Title: The Great Smiley Project & Avatar Madness!
Post by StegRock on Sep 16th, 2002, 11:04pm
For those of you into the lighter side of things around here, I wanted to inform you about the commencement of the "Great Smiley Project" and a little game of sorts in connection with it!  I have downloaded a bunch more smilies that I want to add.  However, based on the unfortunate lack of functionality of this overall wonderful message-board program with regards to doing this, I am going to have to do it one-by-one if I want to do it the right way, at least in my mind.  They all could just be added into a "Smilies" directory, but...  I want to keep the "message" smilies in some order, alphabetical after "thumbs down", and I also want to give them cool labels, not just based on their ".gif" file name, which is limited to certain characters and make for labels that usually sound stupid/boring.  So begins the :o (eye-popping) journey of adding them one-by-one.

So, if you really like these little guys (e.g. [smiley=beatnik.gif] ) and you want to have some fun with this otherwise mundane task Steggie has to deal with, let's make a little game out of it...  Every day, for the next 20 or 30 or so, I will be adding one to three smilies.  The question...  Can you identify the NEW smilies for the day?  I just added two today.  What are they? [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

By the way, when it comes to "message icon" smilies, there is no way I will be able to keep them in alphabetical order anymore.  They will just be listed in the order I add them. >:( For the purposes of our little game, though, I will wait a day or two before adding the ones that will be used as both "message" and "message icon" smilies to the "message icon" index.  So, no cheating! ;) ::)

Also, if there are any out there that YOU really like, feel free to contact me and I will consider adding them.  Thank you! :)

Edited to change topic!

I think at some point down the road maybe we could do a Survivor: Smiley.

Some of those losers need to be voted off the Gridiron.   [smiley=downthetubes.gif]  <--but not that one!

LOVE that idea!  Let's do that down the road.  But, I'll start it!  Let's give them all a chance for awhile as, though I do love the idea, they are all coming from my loins in the sense that I have chosen all of the added ones! >:(

The philosopher in me just has to come out here, though... It is funny how we, Americans, have a propensity toward the negative.  I mean, it has to be known that I am handpicking these smiley dudes.  We could just as well do a "Favorite Smiley" contest, could we not?  It would probably be just as fun, would it not?  I just find, based on the vantage point from which I see having gone about in the States quite a bit and, moreover, having lived and been around overseas for so... too long, this phenomena to be, well, intriguing and the popularity of "Survivor" very consistent with this mentality.  In short, VERY short, it seems like we have had it so good for so long in America, that we take it for granted so much so that we let negativity seep into our "world" seamlessly and insidiously.  You might be thinking right now, "Steg, all he/I said pertained to smilies for Christ's sake...  Let's keep perspective here! ::) "  Yea, that is true, but, in a way, makes it even further proof of my belief and more potent evidence in the fact that it is such an "off-the-cuff," cutesy issue that contains, inherently, more positivity than negativity.  Again, whatever, Steg the Philosopher, had to wield his ugly head [smiley=smileytrash.gif] here.  Sorry! :-[ Just take it whence it comes... from a guy whom you ultimately know little about, who runs a fantasy-football message-board site and is sitting a half-world away behind a computer screen, but who cares about "what's up" and probably thinks too much about it. [smiley=gonecrazy.gif]

Moving right along... ::)

PhantasyPhilly... SCORE! [smiley=havinablast.gif] That was #2 of the day!  A couple more comin' at you a bit later!

Now, I gotta' go to bed.  It has been a "long" ;) night here in the ROK.  It is actually a holiday weekend here, so.... fun night! [smiley=hooters.gif] [smiley=gettinridden.gif] I'll see you guys again on the morrow!

PhillyPhantasy is starting to run away with things.  But, given the amount of smilies I will be adding, there is definitely still enough time for "someone" else to make a move.

Current Standings
PhillyPhantasy - 5
bgsgfan - 1 (and 1 assist)
someone - 1

Regarding the smilies you suggested, paulinstl, one of them will join the team.  Hint!  Hint!  I must admit that some of the others go against my (gayer, I suppose) sensibilites.  Along these lines, there is actually a "blowjob" smiley out there.  I really like it, but there is no way I can justify officially bringing it over here.  Of course, for those adept at linking to graphics/smilies from other locations, as you are, paul, as an individual poster in no way officially endorsed by me or "the Gridiron", you can use whatever smilies you want from wherever you are permitted to. 8)

[smiley=bawling.gif][smiley=mywhippinboy.gif] I will tally the score and make the standings after each of them has been found and identified.  Have at it, fellas!  Good luck!  Here's one for the road... I think PhantasyPhilly has finally clinched it.  Thanks a bunch for helpin' out, especially Philly for his paying attention to this regularly.  If he hadn't, it would have been an uncool result for me.  There are still a few more smilies left, but definitely not to the tune of 14 or 15.  I will keep updating this thread until I am finished, but our stupid little game is essentially over.  I still encourage each of you, though, to continue to seek out the new ones and post them here.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to PhantasyPhilly!  I'll make sure to hook you up with the prize when I swing back through Jersey.

