1 and so do most major sports analysts...Still could prove to be my personal worst pick.  My next pick was 23 selections away and I felt all top three players were off the board at the end of round 5...my next selection was almost round eight.  Looking forward I wanted a proven performer in any postition. It appeared to be a kicker playing on a team that would have to kick the ball.  Arizona added a proven RB, a rookie QB, and a rookie Guard...I don't think that's enough to make the running game go from nothing to something special...In fact look for Edg James production be go down this year.

Given that Warner is almost guaranteed to get injured...my best sleeper pick is Leinart...has the best offensive weapons in the entire NFL and plays behind a very good mentor who is extremely fragile...may be one of the top handcuff picks at QB in this league.  I'm very pleased to have picked him up at a late 14.  I also like a healthy Eric Johnson as a sleeper at 16.  Before his foot injury in 2005, he actually grabbed 162 yards in one game against Arizona in 2004.  With a weak QB/WR corp in San Franciso there may be plenty of catches for both Vernon Davis and Eric Johnson.

:-/Hummmm...if I were to make a guess at the preseason favorite, it would have to be Prime Time...not a bad pick on the board with good potential at every position.  9 Miller,10 Watson, and 11 Muhammad are the only "less strong" spots in this line-up...and there are potential strong weeks for all those players.

Great job Prime Time!

Well,... are yous ready for some rankings of you all's teams??? [smiley=hungry.gif] I just finished my preseason rankings list today.  As per my post up in "the Red Zone", I found it particularly rough this year.  Anyway, my CBFL team rankings here are (going to be) based on those player rankings.  I have "put into context" events that have happened since the CBFL Draft concluded, like, e.g., Steve Smith's unforeseeable injured hamstring, but not Fred Taylor's because injuries are an all too well-known risk-factor with Fred.  I am putting much time and effort into this for yous, so yous have something of quality to peruse and enjoy.  I should have it up by tomorrow night. [smiley=lickinmychops.gif] But, there is a "but" here...

I have a request before finishing the rankings up and posting them.  I don't want grief out of this.  Too much of my good time and effort is going into this.  I am an objective observer.  I have no desire to call it any other way than the way I see it.  Mind you, I'm the type of guy who counts EVERY swing and ball drop on a golf course.  I don't cheat (for) myself.  I'm not going to cheat (for any of) you guys.  MIND YOU, you, of course, are WELCOME to RESPECTFULLY disagree.  Just spare me of the peanut-gallery comments like "pull your head out of your ass", "stop smokin' that crack pipe", etc.  You are not engaging each other, your competitors, here, where trash-talkin' is part of the fun and where getting defensive about your picks actually means a little something.  I am just an objective third-party.  Again, too much time and effort is being put into this, and on some level shit-talkin' me is a de facto show of ingratitude.  I don't want to put myself through ALL this work (after all I already do here pro bono) only to have four or five whiny bitches givin' me a headache.  If you think you are unable to disagree in a RESPECTFUL manner that does not belie your appreciation of my efforts, PLEASE let me know right here A.S.A.P. so that I can adjust my efforts and priorities (there's no lack of other stuff needing to get done around here).  I am only part of the way in, so I may just save myself of the task, OR if I finish, I will send them out to dudes by request by way of private message or send them to another third-party to reveal at season's end.

So, are you guys cool... 8-) no matter where you, individually, rank??? [smiley=zipit.gif]

Well,... fellas,... I've thought, and I've thought, and I've thought, and I've thought,... and there is just no two ways about it...  It is what it is... for better or worse...  There may be better ways of going about this, namely basing it on precise statistical projections as opposed to player rankings with only tiers considered, which is what I did.  But, the process, flawed as it may be, isn't so for lack of effort or fantasy football experience and understanding and, at any rate, is still probably just as good as any of comparable effort.  I hope you enjoy it...

At a glance, prior to having done my rankings, there were three teams I really liked, BW's, rwchris's, and Primer's, and there were three teams I really didN'T, Dog's, Chumpman's, and O4l's, while having a rather indifferent attitude towards the other six, thinking they were middle-of-the-pack teams.  While that initial gut feeling wasn't totally belied by my findings, after doing my THOROUGH analysis, it wasn't totally confirmed, either.

