Title: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by StegRock on Aug 19th, 2007, 7:09am This thread is for general discussion and commentary on the (15th) annual GBRFL restocking Draft set to kick off TOMORROW (later today), Sunday, August 19th at 2:30 p.m. (EST). EVERYBODY is welcome!!! Whether you are in the league or not, feel free to post your thoughts on this thread. Given our lack of centralization this year, marked by the old Stegger's here being in Hawaii, [smiley=palmtree.gif] I expect our on-line "show" to be better than ever,... the real deal. I hope some of yous can carve away a little out of your Sunday afternoon to drop on by and check it out. The thread where we will be making our picks is: http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=53;action=display;num=1187521479. |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by T-Rave on Aug 19th, 2007, 3:49pm Okay . . . just to pre-empt the inevitable criticism of my taking a tight end in the first round . . . I traded Plax to Warner for Deuce McAllister -- so I needed a #2 or #3 receiver (Stallworth and Horn have upside, but I wanted something more certain). Gates' last two years have been as productive as Burress' -- each of them has about 1000 yards and 9 touchdowns each of the past two years. So as I figure it, this pick REALLY is: 1.10 - RB Deuce McAllister - Saints |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by StegRock on Aug 20th, 2007, 4:12am Just to throw this out there,... I thought that my best pick was D/ST New England Patriots at 2.03, followed by my pick of RC Ted Ginn at 5.03. As for my worst pick,... well,... frankly speaking,... I felt like I made solid selections up and down. I really hated taking QB Charlie Frye at 9.03. I felt, in light of my pathetic quarterback situation, that I had to,... but, really, he is a complete waste on my team, in terms of its future. I also, my history of putting a positive spin on this player's circumstances notwithstanding, am not crazy about having taken RB Ricky Williams at 9.04. I just feel that there really is no hope to hold out anymore on Ricky, but I have been a believer in him and do like the kid, despite how screwy he can be (believe it or not... I think his heart is in the right place), and that sentiment won the day... for better or worse,... probably the latter. I'm already thinking, "Week One cut." |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by DB on Aug 20th, 2007, 9:44am I never thought I would say this but I agree that taking the Pats in the 2nd round was a good pick. I don't know what is ... either this year's draft was poor or we now realize that anything after the first round is a crapshoot. I took the Panthers in the 4th and (with the keepers) they were like the seventh or eighth defense off the board. We used to not even think about even the best defenses until at least the 3rd or 4th. Ted Ginn can play. I don't think he will put up big numbers this year but I think he will flash his talent with a couple big plays and will be one of the most dangerous talents in the league in years to come. I also kinda like the Michael Bush pick at the end of the first. This guy would have been a higher pick in the NFL draft had he stayed healthy. He was great at Louisville (except when they played Rutgers of course). While I can't remeber if the injuries are similar, his situation can be compared to Frank Gore coming out of school with a big question mark due to injury. Of course, all of these picks pale in comparison to Adrian Peterson, the best RB to come out of the school in 20 years as they say. Now that I just jinxed him, I see you guys in the lottery next year. :-X |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by DOLFAN on Aug 20th, 2007, 10:46am I like Michael bush too, but to compare him to Gore is rediculous....unless Gore had 2 titanium rods inserted into his leg this weekend, lmao. A far as Adrian Peterson, he is not the best RB to come out of college in 20 years...they say that about any RB every few years. He is a very good player, but IMO he is not Reggies Bush...he is the best RB to come out in 20 years. I liked my first 2 picks, after that I felt the fins in the 4th was a great pick...since i deed a defense badly...not. The wr retreads that I got are guys with little upside, but I was just looking for a couple steady freddy guys to be my #4 and 5. I( really like Brandon Jackson, Morency is just a guy IMO. Danny had another strong draft, as usual. I agree with DB that te draft was weak this year in regards to depth. |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by T-Rave on Aug 20th, 2007, 12:55pm I was very surprised that defenses got drafted so early this year -- I was hoping to snag one at the end of round 3 or maybe even 4, before anyone else did. :P I like Brandon Jackson alot, too. He'll be starting this year. Ted Ginn isn't high on my list, though. With all the offensive problems in Miami, and with Chris Chambers and Marty Booker ahead of him . . . I realized that I took about half a dozen receivers, and all but two of them are sleepers or deep sleepers (DEEP sleepers). Not much depth at all. Still, I like the Antonio Gates pick at 1.10 -- best receiver left, at that point (Calvin Johnson having been taken), and receiver was my biggest hole. One more note -- having been in the 10th position, and being at the end of the run on defenses and at the end of the run on kickers, I was VERY happy to get Philly D/ST and Robbie Gould. Who DOESN'T have Gould as a top-5 kicker? Joe, are you saying that Danny's draft was strong because of his choices or because he had so many high picks or both? |