For those who are interested, since the end of the "Great Smiley Contest," four new smiley characters have been added...

[smiley=footballsmiley.gif] "football on my mind"
[smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] "pullleeeeeeeze"
[smiley=graduate.gif] "student of the game"
[smiley=thumbsup.gif] "thumbs up, dude"

Stumbled across another one worthy of adding, upping our "Oriental" smiley population to three, ironically for Steggie here, I suppose.  This little dude definitely serves a purpose for us here.  So, without further ado, let me introduce you to...

[smiley=bow.gif] "bow to greatness"

Our "Far-east Asian" smiley population now looks thusly: [smiley=bow.gif] [smiley=yinandyang.gif] [smiley=zenmaster.gif] [smiley=hooters.gif]
Okay, okay... maybe not the last one! [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif]

Also of note, I changed the smiley formerly known as "tonguin'" from the faggy one I had chosen to...

[smiley=tonguin.gif] to be known as "stick out my tongue"

By the way, I am always open to suggestions regarding/contributions of smilies.  However, at this point, I must say that any additional smilies should fill a specific niche appropriate to our milieu. [smiley=footballsmiley.gif] Also, as evidenced by the selections I have made heretofore, I am not really into too much blood and guts or smilies throwing up or pooping or whatever. [smiley=no.gif]

At any rate, I just hope they help you enjoy "the Gridiron" forum a bit more! [smiley=havinablast.gif]

Yea, I've been lookin' for just the right name for him.  It finally hit me today when I, myself, went to use him.  "Ain't that the truth" seems to capture his "personna" well and ultimately it is just more of a "coined phrase."

Yea, I, too, am psyched about the addition of "Cheers"!  Those guys are cool and should be very useful around these parts.  The only thing that bummed me out was having to separate "Checkin'" and "Chicken":
[smiley=checkin.gif] [smiley=cheers.gif] [smiley=chicken.gif]
Linguistically that was neat having them together!  I know... ::)

On the other hand, it was nice the way "Santa" tucked himself right in behind "Rudolph":

Yea, I unfortunately missed the boat on Halloween (this year). :'( I have had them downloaded for awhile.  Finally, just got to adding them last night.  Anyway, I wanted to cover the three main holidays of our wonderful American holiday season, which coincides with football season.  They'll be nice to have around during those times, I think. :)

OHHHHHH BOY!  I just hit another gold mine of smilies.  Not going to adopt too many, but (starting) tomorrow (my time), I got a handful of fun ones comin' atchya's!  Funny, this is from the site that is the "official" provider of smilies for the YaBB Forum.  I just tonight stumbled across it! ::)

Anyway, this new infusion is going to cause some changes to our smiley personnel! [smiley=ohshit.gif] One will be replaced, but will assume a new name :o ; another will change (from one that I really never liked, though I liked the niche it filled) and be removed altogether [smiley=nervous.gif] ; YET ANOTHER ONE WILL BE CHANGED TO A MUCH BETTER VERSION THEREOF, BUT WILL BE REINCARNATED AS SOME"SMILEY" ELSE THAT ACTUALLY WILL SERVE AS A NICE MEMORIAL BASED ON RECENT EVENTS...  However, this smiley will no longer exist as we know him now.  This one will be a total shocker [smiley=scared.gif] !

You can cut the tension with a knife!!

Well, I gotta' hit the sack... I've got a big day tomorrow!

The next one will be HUGE!

Well, the BIG change is complete...

"Beatnik" is now new and improved and all animated:  [smiley=beatnik.gif]

Our old little friend, who once served as "Beatnik", still wants to hang out with us, though, and being the persistant and resilient little bugger he is, he went and changed hats and will still hang out with us under his new personna, "Jam master":  [smiley=jammaster.gif]
In special memoriam of the late, great "Jam Master J." of Run DMC! [smiley=smileythumbsup.gif]

[smiley=annoyed.gif]
I see this one getting some use as getting annoyed is a common occurrence around here.

[smiley=beatnik.gif]
This guy is MUUUUUCH cooler than the previous beatnik.  And being cool is a mandatory prerequisite of being a beatnik.

[smiley=biker.gif]
Is it just me, or does this little guy look a bit too much like Saddam??