Here is how these rankings were determined...  I first did my player rankings position-by-position.  I, then, based on those rankings, ranked each team 1 through 12 position-by-position and assigned points accordingly.  At place-kicker, the position of least importance/impact, those points were assigned thusly:  12 points to the #1 ranked team, 11 to the #2 team, 10 to the #3 team,... and so on,... 3 points to the #10 ranked team, 2 to the #11 team, and 1 to the #12 team.  Follow???  I beefed up the "points-value" of each position relative to PK, again, the position of least value, thusly:

(PK = 12 points)

QB = 3 X PK (i.e. 36 points)
RB = 4 X PK (i.e. 48 points)
WR = 4 X PK
TE = 2 X PK (i.e. 24 points)
D/ST = 2 X PK

In other words, the #1 ranked team at quarterback I assigned a score of 34, 35, 36 depending on how solid I felt their #1 ranking was; the #2 team received 31, 32 or 33 points; the #3 team, 28, 29 or 30 points,... and so on,... the #10 ranked team, 7, 8 or 9 points; the #11 ranked team, 4, 5 or 6 points, and the #12 ranked team, 1, 2 or 3 points.  Follow???

So, without further ado,... here are Steggie's preseason rankings (in draft order)... [smiley=drummer.gif] I hope you guys are willing to put your "objectivity" hats on...

Chumpzilla
To sum it up in very pithy fashion, I'm not, like everybody else in the fantasy world, it appears, sold on Larry Johnson given the retirements on O-line and the coaching change.  I don't doubt (anymore) that he has the skills, but he's not my #1 (or #2 or #3). [smiley=ohshit.gif] I also don't like McNabb for this year.  I think it'll be back to the old days of okay fantasy stats, except now he is older and destined to be increasingly less mobile.  I see a Randall Cunningham-esque future for Donovan, a future that may commence in '06.  I did love the Hines Ward pick, though it was his best of the draft.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 10, RB - 8, WR - 11, TE - 6, PK - 1, D/ST - 3, for which he received a total of 79 points!

Chili D.
Notwithstanding the Leonard Pope (TERRIBLE) and Verron Haynes (not a goodie, either) picks, I stressed to Chili, as a relative fantasy football newbie, to, when in doubt, play it safe, and, by and large, when it counted, i.e. through round 10, he did exactly that.  His picks of Keyshawn Johnson and Terry Glenn (when I know he was thinking about picking David Givens) were excellent and safe picks.  Upon further review, his first four or five picks are as solid as they come.  With Edge now out of Indy, getting the Indy receivers was a stroke of brilliance (that was actually the "good strategy or dumb luck" I referred to earlier in this thread).  I also love the Ron Dayne pick as you all know, and think he might have made the best pick of the draft when he beat everybody to the punch, taking the second defense of the draft, the Steelers in the 9th round, four rounds after the first defense was taken.  What a steal?  What a "steel"?  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 2, RB - 9, WR - 1, TE - 5, PK - 8, D/ST - 1, for which he received a total of 138 points!

kidcrash
As was mentioned earlier on this thread by JYJ, I think, this was the best team, hands-down,... through four rounds.  After that,... YIKES!  Culpepper is WAY too RISKY to be hanging your hat on in this league.  More than his injury, it is his PLAY prior to being injured that makes me VERY wary of his prospects in Miami, to say the least.  And, then kid's two tight-ends could come up with goose-eggs.  Besides place-kickers, every pick after the Roy Williams pick is a total roll of the dice, but I would add that the upswings aren't even that good.  The best of the lot, value-wise, I suppose, is Troy Williamson.  This high-risk, high-reward tack, no less the high-risk, kind of-reward tact, is NOT the right m.o. in the CBFL.  kid,... with ALL due respect, you didn't make the CBFL cut your first time around, and I fear that you may be headed in that direction yet again. :'( Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 11, RB - 5, WR - 7, TE - 12, PK - 9, D/ST - 9, for which he received a total of 68 points!

BarnabyWilde
Nice, solid team,... but upon further, closer inspection, not as good as I thought it was on first glance.  Hate the Reggie Bush and Giants picks!  Love the Burress, Gore and Clark picks!  His quarterbacks will be a HUGE X-factor for his team...  Not much else to say...  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 7, RB - 4, WR - 4, TE - 9, PK - 10, D/ST - 10, for which he received a total of 102 points!

cwhams
A hop-scotch team for the old Stegger...  (Remember this is all relatively speaking...) Tiki, I like; Torry, I don't; Hasselbeck, I like; Dillon, I don't; Shockey, I like; Rackers, I don't (WAY TOO early); Maroney, I like; Jones, I don't (too early).  After that, the only pick I really "like", as per my rankings, is Leftwich, kind of.  That's all, folks...  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 5, RB - 10, WR - 12, TE - 11, PK - 5, D/ST - 7, for which he received a total of 58 points!