How is that ridiculous? Putting aside the fact that both have the last names of politicians/presidents/vice-presidents [smiley=laugh.gif], that I said I was not sure about the similarity of the injuries AND that my point was that they are comparable because the both dropped in the NFL draft due to injuries sustained late in their respective college careers after they had both previously been very good .... I did some research. Seems that Bush sustained a leg fracture during his senior season. He dropped to the fourth round in the NFL draft after not being able to partake in any pre-draft stuff like the combines. He may have to sit out this year. Gore tore his ACL in college twice (left and right) and dropped in the draft to the third round. Surely he would have been a first rounder without the baggage. While Bush may be never pan out like Gore, all things being equal, I would rather have a fracture than a double knee injury, but at the very least, it is a comparable situation. Ironically, both dropped to the end of our first round and were taken by Mark (Gore at 1.09 after someone took MAURICE CLARETT [smiley=laugh.gif] and Bush at 1.08). By the way, I bet good 'ol Maurice is getting some rods stuck in him right about now. [smiley=assinface.gif] |

;D [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=LMFAO.gif] Very nice DB. I did want to throw out it's also possible that Maurice has been "tabbed" at least 5 times thus far. Now for the bad news. My Stanton pick, as I fully understand, was a flop. The more I think about it, the more I agree it was a terrible pick (especially with a 1st rounder). So, I will take my lumps there. Although, I don't mind holding him for a full year - I just didn't need to use a 1st rounder on him. All in all, one of the wackiest drafts to date. Steg screwed everything up with NE, fliers were being taken all over the place and both Feder and Joe took Tony Hunt. |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by DirkDiggler on Aug 20th, 2007, 7:57pm My draft turned out alright. I think I probably had one bad pick in Lorenzo Booker. I thought he had taken the #2 position behind Ronnie Brown. WRONG!!! I was targeting the Pats with my second round pick. Steg got them one pick before me. So instead I ended up with the Chargers and Steelers. The 4th and 5th best defenses on most boards. I also got a steal with Isaac Bruce in the 5th round. He had over a 1000 yards last year. I also took Bowe from KC. He is either going to be a huge bust or a massive hit. Not such which..... Kenneth Darby is my sleeper pick. A 7th round draft choice out of Alabama for the Bucs. He is backing up Caddy in Tampa. After the year Caddy had last year, I think this may work out as a deep sleeper pick. So overall, not a bad draft. Got the best kicker in Wilkins, 4th and 5th Defense, and players to round out all the protected players I kept(14)...... |

T,... you are of course entitled to your opinion. But, you're juxtaposing a 1st-round pick and a 5th-round pick, bro. Relative to Brandon Jackson, Ginn isn't high on my list, either. Now, I understand that you may be speaking more generally, i.e., I guess you like Ginn much less than me. But, juxtaposing a 1st-rounder and a 5th-rounder just gives such a commentary an air of tendentiousness, which I know is not your m.o. ... And, by the way, contrary to Joe's take, I think DB's comparison of Bush to Gore vis-a-vis how each came to the NFL is VERY fair... In the NFL Draft, they were both seen as damaged goods and fell about the same distance. |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by Flesh is Fantasy on Aug 21st, 2007, 2:39am props to Steg for bringing this thread to light. I must concur that Feder had three very solid picks in Rd 1; albeit I thought C Johnson might go ahead of Lynch. As DB mentioned, the draft seems to be more of a crapshoot by Rd 2. Although I think the Gates pick by Trav coulda waited, I understand the logic in having him.(I almost protected the dude). I think Pak had a bad run of picks thru Rd 5 (see Clemens Rd 2). Overall, there a some verrrrrry good teams to contend with this year...what else is new? |

Title: Re: '07 GBRFL Draft GENERAL DISCUSSION thread Post by T-Rave on Aug 21st, 2007, 3:47pm Steg, good point. I concede. I was not trying to juxtapose those two situations. Just "stream of consciousness" thinking, really. I was just trying to say that even at the fifth round Ginn, to me, was a bit of a reach. I may be wrong of course, but that was my take. As for the idea that the Gates pick could've waited, I should say here that I didn't have a second round pick. So I had #10 overall and then had to wait until #30 overall. No way Gates falls that far, so I HAVE to take him at #10, especially since that position is my biggest hole. DD, not sure about Wilkins being the best kicker. Robbie Gould was #1 last year, and a case can be made that that won't change this year. NICE JOB ON THE TAB COMMENT!!!!! [smiley=bow.gif] I saw the picture in my email yesterday -- lmao. |