[smiley=arguing.gif]
I coulda used this one right after you posted that Dayne v. Jordan article...

[smiley=jammaster.gif]
Old school... I like it.

[smiley=newbie.gif]
I never really liked the other newbie smiley.  This one is much better.

[smiley=afro.gif]
See comment on Jam Master J smiley.

Any chance we'll see some more football-related smileys from this new stash you've discovered?

FourTwoOh is going to have to address the "football helmet" smiley issue.  As for smilies, in general, there are going to be a few more comin' atchya' here throughout the week, so keep an eye out.  I just gotta' free up some time to get them up.  By the way, thanks for the nice comment on the "Jam master" smiley.  When I found the new "Beatnik," there was no justifying keeping the old one.  That having been said, it crushed me at first.  I am just glad I found a new niche for him and that that work did not go to waste.  I actually like him much more as "Jam master".  It is a neat, timely niche and I think that throwback "Run DMC" style hat looks perty darn cool! [smiley=jammaster.gif] ;D

This is kind of long over with, but I thought I should just apprise you guys of the latest, last two new smilies I added:

[smiley=mickey.gif]
named, oh so appropriately, "goin' to Disneyland", and should fill a great niche here, especially at the end of seasons

[smiley=smurf.gif]
self-evidently named "smurf", a completely fortuitous addition as I just happened to come across him while I was seeking out the "Mickey Mouse ears wearing" smiley, which I knew existed out there somewhere

So, I took care of a couple of the fun and easier tasks, those of adding some smilies and a HELL OF A LOT OF avatars. [smiley=wiseguy.gif] As for the smilies, there are 14 new ones and two that were changed with one of those two still existing on "the Gridiron" as something else [smiley=wiseguy.gif] (so that does mean that one got axed [smiley=spkenny.gif] ).  And, by the way, Mr. Stegartist [smiley=beatnik.gif] here was responsible for one of them himself. ;D [smiley=hmmmm.gif] Hmmmm...  Which one could that be?  Also, all of our message icons are now nice and neatly ordered! ;D Now, as for the avatars, well, guys, you will be able to have at it until your heart's content.  Let's put it this way, we have enough avatars now that if everyone chose one for themselves, everybody would be able to choose their own unique one for quite some time to come, to say the least! yes, yes, yes (but you knew that), yes, yes (but you knew that one too)!  The two I indicate you knew were from the original group.

Of the original 14, you guys still have ONE left!  Of the second set of 5 that I added, there are TWO still left unidentified!

Also, the key questions still remain.  What are the two switcheroos?  Which is the one that survived and still exists on "the Gridiron" as something else?  And, which one is the one that I am responsible for having come up with? ;D

Alright, ugley has the two from the second set.  That is finished. [smiley=cheers.gif]

Philly nailed the one that I am responsible for. [smiley=cheers.gif]

STILL, there is one from the original first set that has not been identified...  as such! [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

And, the two switcheroos and the one that survived (the switcherooing) have STILL not been identified.  I want to clarify once again what this means as I think Philly may have been confused...  Two of the "smiley personnas" were changed to different smiley faces, like what I did with "newbie" and "stick out my tongue" in the past... same label/personna, different graphic.  Some hints:  1) don't look too hard; he stares you right in the face right off the bat and 2) he always disagrees.  Now one of those two "original" smiley faces still exists on "the Gridiron" as a (slightly) different personna/with a different label.  This should be very easy to figure out once you have identified the two switcheroos.  So, the questions are:  "what are the two that were switched?" and "which one of the two that was switched out survived?"

Now, you've got the scent!  Go get 'em, boyz! [smiley=dog.gif] [smiley=dog.gif] [smiley=dog.gif] [smiley=dog.gif] [smiley=dog.gif]

Okay, I will go ahead and introduce this little guy,  [smiley=stpat.gif] "St. Patrick"!  He was brought in the fold with our esteemed Irish members Mr. O'Dell and the team owners of the Irish Fantasy League of American Football (IFLAF) in mind.  I have actually had this smiley in my collection for quite awhile, but thought that this time of year would be such a "downtime" for us, that he would be a frivilous addition.  You guys have proven me wrong. [smiley=stpat.gif] Thanks!

Also of note, in case you missed it, I added two avatars to the database.  One is a USFL graphic, labeled "USFL"; the other is titled "The_Catch" and has been displayed as an avatar in the past by our member Philly.

The Catch is actually a painting by Leroy Neiman... one of the most celebrated sports artists of our time.  The small size of the avatar does not truly do it justice.  If you're an afficionado of the fine arts, and have a few minutes to spare, check out some of his work.  Interesting technique...