DirkDiggler
Edge, Davis, Addai, Gonzalez,... AWESOME!  Every other pick is solid!  NO absolute clunkers!  But, more solid than packed with "potential greatness".  However, a preseason "solid" team is probably better than a preseason "potentially great" team in the CBFL format, and that showed last year and shows in these rankings.  This team's "greatness" will hinge on the play of his wideouts.  If they can upswing, Double D could be lookin' at a repeat.  If they don't, he'll still be in contention.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 4, RB - 1, WR - 9, TE - 3, PK - 4, D/ST - 5, for which he received a total of 134 points!

rickgpin
Again, another team with NO absolute clunker picks.  I don't particularly like the Mike Anderson, Philip Rivers and Daniel Graham picks and the Gus Frerotte pick, too, though I understand what he was up to with that selection.  Problem, I think, is that these are no longer the "best show on turf" Rams rick so longs for.  Protecting your Rams QB position does NOT mean what it used to.  I love rick's first four picks, though,... they might have been the second-best,... and unlike the "kid" rick didn't "crash".  Key for this team, he ranks high at the two highest-payoff positions and that could mean big things for the rickster in '06.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 8, RB - 2, WR - 2, TE - 10, PK - 2, D/ST - 6, for which he received a total of 128 points!

Oakland4life
Wasn't a big fan of the Jordan pick (too early) and everything went, well, kind of "eh" after the Steve Smith pick.  At running back, Curtis Martin, Fred Taylor and Chris Brown are a disaster waiting to happen, ESPECIALLY in this format, and that's in combination with a slight overpayment for Jordan.  QB's Drew Brees and Mark Brunell are scary, as well,... again,... in this format where you are saddled with them.  Receivers are all O4l has to hang his hat on, I am sorry to say.  There is no pick on this team that I really like.  We definitely think differently, and for O4l's sake I hope his thinking is right.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 12, RB - 11, WR - 3, TE - 7, PK - 3, D/ST - 12, for which he received a total of 68 points!

PrimeTime
This is another one of those rare teams without a clunker.  The only pick I'm not crazy about is Brian Westbrook in the second.  I just think it was too early.  Better value could have been had, but then Westbrook wouldn't have.  Brady and Bledsoe are an AWESOME tandem.  Walker is high-risk, but VERY high-reward, and Primer has three nice solid, safe, albeit lackluster, guys to complement him in Muhammad, Kennison and Moulds.  Running backs could end up being thin, but are REALLY solid at the top.  As we all have kind of been thinking, Primer will contend, for sure.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 1, RB - 3, WR - 10, TE - 4, PK - 11, D/ST - 4, for which he received a total of 122 points!

rotoworldchris
A deceiving team...  Looks good and "eh" at the same time...  Peyton Manning, YEAH; Jon Kitna, yuck.  Running backs lack luster.  As I see it, Henry could be the saving grace of his tailback corps.  Receiver and, especially, tight-end are where he's sneaky good.  While the names of the receivers he has lack luster, they're better than you might think at first glance.  Hate the pick of the Dolphins, and in this format that could be costly.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 3, RB - 7, WR - 6, TE - 2, PK - 12, D/ST - 11, for which he received a total of 104 points!

The_Dog
While I, of course, love Owens (fantasy-wise, that is) and Fitzgerald, how you feel about Edwards and Curtis is really what will determine how good you think his receiving corps overall is, and I am not of the opinion that Edwards is going to come back all too strong and that Curtis is going to continue to exemplify the same kind of potential he did under the former regime.  Again, things will change in St. Louis.  Gone are the days of incessant three-receiver sets.  Furthermore, you just never know with Owens.  Dog's running back corps is thin and filled with uncertainty.  If Jones gets traded to the Colts, that would be HUGE, but until then, it just adds to his quagmire at the position.  His two other backs, even if they end up being the guys for their respective teams,... the two teams, the 49ers and Titans, stink and aren't slated to have good years rushing the ball.  Kurt Warner and Aaron Brooks... VERY risky,... high-risk, high-reward, but not on a team with "solid" complementary parts.  This whole team is high-risk, high-reward, and that tends to spell bad things in the CBFL.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 9, RB - 12, WR - 5, TE - 1, PK - 6, D/ST - 8, for which he received a total of 84 points!

Larsen89
The Tatum Bell pick, which ended up being his only bad pick (as I see it) as it turns out, aside (again, Bell will probably still give Larsman decent numbers; I just think he went too early), this is a team that surprised me upon further, more in-depth review!  The Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams picks are sharp.  Carson Palmer worries me, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt at draft time.  That said, I expect Palmer to be plummeting in my rankings as time goes by here over the next few weeks.  Overall, job well done for a first-timer.  Bottom line, I ranked him as follows:

QB - 6, RB - 6, WR - 8, TE - 8, PK - 7, D/ST - 2, for which he received a total of 102 points!

...