Philly, I got a proposal... and a chance to let manifest that philosophy of "opportunity on 'the Gridiron'".  If there is a group of football paintings by Neiman that you can download and would be worthy of being used as avatars like "The Catch", I would be willing to add them to our avatar database as a group, rather than just this random one we have.  I am still not at a point where I could take on such a project nor would I be as inspired to take this on as you might be.  Ultimately, though, it would not be that big of a project.  It would just require you to do the first three steps.  First, you would need to collect them; then you would have to name them EXACTLY according to the following pattern:  Art_Neiman_The_Catch.  Lastly, the collection would need to be "zipped" up, i.e. put into a ".zip" file, and sent to me.  Then I will do the fourth step of uploading them to the server.  What do you think?  Can you download more of his football-related works like you did "The Catch"?  Anyway, I'm game if you are.  Helping a site develop (its personality), moreover to this magnitude... not too many places you have that opportunity. [smiley=patriot.gif]

Not a problem, Steg... though it may have to wait a couple weeks.  I'm swamped at work now, have a baby shower tomorrow (yes, mine and my wife's), vacation next week (Las Vegas for the opening weekend of NCAAs!), and then I can get to it when I come back.

I'm not sure how many other football paintings he's done, but I'll check.  Do you want .jpgs, .gifs, or something else?  What size do you need (100 x 100 max)?

First, congratulations and good luck w/ the [smiley=newbie.gif] ! [smiley=wave.gif]

A distant second, thanks for coming through.  I really like the idea [smiley=awwgee.gif] .  Anyway, JPEG's, GIF's, doesn't matter!  "The Catch" is actually a JPEG though GIF's are the usual for this kind of thing.  100 X 100 max should be the rule, but as "official" avatars of the site, they will be displayed at whatever size they are.

Great job, Phil Lee! ;) Thanks for comin' through on this! [smiley=bow.gif]

Now, I've got a real good one for ya'!  There has been a change to our Smiley base... an addition "of sorts" to the "Smilies", a new "identity" AND a new smiley, BUT no additional or changed "Message Icons" with the one in question represented the same way as it has always been; however, that one now has a new "identity" as a smiley!  So, what are the two smilies in question; what are their identities, and what is the twist as far as the message icon goes?

Well, guys, I got a question for ya's...  I was inspired by the Raiders uniform issues to "create" a smiley tonight.  He is VERY cool, BUT I am debating whether or not I should actually add him or not.  He is quite risque, and a bit attractive actually if I must say so myself [smiley=awwgee.gif] ...  I mean to the point that you might not want your wife/girlfriend to check him out; on the other hand, you could probably use him to get your wife/your girl horny... [smiley=evil.gif] ... and if you're gay, forget it... he is going to "rock" your world! [smiley=rollinwithlaughter.gif] In any event, his identity would be "what a dickhead"!  Now, I know that there is a "blowjob" smiley out there that I really like and I have used it for trash-talkin' on the GBRFL board by way of inserting it as an image from another site where it exists, but I have refrained from "officially" adding it to "the Gridiron" collection because I feel that it crosses the line of acceptibility.  Well, "what a dickhead" pushes the envelope.  I don't think he crosses the line, but it is close and I would like to know your guys' tentative take before even unveiling him.  Just use your imagination and picture how "what a dickhead" might manifest as a smiley. :) Just know he's "full-featured" like everything here at this site!  So, what are your preliminary thoughts?

Well, I will take that as a "yes!" [smiley=shrug.gif] And, it is a Friday night... would be a good night to get the lava lamp out and DP a honey with "what a dickhead" (that's the new name I would go with)...

Ya' see... this is a toughie.  I would say that the appropriateness of "what a dickhead" is somewhere between the aforementioned blowjob smiley, which some of you may have seen and which is not in our collection here, and our "gettin' serviced" smiley.  It is (more) "graphic," however!  Ultimately, though, this is the one and only smiley that has ever made me actually break out in laughter.  I have chuckled before at some of these little dudes, but I actually laughed my "head" off when "this thing popped out" (of my Paint program).

Well, I guess we'll have to wait and see what I'll do here... hmmmm...

KJ 76, you did read through all the posts pertaining to the introduction of our BOY there "what a dickhead", did you not?  Anyway, just to clear up your apparent query, that smiley there came straight from the loins of yours truly, the Rock! [smiley=smileytrash.gif] So, if you see him "pop up" on some other site, let me and that site's admin know.  The same goes for "jam master", "scream" and "seein it all in 3-D"!  There are others that I have had a hand in creating to one degree or another, at least with regards to how they specifically are on "the Gridiron", [smiley=beaver.gif] [smiley=footballsmiley.gif] [smiley=buc.gif] [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] [smiley=stpat.gif] [smiley=swollenhead.gif] [smiley=thinking.gif] , but I cannot call them totally mine.  The "concept" may be all mine in some cases, but they ultimately are modifications of free downloads.  I mean you can totally see "aww... gee... [smiley=awwgee.gif] " in "pullleeeeeeeze [smiley=pullleeeeeeeze.gif] "!  But, the four I initially mentioned above are either basically completely (something, unrecognizable now, might have been used as a template... some sites even have blank template smilies for you to create your own with) or absolutely completely "Stegoriginals":
[smiley=dick.bmp] [smiley=jammaster.gif] [smiley=scream.gif] [smiley=threed.gif] , with "what a dickhead" and "jam master" being absolutely mine.

I gotta' couple REAL GOODIES comin' atchya's later today/tonight.  So, be on the lookout!  Both are definitely VERY purposeful, with regards to the specific theme of "the Gridiron".  One is just a download; the other is a Steggie-overhaul special.  They will both immediately be used "for the respective primary purposes I insinuate above," so they should not be hard to locate once I upload them. This is an updated one... [smiley=bear.gif]

This one is messed up now - called "my whippin' boy" in the list... [smiley=proudAmerican.gif] ? ? ?

Why is this one called "ragin' "? [smiley=ragin.gif]
-----

So I found one that was updated...

Also, Steg, I still wonder why you add the new ones when I'm away on business??  I can't check this thread because it takes forever to open because of all the smilies in it...

Anyway, congrats to Walker Boh on finding all the new ones...  There are some really good ones there Steg.  Now if you could just find a decent Eagle smiley (like the great Seahawk one you found...)

KJ, Not a big fan of most of them, but the "I dunno" smilie is classic. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] I think it would be a great addition to our collection. It's similar to our "shrug"[smiley=shrug.gif], but IMO it's more expressive and you know exactly what it means just by looking at it.

Walker, I agree with you almost completely.  I do, however, like our original "shrug".  Even though it is not animated, it is more detailed and when you look at it closely, I think it is awesome.  BUT, I'm gonna' meet you guys halfway here.  Wait a couple minutes and check things and tell me whatchya's think.  Keep in mind that the higher these things are in the alphabet the more of a pain in the ass they are to add anymore given the size of our smiley database.  This is the one area where these message-board programs are NOT built very efficiently.  That is one big reason why most forum admins don't have many smilies, I would guess.  They do not want to go through the trouble.  Anyway, I'm gonna' give it my best shot.  Tell me whatchya's think!  Should be done in about 15 minutes from this post... (talk about immediate service! ;D )

PA, I will keep your enjoyment of "The Great Smiley Project", which I much appreciate, in the back of my head.  I have quite a bit on the plate between now and Thursday, June 5th, though, and since the site will be making its big move on or around June 14th, I should at this point finally put a moratorium on any kind of additions until that move is over.  No reason to make an already quite heavy site any heavier before the move, which is going to be hellish.  But, thanks for supporting the project, PA!  If you happen to come across anything on your own, let me know.

DW, as was explained quite thoroughly on the "Slight Technical Difficulties on 'the Gridiron'" thread and perhaps also on the "Offseason on 'the Gridiron'" thread, both on page 1 of "the Sidelines", ALL of FantasyFootballer.com will be changing servers to a more heavy-duty one on June 14th-ish when my current account expires.  This, to say the least, will be a HUGE job.  EVERY SINGLE PAGE needs to be downloaded (a process I have already begun); then re-uploaded, and then checked over to make sure it is all working right!  MASSIVE JOB!  Nevertheless, I am going to TRY to do it so it is seamless to you all.  It is not gonna' be easy, but... I'll give it a whack. [smiley=bow.gif]

Trying refreshing the page.  To refresh the BIG smiley box, right click on it and go to "Refresh" or "Reload" or whatever your system says.  Basically, you must be on your LAN line at work and are not seeing the updated page like when I changed the folders to bulbs on the index page back when.

Anyway, [smiley=pirate.gif] is now "pirate" and  [smiley=buc.gif] is now "swashbucker", but, regardless, I would like [smiley=buc.gif] to remain our message icon and symbol for the Buccaneers.  As such, the GIF for "swashbuckler" is actually "buc.gif".  Why is he then not "buccaneer", you ask?  Because, as those of you old-timers here know, I don't want to have to shimmy it all the way up to "bu" on the list.  That's what I'd have to do if I want the page to continue to be maintained in the cool manner that I have thus far.  As such, "swashbuckler" combined with "buc.gif" is JUST FINE! [smiley=yes.gif] Along these lines, if you noticed, the "highest" letter I used for the new additions last night was "p", "pu" to be exact, [smiley=pumped.gif] "pumped".  For any additions anymore, though I think this project is probably drawing to a close, I will try to make an "as-appropriate-as-possible" name for the smiley, but always with a letter as low in the alphabet as I can get.