So, there yous have it!  To break the league down into thirds, you have:

The Top Third in Contention for a Championship
1. (UNbelievable) Chili D. - 138 points
2. DirkDiggler - 134 points
3. rickgpin - 128 points
4. PrimeTime - 122 points

The Middle of the Pack
5. rwchris - 104 points
6 - 7. (tie) BarnabyWilde - 102 points
6 - 7. (tie) Larsen89 - 102 points
8. The_Dog - 84 points

Pink Slip Candidates
9. Chumpzilla - 79 points
10 - 11. (tie) kidcrash - 68 points
10 - 11. (tie) Oakland4life - 68 points
12. cwhams - 58 points

...

I hope yous enjoyed!!! [smiley=bow.gif]

Nice job Steg. But I will win it this year.  ;)

The Giants will surprise you, and you watch Reggie...he is for sure the X-Factor of myy RB corps.

I love my QB situation, with my home run hitter (Vick), Mr. Steady (Big Ben) and wiley veteran (Favre) who will be playing from behind all year.

Should be fun to watch the league unfold this year!!

Even though no one seems to post here...here is my earlier comment posted elsewhere:

I'm currently near the top...#4 in league.

Okay, I'll say it, I did not look at the scoring system as well as I would have, had I known the draft was going to occur when it did.  That's no ones fault execept mine.

That said, I made a rookie mistake, for this league...should have drafted a defense with the #6 pick, instead of Rackers.

The Seattle defense looks like it will neutralize my other picks most of the season.  I think my team will make the cut for next year, but the gold will go to other, more worthy teams.

It is still interesting to watch and I think, if you do watch you will see the stategy employed by all league coaches.

It is what it is.

>:( My defense gets a -54 points!  That's bull shit, the scoring system is what it is and it sucks.  No defense in the world is worth a -54 points...this needs to be revisited in the future.

100% of all members of this league are stupid (once clearly understanding the bogus scoring system so heavily slanted on defense) and insane not to draft a top defense like #1 pick in the draft!

Tell me how you get any "real" player to score 54 points?  That's only considering the negative factor... there is the clear possibility of having a 100 point differential between the scoring of the top defense and the worst defense...that is not football...no defense, including the Bears, is worth that kind of differential over another defense.

Folks that comes from a guy that has been sitting in anywhere from the #2 to the #4 spot.

So far, my picks have proven to be extremely insightful...except for the uncannily high status that the defense is given in this league...I don't think you will find that kind of emphasis on the D anywhere in the planet...

That said...if I'm here next year, I draft defense very high...and you should too.

Who benefited and who got screwed in week #4:

Defense
Score      Team
0      Oakland4life
0      Chilli D
0      Barnaby Wilde
-1.2      PrimeTime
-14      Rotoworld
-18.2      Rickpin
-22.8      Kid Crash
-22.8      DirkDiggler
-30.3      Chumpzilla
-30.3      Dog

-54.3      Cwhams  (Mr. SourGrapes Hambone)

Yea,... well,... I beg to differ.  I, in fact, think that defense is not given enough consideration in your run-of-the-mill systems.  It may be a tad high here, but, hey, your defense, cdub, did nothing but give up 333 yards and 41 points, and had nary a positive stat.  That's about as bad as it gets.  -54.3 points seems about right.  That is a HORRIBLE performance by what amounts to half of what goes into the "real" game (not that D/ST should be half of the fantasy game, but I think it should be way more valuable than it usually is).  Defense in this league is roughly equal to about a quarterback and a running back or wide receiver (and maybe a place-kicker).  That's about right.  I mean the performance of your D/ST is about as bad as it gets.

:P  For the year there seems to be a direct correlation between team defense and standings for the top two teams and the bottom two teams...the rest is a bit fuzzy.  Here are the facts, make the call:

Defense                           Standing
Totals      Team                Week #4
0.1         Rickpin               2
-8.1        PrimeTime           1
-51.7      Chilli D                8
-77.1      Oakland4life         9
-87.2      Kid Crash             6
-95         DirkDiggler          10
-96         Cwhams               4
-97         Rotoworld             3
-97.1      Larsen                  5
-110.7    Chumpzilla             7
-110.8    Dog                     12
-116.4    Barnaby Wilde       11

No one seems to be getting much done on defense...the system is squirrley relative to what I'm use to.

Take it personal and get mad or review the system for future years, your choice.  My fault for assuming the scoring system would bear some resemblance to most other leagues. ?.?.?

Maybe I'm the crazy one here, but I just don't see how you can have a 116+ point discrepancy (highest to lowest) in defensive points after only four weeks into the league with a realistic scoring system. [smiley=bonghit.gif] [smiley=bonghit.gif] [smiley=spank.gif]

As my old high school team use to say, "Wait till next year!"

You may be right Stego, the defense should perhaps be given more emphasis than it is in other leagues.

No matter what league you play in the player should know the rules of engagement.

Clearly no one clearly understood the defensive scoring scheme or they would have drafted defenses sooner.