...

OH, AND, THE WINNER HERE...

That's one of them, Phil!  Actually, there is an interesting story about that one.  When I originally added it, I ended up naming him "returning fire" (hint, hint), a name I really like, but not for him as he is shooting with "obvious" precision, not just firing away as though firing back (hint, hint).  I thought the name "sniper" was MUCH MORE appropriate, but at that time, the sniper attacks down in the D.C. area were taking place and I thought that would be a very insensitive choice, especially since I knew of at least one member here who lived right in that vicinity.  For some reason, the name "marksman" dawned on me this morning. [smiley=shrug.gif] So, "marksman" he became and the name "returning fire"... well, is better than "firin' away" (R.I.P. and hint, hint).

Could it be this one?

Last season when the sniper was on the loose, one of the guys in my FF league made a comment in our forums about how he was lucky to have grabbed the sniper as a sleeper pick in the 10th round of his fantasy terrorism league.  It caused a bit of a stir in our league as one of the owners lives just outside DC and took some serious offense to that remark.  I think the guy was being a little over-sensitive, but then again, I wasn't in the area affected.

[offtopic]Very perceptive, Philly!  I wasn't going to call for a search on this one as its capabilities are greater than that of your average smiley as you can see.  This one's actually a "tweener", functioning as a smiley being used in UBBC (you can see that the code for this "smiley" is VERY different from the rest; it is NOT just a simple "smiley" call; it is UBBC) for indicating/calling out an "off-topic" post.  I see its being used A LOT by our "Gridiron Officials".  In any case, it is another one of those additions/upgrades I am busting hump on.[/offtopic]

I love the "multi functional smiley!!!!  I now will be able to bring special attention to when I totally go off topic.

[offtopic] Isn't it supposed to be "off the beaten track"?  As in...taking a path that is not beaten down when hiking?  As in taking the path less taken?  Going off the norm?  I am not sure, as I am just a history major.   [/offtopic]

WOW!  Finally found a source on this.  I have considered them both like you.  I read it as "beat" as in regular route, like a policeman's beat, thus, "beat and track".  HOWEVER, the source I found confirms that it is, in fact, "beaten track" as you state.  Thanks for bringing that up, DD. [smiley=bow.gif] Will be fixed in a jiffy! [smiley=onit.gif] However, I will probably change it to something totally different as "Off the beaten track" really doesn't capture the purpose of this. Yea, that's one of the few (back-end) downfalls of the YaBB system if you want to have a ton of smilies and want to organize/present them in the neatest way possible. [smiley=shrug.gif] I'm not going to be adding anything in the "a's" unless YaBB solves this (which I don't think they will be moved to as most people don't want these many smilies and are satisfied with the method they developed for adding smilies quickly (which is not good enough for my picky, attention-to-detail perfectionist nature)).

I was just today introduced to a new wellspring of smilies by our esteemed Jeff West.  Like a kid in a candy shop, I went [smiley=pig.gif] wild.  I couldn't help myself...  So, though I thought this was a project surely winding down, it is going to wind back up here in a bit for a bit!  I have not added any new ones yet.  They'll be a really good handful (of some really clever and useful ones) when I do.

For those keen observers, I have already made one change.  Hmmmm... [smiley=hmmmm.gif]

Title: Re: The Great Smiley Project & Avatar Madness!

Something I was UNABLE to do when I was in Korea back in '02 (the last time I tried this), when I was adding these things like a madman, probably because I was on a cable modem (and there was that update issue we've discussed in the past, where you don't realize the site updates immediately), I just finally tried again as the group I was adding was pretty big.  This time it WORKED!  It reduced what would have amounted to a 25+-hour job to about a 5+-hour job, which I just finished!  WHEW!  MOREOVER, it allowed me to reorganize some of the smilies I was forcing into the back end of the list out of sheer necessity (as I have explained before).  E.g., now "clown" [smiley=clown.gif] is "clown", not "you're an f'n clown", which I had made it because I wanted it to start with the letter "y" to keep it at the end of the list.  SO, besides ALL the NEW smilies (and other emoticons) I added, there is also a bit more sense to the way they are ordered.  I hope you enjoy them,... the undisputed, I think, single greatest collection of smilies boasted by any message-board forum on the net!

Also, there are a couple that got a make-over...  One is an oldie that has underwent a second make-over.  The second one is one that never received a greeting ceremony here on this thread.  In any event, it has been greatly improved from when it was quietly brought aboard a few weeks ago.