But how in the hell does the best defense in the league come up with .1, that's 1/10th of one point after four weeks??????!!!!!!!????  That's not the defense that's the lame scoring system.

I'm not trying to get personal, I'm merely making observations for possible improvements...besides that I'm tormented by my poor defensive performance.  I admit my bias...I will let the facts speak to the relative effectiveness of a scoring system that has the best defense in the league comming up with 1/10th of a point after 4 weeks.   [smiley=alcoholic.gif]

By the way there is not a team in the league that has a QB,RB,K combination that could ever score so few points...lets face it look at the points they are all virtually all in the negative category.

First off, cw, did you receive my private message(s)?

Second, your analysis here (and The_Dog's thoughts of a week ago) is (are) coming at a VERY awkward time, i.e. when bye-weeks are kicking in.  Weeks 1 and 2 went by without much notice, but now that bye-weeks are kicking in, people (not attuned to the system) are noticing disparity, which your chart there is exemplifying.  HOWEVER, once the bye-weeks are all finished, you will notice it even back out.  In other words, you are conducting/are beginning to conduct your analysis at the worst possible time.  All that stuff will be much more even later.  Of course, it won't be absolutely level.  What then would be the point?  If you hung your hat on the Buccaneers, e.g., I say, "Feel it!"  That's turned out to be a miserable pick that should have severe consequences on your team.  But, again, in any event, the point is that the timing of your "analysis" here is,... well,... just as miserable... and, might I even say,... unfair... to the system.

Furthermore,...

on 10/06/06 at 01:43:05, cwhams wrote:

...that's not at all the case.  There were even people posting here and there during the draft indicating how important D/ST is in this format.  DD, Chumpman, Primer, rwchris, and BW, as (successful) veterans of the league all were aware, and I made sure Chili was, and all six of them are all over the place in the standings and in your chart. [smiley=shrug.gif]

In any event,...

...you must be a little tipsy, my friend.  You are not even making sense now.  You are now speaking of defense as though it was a category played primarily in the positive... while at the same time you observe the reality that it is a category played primarily in the negative.  Yet, you still analyze it as though it's played in the positive. [smiley=uh.gif] You've got it totally bass-ackwards.  Yea, +.1 points over four weeks would be HORRIFIC for a QB, RB, WR or TE.  But, we are talking D/ST's here.  In other words, you are talking apples and oranges... by comparing points awarded to QB's, RB's, WR's, TE's and PK's with points awarded to D/ST's.  While QB, RB, WR and TE are positions primarily (but not exclusively; players will record negative fantasy points on occasion) "played in positive numbers", D/ST is the opposite.  It is primarily (though not exclusively) "played in negative numbers".  You can even think of it this way...  QB, RB, WR, TE and PK pretty much "bottom" out at zero, whereas, D/ST pretty much "tops" out at zero, and ULTIMATELY it's all RELATIVE, anyway.  Your analysis that a D/ST's achieving 1/10th of a fantasy point over four weeks is ridiculous is TOTALLY out of context,... actually, in the wrong context.  The D/ST aspect to the CBFL game here plays like golf, man.  Follow???  If you are going to get all riled up, you at least got to make sure you are making sense.

Now, whether or not I want to/should make it -1 point for every 30 or 50 yards allowed instead of every 25 and -1 point for every 2 or 3 points allowed instead of every 1, that's another discussion, about which a much better tack than the one you have decided to take herein could (have) be(en) facilitated, but ultimately one of which I have yet to be persuaded even though it comes up every two or three years. [smiley=no.gif]

...

Anyway, I guess I would just like people to be more humble about their takes.  This is ultimately just a fun freebie for you guys, and, in that context, I like to make it something different, not just more of the usual.  Yet, I get a load out of all the hubris.  You, cdub, have been playing in the league all of four weeks now (about a month).  I've been participating and/or running it for eight years (damn near a decade), six years here at FantasyFootballer.com (the prior two at another site where it was born).  Yet, you're already banging up the suggestion box... as if, frankly speaking, there was one.  How about playing in the thing for, at least, a year, digesting it a bit, maybe even,... get this,... appreciating it as something different from the norm and then perhaps engaging in more level-headed, reasonable and UNbiased dialogue with me down the line?  That's how real progress is made, not by comin' in and, at least, giving off the feeling of telling me how to run my show... after a period of time that can be put in terms of "weeks".  This is, of course, not even to mention the qualitative dimension to this, namely that over these eight years I've steeped myself in these rules, whereas, you (and The_Dog) admittedly are just now acquainting yourself with them. :-/

I think my biggest complaint with the defensive scoring system is that owners should not get excited when their team defense has a bye-week. I believe that the wheat is separated from the chaff (so to speak) in many leagues by an owner's handling of a bye-week dilemma. I recognize that this isn't "many leagues" too. But I know I used to look forward to the bye-week because the zero I received in the defensive column might be the highest score I received there all season.

But I know the returning owners are familiar with the scoring and know how important a defense is. Despite that, they don't go in the first round because a good one can be had much later in the draft. I'd be interested to see how you'd actually perform if you took a defense in the first round. If someone would have done it this year, they would have likely chosen the Bears, Steelers, or Panthers (the consensus top 3 going into the season). If you had chosen the Panthers that early, it would have been a very ugly first round pick.

Post by cwhams on Oct 6th, 2006, 11:41am
;D  I'm going to be extremely excited about the bye week for the defense...and so should every owner in the league...it's not a dilemma...it's a blessing!  With the exception of Rickpins' .1, no team in the league has a positive number comming off the defense.  Unless I don't understand this one either...you D don't play...you get zero points...that's good!  It beats the usual -8 to -50 points we have been getting.

Lastly, Steg's comments about my digesting the league for a year prior to making negative comments are accurate.  His comments have already began to give me a better appreciation of the league.  That's not to say I totally agree...it is to say that I'm begining to understand and appreciate the differences that make the league "unique".

So there is no misunderstanding here... I openly acknowledge that many of my comments are based on having a weak Seattle defense.  I now have a better understanding of how this league operates and would definitely draft differently next year.

This is not an attack on Stegman and I apologize to all who may have thought that to be the case.  I have a real appreciation of the fine work done by Steg.  I simply made what I perceive to be a few varsity moves, with a few freshman mistakes in my draft choices.  Just venting here a bit guys...I'll stand by my choices and still think I'll be back next year...with a better coached team!

Thanks to all for allowing me to participate!   :)

[smiley=alcoholic.gif]  You must be really be enjoying the beer on this football Sunday.  Tuiasosopo

You are the same guy who popped off about the Leinart pick that I made...let's see 4 points for Tuiasosopo...

I wonder how many points you get for Leinarts 252 yards and 2 TD's.  The answer (I hope) is "0" because I hope Leftwich does better.  ;D

Good luck with your team Dog. ;)

I popped off on the Leinhart pick because you hamstringed me with Warner......I didn't think anyone would pick Leinhart, that was my plan to have Warner and his back up. You must have cheated.

I like handcuffing guys...that's why I got the Barber/Jacobs and Dillon/Maroney combinations.  Both have paid off so far.

However, late in the draft when you feel as strongly as I did that Leinart would be starting by midseason, probably earlier...on a team with tons of offensive weapons...he was a good late round acquistion with potential to pick up points on an off week.  Looks like he accomplished that this week for me.

I'm not positive...but I don't think that Mr. "T's" points were enough to go in the books this week for you.  [smiley=awwgee.gif] [smiley=awwgee.gif]

Picked this up off ESPN Fantasy Football

Karabell Korner
Think kickers don't matter in fantasy football? Through four weeks of the season, the Rams' Jeff Wilkins and the Bears' Robbie Gould were averaging 14 fantasy points per game, good enough to rank them in the overall top 20, ahead of Larry Johnson and any wide receivers. Still think kickers don't matter? Here are some notes on an overlooked position:

Wilkins, Rams: It didn't hurt when he nailed five field goals in Week 1, but he has averaged three field goals per game since then, so it's not a total aberration. Plus, Wilkins has been great before, with five seasons of 117 or more points, including the spectacular 163-point 2003 season. With the Rams offense sputtering in the red zone, Wilkins will thrive.

Gould, Bears:Surprisingly, Rex Grossman continues to drive the Bears up and down the field, and Gould has benefited with 13 field goals in as many attempts, plus 11 extra points. Unless Thomas Jones finishes off more drives with touchdowns, expect Gould to keep close to this pace.

John Kasay, Panthers: This guy has three field goals of at least 50 yards already, and only two attempts from inside 40 yards! He's got a strong leg and he's a safe veteran.

Shayne Graham, Bengals: Carson Palmer's crew will score a lot, but Graham's also likely to get close to 30 field goals, just like the previous two seasons.

Neil Rackers, Cardinals: Last year's kicking MVP was generally the first to go in 2006 drafts, but the Cards can't move the ball, and Rackers hasn't hit his two attempts over 50 yards.

Morton Anderson, Falcons: How old is he? Yeah, that would be 46. So what? He hit five field goals last week, and the Falcons will get him chances.

Well spoken from the veteran that has the #1 defense in the league.

The point here was not whether or not I or anyone else had the best or the worst defense.  The point is should the defense dictate above all other picks a discrepancy from best to worse of potentially 60 or 70 points in a given week.

The answer to that question may very well be, "yes" it is worth that much in this league...go read the rule book.  I'm okay with that and will certainly draft accordingly in the future.