There is actually one other one that was never greeted here.  By special request, it was added about midway through the '04 season.

I count 59 of the new ones from KKS and Philly's posts.  You are missing one, and I know which one it is.

The following ones are NOT new:  [smiley=bear.gif] [smiley=newbie.gif] [smiley=donut.gif]

Philly got the oldie that got the make-over!

But, he did not get the new one that came in without fanfare and got a make-over...  [smiley=injury.gif] is NOT correct.

Also, the one that came in "unceremoniously" during last season was not gotten.

So, THERE ARE THREE LEFT FOR YOUS TO FIND!!!  One final new one, the kind of new one that got the make-over, and another one that came in unacknowledged last season.  Good [smiley=shamrock.gif] luck!!!

And, yes, KKS, we get to keep 'em ALL!!! ;D

Ya know, fellas, for those of you who really like our smiley collection, smilies could be used as externally-linked-to avatars.  A few smilies that I think would make cool avatars come quickly to mind:

[smiley=bouncin.gif] [smiley=leagueking.gif] [smiley=hellhound.gif] [smiley=bouncinaround.gif] [smiley=band.gif] [smiley=Freddie.gif] and others...

I wouldn't bother uploading them as avatars because I honestly think that our already vast database of regular avatars is WAY under-utilized, which is somewhat disappointing to me,... but, whatever,... [smiley=shrug.gif] it's there for the future.

In any event, using smilies as avatars is another way of keeping avatar displays in-house.  All you'd have to do to do this is 1) right-click the smiley, 2) choose "Properties", 3) get the URL for the smiley graphic and 4) apply it in your "Profile" as an externally-linked-to avatar.  Very simple.  Anyway, just throwin' another option out there that puts to use site-provided resources that I think you guys enjoy.

I went out to get something in particular and,... well,... one thing led to another... and HOURS later... [smiley=blush.gif] ... we've got a bunch of new toys... [smiley=awwgee.gif]

A few comments/hints for those interested in picking these out...  Many of these could just as well be used as avatars, actually, and many others are icon-like.  I actually see the best usage of many of them being as message icons... for the purposes of infusing (even) more personality into the forum.  Second, and this is probably the BEST aspect of this smiley load, a few of the NFL teams for which we used eh smilies/message icons (like up in "the Red Zone" as message icons for team threads) heretofore now have MUCH better, more appropriate ones.  Thirdly, one of the smilies has changed.  Last, over and above the mere additional smilies, there is an extra addition to the message icons due to a switcheroo.  The new switched-in smiley is only used for the message icon, i.e., the one that was used for the in-line smiley with the same name remains the same.  Also, the one that was switched in for is now a message icon of a different name (that's the extra one)... Ya know, fellas, for those of you who really like our smiley collection, smilies could be used as externally-linked-to avatars.  A few smilies that I think would make cool avatars come quickly to mind:

Origin
The term "avatar" derives from the Sanskrit word Avatara which means "descent" and usually implies a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hinduism, for incarnations of Vishnu the Preserver, whom many Hindus worship as God. The Dasavatara are ten particular "great" incarnations of Vishnu. The "Golden Avatar" popularly known as Gouranga is said to be the most recent descent.

As used for a computer representation of a user, the term dates at least as far back as 1985, when it was used as the name for the player character in the Ultima series of computer games. The Ultima games started out in 1981, but it was in Ultima IV (1985), that the term "avatar" was introduced. To become the "avatar" was the goal of Ultima IV. The later games assumed that you were the avatar and "avatar" was the player's visual on-screen in-game persona. The on-screen representation could be customized in appearance.

Later, the term "avatar" was used by the designers of the role-playing game Shadowrun (1989), the online role-playing game Habitat (1987) and was popularised by Neal Stephenson in his cyberpunk novel Snow Crash (1992), where it was used to describe the virtual simulation of the human form in the Metaverse, a virtual-reality version of the Internet. Social status within the Metaverse was often based on the quality of a user's avatar, as a highly detailed avatar showed that the user was a skilled hacker and programmer while the less talented would buy off-the-shelf models in the same manner a forumer would today. Stephenson has said that he invented this use of the word without knowing somebody else had done it first

Well,... regarding the last two posts, especially the one two above, that was educational as hell (thanks for sharing that with us, sk), but, while I see how it is related to the thread, for sure, and, as I just said, valuable, and it's witty to boot, nobody has yet to take a stab at fulfilling my request.  I know it's VERY late in the ballgame to be messing around with this...  But, these new additions are pretty easy...  No one can even humor me here,... on point that is... ;) I mean this graduating [smiley=graduate.gif] class of smilies is getting a bit cranky as they're thinking they aren't going to get a commencement ceremony.  Moreover, they're a bit bent that it is getting preempted by this Vishnu guy and his avatars... The Pirate is much closer to a Raider!

After all, The Autumn Wind is a Pirate....[smiley=pirate.gif]

Link:
The Autumn Wind (http://www.raiderfans.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20040522092254176)
The "Autumn Wind" was written by NFL Film's Steve Sabol. Sam Spence wrote the music to Autumn Wind (the Raiders Theme music) and the late NFL Films announcer John Facenda is the voice you hear reading "Autumn Wind."

The Autumn Wind is a pirate
Blustering in from sea
With a rollicking song he sweeps along
swaggering boisterously....

Scroll down for a link to the audio.
("Raiders - The Autumn Wind
Raiders Theme")

I like that.  Thanks for all your work, StegRock!

I don't disagree with you, Callie.  In fact, there are (at least) three smilies that I think could all be used to signify the Raiders here on "the Gridiron":   [smiley=warrior.gif], [smiley=pirate.gif], and [smiley=skull.gif], and in messages they are (I know I've used them all for the Raiders).  But, after much thought, mind you, I have my reasons for wanting to stick with [smiley=warrior.gif] as the "official" message icon for threads, reasons not the least of which is to keep it distinct from the Buccaneers (for those, like myself, who look for team threads up in "the Red Zone" by icon just as much if not more frequently than by subject).  That having been said, for "unofficial" threads use whatever you want... with an appreciation of the pattern I'm trying to establish/maintain in mind (i.e., if the "unofficial" thread you are starting on some Raider topic is more fantasy-oriented or just more of a loose topic, use whatever you want, but if the thread is more "official-ish", then I'd probably go with [smiley=warrior.gif])...

Anyway, still no one willing to take a shot at marching these new smilies through commencement??? [smiley=graduate.gif] ... :-/

[smiley=twothumbsup.gif] As I had originally stated, there is one more, but it's not used as a "smiley", per se, here on "the Gridiron".  It's a new message icon, the addition of which also included a switch.  I'll give it to yous...  The message icon (i.e., not the smiley, it's still the same) "On the soap box" is now http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/YaBBImages/soapboxnew.gif and the one that used to be used for it, [smiley=singin.gif] (which is the smiley for "singin'"), is now the message icon "Gimme a mic..."

And, there yous have it!!!  Again, KKS, thanks for taking this on and doing a great job!!!  Phil, you sured it up and made it a 100% effort!!!

Inspired by our esteemed member steelking's sweeeet usage of [smiley=spock.jpg] on this thread page, http://www.fantasyfootballer.com/cgi-bin/theGridiron/YaBB.cgi?board=58;action=display;num=1043425383;start=50, smiley or not I knew it had to be added to our smiley database.  On THIS Steggie site in particular,... it's says SO MUCH!!!  A picture that speaks way more than a thousand words, especially here!!!  I see it getting a TON of use!!!  Furthermore, given the great mood that put me in, I got some more toys for yous.  I won't even make yous figure 'em out...  I will do the honors right here right now...  Drum roll, please... [smiley=drummer.gif] Besides "Spock" above, here's the rest of the class:
[smiley=dramaqueen.gif] [smiley=egghead.gif] [smiley=fishing.gif] [smiley=loser.gif] [smiley=oldschool.gif] [smiley=cheese.gif] [smiley=toast.gif] [smiley=bubble.gif] [smiley=zebra.gif] [smiley=zipit.gif]

Besides "Spock saying, 'Fascinating,'" I really love "toast".  That could get a TON of play on "the Gridiron", as well.  I would actually say the same thing for "drama queen" (eh-hem [smiley=awwgee.gif]), "fishing" (for deals), "that's cheese", and "zip it!", for sure, and the rest...

ENJOY them all, in any event, boyz and girlz!

[smiley=spock.jpg]

P.S. (Once again, site/forum administration with that signature personal touch.  Won't find it anywhere else...  You can make a difference on "the Gridiron".  Just do it!!!)

[smiley=spock.jpg] ... [smiley=LMFAO.gif]

P.S.S. (I haven't gotten this much laughter out of something (on the site at least) in a loooong time.)

I am actually using "You are square" as my message icon to indicate that "I am square"...  With a little "spare time" this evening, I blew it on adding a few smiley pics.  In fact, I stumbled on one tonight that prompted me to add it and a couple I've been waiting to add for some time (like maybe a couple years).  All of them will probably be more useful as message icons than in-text smilies.  In any case, without further ado, here they are...  [smiley=pencil.gif], [smiley=dice.gif] and [smiley=world.gif] ...