You also had me picked toward the bottom of both leagues that we play in together and those predictions have proven incorrect through week four and 5 for atleast one of the two leagues.

CBFL, I don't know, week 5 my team did not do well, but the defense did not play, so they were not able to chip in a -54.  Who knows, I'm still learning. ?.?.?

By the way, Seattle's defense will prove to be better than your rankings as will my team.  Go Bonemen! ;)

[smiley=caughtonthecan.gif]  You are right Rickpin...you read the rules and I glossed overthem and was ill prepared to take on the rigors of this draft.  Looking over my draft choices, I'm lucky to be as high as I am through week four and will likely drop out of sight as the season goes on.

I bow to the wisdom of your much more sophisticated choices.  [smiley=doseofreality.gif]

Not that I profess to be Mr. Fantasy Football Expert, but please give me a little credit.  I did not get lucky and draft the Chicago defense.  To say that is why I am at the top of the league is not totally correct.

I played in the league last year (my first year in the league).  I noticed that a good dependable defense was a big asset in this league.

This year I picked the  Chicago Defense in round #5 as the first defense selected.  That ment I had to evaluate all the defenses and pick the best one AND I had to decide what round to pick them in.  I believe Chumpzilla picked a defense in round 5 or 6 but other than that defenses were picked very late in the draft.  A choice the other players made.

You do not need to pick a defense in round one.  You just need to develop a strategy (that may or may not entail drafting a defense early) and follow that strategy through.  Did you notice that some players selected 3 QB's and some only 2?  There is also a strategy being played out here as well.

I, for one, like the scoring system.  It adds to the strategy element of the draft.

There were a couple of round 5 picks.  Those were very smart picks.  You get the credit for it.  I thought Seattle was a bargain in the 11th round...so far...wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Not that my team will necessarily make the cut...but if it does, you will have to do better than a 5th round pick to get a top defense next year.

If, as Steg says, the defense is worth about three players and everyone catches on to that fact...and you think there are say four or five top defenses, I'm not sure how you wait to the 10th, 11th, 12th, and even 16th rounds to pick a good one up.

If you are filling other needs and there are a batch of D's you think are about equal, then sure fill the other needs.

Bottom line I congratulate those who saw the value and went for it...much better strategy than my poor efforts.

I'm actually starting to like the format...bottom line fantasy football is not a lot different than real football...veteran players have an advantage.

Good luck to all!  [smiley=cheers.gif]

And, again, I repeat... the team that came in SECOND a year ago, rotoworldchris, took what ended up being a pretty LAME defense, the Vikings, with the VERY LAST pick of the draft.  The guy who won it, DirkDiggler, had the Buccaneers, who were okay, but not unreal, and, in any event, who he procured in the ELEVENTH round. [smiley=shrug.gif] I can tell that you are man of reason, cdub, and I see that you are coming around, and know that you were particularly frustrated after Week 4, but, frankly speaking, the thing for me is, with a little cool, calm, unbiased and correctly-informed thought, I don't understand the hubbub to begin with,... hence, my frustration.  Then, there is the subsequent reality (clusterfuck) of the hubbub's emboldening certain people with "particular dispositions",... which,... well,... sucks for me... and adds to the frustration.  Anyway,... let's see how things pan out.  All of your "modest" commentary aside, cdub, I think you are going to be fine "making the cut".  Though, to be absolutely honest, I had been warning you guys about "overrating" the Seahawks defense all offseason (mainly over at StegsList.com) and, mind you, taking some heat over it, I do think that they will tighten up and play better down the stretch.

[smiley=band.gif]  Perhaps one of the reasons to get involved in these things are to learn to figure things out...that translates to other aspects of life...yes my frustration showed in my comments.  However, the comments effected a number of responses that gave the information necessary to learn the system.

Next time I'll attempt a bit more finese in my quiries.  [smiley=pray.gif]

I guess I'm going to chime in here at the very end and admit, that I to had no idea what the hell was going on with the defensive scoring, but I S L O W L Y am starting to figure it out.  (not a real easy task) but I understand the frustration that was pouring out here.

I went into the draft, basically the same strategy I have always used, let other teams burn high picks on defenses.  Why?  My reasoning was, there are 12 teams, we can only draft ONE defense so it isn't like teams are going to stockpile them.

I was one of the last teams to pick a defense, I remember quite vividly, I had Jacksonville-Minnesota-San Diego all cued up for the 15th or 16th rounds.  I monitored the situation, and noticed Kidcrash (Minnesota) was the only team with out a D.  That's when I jumped in and picked Jacksonville.  They were a top D from last year, and I was very happy to wait until the end, to me, you don't need to pick a D no matter what the scoring system is, (single digit rounds that is) there are ALWAYS surprises.  Like San Diego, #1 right now in overall D, and nobody picked them, but I had them qued up just in case KidCrash had taken Jacksonville before me!!!! ;)

Hey, all I can say is that the real SOD has been Reggie Williams, Round 16!!!!!  All he's done is catch 24-297-4 TDS!!!!!!!   ;D

Denver too went undrafted.

Here's my "wisdom" [smiley=zenmaster.gif] on this...  I think quite simply that the higher you take a defense, in a somewhat paradoxical way because you ONLY get one, the MORE "certain"/"confident" you have to be about said D.  Though there certainly is NO rule to this, the irony, I think, is that the teams that usually get screwed most are the ones who try to navigate the middle and draft their D's between rounds 10 and 14.  The early guys, drafting one prior to round 10, usually, because we have a bunch of solid fantasy footballers here, walk away with a real goodie, or at least one as good as Pittsburgh this year, not good, but not back-breaking either, and the late guys, drafting one in rounds 15 or 16, with the choices largely made for them, wind up with a diamond in the rough, relatively speaking at least.  ...  But, going back to my original point about being "certain",... was, for example, Seattle a D to be REALLY "certain" about and justifying an eleventh round pick on???  Hell, my clammerings alone, if at all respected and assented to, should have been (at least) one red flag.  To me, if you REALLY wanted them, you had to be, at least, disciplined enough to wait them out and grab them in round 15 or 16 so that the possibility of damage would be mitigated and you'd be getting a potential diamond in the rough, which a defense picked in round 11 canNOT be considered (by definition,... relatively speaking).  Ultimately, you had to know Seattle wasn't a "lock".  Hell, I LOVED defenses like Atlanta and Denver going into this year (as you StegsList.com-ers would know).  As much as I LOVED them, though, and I as yous know am a DIEHARD Bronco [smiley=broncofan.gif] fan to boot, I would NOT have drafted either before round 15.  Hell, I waited on them and took them both VERY late, Denver late in round 8 and Atlanta in the middle of round 9, in the GBRFL NINE-round RESTOCKING draft (note that the GBRFL is comprised of 10 teams each with 21-component rosters and 12 protection spots).  Regardless of how much anyONE liked them, Seattle should have been treated with similar "caution"/"restraint" (as I employed regarding Denver and Atlanta in the GBRFL).

In hind sight I agree that Seattle has been a bust at round 11 pick.  You were right about that.  [smiley=flamewar.gif]

However, your reasoning, as I remember it...?...was to the effect that since Seattle was so good last year...everyone would be gunning for them.  Not sure I agree with that as a reason as such.  You get paid a $MILLION$ a year, you better be giving me 100% every game.

Steg hits more than he misses...so do a lot of you other guys/gals out there.  Good stuff going on in here. [smiley=twothumbsup.gif]

I think the real value of Steg's analysis is to learn and benefit from the rationale...I may be placing a few wagers and need an edge.

Rickpin Defense ='s #1 Ranking, #2 in league standings, PrimeTime Defense ='s #2 Ranking, #1 in league standings.

Pretty well holds true for the top, middle, and bottom of the league.  That's okay, you just have to be smart enough to know that this is an extremely Defense heavy league.

So, there yous have it!  To break the league down into thirds, you have:

The Top Third in Contention for a Championship
1. (UNbelievable) Chili D. - 138 points
2. DirkDiggler - 134 points
3. rickgpin - 128 points
4. PrimeTime - 122 points

The Middle of the Pack
5. rwchris - 104 points
6 - 7. (tie) BarnabyWilde - 102 points
6 - 7. (tie) Larsen89 - 102 points
8. The_Dog - 84 points

Pink Slip Candidates
9. Chumpzilla - 79 points
10 - 11. (tie) kidcrash - 68 points
10 - 11. (tie) Oakland4life - 68 points
12. cwhams - 58 points

...

I hope yous enjoyed!!! [smiley=bow.gif]

[smiley=spstan.gif] [smiley=spkyle.gif] [smiley=spcartman.gif] [smiley=spkenny.gif]

Actual Finish:

1.   PrimeTime
2.   rickgpin 1320.7
3.   rotoworldchris 1288.9
4.   Chumpzilla 1167.8

5.   cwhams 1160.0
6.   BarnabyWilde 1056.1
7.   Chili D. 1017.2
8.   Larsen89 983.2

9.   kidcrash 941.9
10. DirkDiggler 910.3
11. Oakland4life 827.0
12. The_Dog 670.4

I projected Primetime to win the thing from the start.  I felt rickpin had a very good team as well.  Thought Dog easily had the worse draft in the league and projected myself somewhere in the middle (at the beginning of the season).  Did not give a lot of thought to the rest of the league at that time.
